This what you want? I've gotten that resolution a long time ago for another notebook:

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    322756

( How to back up and restore the registry in Windows XP

) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start
    Collapse this imageExpand this image
    Start button
, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

    Collapse this imageExpand this image
    User Account Control permission
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
    3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
    4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
    5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
    6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
    7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Note After you remove the UpperFilters registry entry and the LowerFilters registry entry, you may lose functionality in certain programs such as CD recording programs. In this scenario, you must reinstall any affected programs. If the problem recurs, contact the program vendor to determine whether an update is available for the program.

For information about how to contact computer software vendors, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Are you saying those of use with a 2.5GHZ CPU X9300 could possibly overclock.. sort of? How do we know if we can, if that setting is in our BIOS?

Also the "Microsofthotfix KB960014" you would not help.

It can certainly be broken, but since I recently installed graphic drivers and several video editing programs, and almost NEVER use the DVD and NEVER EVER used the Blu Ray except for checking if it worked a few time, it is really too strange. (I don't have a restore point previous to my installations)

Also it is doing exactly what was doing when I first got the PC: play everything but not the Blu Rays (until I installed Quick Play 3.7... But it is you who don't believe me now, although it happened to several other people!) - Although I have to say that I don't remember whether at the time blu rays were 'found' by Windows but not read by Quickplay, as opposed to now, when the drive doesn't even 'see' them.

IMO there could be some 'unidentified' file or registry key that went missing somehow while messing around with the computer.

My Dragon (AKA The Beast!) has received a well earned boost today. I finally had a few hours spare to fit my new X9000 Processor.

In the end, all is well, with throttlestop boosting the clock speed to 3.6Ghz and system very stable.

However, I did manage to be a bit over-exhuberant with the GPU heatsink fan screw and damaged both the video cable and the webcam cable. Severering 3 tiny wires in the process. I did manage to patch them up and all is well with The Beast!

On first impressions, it adds a nice boost when running several applications at once and the CPUs never seem to be at 100% now, except under heavy loads or briefly during booting.

All in all, I'm a happy bunny and I'd like to thank those members here (particularly unclewebb, CompTrekkie and 2.0) who highlighted the opportunity to throttlestop the X9000.

Why aren't they compatible? They are based on the same core and both are MXM 3.0B. Wondering how to determine compatibility? Also, does the HDX9399SX have an integrated graphics circuit on the mobo so when the video card goes bad it should still display something if you take the graphics card out? I am trying to figure out if I need a replacement graphics card or not; the dragon turns on but nothing comes up on display internally or on an external monitor. All the lights come on and hard drives spin? What do you guys think?

HDX is MXM III v2.1. There are also BIOS limitations. Plus the 260M won't even mate with the heatsink. The only card that is compatible with the HDX is the 8800M GTS made for it. Meaning standard 8800M GTS MXM cards won't fit or work properly.

As for your situation, yes, your GPU is toast. You can order a new one from HP.

Enter part number 454311-001 in the HP part surfer; HP PartSurfer

    Should cost you $300 shipped.

You will need the service manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01279508.pdf

Could baking the card recover it? I have heard of lots of GPU issues being fixed by baking the GPU cards to create new solder contacts. What do you think about that?

Definitely worth a shot. In fact, I think a few pages back someone might have done that successfully.

While you're in there, clean them fans out. Best time to do it. Use a Q-tip dipped in isoproply alcohol to clean the fan blades too.

Any advice on time/temp to do this bake at? I did it at about 425F for about 10 minutes and it didn't help at all, but I didn't get the "solder smell" when I took it out either so maybe wasn't enough? What do you think? Thanks, Sean.

After 2 unsuccessful bakes, I'm pretty sure this GPU is not coming back to life. I do have another question though, maybe this will answer the GPU problem; if the mxm GPU card is removed completely from teh mobo should there be an onboard CPU graphics process that should still get you into bios on an external VGA monitor? On other laptops I know that is the case but I am not sure on these Dragons. I have the HDX9399SX, if anybody knows the answer to this question I would really appreciate it. If there is supposed to be a mobo graphics possibility then I need a new mobo if not I need a new GPU card. Thanks in advance!

No there isn't any other graphics capability on the motherboard. Graphics is handled exclusively through the GPU.

Yes, it will fit. But it likely won't work because of the BIOS. Worse still, even if it did, it will downclock considerably because of the FSB @ 800 mhz.

that forces me to press and hold the power til it shuts down.

anyway...can you link me to that driver (i have vista 64 bit) and give me instructions on how to install? pretty please....? :p

    Evening Chaps,

Been a while since I've been on here. I have finally moved up to using a digital box for my tv. I've used my current cable just plugged straight into the back of my Dragon fine for over 2 years so I'm wondering how I can record digital channels now that it will be going through a box.

    Thank you for your help

Extract it using winrar. Eliminate Nv_disp.inf (keep NV_WHQL). Then install. :)

Make sure you uninstall your current driver using device manager, checking the delete driver box. Ideally you would want to get back to the VGA driver. The way to do that is you keep rebooting and deleting the next driver windows installs via device manager until you boot up with the Standard VGA driver. Then install the 197.45.

If you have been installing drivers on top of other drivers, this process could take a while.

Technically, you can't. At least not as HDTV. Only way to record HDTV is via an antenna connected to the HDX. That would be OTA(over the air) HDTV.

If your cable box is capable of outputting S-Video, you can connect it to the HDX's S-Video input. As I recall, Quickplay can record S-video input. But the video quality will be in standard def.

I believe Dominick 7 uses external hardware that he connects to the HDX to record HDTV. But I'm not 100% positive.

Yea you can do it the ways 2.0 mentioned via Svideo. Firewire is another way to get even better quality, which of course is an input found on our Dragon. You can use firestb (do a search for it online) for Vista or XP, which is a free way to record via firewire. I find if it's HD programming you sometimes get that annoying flashing static-y looking line on the top of the screen, but it looks pretty good this way, though definitely better than SVideo. If you can get the the XB3000 Dock to work properly, that's a way I'm thinking you could do HD recording possibly. I kept getting problems with trying to get the other Dock to work with the HDX, though I have yet to try the XB3000.

The BEST way I've found to not only watch TV and do HD recordings from anything from my cable box (live) that you would really LIKE, WANT, and ENJOY looking at is to do recording via a Hauppauge HD PVR, for up to 1080i recording. It's a fantastic device really! You can save your recorded files into several formats, be it M2TS (PS3), or MP4 (which works with almost everything including Xbox 360, servers, conversion, etc), or others I think too. It will come with TotalMedia Extreme software (for free) which you can update (not to the most recent version for free but to a VERY comparable version) which is sufficient and takes up less system resources. Sometimes I wonder why I upgraded to the newest TotalMedia as the free one you get with the Hauppauge HD PVR does the job as well. The free version also COMES WITH the media converter, where as if you get the newest version they are sold separately..

If you use Firefox, you can use an endless pages type add on that will load each successive page of the forum. I don't know of any offhand, but I know they exist.

@ 2.0 & Dominick, I'm very grateful for your advice. I do believe though that I gave the wrong impression. I only want to record the new digital channels off my new set top box, not HD. If it's the same deal either way, then I thank you for your patience and continued support.

Yea that happens if you don't use the 5111 audio driver which is light. You get the cracks pops and stuff with the usually recommended one which comes with the treble and bass controls. 5111 don't come with them I don't think.

Glad I could help. Any of them can be done with either HD or non HD broadcasting. The quality of the video will depend on the choice and quality of the cable and what output quality you set your box to.. be it standard, 720p, 1080i, etc. I didn't mean to apply this only to HD programming, but was trying to say that you can go from standard to better quality recordings via degrees/increments, depending on the cable choice/quality whether the show is standard or HD. A show broadcast in standard resolution will look better with Svideo than with coaxial I think. Likewise firewire will look better than Svideo no matter the broadcast resolution, and I think if you got the dock working the video quality would be even better possibly since it has a component cable input. If it so happens you are getting free HD programming/free over the air it will obviously look the best via component. This is what the Hauppauge HD PVR can use as well.

EDIT: You can't use the component port on the dock because it's only an output. My bad.

I've tried a multitude of drivers (HP, nVidia, DOX, modded and even Desktop!) and none seem to "solve" the problem. Believe it or not, the original HP driver was the most successful driver I've used allowing me to play games like Unreal Tournament 3, Far Cry II and Left4Dead without the "vector effect" shown in the video. But when I install any newer driver, those same games have the flashing "vanishing point" vectors.
Other games, like Assassin's Creed, Turok, Half Life, Mercenaries 2, Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, Crysis, Devil May Cry 4, Dead Space, Crysis: Warhead, Arkham Asylum, All the CODs, Resident Evil 5, Bioshock, Protoype, Dead Space, F.E.A.R. and others play fine with any old driver.
Some games and fine, others aren't. I just don't get it.
Other games, I haven't been able to play at all because the flashing vectors were so bad, like ARMAII.
I was starting to think it might be a hardware problem. I know the 8800 cards are far from all perfect.

I also tried the latest driver from nVidia (258.96) and it installed fine, but after a while the screen fades to black and I cannot do anything but a hard reset. Anyone else experiencing this?
Needless to say, I rolled back to an older driver.

Short of trying to find a second hand 8800m GTS from a knackered Dragon, I don't know what else to do?

If anyone could shed any light on my problem I would be most appreciative.

    TIA,

    CJ

OK then I must be doing something wrong, because Sandbox doesn't work when i install either driver for the sound. It will install, and it will hear the sound from whatever I am playing, but I can't hear it from the speakers of headphones. Back to the drawing board. Thanks Dom.

Here are the instructions 2.0 posted a while back:

Steps to set it all up.

    1. Verify that you have bass with your currently installed driver (5511, 5607, or 5929) with the following bass test MP3:

    http://sinan.ussakli.net/basstest/5-100.mp3

    2. If yes, then close down windows media or whatever you used to play the above file. If you used WMplayer and after closing it down, it's still playing, open the task manager, and stop the wmplayer32.exe process.

    3. Install the SRS Audio Sandbox: 3X9PR24RQHP6

    64 bit version for 64bit Vista: http://downloads.srs-store.com/SRS_Audio_Sandbox_64.exe

    32 bit version for 32bit Vista: http://www.srswowcast.com/about_us/w....asp?lnkID=102

The webpage where it comes from: http://www.srslabs.com/store/audioproducts.asp

    4. Open The SRS control panel (dbl click round blue bubble in taskbar) and click options. Click preferences. In devices dialog, choose Speaker/HP.
You have to close everything out, close out WIndows Media Player, SRS, re open and it should all work!

    5. FOR 64BIT VISTA ONLY: You will need to set Windows Media player to default to 64bit version.

Open Command prompt as administrator. (right click it in Start/Accessories/). Type in the following hitting ENTER when done: unregmp2 /SwapTo:64
    Close the command prompt.

Now open REGEDIT. (In start search box, just type in regedit).
    Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\wmplayer.exe.

Set the registry subkey Path to be %ProgramFiles%\Windows Media Player, from %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Media Player
and the (Default) subkey to “%ProgramFiles%\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe” (include quotes) from "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe".

Edit: THE DEFAULT SUBKEY WAS ALREADY LIKE THAT ACTUALLY SO KEEP IT THAT WAY..

Note that you are simply deleting the (x86) portion from those entries. To restore it, simply put (x86) back.

    6. Reboot.

    ENJOY!

Got me to playing around though, and I discovered I have a problem. No matter what driver I use, I have only the "front" two speakers working, left and right. I have used the 5607, 5929, and several others, including original. No matter what I do, or what settings I use, when I click test, sound only emits from those two speakers. The sad thing is, I have used a gaming headset exclusively for so long, that I don't know when the problem started.

The sound out of these two speakers sounds great, but to be truthful, I didn't test sound much when I first got the HDX and the sound was/is such an improvement over my other laptop that I may not have had them working ever. Sad, huh? I can only imagine what I'm missing.

Anyway, do you or others have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
You'll have to start from scratch to isolate the problem.

    Uninstall using this method:

    1. Control panel/device manager.

    2. Go to Sound Video and Game controllers. Expand the tree.

    3. Right click the IDT high definition codec. Choose uninstall BUT makes sure you check the "Delete the driver software for this device" box. Do this for all audio drivers listed there if you have more than one (if windows 7 clean install the rest is unnecessary.. just install 5111 over the default audio driver it came with..no need to delete or uninstall it).

    4. Collapse the Sound Video and Game controllers tree. Now right click that collapsed tree and choose scan for hardware changes. It will load the Vista default Microsoft driver. When it's done doing that it will pop up a message from that taskbar. In that tree will be Microsoft's "high definition audio codec" driver.

    5. reboot.

    6. After reboot, make sure it is still there and didn't reload back the IDT driver.

    7. Now install the 5111. You'll have to reboot when it's done. before you do, make sure the speaker icon in the taskbar has sound waves graphic eminating from it. If it's a red "X'. You'll have to delete the driver as per step 3 moving onto step 4 again, then step 5.

After reboot, test for bass with the following MP3s:

    http://sinan.ussakli.net/basstest/si...ample10sec.mp3
    http://sinan.ussakli.net/basstest/5-100.mp3

    In this last test, if you hear nothing, then subwoofer is not working;
    http://sinan.ussakli.net/basstest/TH...ery Loud.mp3

One of the problems with installing the 5929 and higher is that they don't uninstall completely if you use programs and features to uninstall the driver's softwar. They leave a vestige of themselves in registery and elsewhere that when you reinstall 5607 or 5511 afterwards, it's not a clean install and you lose bass.

Just curious about why you're running Vista 64 rather than Windows 7. Do you prefer it? I know that some do.

I agree. Sometimes minimalism goes too far. I don't like newer versions of Office which simplified the UI to the point of confusion. Luckily, there's Open Office.

Some people also prefer Vista's Media Center.

So if I were to just stick with my current set up (better quality isn't really an option due to HDD space, haven't felt the urge to get an external one, maybe Black Friday) just using coaxial straight from the box to my computer, I should be able to record like normal as if it were coming straight out of the wall?

Is your GPU overclocked or at default clocks? Too much of an overclock can cause that.

Otherwise, I have to agree that it is probably a hardware problem. I have many of the games you listed and haven't experienced that issue on either HDX. And I'm always running an overclock on the GPU on both.

    I'm on driver 197.45.

If it's digital cable, then no. Unless they still broadcast SDV (standard definition video.) Where I'm at, Cablevision still broadcasts SDV on about 30 channels. The other 500+ are all digital.

There's an easy fix for that actually. I had the same impression when I first played with the beta.

Anyway, you set the taskbar property to never combine. when you do this, it simply groups similiar windows nest to each other which is a very nice feature. Pinned objects will just have an icon to the right of the start menu button. what is active will have a full title. Also, mousing over an active window on the taskbar will pop up a mini screen of what it is. And if any windows are grouped together, the mousover will bring up a mini window of the entire group.

It's pretty awesome and is how windows should have always been, IMO.

Win7 is also faster and more stable. I recommend it whenever you get around to it. You won't regret it. Hopefully they will bring back the $50 upgrade price.
