Aye, but it is supply/demand.
Compared to the X7900, the X9000's run cooler, have a slightly larger cache and especially with throttlestop allowing some serious overclocking with extreme chips along with the X7900; anyone with a 965 chipset system looking to get near 720qm turbo performance and inject some serious life into their laptop can.
Then toss in the Dragon owners and any other 965 chipset laptop that won't work with SetFSB and your options are even more limited to an X7900 or X9000.
Good times.![]()
What's even scarier is the guy selling the $599 X9000 sold TWO of them just days/weeks ago for $549 and $599 respectively.

Yikes! Did I just pull a 2.0? Can I say that, 2.0?
In contradiction to myself, I think the Dragon is worth the x9000 at almost any price! I'd refit it with titanium as well, but that's another level. -
Hello everyone. Noob here in regards to notebooks.
I'm trying to find out a little bit of information, but don't have the desire to dig through a thousand plus pages. It's basically a question in regards to the processor. I currently have the 20.1 inch HDX w/ a 2.5ghz processor. From what I understand I'm not capable of running a quad core. Basically what is the best CPU I can fit under the hood?
Thanks in advance,
Jason -
X9000. And it can be overclocked using a program by poster uncleweb.
-
I am trying to catch up on all that has happened in the last 10 months with the HDX.
I have an HDX 9010nr. The only upgrades I have made so far is to replace the two 120GB drives with 320GB - 7200RPM drives, going to 4GB of RAM, and upgrading the OS to WIN 7 in November of 2009.
I would like to upgrade anything that I can to bring the Dragon up to date. What modification can I make?
Are there good SSD solutions? Can the CPU be upgraded? Etc., etc.
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Larry -
Since you have the 9010, you can't upgrade the video card because the motherboard won't support it.
If you did want to go with Nvidia, you would have to buy a new mobo and video card. You could probably recoup some of that investment by selling your old mobo and video card on eBAY.
Nvidia compatible mobo: 464591-001
Nvidia video card: 454311-001
You can look these up and order from HP parts store.
Going from ATI to Nvidia would more than double your video performance.
As for SSD, Intel X-25M or OCZ Vertex. Vertex 1 is sufficient. The Indilinx controller is excellent. You can splurge on a Vertex 2 with sandforce controller but it's not necessary.
CPU-wise, you can go T9300, T9500, X7900 or X9000. Both the 7900 and X9000 can be overclocked using software made by uncleweb. The link to it is maybe 20 pages back or so. Good discussion that is worth catching up on.
So that's it. If you were to do all these, you would SUPERcharge your HDX.
Best wishes. -
thnx! back in the states, but popping in and out...not too much time too post.
so is this a no, no matter what serial or whatever (such as slax or what not), or the processor in general? would it even work with that software tweek everyone is talking about, by changing bus so it does? -
The processor is from the Montevina platform. Requires 1066mhz bus. In the HDX, if it could work, it's speed would be about 2.2ghz because of the 800mhz bus. What's more, since it's not supported in BIOS the notebook likely wouldn't post.
But let's say it did work in the HDX. As mentioned, it would run @ 2.2ghz. If you overclocked it, you'd have to go 30% overclock just to reach a little over 2.8GHz. It would run hot and likely not stable at that overclock. -
Thank you 2.0.
-
WOW!
Thanks for the quick reply. I love my Dragon and it has served me well for over two years. I have no idea why they stopped making the 20.1" screen, except for perhaps the weight issue. I have had a lot of friends ask where they can get one. Then they find the Dragons on ebay for more than I paid when I bought it new.
Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll probably do all of the above. You have been a great help.
Larry... -
CompTrekie, I see in your signature you've overclocked a X9000 in the HDX, how did you manage to do that, can you shed some light on the matter, cuz as far as I know there was no working software method to raise the FSB....
Best Regards,
Bobby

Anyone know why the notebook LCD monitor conversion threads were closed?
The best info I've seen so far is from DigitalView.com who actually sells converters for high res LCDs, but at $400+..... -
Which thread? Got URL?

Possibly because this one violates forums rules with the blog post. Link is dead anyway. And the thread is old. I think the system is set to auto-close old threads to prevent resurrection which affects the database.
Same for this, old thread, low interest.
Interesting. Though the expresscard solution (DIY ViDOCK) would probably be the better bet all things HDX considered.

As 2.0 said throttlestop. It is an awesome program! If you look a few pages back I have some detailed info on voltages and multipliers. 4.0GHz is not a long term stable or safe OC, 3.6-3.8GHz is more realistic.

I just found this forum and wanted to ask, does anyone know of anyone that is selling their HDX Dragon. I'd really like to get my hands on one.
-
Yes, but there's already a two year waiting list.
Kidding.
They barely show up on eBay anymore. -
Hi all, im new here.
Since this forum seems to be full of awesome information and i have a little question i thought it wouldnt hurt to register...
My question is the following:
If I install win7 on my HDX9350... what will stop working? And where can i find as much as possible good working drivers for doing this?
I assume it already has been discussed in this thread, but you understand that its kinda difficult to search for this in a 1118 pages long thread.
So if any one could point me out to the page where this is discussed or summarise it, it would be greatly appreciated! -
Everything should work. Anyway, here's the definitive post for win7 on the HDX:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/5665765-post8954.html
As for drivers, if you see a softpack (SPxxxx.exe) that you don't have you can find them here:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/
Any questions, come back and ask.
-
Hey thanks man, thats awesome!
I cant try it out right now, it will be a few weeks before i can try this out but its good to know it can be done!
What i find weird though, is that that post seems to suggest to install the geforce drivers from the nvidia site, but as far as i know this doesnt work and you are forced to use HP's (outdated) drivers? -
Nvidia's drivers work just fine. You can also find driver's on Microsoft's update catalog. You can also play around with drivers on laptopvideo2go's website.

Afternoon gents
Got a HDX9313 with x9000, looking at Throttlestop as am getting into my video rendering and also wouldnt mind a lil boost on CPU intensive games like GTA4.
Anyone with the same spec recommend a good setting for the program?
Also, it resets your settings after you reboot right? presumably there's a 'profile' button of sorts to just quickly hit and wack it back on when you want? I also assume it's better to only turn it on when you need to do such things (games, rendering etc)
Obviously dont wanna bugger my Dragon.
Oh, last I was looking in here someone was claiming they'd managed to get a gtx graphics card in there successfully, did 2.0 ever debunk it since he couldnt do it?
Always end up losing track of this thread
-
No one has ever provided definitive proof of it working. The last attempt was by a poster from Poland. But not enough information was forwarded to gain any real insight into things like temps, stability, etc. For sure no matter what, the job will require physical modification.
So it's a dead issue. -

FYI - HP HDX 20.1" X9000 8800M Bluray 320GB Intel 6300 More! - eBay (item 180535125777 end time Jul-28-10 22:28:53 PDT)That's my unit with the X9000 for sale.
Well, kind of for sale. It depends on if the M6500 I have listed sells (basically whichever one sells first), as I'm kind of loathe to part with the HDX but by Friday I'll have three notebooks in house (HDX 9000, Dell M6500, Dell Studio 1749), and at least one of them has to go. If the M6500 sells and/or the Studio 1749 doesn't pan out (21 day return policy), I'll keep the HDX.
If the HDX sells, I'll probably end up keeping the M6500 depending on how the Studio 1749 stacks up against it. Like my previous M6400, the one knock of the Precision M6500 are those pesky sharp emo corners of death when typing. Anti-glare RGBLED is much nicer than the E2E on the M6400 though. -
Tried out Throttlestop
scared the crap outta myself there for a sec, pushed it too far and was gettin BSOD every time I tried to boot into normal windows mode. Only way to fix it was restore bios defaults
had it at x20 with a voltage of 1.35, which made it 3.9ghz
I've left the voltage the same but turned it down to x18, at 3.6 now
-
Ok, then maybe you can help me out. Was gonna ask this on eBay. How did you get an Intel 6300 wifi card to work in the HDX?? It's a half-height card. I thought about getting one but it's too short for the HDX, at least from the pictures I saw it was.
-
I've got one too. Works great, second slot, tight fit and antennas hold it in place. Of course, I rarely move my machine anymore, maybe from room to room occasionally.

-
I was thinking you had to have had a connection to the HDX forum from some things you said, looks like a great sell/buy man. Sounds like you have a few toys and a few choices to make between them soon enough.
-
I have the 5300 installed, was just interested in how you got that 6300 in there. Thanks
-
Yah I had the same issue a few times when I was testing it out and pushing the limits. I believe what happens is that the CPU registers keep the values stored that Throttlestop edits when the computer BSODs. The way I would fix it is: remove power cord, remove battery, and hold power button for 15-20 secs. That would clear it every time.
In my testing 3.6GHz @1.35VID is stable and safe. I run this setting 90% of the time. I also have a battery and Internet profile setup both set at 1.6GHz @ 1.00VID. The battery one switches automatically if I go on battery and I use the internet one if I know I will not be at the computer for a few hours. But many times I will forget and leave it @ 3.6GHz overnight. So far I have not had any adverse issues.
I also occasionally run it @ 3.8GHz @ 1.45VID if I am doing something I need the extra power for. But I do not like to run this setting for very long and usually stick with 3.6GHz. This is stable but runs hot.
As can be seen in my Sig I have also ran it @ 4.0GHz @1.48-1.5VID. None of these settings are stable long term and run way to hot. It works for a quick test to get a benchmark but will BSOD if ran for too long. -

On the forums, I'm "electrosoft."
On ebay, I'm, "electrosoft."

That's what I was going to say.
It also looks like someone took a wire brush and/or razor blade to it.

electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
Ouch, strike 1,2,3 there with that chip. The one ES X9000 I had many moons ago was a Q174.
-
Nice one thanks man, sort of post I was lookin for, think I'll run it at your 3.6ghz @ 1.35 VID
I've got it sittin on one of these:
Current temp is 35 and 40 degrees for the CPU
Made the same Internet one as well
What is slightly irritating is that if I want to have a high profile I need to unlock the max FID/VID right, then set what I want, thing is, if I then turn off the Throttlestop, it then bounces the profile up to the max setting you have, which basically means whenever you're restarting your machine you're going to be on this setting. This then means I have to hit the reset defaults thing whenever I wanna turn the machine off to avoid possible mess ups when booting into the OS. As far asI can see (from my experience of the BSOD on bootup when I'd set it too high), restarting the machine doesnt actually reset it to the defaults at all :/ -
how does that antec cooler above (also linked below to amazon)
Amazon.com: Antec Unbeatable Notebook Cooler 200: Electronics
how does that compare with the zalman below?
Amazon.com: Zalman ZM-NC2000Black Notebook Cooler (Black):
the reason i ask is because the one you have...it's dimentions are 13" wide x 11.2 inches deep x .866 inches height,
whereas the zalman is 15.7" wide x 12.5" deep x 1.7" height....
and my dragon, BARELEY fits the zalman 2000.
and the dragon's dimensions are 18.7" wide x 13.4" deep x 2.3″ height.
my dragon's rubber feet overlap the edges just a little on both sides of the zalman, the cooler you mentioned is even shorter an inch and a half more on both those sides...so i am wondering exactly how it's working in relation to the dragon.
for the record, my dragon, without the fans on at all...just the dragon sitting on the zalman, always gets 35-37C for the T8100 cpu when doing normal stuff, and 44-46C for the GPU 8800gts, when doing normal stuff, and the hard drive is around 41C...and i dont know what the analog devices, and the acpi is exactly, but there are several temps under those categories that hover in the mid 30's to mid 40's. -

In the HDX Owners thread, I see that it supposedly supports 8gb of ram... but when I try to put 8gb in, it doesn't work.
Is there something special I have to do to get 8gb working? I'm running bios F.40 Rev E, which is the latest listed on the HP site.
Thanks
