If you know what you're getting, you probably know where the box is. Why don't you just discreetly unpack it and use it until the 23rd, and then return it to the box at that time?

Hah, ours must be in the same shipment, mine in the same place and time. Hopefully it's here tomorrow... my last laptop was delayed by like 2 weeks due to a customs delay.

It runs games smoothly, I havent had a chance to run it at full resolution with everything on to see how that is, but with 1024x768 and most things on it ran very smoothly.

I will do some more testing once my final is over with on thursday.

Hey, I am thinking about buying this laptop for college and for a little bit of gaming. I was wondering whether this would be a good choice and I am also wondering whether this laptop is for sale in stores or strictly online. Thanks for your help.

i go to college too and ordered one, im not sure how practical its going to be but regarding size its very close to the dv5, weight im not sure... you can buy it online off hp.com if you want to customize it or if you want you can just buy preconfigured ones from bestbuy or other retail stores.

oo thanks jad..i just checked my local bestbuy and they carry it in the store however i am just wondering if anyone would recommend ordering it off of hp.com or from a local store. I am also wondering whether I should upgrade to a 12-cell battery because it may be necessary or beneficial for carrying around a college campus.

the 12cell battery sticks out of the bottom of the notebook, so if that doesn't bother you then its good to go.

as for the laptop: im in college and it works very well, it plays games if you need it and it has the proc power to do most of anything you want.

i would say build your own and make sure its what you want in it, but if the prebuilt one is what you want do it and buy a 12 cell from somewhere (stick to name brands so it doesnt break/overheat/destroy your notebook)
12-cell that i have lasts from 4-6 hours so its worth it in my opinion.

theedyeah: thanks for posting all the feedback on your laptop! I got my order delivered but have been out of the country so can't play with it for another 2 weeks. i got the same screen resolution as you but was worried i should've upgraded to 1080p. any thoughts on it so far? easy to read or wish things could be smaller?

My wife saw a "hot Deal" when paying our Discover card bill online. %30 off hp notebooks plus 10% cash back on the card! Terms were excluding the HDX16t (and some other models) but the HDX18 was not excluded; offer good on notebook orders exceeding $1000, discount does not apply to add-ons like extra display, docking station, etc.; 500 coupons available. The last term I listed was the deal breaker. I tried the coupon on the HDX18 and the system wouldn't take it. Called the HP sales and the gentleman said he couldn't get close to the %30 discount right now.

I'm a patient man, so far. I'll wait till a couple weeks after xmas, then I'm gonna get impatient I think. See what comes up.

By the way, I noticed the TV tuner is not available right now. Wonder why and if it's coming back. at 40% off of $100 I'd probably take it :)

    @aquaGeek
TV-Tuner option will be available once the coupons available now are exhausted. I've been following these trends HP Is doing. they change their options when new coupons come out. So when you notice a different configuration available, there is certainly a new coupon code available. I've also noticed that when TV tuner is not offered the available coupons are better than coupons available when TV tuner is offered.

although I do wish I did up the screen to 1080p, i think that being on a budget and this being my first laptop, i have no room to complain.

It would be a nice feature, but not totally needed. It is more useful to make the blu-rays look nice, but for games I dont think that the 9600 would be able to push most new games to that resolution without overheating.

If i wasnt so rushed because of the live 40% cashback I would have stopped and upgraded my screen resolution, but that is just because I am used to having the resolution at 1680x1050 (22" acer for my desktop)

I am still suprised at how well the HDX 16 runs with what I throw at it. Its not hot either which I am very happy about.

Thanks for sharing about the lack of exessive heat. I had read in these forums that people have experienced heat problems with (I think) the dv7t. I wonder if there's a significant difference in the design relating to heat exchange on the dv7t versus hdx16? Position of fan, ventilation, etc. Looking for reasons behind the observations.

I am not sure about the dv7t, but I do know that there are a few ventilation holes by the HDD bay (which is also the memory bay).

there is a fan in the back left for i think the processor and video card, it does shoot out warm air, its not hot or burning though,

I have had it on my lap for about 2-3 hours and it is like having a light blanket on my lap. I am looking for software that will let me see the temperatures of my motherboard, proc, vid card while in vista.

How do you find the portability on the HDX16? I realize it's bigger then the dv5t, of course, however, how is it to lug around? Since the two are about the same price for how I config them, it just seems the HDX16 is so much more laptop?

for portability: I have used it all over my house so far, I am still installing stuff on it for use for when I go away to college.

I would say its large but not too big, it does have some weight to it but I am a big guy so it doesn't really phase me much.

I got the 12cell battery so that sticks out of the bottom so it makes mine heavier, but not too much heavier at least i dont think.

i guess for me its not that its heavy, its that its as good as my desktop and i can carry it anywhere i want to. i guess thats what I look at more so than the weight.

I just got my brand new HDX16t a couple days ago.

With the power cord plugged in, I can wiggle the plug a little bit: it has about 10 to 15 degrees of wiggle on it and it has already unplugged on me at least once while just surfing from my couch. THis is without any kind of tension on the power cord at all. Is this normal for the HDX16? If not, any chance HP would send me a new one instead of servicing it?

I'm considering the HDX 16t, and would like a nice bright display. Does anyone know what the nits/ contrast specs are for the 16/18t ? Lenovo's W series has displays at 200/400 nits, but quite $$$$$. Thanks

gladyitch: Where can I find those specs?
I have one, and it is bright when plugged in (dims to save battery life when unplugged), but if it is located somewhere on the computer then i can find it.

    Nehalem:
I do not think thats a good thing. they would service it before replacing it i believe, You can give them a call though to see what they would do.

I got my HDX16T today...opened it and put a fresh coy of Vista Ultimate on it. unfortunately the HDTV drivers are the only ones I can't find and the support page on HP is only an update for the HDTV program. Any ideas besides paying the $30 to have a recovery CD mailed to me?

Hey, I recently ordered my HP HDX16 from hp.com on the 11th, and they said the estimated build date was the 19th. I got all of my order besides the laptop today and it was shipped from Missouri and took 2 days to get to my front door. I was just wondering how long it took to build your laptops and if it ships from MS as well or a different location. Thanks for your help, I am sorry im just too impatient for it to come i wish it came with all the other stuff today haha.

It ships from china, and for most of us when we ordered it, we were told it would be built on the 9th, but most of us got it on the 9th. so hopefully you will get it on the 19th. :)

but yes, it does ship from china due to it being built there.

be glad though: it is much worth the wait.

This is question for those of you with the 12 cell battery in your HDX 16t, what do you mean by the battery "sticks out"? Is this sticking out a big deal? Does it look like it doesn't belong? Also, how long does that particular battery go without charging? Thank you for the info.

I just got done submitting my review that does address the battery issue.

my 12-cell does stick out of the bottom of my HDX 16, but all the hp 12cells do. It looks perfectly fine. my 12-cell battery lasts 3-4 hours while gaming (with wireless active), and about 5-6 hours of surfing and typing (i do shut off a few things such as wireless and change brightness to get that much time out of the recharge, but it is worth it.)

It is not a big deal, it actually helps significantly with the heat dispersion of this unit. (by raising it ~1 inch off the back end allows the fan in the back to shoot out the warm air that the proc and video card create and allows cooler air to flow back in) i highly recommend it, or get both batteries because that would be worth it too. in my opinion.
