What don't you like about the tuner? Bad quality? Bad software?

Can someone recommend me a good laptop cooler? While I was playing Civ IV I noticed that the GPU temperature reached 97 C (206 F) and the processor reached 83 C. I think that's super high for both. Are these normal temps? I used CPUID Hardware Monitor.

I just ordered the Logitech Z-2300 speakers from HP's Website for $100.39 shipped! :notworthy:

They are 200 watt RMS (120 watts to the Sub) and THX Certified! This is a great deal!

I used my APP Account and Coupon SV2130 which is $10 off any order over $50!!!

This will be a great compliment to my HDX18t which ships next week! :p

Wow thats high, especially for just CIV 4 which is not that much an intensive game. Do a forum search, I remember reading somewhere where they got a cooler for their hdx16 from amazon and it was great.

I believe I know what was causing the heating issue... I had the laptop on top of a mat which was restricting airflow from the bottom but as soon as I slanted the laptop by placing an object underneath the temps never went above 70 C while playing Civ IV.

However, I'll still search for that cooler.

I was shopping for a DV6 or DV7 but now that ive done my taxes its into HDX16 Territory. DV6 makes me nervous as its a newer less proven model though all models have their issues. Blackwave's issue worries me a tiny bit but im thinking one preventative is to not entirely close the screen while the laptop is on, the heat is likely to melt paint to the screen.

So if i may heres my new questions:

1 - Anyone using the 12 cell. Looking at the battery offset the 12 cell seems like it would be awkward?

2 - Those with the tv tuner, reading other threads it seems like im almost as good off with the one i have now because it's digital side doesnt work in media center either. Does your's work digital in media center, does the hp software allow for recording? Anyway to record from alternate sources?

3 - While it seems like the Screen upgrade is popular with money a concern and gaming my intention I think spending 100 on the 130M and stock screen is better than 175 on the screen and being stuck with a card that cant drive FEAR to the max res of the screen with the settings proper.

Whats you all's thoughts on this?

EDIT - I also meant to ask about audio over hdmi, noticed a guy with a DV5 having issues but someone mentioned ATI cards dont have this issue. Do the HDX series with Nvidia have audio output with the hdmi?

The tuner works, but reception is not great. I tried it in Tampa and Miami, both cities have good over the air HD broadcast, whcih i can get on a TV with an HDTV antenna, but not great on the laptop. again, it works as advertised, I just don't find it to be that good of reception.

    1. The 12 cell battery is big. It lifts the back of the laptop up 1 inch. It doesn't look strange to me but it due to the battery, if you set it on your lap, the laptop would be uneven since it doesn't run the entire length of the laptop. Besides this, I like it as it give you a better typing position and cools the laptop because of the clearance when set on a table.

    2. Don't have a tv tuner. But I heard its great to sucks. I guess it depends on where you live and channels you can get etc. Besides picking up TV, you can also run VHS tapes to your computer and change them into digital format or burn to a DVD.

    3. If budget allows I'd recommend the best screen and GPU. However, I'd have to agree with you if you'd have to choose 1. Go for the best GPU cuz you can't upgrade it by yourself later as its soldered to the motherboard. The best screen also makes everything look microscopic but you can change the resolution. Some people hate the midgetism look and other like me like it and got used to it.

Thanks Optimus, Unfortunatly today the BluRay went off sale and its got me looking into the HDX18 all spec'd out with a bluray burner for 1681 and im like while thats not much more then I was paying for the HDX 16.....

I do have a little money to burn and i can save more but with the DV6 now pricing more than the HDX 16 i priced and the HDX 16 up in price. I have to take a step back and look at the 900 Dollar ASUS that has a 9800M GS, Bang for the buck its nice but it does lack the bluetooth, lightscribe, fingerprint reader..... and i started out wanting a coding machine lmao.

Ill check HP in 4 weeks again as prices, deals and configurations change. If i had not convinced myself I needed a gamer i would just grab the HDX 16 in quickship because of its CPU and HDD @ 1099 is a good deal.

Put Windows 7 RC on this badboy and it is screaming! Windows 7 is pretty cool and allows inplace upgrade to the RTM version so I will be testing Windows 7 from her on out. If you guys got any questions on Windows 7 on this thing let me know. All drivers and apps work including BT, TV tuner, fingerprint reader etc and I am running the 64bit version! Pretty sweet.

Less than 3 hours on balanced performance. Almost 4 hours on power save mode with screen set on level 1 brightness and backlite keyboard off.

Yeah its a pretty powerful laptop is why. It also depends on your configuration, cpu, gpu, hdd, etc. I knew the battery life would suck so thats why I got both batteries. The 6 cell lasts for 2 and a half hours on powersave and 2 hours on balanced.

Do you recommend this machine for me going into a University in the fall?

I want to use the 30% off code and the 10% education discount. Will the 30% off coupon last for like another week? And how can I tell if the 10% edu discount works with this?

    Thanks.

There's usually a limit on how many times the 30% coupon is used before it expires. As for the 10% stacks or not, just pretend you're buying it now and go to checkout. You can enter the coupons there and see if they do work or not.

Yes I recommend it. I'm pretty sure you can only use 1 discount, I tried. It will take the bigger one.

    Use code NB6528 to save 30% off certain $999.00+ HP notebooks. (valid 4/13/2009 12:00:00 AM - 4/20/2009 11:59:59 PM)

To see if it works, pretend you are buying it now. Add it to cart, then type your name, address etc. Then checkout you will have a box to put the coupon.

I know for a fact you can't use the APP w/ the other coupons.

Also, customize and see which is better for you, they have the $500, $400, and 30% off going right now!

I am pretty sure the APP is around $100 off.

i reinstalled with vista ulitmate and ran all the drivers from teh hp site. I have one device which is not installed, says it can't find the driver, but no idea what it is. everything seems to be working, but not sure what else I can do to find out what it is detecting. device manager says:
This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

    hardware IDs: ACPI/HPQ0004

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

any idea how I can figure out what this is?

Is it me or does the left side of the wrist rest get hot? the remote in the slot also gets really hot. The average temp seems to be 38-46 C. Its like 81 when playing a game or so. Im just worried if this heat can ruin the express slot remote. and does anyone else feel the warmth from the left side?

Yeah it get warm on mine too but not hot. You can tell a difference between the left and right side tho. But I didn't play any games on it yet. I've never thought about the heat messing up the remote. Just don't keep the remote in there I guess.

    Hi guys,
does anyone know if our HP HDX 16 is affected by the defective NVIDIA GPUs. I am talking about the NVIDIA 9600M GT here. HP is offering a free extended warranty for affected laptops. I checked their website and the HDX series was NOT one of the affected models. But i read somewhere else that not all affected laptops are listed on the HP website.

On another note, what in your experience is a normal idle temp for the 9600M GT GPU. Mine is around 44 to 46 C. By comparison the CPU (intel core2 duo P8700) is much lower around 33 to 36 C. Would appreciate any input from you guys.

I could be wrong but I think the HDX16 is not covered. It is too new. I have yet to hear anyone here having the nvidia issue on it. Mine came with the 130M gpu, which is even hotter. I would suggest a good cooling pad.

So I just received this notebook today. Everything looks spiffy. I wanted to do a clean reinstall of Vista, but there's no recovery disc. The HP tech told me there is no way aside from getting another copy of Vista, which I have but the question is: Will formatting the hard drive and recovery partition prevent me from returning it later if needed?

Would getting the 130M shorten battery life when just doing normal things. I know it will run hotter, but would it be noticeably hotter? Maybe stick with 9600... I don't know... Seeing some of the comments in here I think I will have to get a 1 year warranty with this computer. Or does this computer come with a warranty already. I don't think mine will ever get damaged or spills on it. That would save $100.

You can make your own recovery disc. I don't know how cuz I didn't do mine yet and too lazy but I'm sure you can do it. Google search it, "how to make a vista recovery disc". Yes, HP will take it back even if you reformat.

I'm not sure if the 130M will shorten battery life because both of them use 23watts of power. If this is true, then power consumption should be the same. Look here for both of their specs:

    130m
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-130M.13789.0.html

    9600m
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9600M-GT.9449.0.html

Your laptop will come standard with 1 year warranty for defects etc, but not for accidental stuff. I personally would not get it cuz you'd have to be an idiot or really careless to spill soda or drop it etc.

If you bought a customized one, about 10 days or more. If you got a preconfigured one, about a week, assuming you selected free shipping which is slowest.

hey, i'm definitely looking into this laptop... i love everything about it, except for maybe the battery life. anyway, i was wondering if anyone has a clue or tip as to when this line might be updated? because i know this was introduced in sept 08... but i'm going to college in the fall and i was wondering how long i should wait it out.

It was updated about a month ago with backlit keyboard option and a better graphics card the 130M. Therefore, there won't be any more updates soon I believe.
