The HDX18 is hugeeeee. However, its great as a desktop replacement if you don't take it anywhere. If you take it to class, tooo big.

The HDX16 is only 1-2 inches wider than a regular 15.4" screen laptop. I compared it side by side next to my toshiba. The screen is 1 inch shorter but 2 inches wider, hence 16x9 wide screen.

Also the HDX16 doesn't come with 12cell battery. Only 6 and/or 9. 9 will last 3.5 hours on balanced power mode.

I'd get the 130m card for it. Its plenty powerful IMO.

All I can say is I love this laptop. I initially bought the 1366x768 resolution version but I'm now getting the 1920x1080. I felt the screen vertically did not give me the room I'm used to (compared to my 20'' desktop monitor at 1680x1050) so I decided to exchange it. I'm in the process of sending the laptop and receiving the new one. The new laptop will come additionally with HD TV Tuner and Blu-Ray ROM which the previous one didn't have.

If there's anything that I have to comment in terms of dislikes it has to be the multimedia keys. As some have mentioned, controlling the volume, bass or treble has a sluggish feel to it. There seems to be some sort of lag upon making contact and receiving feedback. Apart from that the last gripe I might have is the speaker sound. From time to time the sound would crackle. However, some have mentioned this is corrected by uninstalling the current sound drivers and using the OS drivers. I didn't try this since this issue doesn't truly bother me.

Overall I'm very impressed. This is my first laptop and I like it a lot. This will soon become the desktop replacement that is intended to be. Now I'm in the market for an eSATA drive that I can use for backup and video editing. I might buy a notebook cooler as well to increase the lifetime of the laptop.

One more thing, I also bought the HP Executive Bag and the HP Bluetooth Mouse HDX Version. The bag is perfect for the laptop. Great fit. The Mouse however seems to be defective as it stopped working and being recognized by the laptop the 2nd day of use. I received the replacement mouse today (haven't opened it yet) and HP is not even interested on receiving the defective mouse. Now I have two mice :). Who knows, it might not be defective after all. Also, the laptop works great under Linux (used Ubuntu)! Even the Bluetooth was recognized out of the box. You truly can't go wrong with this puppy.

    Hi there!

    I'm from Argentina.

I've been reading all messages from this thread and I've learned a lot.
    Thanks you guys.

But my doubt is... Should I go for the Full HD screen (1920x1080) or the other one (1366x768)?

First of all, HP Argentina doesn't sell any of the HDX models. Well in fact, they now have the HDX18t, but it's too big for me. So I can't go to any store and see it (The hdx16t) by myself.

I know that if I buy the 720p model and I don't like all that big icons and texts I wouldn't be able to go up with the resolution. Instead with the 1080p I could do the other way around, I mean going down.
    1920x1080 -> 1600x900 -> 1366x768

Of course it isn't going to be really sharp, but at least usable. So if I want to watch a bluray movie or do some video editing with my canon hv20 I can switch to full resolution, and then for surfing the net switching again.

What I'm asking for is if someone that have bought the 1920x1080 can upload some pics doing the switching. For example, viewing this forum at different resolution (without changing the font size in Windows or the zoom in the browser) to see how sharp it is.

    Thanks!

Today I'm supposed to receive the 1080p model. That means that I will have both the 720p and 1080p tonight to compare. I plan on taking pictures and/or videos and posting it so that you can get an idea of the differences. I'll keep everyone posted.

I have the 1080p with no regrets. Although your desktop and webpages look microscopic, you soon get used to it and yes you can decrease the resolution.

I have a post going on about a laptop bag maybe you guys can help me out since a lot of you have the same laptop. There are a couple other options I am looking at in the thread.

Would the Skooba Satchel 2.0 make a good ballistic nylon laptop bag?

Do this: Starting from either side of the touch panel, push your finger down and slowly rub along the entire touch control panel. Preferably do this while it's off. Anyways, it should be fine then. I heard it has something to do with static electricity.

As promised, I uploaded some clips with the two laptops side by side. The clips give you an idea of the resolution for both models. 720p is on the left and 1080p on the right. Below is the link:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/13888314@N04/sets/72157617190647011/

I have to say, I need to get used to the 1080p model but so far I'm not regretting the change. Btw, my recording skills are not that good so take it easy on me :D.

    Thanks seelk!
I almost sure the 720p is best for me. The 1080p is too small, I'd need a kind of magnifying glass to see that thing.

Seelk, can you post some stills from de 1080p decreasing the resolution from 1920x1080 -> 1600x900 -> 1366x768? Because at native resolution it'll be all perfect and sharp, but switching down I imagine it'll not be the same. I want to confirm if it's that bad in order to decide what I'm going to buy.

If you do it with the print screen key I'll go to USA in person to thanks you. :D

Unfortunately - and it's a new gripe I have with the 1080p model - you are unable to decrease the resolution to anything but 1360x768 from 1920x1080. You can only do 1920x1080 -> 1360x768 -> 1280x1024, etc. I'm not sure why the user can't select anything in between but it might be due to the nature of HD 1080p -> 720p. Either way, I was also planning on using a lower resolution than 1080p for those times I'm not watching a blu-ray. At least I have the 720p model 4 additional days in case I change my mind to exchange. If in the next few days I can not adjust to 1080p resolution I will not exchange and will send the 1080p back.

I uploaded three photos showing 1080p and 1360x768 screenshots: http://www.flickr.com/photos/13888314@N04/sets/72157617190647011/.

I know I'm just a bit demanding, but could you upload the pics at real resolution. They are 500x282 and when I zoom-in to see how sharp the text is it gets all distorted. I don't know if it's a Flickr restriction or what.

I feel that after all I'm asking you to do I'll have to send you a present or something else. When is your birthday? :D

There should be a button that says All Sizes. Press that button while viewing a picture and it should give you the native option. Please let me know if that doesn't work.

I'm glad to help since I know how hard it is when making a decision on a big investment. I went through the same thing (and still am) you're going through right now before I made the purchase. As you can see I'm still researching which option is best for me. BTW, my birthday is on Halloween :)...

Thank you, I found it! It's obvious I don't know how to use Flickr interface. :p

Another thing that is obvious is that now LCD screens manage a lot better lower resolutions. I can't see almost any distortion in the image.

After seen this, I'll go for the 1080p for sure. I'm just waiting for a 25/30% coupon.
    Come on HP, release it!

The glorious day it gets into my hands I'll post my spects and write a little review.

    Thanks you all!

To be honest I don't think the screenshots depict the true story. While you can't see degradation from the 1360x768 screens, the view is not as sharp as the 1080p resolution and it's very noticeable. I guess I'll need to take still shots from my camera so you can see what I mean...

    Don't, don't say that :( ... I was so excited about 1080p downgrading to 720p.

OK, I'll wait your stills shots to see what you mean. But... ¿Is it that bad to surf the net or doing common things? You make me doubt again; and I appreciate it. I don't want to regret my purchase. Thanks.

Actually, after comparing it is not worth posting the pictures as the camera does not pick up the subtle differences. Now that I take a good look at it, the only difference between both models at a 720p resolution is that one is a little sharper and the other is smoother. This does not truly affect web browsing or word processing that much. If you will be constantly switching between resolutions than maybe you you need to rethink which one you truly need.

I guess the question is, if you're buying the 1080p model for 720p viewing than I recommend you get the 720p instead. If you plan on taking full advantage of 1080p (blu-ray, photo/video editing, etc) than definitely get the 1080p. Honestly the more I get used to 1080p the more I like it. I truly like the ability to watch blu-ray movies at their native resolution as well as watching my HD recorded clips at 1080p.

Quick question, what would be a normal GPU and Core 0/1 temp for this computer when just using it for the internet, writing papers ect? I am using speedfan right now so I don't know what would be considered the range for overheating as far as this laptop goes. Thanks.

All I can say is that the 1080p looks really sharp and clear, although microscopic. But one does get used to it and over time, I prefer it. When I lowered the resolution, my desktop, webpages etc got bigger but the looked duller so I just keep mines in full resolution. I'd recommend the 1080p.

I was thinking why you said that the stills taken with the print screen key where different from what you see in your screen when you go from 1080p to 720p. To explain it the easy way, with the print screen you get what Windows and your video card can do, not what your LCD screen really shows. I'm right?

I'm thinking in buying the 1080p for viewing blu-ray and video editing. But I'm not sure if it'll be to small for other tasks, like reading documents or surfing the net. I don't want to force my eyes with the tiny fonts, that's why I'm so worried about using the 720p resolution.

The other option is to get the 720p and buy a 24" FULL HD monitor for video editing.

My problem is that here in Argentina there aren't any notebooks 16" 1080p to see in stores.

Hi: Has anybody experienced a random plopping sound from the speakers when the notebook is used with the battery only? I'm not running any programs and volume is not high, but the speakers will plop now and then. It goes away when I mute or when I plug in the powercord.

I received my HP-HDX16t on Friday 4/23 and it has the exact same problems identified by another user on these forums .
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4783996#post4783996

There are couple of humps on the touch sensitive media buttons and the silver rim is not fully flushed around the LED lights for HD, Power and Battery on left corner.

In addition looses the connectivity to wireless very often when on battery. This seems to be an issue with some parts in month of April. Going to exchange it or should i return it..is this a common occurring problem ?

Have others faced this...need some help as looking to go to Sony CS or FW series....

I just got mine on Friday (4/24), and it crashed on me over the weekend. Windows wouldn't even load in safe mode. It took me a while, but I was able to do a complete system recovery. So yea, I'd say I had a pretty big problem.

My question is, should I return the laptop just in case if this was a hardware issue? (Full disclosure: in my excitement of getting a new laptop, I went a bit overboard in torrenting/downloading software/transferring stuff from my external - but I'm 99% sure that everything I was putting on there was safe). It seems to be working fine now, but I don't want this to happen to me again 2 weeks from now when I can no longer exchange it at Microcenter. Any advice/suggestions would be great.

    Thanks,
    neyvit

I was told that my build date was the 5th. I received an e-mail on Saturday at 9:30 AM that said it shipped. The e-mail gave me a tracking number and I kept checking it and there was nothing found. I checked it earlier today and have updates. It is now in Alaska so you should have something by the morning time.

I have already sent it back for exchange, i am hoping it was not due to hot screen (ultra bright view) being closed on the cheap plastic silver touch sensitive buttons that did it. We will see on the new one what happens. I still think lot of functionality for the price. Wish could be less plastic and made it a little more solid...

Just remember that the tracking number is not always 100% accurate. If in doubt, just call fedex.

Thank you sir, that makes it more reassuring for me when I carry mine around. Mine is shipping out right now :)

Bad part is its going to be finals week and I need to study, not play around with this laptop. If it didn't take a month I would return it and get it in 2 weeks when finals are over ha ha.

Side note, isn't HP offering a new casing on purchase in a couple weeks or something. I was tired when reading about it online ill have to find article again to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

    Hello there!

I'm looking for someone who has a backup of the original MBR of his/her HP HDX 16 - 1060 model (320gb Hardrive) made with the EasyBCD program.

The reason I'm looking for this is that because of installing XP and playing with partitions and boot options my recovery partition is not recognized anymore by HP software and it doesn't boot up when pressing the F11 button on startup. Vista boots instead. However, the recovery partition is still there because I tried setting it as the active partition and it functioned flawlessly. Made the complete recovery but it doesn't affect the MBR.

So I'd very much appreciate if someone can provide me with the backup of original MBR of their laptop (not altered). If someone has it already or is willing to take 15 min to make a backup you could send it to my email address or upload it to rapidshare or a similar website.

    Thank you very much!
