Anyone put a clear skin on their machine?

Hey guys, why most of the laptops 16" are 16.4" and HP insists with he 16".
I'm thinking about to buy one, but for me 16.4" seems to be more wide.
Is my last doubt about the laptop. -
It may be a marketing decision, whether they want to say its a 16" or 16.4" screen. Although, I don't mind the screen at all. My previous laptop had 17" screen, and it wasn't widescreen. -
And what about the screen quality?
I was with an Acer Aspire 6935G and the screen is pretty bad, if you move your head like 20cm, orange becomes red, green becomes blue. Awful for movies.
Then I saw the Vaio FW series, amazing quality no color distortion at all, i'm very impressed with the screen.
Is the HP like the Vaio? Or at least is ok? -
the screen is great,
it doesn't change color moving left to right (at least with the 1366x768 screen)
its very nice in my opinion. -
hey guys, i have a question:
how do you confirm whether the treble/bass slider works or does anything? i did a clean install and do not seem to remember installing drivers for the mediasmart bar up top, but the volume slider, mute, and other buttons seem to be working. the button to switch from treble to bass works, but i dont know if setting the slider works. is there a display dialogue that shows the treble/bass settings? i can't seem to find it.
thanks! -
there is a display that pops up when you adjust either the volume or the bass or the treble.
the drivers for that are not on the hp website, i think someone mentioned that they got them off of the dv7 support area, but im not sure.
but yes there is another driver somewhere for it. -
hrm, the volume slider works without having on-screen popup. i guess that function is supposed to be prebuilt. the bass/treble adjustment definitely does not have the pop up. if the drivers aren't on the hp website, they should be on the computer's SWSetup folder, then. i backed it up on dvd prior to reinstalling, so i guess i'll go look in there. after taking out the drivers that i've already installed and the bloatware setup files, i've narrowed it down to one of the following (assuming it is even in there).
C:\Swsetup\ESUVT\ESU.CVA
C:\Swsetup\HPASL\sp39516.cva
C:\Swsetup\HPUpdate\HPSU.cva
C:\Swsetup\HSC\SP39259.cva
C:\Swsetup\Inetsec\Sym.cva
C:\Swsetup\MSDVD\MSDVD.cva
C:\Swsetup\MSMenu\SmartMenu.cva
C:\Swsetup\MSMVP\MSMVP.cva
C:\Swsetup\MSTV\MSTV.cva
C:\Swsetup\QLB\SP40139.cva
C:\Swsetup\sw_ver\325670B2.CVA
C:\Swsetup\sw_ver\OCAMRK.CVA
C:\Swsetup\sw_ver\TPV3HP00.CVA
C:\Swsetup\UG0115\UG0115.CVA
any thoughts as to which one is the volume/bass/treble driver? -
I believe the on screen treble/bass is via the HP MediaSmart SmartMenu. The HP file is called sp41599.exe

im finally going to get my hdx16 on wednesday i cant wait
by the way for anyone here who might consider using "shipitapo" the box arrived with a big dent in it like someone had punched it, luckily the laptop wasn't physically damaged but it was a close call. ill try to put up pictures and a review as soon as i get it since ive realised theres a lack of hdx16 coverage online.
-
Mine is not even shipping until 12/30 and I ordered on 12/15, must be on a slow boat.
Don't forget to post your thoughts and pictures. -

Was updating/checking the price on my dv5t earlier.....but felt like checking the HDX series out, just to see how much more a HDX16t with the same specs would go for. Imagine my surprise when I find I'd save roughly $100 (after tax--$60 after tax if I went the 2 day shipping route) by going with this powerhouse
This is what I was going to go with on the dv5t.....
-Onyx
-Vista Home Premium (32bit)
-Core 2 Duo P7350 (2.0GHz)
-WXGA HP BrightView High Def. Display (1280x800)
-3GB DDR2 Memory
-512MB nVidia 9600M GT Graphics
-160GB Hard Drive (5400RPM)
-Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
-Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N MiniCard
-SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW
-12-Cell Lithium Ion Battery
-HP System Recovery DVD
On the HDX16t I outfitted, those specs are the same with the following exceptions.....
-Better Display (BrightView Infinity)
-Larger Hard Drive (500GB as opposed to 160 or 250 <free upgrade> on the
dv5t)
If the $200 instant rebate holds til the end of January (which I suspect it will--retailers wanting to carry over the momentum from the holidays & so forth)....one of these beasts will be on order I think -
Just joined HDX16 owners club
this is what I got
Core 2 Duo P8400
4GB Ram
320GB HDD
9600M GT
1920*1080 Screen
TV Tuner -
Congrats on everyone's new HDX 16's
I am glad you all got them, and hopefully they run super well.
If you have any questions post them here! -
I wish I would have bought mine yesterday! I waited another day, waiting for deals, and then they fixed the 500 GB hard-drive problem! So...hopefully there will be another big deal or a great coupon code in the coming week! Can't wait to get my hands on one of these!
-
-
I FINALLY GOT MY LAPTOP!!! i love the thing! i just got my hands on it but i noticed a small problem when i play music, with loud volume the sub-woofer gives off a high frequency rattling sound, im not really sure how to describe it but it doesnt happen with all songs i play. i would like to know if anyone else noticed this with their laptop or is there something wrong with my speakers?
-
Uninstall IDT audio driver and download realtek HD.
-
nice thanks alot man!
-
My exchange shows it was ordered and in production 12/13 and still there now. Expected ship date of 12/30, ah well i'll just have to wait.
-
So, do any of you think there is a possibility that HP will come out with an 8-cell battery any time soon for the HDX 16t, or do you think we'll have to wait to order one of their newer 6-cell batteries after they start producing them in 2009?
-
hey, i have another question, i have vista 64bit and there are about 91-93 processes running when im not doing anything on the laptop and i havent even installed any programs yet this is factory setting. just want to know which programs are totally useless and causing this high number of processes so i can get rid of them, thanks.
-
If you want to go more in depth, click the 'Performance' tab -> 'Resource Monitor' -> 'Memory' and it'll give you the same information with a real-time graph to boot -
HP's website has announced $500 off till 5 Jan 09 on this lappie, if you are interested.
-
I didn't cancel it yet because I think I want to get both and then return the loser.
-
-
Nvm, just changed my time zone to check it out. I think I'll wait for a coupon code, as the deal just isn't that great! I mean, a big part of that $500 is savings on an extended warranty!
-
And, I apologize for the triple post, but are there any cases you guys would recommend for this yet? Or cooling pads? Or, should I wait a few months for more to come out for the 16" platform?
-
ok so i uninstalled the IDT drivers and installed realteak HD audio the distortion from the subwoofer is still there and now the bass/treble bars dont show up on screen and the mute buttons doesnt turn orange when i press it. any other solutions?
-
As for cooling pads.... the NZXT Cryo LX seems to be the best bet for these IMO (check out the Cooling Pad Guide in the 'Accessories' sub-section). Still looking at cases here..... -
Hello,
New user here hoping this hasn't been addressed before. I tried searching for an answer but this site requires you to wait 40 seconds between searches and it could take me ten minutes to exhaust all the possible ways to search for an answer...
Anyhow, I just got a new HDX. Thrilled with it so far except for some issues with the keyboard and mouse buttons. For some reason the mouse buttons require more pressure than I would like but I'm adapting to that.
The other problem is not so easy to live with. The backspace and enter keys make a squeaky noise when I press them. Especially if I press them rapidly they squeak like crazy. The backspace key is loud as can be just from tapping it once, but usually the enter key only acts up if I press it rapidly.
This needs to be fixed but I don't trust HP service. About five years ago I had another HP laptop that had monitor issues. I sent it back to HP under warranty. They returned it to me with the exact same problem (said they couldn't replicate the problem) and a fresh Windows install with EVERYTHING else wiped out.
First of all there was no reason to wipe out my hard drive due to a monitor problem. Second of all they could have at least restored the laptop to the same state it was in when I purchased it with all the bundled software but it came back with Windows and nothing else. Plus the monitor wasn't fixed
So my fear is I send the laptop back to HP, they deny there is a problem with the keyboard, then they wipe out everything on my hard drive and return my computer with a clean Vista install and nothing else.
Is anyone else experiencing squeaky keys or mouse buttons that require a lot of pressure?
Has HP support gotten any better with respect to fixing computers? Do they still automatically to a clean Windows install regardless of why you send the computer in? Is there any way to have it fixed locally under warranty?
The computer is brand new, it was delivered two weeks ago and I didn't even unpack it for the first week. Very annoying to have such an expensive computer have problems straight out of the box.
TIA -
I would back up the HDD and then send it in.
but that is just my idea of a reasonable idea.
since it is a physical thing (unlike a monitor issue that is specific) it should be more obvious.
You can call customer support and ask if they can give you a local store that can repair it quicker than shipping it to them to have them fix it.
other than that you might have to bite the bullet and send it in -

Can you guys recommend a 4 gig ram upgrade for this laptop? How much of a difference would CL6 vs CL5 make? Crucial.com has a 4 gig ram kit for $43.99 but it is CL6.
Thanks! -
-
Many people have put this in their laptops, and looking at the specs, I think its really good for the price, and they have free shipping. -
it's a supplement to my review, i didn't want to post it there again, as it didnt give any editing option and I didn't want to alter the recommendation ratio.
products pros:
-- after turning the laptop upside-down a few times(!!!), the whining is almost gone, just a barely hearable and muffled whirling sound ( so i guess it was probably from fan rather than HD), anyway it's much better now, hope it doesn't come back: build quality issues around
-- getting used to tricky touch buttons, finding them handy more often
-- bought and installed Dead Space and Mass Effect, both of them play really smooth configured with medium settings, I tried mass effect with high texture quality and 1366 resolution, it wasn't quite smooth, but playable. playing dota, resolution 1024x768 without aspect ratio scaling (fixed at 4:3 with black bars), the screen size suits and doesn't cause any eye strain.
-- I'm getting obsessive, watching movies and pictures just to admire the display! only one word can describe it: Superb!
-- even after intense gaming, notebook stays exceptionally cool. using default 6-cell battery, bottom doesn't stand totally flat and there's some slope and free space which helps ventilation. the only areas that get warm are around hp logo on back of the display and (only after intense use) area behind the left palm rest; and if you put the remote in the slot, that will get really warm, and as it's winter here, in summer you'll probably find the palm rest noticeably warm and the remote hot. as i mentioned before, fan is quiet and won't bother while gaming.
Products cons:
-- now after almost more than two weeks owning this laptop, I can say that sound quality is average. first I figured out that using players other than WMP, like vlc player, improves sound quality and reduces the distortion greatly, I guess it's either a driver issue, or a sound card problem, rather than just being the speaker fault. moreover, some of the noise comes from notebook parts vibrating, eg. when I exit the dvd drive and hold it firmly, some of those vibrations are gone: not a nice build and sound quality
but again, headphone output is quite good for a laptop. and i guess it'll handle external output just the same, I'll share the result later after testing it with my Roland amp -_-
-- surfaces, including already sticky touchpad, easily get sticky, I mean you really need to either clean your hands before using it, or get used to cleaning the laptop often
-- there's some flex in numpad area, though the rest of the keyboard is rock solid
-- out of the box -norton security, windows gets unresponsive time to time (just while exploring, not during gaming or simple playback): opening new tabs while surfing the web, scrolling through office word documents with images, ... i can't say what's the problem, has anyone else experienced the same issue?
-----would I buy this again? oh, sure! but I'll consider Asus too this time. -
-
Ordered the exact same thing today.
Aloha to you all. -
Yeah, with that kind of savings, I couldn't help but go all out! Can't wait to receive this baby!

Had to call support because I found the coupon early and it worked on a mock spec up and went to buy later and it was not a valid code. They were cool about it. Thanks alot to all who post here. It made buying alot easier. -
Kramer, you bought the setup I almost ended up with, I just decided to go ahead with the T9600 at the last moment. If you don't mind me asking, what did the total end up being for that laptop?
Mine ended at 1598.00 after the 30% off (with CA Tax). -
Mine was 1471.00 with RI tax. Support said I should have it before the 9th of Jan which was actually the build date. Congrats on your system!
-
They said before the build date? Sweet! Glad to hear that!
-
Went out yesterday to try and get a lil hands-on time with that Gateway everyone's so excited about. Didn't find it, but at the local electronics/computer place I stopped at (was @ 2 BB's previously), I found a brand new HP display that had everything from the smallest netbook all the way up to the HDX18's lined up side-by-side.
Any fears I had about the size of the HDX16 were quickly put to rest--the thing was sitting side by side with a dv7z.....and , the dv is a real beast next to the HDX16! (Didn't think there'd be that much of a perceptible difference between a 17" and 16" lappy.....)
Was able to close the lid and pick it up a bit too and was pleasantly surprised by the weight and how easy it was to move around. Will have no qualms about taking this thing with me to class (just need to replace my old Targus backpack now). The display model was also outfitted with the Infinity display as opposed to the dv7 which had the regular BrightView option. As far as glare goes....on the well lit sales floor with the lid in a normal upright position, I didn't have a problem with it, though at home that may change.....(I have a nifty lamp hanging over my desk as you can see in the pic)
Build quality seemed solid...sensed some slight flex near the numpad (like hooman.k), but that's about it. The touchpad felt great....alot more responsive than the one in my old ze4230. As for the whole fingerprint issue....I've got an iPod touch and from what I could see after I was finished messing around, you'd either have to use this beast constantly for a few days or have really dirty hands to get it as scuffed up as the iPod (though again, that was in the store & not here @ home).
With a P8400, 4GB of RAM (am guessing Vista 64bit?) and the 9600M GT, I found the display model got a WEI score of 5.0. I'm guessing my config (P7350, 3GB of RAM, 32bit Vista) will be in the high 4's (anywhere from 4.5 on up)....though I forgot to check the HD (see if it was 5200 or 7200RPM), so that might have some effect on the end score.
In any event, I was pretty impressed and am even more confident in my decision to go with one of these over a dv5t.....now if Jan 31st would hurry up and get here..... -
i've been lurking here after getting mt aunt a dv7t (amd TL-70 processor $650) for christmas i have developed an obsession with these HP laptops.
i was on the fence over the past few weeks over a dv7 or a HDX16 changing my mind each day...i liked the huge HDX screen but i liked the bronze color (a lot) of the dv7 and the dual drive bays. and the HDX screen isn't THAT much larger than the dv7.
well, i bought the HDX16 tonight. doing my part to stimulate the economy!
i decided the real goal was a giant screen (well High Resolution, not so concerned about physical size).
dual drive bays is super cool...but i don't keep anything too important on my windows boxes anyway...
so my configuration:

the funny thing is i'm a Macintosh guy.
make my living from it actually. i have a couple of used 12" PowerBooks (only G4s but they get the job done most of the time) and use intel iMacs for desktops (3 of 'em).
and i really would like to buy a Macintosh laptop but they just lack something...i like the solid metal case of the new Mac Books/Pros...but why can't they put a numeric keypad on the MacBook Pro? there is plenty of room.
or a flash card reader?
or a 1080p HD screen?
or an HDMI port? i watch all my TV off the 17inch iMac hooked to a projector.
or a BluRay drive? (although i do wish HD DVD won)
the keypad and the high resolution screen really sold me, i always was amazed Dell had 1920 x ???? or whatever screens years ago and Apple didn't offer anything close. if they even made a 12 inch MacBook (identical to the tiny 12" G4 of years ago) with a much higher resolution screen i'd go that way. and the HP industrial design is pretty decent.
i still love the Macintosh and OS X etc (not the iPod so much, don't own one, or the iPhone for that matter [$120/month?!?! to get my same $56 sprint plan??] but that's a whole other discussion to bore you with) but this HP laptop seems like it will be fun. the Macintosh would just be another Macintosh without any "fun" elements. without any excitement for lack of a better word.
and i do need a windows machine from time to time and sometimes it's just nice to have it full blown with rebooting my intel macintoshes or using parellels or vmware fusion. my two year old $400 black friday compaq is pretty lame. hopefully this HP will be usable for a longer period of time. i'm hoping i can run OS X on it one of these days...HA!
anyway, thanks for the help...i read this entire post last weekend!
i will refrain from updates on where the laptop in it's journey to me.
