I'm not trying to be argumentative or anything, so please don't take this the wrong way, however, you are simply incorrect. Whatever MS may or may not have intended for WMP is quite irrelevant. Bluray employs a container format based on the mpeg transport stream, namely .m2ts. With the current codecs I have installed, windows media player is able to decode the BDMV STREAM (.m2ts) and play back Bluray content without trouble.

Note: At the moment I don't have any physical BD media on me, but am playing content copied directly from BD to HDD (with the file architecture intact (i.e. BDMV, CERTIFICATE, SLY! etc.).

There is a huge difference between playing a Blu-ray movie disk and playing ripped/converted HD video originating from a Blu-ray disk and stored on other media. Plus, Blu-ray is not just about the raw video, but there are many nice interactive features that are unique to the format (BD-Live/Java) and you cannot have them this way! Blu-ray is so protective that it won't even let you make screenshots from discs being played (unlike DVDs) and if you change the sound or display devices during playback the whole thing stops and crashes...

and it's a 2.5" drive, despite it being in a specialized 3.5" heatsink case

on sale now at newegg. 600gb model
    http://www.newegg.com/product/produ...-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10440897&PID=1909457&SID=

i wonder if it would be supported in a 2.5" enclosure and what the benchmarks would be. also wonder if it would be faster than a 120gb vertex ssd??

But illegal. Full how-to here: http://www.brighthub.com/electronics/home-theater/articles/57316.aspx
Not straightforward or native by default in Windows. Even more problematic in Windows 7. In fact, Blu-ray won't even play if your NVIDIA driver is not signed and installed as WHQL (to ensure no modded drivers with possibility of injected code are used).

Sweet. I was considering getting a 250GB SSD, but this looks pretty nice, especially at around $300.. Hmm. 2.0 described the SSDs as being 100% faster than 7200 drives? This is only 15%? Still though..

illegal, really? you assume alot don't you. do you know all countries laws? do you know then local laws.

screw that even. did i mention anything about blu-ray discs that i do not own right to, or that someone does not own rights to?

i assume that YOU ASSume that i refer to "hollywood" discs, but let me inform you of this little piece of information....people can actually burn their own content on blu rays...i bet you did not know that

next time don't get confrontational (right now i am defensive, not confrontational, btw) and stop ASSuming things.

oh and your wrong on those other points you tried to make as well. you really do ASSume a lot don't you.

hey weren't you the one that started stuff with the that good ol navy guy that had enough of some idiocy on here and stop posting pretty much? ya.

ps come to think of it, you are the one that started posting direct links and stuff like that, and tried to defend it. then argued with me. if i am correct, you did the same thing like a year or so ago with the ol navy guy too. hmmm...pattern. i dont care. see ya.

Thanks. When you burn to BD-R and BD-RE media that's different (and different data formats). Disney, Sony and many other producers have this restriction regarding copyright infringement if you distribute screen grabs of their films without their permission (not that people are not doing so all the time, ignoring the warning), unless you are just doing the screenshots for your own private pleasure and consumption, i.e., not publicly distributing them to others over the Web, on Flickr, etc., for example. Producers however usually keep a blind eye on such minor postings by fans on social sites (unless maybe if you post a whole movie in high quality), as it would require them an army of dedicated 24/7 personnel to monitor the Web (besides the fact that in some way, such postings can be seen as positively contributing to a title's publicity at no cost to the producer).

And no, I never had arguments with Hovercarftdriver (navy guy, as you call him). In fact, I have one rep point from him.

    Be safe and well.

SSD's aren't merely 100% faster. They are several times faster in transfer speed and several hundred times faster in seek speed than notebook HDDs.

I haven't sidestepped any issue--please slowly re-read my reply above. I think there is a minimal forum etiquette that should be observed concerning what we can and cannot write in our posts (assumptions). You previously hurt somebody else on these pages, but this is now history. Your attitude was even interpreted by that person as a kind of racism and I remember moderators stepping in and cautioning posters.

Posts should be about objects (HDX) not persons! It's what we say that counts or is able to hurt us rather than what others say about us.

If you want to declare yourself a winner, you are more than welcome. I have much better ambitions than "winning" some discussion here.

Well, yes, there are forum rules. One of which is to never discuss illegal activities. Since this forum is based in the United States, the laws the forum is most concerned about are US laws.

So discussing torrents, copyright infringements, cracks, hacks, rips, etc. is against forum rules.

And so there's no ambiguity, discussing products made by Slysoft is a no-no.

Wow...I'm not around for half a day and look at all I've missed...

First, to clear up a misunderstanding/assumption from one of your earlier posts, as I very clearly stated in my note for this very reason, the files were neither ripped nor converted from a BluRay to a different format--they are a mirror image (backup) of the original disc with the full menu structure and content intact.

Second, in regard to your previous assumptions/comments: We are not having a discussion of what is legally or morally correct, but of what is technically possible to accomplish. This renders many of your previous comments moot, including those regarding screen shots and WMP BD playback.

    +1

you said it very well. nice words to round off that non issue. i never espoused nor talked about such illegal things as kindheart is suggesting either...that was my whole point about making assumptions. his points did not apply at all to anything...nothing at all. i guess we know where his mind was at. point to me kindheart where at all i even implied about making illegal screencaps?? you cannot. making screencaps of blueray discs IS NOT inherently illegal, in the USA or anywhere, PERIOD. when you inject your context, then yes in your projected scenarios perhaps. but those are moot. and you committ many many logical fallacies to boot.

    jolly good show...jolly good.

slysoft products? i was referring to firefox LOL they have a lot of good add-ons :)
either way there was no discussions of such illegal things here. i know you want to just get that for the record for whomever else.

You are referring to a non-protected disk (cannot be from Disney, Sony, WB and other major producers, which are even sometimes locked to particular regions A, B or C). Blu-ray disks can be mastered as plain UDF without protection and created to behave as ordinary (video) DVDs but with extra storage. Or in simpler words, not every Blu-ray is a Blu-ray :D Also what you are doing (copying disk content) still falls under the term ripping.

    again...false.

i will post quickly here and allow anyone else to elaborate further. i know you are tempted to inject your own scenarios into an argument, but it applies to PROTECTED discs as well. there are a host of protection schemes available to be implemented on discs (cd, dvd, hd-dvd, bd, etc.) and many reasons that "average joe" has and does. independant film artist, musicians, photographers, etc. i know personally people that have protected their discs. so no, when you make your illegal talk arguments, you need to get even more specific than protected and not protected. again...you inject false things that eventually stir up arguments that are not necessary and related mess. keep your day job and stop calling, by way of implication, someone's activities...illegal, since your points have proven false and moot.

of course! your emoticon made me laugh.

besides, slysoft products in themselves, discussion or otherwise are not illegal, just to be clear. like knives, guns, cars, they can be used for good or evil. it's what you do with them. so ya talk of slysoft products is ok, just not illegal activities with them., and yes, their products DO serve purposes for "Good". i can give examples, but i am sure a lot of you are smart enough. i have used their products for good. some of their burning software is quicker than others i have used, simple interface, etc.

After i updated all the drivers i noticed that my maximum screen resolution is 1680x1050 but that's not what i got originally. can someone help me go back to my original resolution?

ok do you have the nvidia card? if you, what driver version do you have? how did you update them? did you check device manager to see what version you have?

the following are the latest WHQL official drivers from nvidia site:

    windows 7 64-bit
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_x64_197.16_whql.html

    windows 7 32-bit
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_197.16_whql.html

some others here still prefer the 186.xx drivers for various reasons.

if you have an ati card, then it's a different scenario.

    need more info please.

Before the 197.16 drivers, there were issues with GPU clocks not downclocking properly, higher temps at idle, and brightness issues.

For info, the only Quick Launch version that will fix this and restore the blue TV button function is 6.20 F2 ( SP35581), the version that shipped with many of the later Vista Dragons. Windows 7 might tell you on startup, the first time after you install it, that it is not compatible, just choose 'ignore/don't show this message again'.

To install QLB 6.20 F2, first uninstall any newer versions you might have.

They have been working fine on many platform as compared to its predecessors. They certainly peform better than the 186.81 or 186.91.

The other thing is, if you are trying to do 3D, then you have to stay with the 186.81 as that is the last driver to provide support for it.

There is that. Yes. But then there's always a change of habits and configuration as an option which would accommodate the radical increase in speed that an SSD brings.

Sort of like using at most 10 simultaneous tabs in Firefox and getting along famously with 2GB-4GB instead of using 100+ tabs and needing 8GB yet getting crashes anyway.

    I'm just sayin'. :D

On reading your post, I decided to check my graphics card driver just for the sake of it. Upon doing so, I determined that I am currently using 195.62. I originally installed this driver when I upgraded to Windows 7 in January per the instructions for a x64 install posted somewhere earlier on this forum. I too noticed the brightness issue, but didn't mind, however, I was unaware of higher temps issue until now. Can you please let me know what the average temperatures should be? I generally don't upgrade graphics card drivers unless there is a specific issue I'm trying to resolve, as I do no intensive gaming, and it's my policy not to fix something unless it's broken. If it turns out my temps are way off, and that I should upgrade drivers, what number would you recommend? I've seen numerous nVidia drivers for our card around here lately, but am unsure of the differences between them, and which is best--I have no need for stereoscopic 3D, or anything like that. Just something reliable with versatile performance.

    Thanks,
    Brent

Figure, with an ambient environment temp around 22-24 DegC (70-72DegF), your idle GPU temp should be in the low 40's DegC. That is provided that you are not using dualview (two monitors active - HDX screen and an external via HDMI or VGA).

I've been using the official Nvidia 197.16 WHQL. The best yet. Coupled with Adobe's Flash 10.1 RC, it's how the HDX should have been from the get go.

Before that, I've tried nearly every driver after 186.81 from Nvidia. Was using Dox's 185.85 modified for a while as it was better than the 186.81. But then Kindheart posted the link to Microsoft's 186.91 driver and it was hard to beat. That is until the 197.16.

BTW, link to the Flash 10.1RC: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

I just checked the temperature from about the last day or so--in a 65-70 C room, the GPU has ranged from 50-63 C, and is currently idling at 54. In that time, the most intensive thing I've done has been some HD video playback. I am currently using the HDMI output, however, it is the only current active monitor since I have it 'docked' most of the time, and only use the external display. Are these temps okay, or would you recommend upgrading regardless?

    Thanks~

I haven't run HDMI as the only active display. But when I run it as dualview via HDMI simultaneously with the HDX's screen, I get mid 50's DegC. Perhaps it is that whenever an external display is connected, the 8800M uses higher clocks. In which case would mean the temps are normal.

I'll try it tomorrow as I'm not near an HDX currently. Posting from a DV5.

But I'd recommend without reservation the new drivers. Just make sure that when you uninstall your current driver, that the system reboots with the default Microsoft VGA driver installed. Then update to the current. This will ensure an issue-free install.

If you installed drivers over drivers in the past, you may have to uninstall the driver it installs upon reboot until a subsequent reboot installs the Microsoft VGA driver.

Alright, thanks a lot. I'll upgrade the drivers later tonight, or perhaps sometime tomorrow, then monitor the results and let you know.

    Buona notte~

wow, that is really impressive temps considering the room temp. that's about 149F-158F for the room temp, for all you fahrenheiters.

forget that, that is impressive that you can personally stand to be in a room with those temps! you must be made out of heat shield material. :D ;)

that is one more testament that the dragon would stand up to sauna temperatures. i'll think about taking my dragon into the sauna at the health club next time!

    :D ;)

I run HDMI to an external as my only monitor at home, and I get around 50C idle. I don't have an exact ambient temp, but it's pretty warm here, maybe around 25C.

I'm running 197.16 and the flash beta, don't know if that helps.

Hahahaha, I'll have you know that it gets quite hot here in Turkmenistan =). In fact, just the other day I took the Dragon with me for entertainment while on a long camel ride to Ashgabat...It was absolutely scintillating!

Thanks for the info. I just updated to 197.16 a few moments ago, so I'll monitor the temps for a while and let you know the results.

    Any router experts out there?

Recently got a Netgear WNDR3700 Gigabit Router, coupled to an Intel 5300AGN inside the Dragon, with the aim of streaming HD wirelessly around the house from a 1TB External drive connected directly to the router. This was all working a charm until this morning. Now my wireless transfer rate maxxes out at 1MB/s when it was up around 5MB/s before. I've fiddled and poked with the settings but I still can't get more than 1MB/s which is no good for streaming HD.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

    TIA

    CJ

OK, I have a similar setup here (same router with a 120GB External, same wi-fi card), but I stream the HD from my server (5TB of video so yeah i needed something bigger lol :D ). The external, I assume it's connected through the USB port on the router. Have you disconnected and then reconnected the External? Also, have you recently upgraded to any new firmware? My router's current firmware is V1.0.4.35NA. I upgraded to the newer ones, but then I started having problems. If you have upgraded recently, downgrade back to V1.0.4.35NA (the router will let you downgrade without an issue). Also, There is a "flaw" with using external hard drives with the WNDR3700. To get the speeds you should have, you would need to format the drive as FAT, not NTFS (There may be a legitimate reason for this, but I never found one). Also, try resetting back to factory defaults. But make sure you disconnect the external from the router before making any changes. Not a big thing, but just a precaution. I hope this helps.

I had a look at it using GPU-Z .42. As I suspected, use of external output clocks the GPU to its upper middle range. 383Mhz on core to be specific. Which would account for the higher idle.

Verdict: high 40's, low 50's DegC using external output either as sole output or as duplicate/extended desktop is normal.

Kewl. Just downgraded to the original firmware and I'm getting 7.2MB/s wireless transfer now.
You're a legend. Have some rep.
