    Thanks! So I went ahead and ordered the Hitachi 320GB 7200rpm hdd and installed it today. You're right, installing it was a piece of cake. It was the cloning part that became a pain in the ***. Acronis True Image was giving me some privilege error that won't allow me to clone the disk at all, and Macrium Reflect gave me another error right at the end of finishing the task. Finally I just used Partition Manager to copy the entire hard drive, which took almost 6 hours! Then there was some boot error which luckily, the program's rescue media was able to fix.

    Now that I'm finally up and running with the new hdd, I can say that it is very noticeably faster, especially the startup time and general tasks performed within windows explorer. I was worried that it might not have been worth it to spend the money (almost $120 with the new hdd & an eSATA enclosure, but not yet discounting the $70 credit HP gave back to me), but fortunately it was worth it. The Hitachi also seems a little quieter on top of being faster. :)

    I disabled the "fan always on" option in bios and was wondering if there would be any problems with it getting too hot. I use the Targus Podium Coolpad and it sits there all day.

Please feel freeto shoot me an email as well if you find anything ino or discounts.

    Great forums here, I've been reading for a while but just signed up. I am the proud owner of a HP HDX16T. The first thing I did was reload it fresh, I have all the drivers loaded. The one issue I have is with the remote control. Does anyone know what software or driver I need to have the remote control work? I apologize if someone already asked this, thanks in advance.

    Hi Lap Top!

    I'm highly inclined on purchasing an HDX 16t myself this Christmas, although I'm planning on geting the ones from either Best Buy or Walmart... It almost has the same specs - though with the P8400 processor / 4GB RAM / 1366x768 display.

    And I'd be doing lots of FS9 / FSX (plus the usual Word-Excel-Powerpoint), how does this machine perform? Won't be setting it to all sliders max, though I'm very keen on having 100% AI.

    Thanks!

    I'm glad you found it pretty easy and was able to do it w/o any mess-ups lol...anyhow...i think it would be better if you make the recovery dvds (it takes 2 dvds). Then do a recovery from the dvds, and you won't have any problems. I recommend that everyone makes their recovery discs like the first day.

    I disabled the fan as well, the bottom of the laptop got really hot, especially where memory is located. Then the fan went on and lots of hott air went out the vents. It's better to have the fan running as it keeps the air flowing and keeps the laptop cool. When components are heated, they start losing their life faster, just my 2 cents.

    thanks for the link, i had been looking for it, just didnt check it in last week or so.

    You need to install Infrared Driver. the remote is via IR, wish it was BT instead.

    I think that the 9600 can handle FSX and FS9 well, theres a video on youtube with FSX running on max settings on the 9600m gt but it was a bit laggy, i guess that you can get medium-high settings with the hdx16 and run it without problems.

    You're right, I found that video on YouTube and found it to be a bit stuttery... I've been using an old Centrino laptop with (heaven forbid) GMA950 so just imagine how I sufferred all those years!

    Thanks again, I hope it's January already so I can get my hands on the HDX16

    I have that installed already, the ENE CIR Receive driver

    There must be something else I'm missing, I reloaded fresh not using HP's recovery at all, maybe there is something else I'm missing. If not what are the possibilities they actually shipped me a dead battery or remote?

    I picked up the new Call of Duty: World at War about 2 weeks ago, it runs pretty well on my HDX. Maxed settings, 1366 x 768, 8x AF, FPS is 30-60+. In other words, looks great and runs smooth :) Online is very addictive, especially zombie mode!

    It's quite possible that you have a dead battery. Turn the laptop off, and point the remote at the laptop and hit the power button on the remote. laptop should power on. If it works, something is missing in your install, if it doesn't work, you have a dead remote or battery.

    It hasn't been 60 days yet, but so far so good. At one point, it showed 0 days until I can claim it, but I sent an email to them asking about it and it now shows that I can request it in 18 days. I will post back once I actually get it. Cashback also has a 25% off on eBay purchases. You have to be careful though, because you can only link to eBay about 10 times before it is disabled. If you use it, i would recommend that you find what you want to buy before linking thru cashback. I didn't realize that was how it works, and now I can't use it.

    Thanks for getting back to me, I looked online and the hdx has gone up by 120 dollars in the last day or so with extra charges on the system core and the lightscribe unit. If I knew for sure that cash back worked , or if it didn;t work I could return the system, I would buy soon, but hoping the black friday/cyber monday sales include a big instant rebate. As for your cashback isues of cutting off after a short while, have you tried delteing your cookies and temp int. files including offline content? This should clear that tracking code so it can r enew fresh, jsut an idea, but see if it works.

    Unfortunately with the cashback, they make you wait until after your return period is over before they give you the cash back. I understand why, but that doesn't help you buy the system now before you know for sure if I actually get mine. I will try to post back when my time is up. You might also want to hold out until HP offers a stackable coupon code again. Below is what I got. It probably won't come out all lined up, but essentially the first amount for each item was before discounts. The 2nd price is after the coupon was applied and the instant rebates. Obviously this does not include the cashback. Since the original order, I have gotten an several additional credits totaling over $250. The cashback amount was almost $400 and was not affected by the other credits that I have since received. At least it hasn't been affected yet. That remains to be seen of course. So, bottom line price wise, I will end up getting about $1300 off.

    It's not dead, it will actually turn the laptop on, it just doesn't work in Windows. I threw in the hard drive that came with the laptop and that does work with Windows. There must be something else I need that isn't under the drivers page for the HDX16T.

    ok i'm sorry if this questions been answered already. i skipped around the 83 pages and didn't see any mention of it, so if it was discussed before, you can just copy the reply. anyways...

    i just ordered my HDX today and had a question about the bluray capabilities via HDMI. Can the software that comes with it (the quickplay or cyberlink DVD suite...not sure) output dolby TrueHD and DTS-Master Audio? I've been searching all day for the answer but to no success. Thanks in advance.

    suland, do you have any issues with your volume display as mine will keep causing errors and the display does not go away unless i shut down the process manually in task manager (on Quicktouch 1.00C)
    i have tried Quicktouch 1.00D but that disables on-screen volume display for 64-bit machines..
    my hdx16 had the green bars from the factory and i can not find this software anywhere so i was hoping someone who had a factory install of windows could verify this for me

    Im pretty sure it does since it uses those technologies to output sound anyways wheter it were through the speakers on the laptop or external speakers so the same sound quality should be followed through via hdmi

    What exactly are you trying to do with it windows. I just installed the CIR driver and it worked flawlessly with VLC. I don't know what to tell you, if you've installed the drivers, it should work w/o any problems.

    It's been discussed before, nobody likes their pricing strategy. The bigger problem is they add new options every few days, and take some options out every few days.

    it should support those outputs, but there is a possibility it does not. Most of the OEM software is w/o "extra" plug-ins. I haven't used that software, but I've used Cyberlink Power DVD and I know for a fact it supports those outputs. you can find the software bundled with many dvd-drives, even the ones start for $10 or so online.

    thanks to Jadb91 and xtreme571,

    i guess i was just wondering how it is as a standalone blu-ray player, like BD Live and what profile it is (1.1 2.0?) and the audio output. I'm not really sure how bluray roms really work. oh well, i guess i'll find out in a week or two.

    you can get all the bd-live features if you are connected to the internet. I really don't like whole bunch of "extra features". During the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD battle, they said you can have streaming video on top of the movie (PIP) showing the actual location of the shot. I honestly would rather watch the movie w/o any interruptions or distractions. I've got so many movies, I've never bothered to go into the extra features screen or the "BONUS" stuff. But thats a personal preference, IMO it just ruins the movie by showing you how they did what they did.

    can anyone elaborate on how "readable" the fonts are at 1920x1080 resolution pls in word/excel, general web browsing?

    i currently use a 5 year old 19" samsung crt at 1024x768 res.
    how "big" or rather small a difference is it on a 16" notebook at full hd resolution?

    its pretty easily readable. most apps like word/excel, firefox/ie have zoom feature if its hard 2 read. spreadsheets look NICE with such a high res screen, easier to have a huge spreadsheet. The resolution you are using now vs 1080p, there is a lot of difference. At first you may think everything is really small, but you will get use 2 it in no time.

    you can always use a lower res on a Hi-res screen, it just doesnt feel right after you get use to the hi-res tho.

    you can change your font DPI in windows vista from 96 dpi (default) to 120 dpi (a little too big) or even custom size your own (I found 106 dpi to be quite good)
    just goto personalize and then change DPI from the left menu

    It's called Economics.

    It's a business thing. They have accountants looking at several different business models and they try to price their laptops as close to the competition as possible. Also- supply and demand can play a factor here as well. Many people might be opting out for the BR player, and rather than get stuck with a bunch of those- they may discount them.

    It's no different than a gas station. Ever drive by and see the same exact price you paid last week, last month, last year?

    Hi,

    Can someone please tell me if this is a good deal for a HDX16t notebook, given recent purchases and deals:

    * – Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    * – Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
    * – 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
    * – FREE Upgrade to 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    * – 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    * – FREE Upgrade to 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    * – Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
    * – HP Color Matching Keyboard
    * – Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
    * – FREE Upgrade to Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    * – No TV Tuner w/remote control
    * – 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    * – No Productivity Software
    * – HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

    The total comes out to $1,159.99 with free shipping, excluding tax, and using an employee discount. I wasn't able to stack any other coupons I could find. Can I use the live search discount too? I'm wondering if I should buy now or wait a few more days or weeks as it gets closer to Xmas. Thanks for your help!!!

    lol makes sense to me, they see people going for faster processors they increase the price then lower it somewhere else i just reconfigured with the new pricing and the difference was about 40 dollars less even though i payed 100 dollars for blu ray and 100 for the hard drive. who cares they give the widest choice of customization anyways let them screw with us

    The employee discount is $240, plus there is also an HP offer right now for $200 instant rebate.

    You don't necessarily have to be an HP employee either, I work for red lobster and we get the hp employee discount since darden restaurants uses hp servers for their restaurants. I have a similar setup to what most people are looking at and I paid 973 +tax w/ free shipping

    I'm an HP employee too. How do you apply the employee discount? Thanks.
