I'd suggest being patient and wait for the 30% off coupon. I've followed them since Feb. and there is one about every month. According to my research, the next one is due mid. June. It saved me $1000 off my maxed spec'd system. However, you'd have to spend $1000 or more.

Thanks for the advice. I don't plan on maxing out the system, coupon or no, but I do plan on putting enough into it where the 30% will be over $500.

    Quick question...

Does the Mediasmart software work without booting up the laptop? (Like Asus 'Express Gate' software)

alright so optimustazran has swayed me into canceling my HDX and waiting for the 30% coupon. I called them up and they said they might be able to cancel it and if not i would just have to return it upon arrival. I did all the math out and i will be getting the 2.93 processor, backlit keyboard, and the Geforce 1gb 130M for the same price of around 1300$ before tax. i only would lose the blue ray but it doesnt really bother me all that much. now all i gota do is wait..........

Will upgrading the memory, hdd, or processor by myself void the warranty?

    Thanks.

No, the hdx16 uses DDR2. However, there is not a noticeable performance gain between ddr2 and ddr3.

Yeah. I ordered my 1st one with a 25% coupon and then 2 days later they had the 30% coupon and it would have saved me $150 more. But they didn't allow me to cancel so I waited for it to get here and returned it. Then ordered another one plus tv tuner and 2 year warranty for about $200 cheaper than the 1st one.

yea the jerks arent letting me cancel either lol. so im going to return it and hopefully it all goes well and a 30% coupon comes out by august. When i do reorder tho should I get the 2.66 processor instead of the 2.93 so that i can get the 1080p screen and the blue-ray player? im in a price range so I would not be able to get both. i heard the 1080P screen makes the icons look small though. any suggestions/opinions?

I posted a few clips and screenshots of the 1080p vs 720p laptops. Hopefully it gives you an idea of the different resolutions.

In regards of the processor, I'm not sure you'll see a huge difference between 2.66 and 2.93 (~270mhz difference).

Just ordered one of these, my first laptop, and I'm pretty excited for it's arrival. I've been building desktops for a long time now, but choosing something as un-upgradeable as a laptop was really tough. I needed something that had enough battery life to last me through long classes, but at the same time serve as a desktop replacement. The HDX 16t seems like the ultimate laptop for my needs. My setup is as follows:

    C2D T9800
    4 GB RAM
    320 GB 5400 Hard Drive
    Nvidia GeForce GT 130M
    1080p screen
Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    TV Tuner
    Backlit Keyboard
    12 Cell Battery

To appease the modder in me I'm going to put a Seagate 500 GB 7200 drive and eventually, depending on how fast it is, put 8 GB of Corsair in.

For the people that have maxed out HDX 16's, what would the battery life be for something like this? I'm only going to be taking notes with it during class, occasionally using the internet when nothing important is being said.

yea i see that everything is smaller on the 1080p which would mean that more can fit on the screen. i guess this would be a plus as well as the better picture. it seems that everyone here has gone with the 1080p so i think ill go with it as well. thanks seelk, ive been looking for something like that for a while. any other opinions on screen resolutions or processors?

Hello, I have been facing a problem with taking pics and printscreen
    pics.

    Problem 1:
I know how to do printscreen trick on laptop.
    My nick name makes sence.
I have like all other here an HDX16t laptop.
I want to take screens when playing Burnout Paradise Ultimate Box
    with the Prinscreen.
After pressed Fn+PrintScrn, alt+tabbed the game, opened MS Paint
    and pasted.
All what MS Paint gives, is a black screen.
No ingame screen, only a fully black screen.

    Problem 2
Fraps is the most used benchmarking program.
So I changed my mind to install the Fraps.
I registred it and tried to use it.
When driving ingame, I want to press "Take screen" button.
After that, the game will crash immediatley.
No errors or msg with "Burnout has been stopped working"
    Only closed.
    I couldn't save screens.
Could anyone tell me how to fix it or help me?

My laptop specs are with the same when no adding optional stuff.

    P8400 2.26GHz 3MB L2
    9600M GT 512MB DDR2
    Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bit
    4GB RAM
    320GB

Do you guys know how much a T series processor drains the battery life compared to a P series?

Also, I've heard that Intel will be (if they haven't already) releasing a new set of processors. Will the HDX16 be adopting any of these?

The other comments I have in terms of resolution is that with the 1080p version you can only change the resolution to 1360x768 from 1920x1080. I thought there would be more in-between options. Also, it will take time for you to get used to which will have a higher strain on your eyes. Apart from that I like 1080p more than 720p simply due to the realstate and that you can watch Blu-Ray natively.

In terms of processors, I have the P8700 2.53ghz and no complaints. Some users have the 2.00ghz and they're fine as well. My point is, you can save a lot of money with little performance loss. But if you can afford top of the line go for it. You won't regret it.

Congrats on your order. It seems you've got the best processor and gpu. You could always upgrade the ram and hdd by yourself later.

My specs are maxed out except the blu-ray burner. I have both batteries but with the 12 cell it usually lasts about 2:30 hours just internet browsing. It could last longer if you disable bluetooth and wireless I've heard. This is average considering the processing power.

The P series uses 25w, vs. the T at 35w. The next fastest processor up is the T9900 @ 3.06 GHz but its not on the hdx16. However, I've heard that intel is coming out with faster P processors that use 25ws. If this is true, I don't know when HP will implement them.

Ive decided that i wont be getting the blue ray player becuase i dont think i would get 150$ worth of use out of it. becuase im not using the blue ray theres not all that much point for the 1080p and im also thinking everything would be to small on the screen. so i think im going to go with the 720p with the 2.93 processor. but im still debating it

Do you think the 1080p screen is sucking a lot of power? And what's this with 1080p screens having small text. I never noticed the text being small. Also, have you noticed any dust under your screen?

I don't know about the screen sucking alot of power, I always have power outlets around when I use any of my computers. As far as dust under the screen, I don't have any problems with any of my computers. I really don't see how dust can get under the screen. And I love the screens on my HDX 16 and HDX 18. The text does not seem small to me, and I love the extra "real estate" of the screens on these units.

I don't know about it draining more power but I don't think so. The text is small because the 1080p has a higher resolution, which by nature makes everything look smaller but sharper. I have not had the dust issue yet for 1 month. But I've also heard that if you get dust in there, it comes from inside the screen and not outside.

Hopefully soon; construction of commissioned Sager np8662s is being postponed until the new processors come in. I know the HDX16 has seen changes in its processor line before. Does anyone know the timing of those changes? Were they in line with the release of new processors from Intel?

Relating back to the P/T series question, I was aware of the difference in power requirements. However, I do not know how this difference effects battery life in terms of time. I am positive its is shorter, but is by five minutes? Fifty minutes? That is what I want to know. I understand that no single person may know the answer.

Edit: Is the processor on this machine upgradeable?

I'm getting a factory replacement for my 5 time repaired dv5t and need to make this one as equitable as possible to get it approved.

Does anyone have better pics of the keyboard layouts etc ?

There is a 30% off coupon that comes once a month. The next one is around June 15th. Do a google search for "hp coupons". For pics of mine, look here:

Once again, it depends not soley on the processor but hard drive, gpu, etc. The battery drain is diffidently faster for a T series cpu compared to a P, but I don't know how much. You can't tell unless you have 2 hdx16s, one with P and one with T, set side by side.

Don't worry your head off, its not that much difference I would think.

And, no the CPU is not upgradeable so I've read.

Xang0 can you tell me where you got the default sound driver for windows 7? I have the same problem you had and each time I uninstall the IDT driver it reverts back to the IDT driver instead of a default windows 7 driver.

Hey everyone I am currently waiting for my HDX16 to arrive and had a few basic questions about the system. I ordered it on may 30th (last day of the memorial day sale) for $1355 including tax.

    The specs are:
-Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    -Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T6600 (2.2GHz)
-FREE Upgrade to 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
-FREE Upgrade to 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1366x768)
    - Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    - Fingerprint Reader
    - Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    - HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
    - Full Size Backlit Keyboard
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
    - 1-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Pick Up and Return

I was just hoping to get other peoples' opinions on these specs and was wondering if i should prepare for any problems. Are most of these systems turning out problem free or is there a recurring defect that I should be aware of? Also how good will these specs get me through the latest games? Are these specs right for the price or did i make a bad deal? I am sort of regretting not getting the Ultra Bright display and a P series CPU. Any feedback would be appreciated, i am just being sort of paranoid and wanted comments from other HDX owners lol.

    Thanks!
    -Matthew :)

I also bought an HDX 16t during the memorial day sale and I called them back 3 days later to cancel becuase I want to wait for the 30% off coupon that usually comes once a month. They are still "trying" to cancel it so if they end up not canceling it they will ship it to me and then I am going to return it. the 30% coupon will allow me to further upgrade the system and still spend less than i would have without the coupon. as for you questions

For gaming this laptop will do good if you have at least the T9550 2.66 ghz 6mb cache processer and the 1Gb Geforce 130m. The 9600m gt is still a good card tho. As long as you are not playing crysis, i dont think you will run into any issues enjoying the games you play.

As far as the price you paid.... the 30% off coupon would have helped tremendously.

How well is the HDX16t in regards to portability?

And also, what is the difference between the 512MB NVidia 9600 and the 1GB 130M? How much of a difference can I expect with gaming?

I'll wait for the 30% off coupon for this model, maybe willing to spend up to $1300 including tax. I would like to include the following:

    • 12 Cell
    • Blu Ray
    • 1080p for Blu Ray and HD Movies

If anyone can offer suggestions that would be nice. I like the HDX 16t because of its design (I prefer it over the new Espresso Black and Moonlight White), and its port selection (4USB and FW). Thanks.

    320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive

And this is without blu ray right? And you deducted the 30% from the rebated not the original. The actual 30% discount is reflected off the original price (in your case, $1900).

I've read on here that the gpu is not upgradeable since it is soldered to the motherboard. That is why I got the best one. The 130m is simply an updated 9600m, with smaller circuit die and 512 more ram. Its about 17% faster.

I can play crysis warhead on it oh high settings no problems.

I know it sucks. I'm torn between getting high graphics with the HDX 16t over a smaller machine that is a bit cheaper.

I really don't carry mine around, it just stays home. But if you've ever used a 15.4 inch laptop, then its about the same. I'm comparing it to my toshiba, which is almost the same size as the hdx16, but lighter. I would say, its has big as possible without being non portable.

hmm i see the price for the HDX16 has dropped to 899 now...i guess i shouldnt have tried to take advantage of the memorial day sale. I'm starting to think 1355 for my specs is a ripoff :(.

Im typeing this on my new HDX 16t right now. This computer is awesome although i am returning this one to wait for the 30% coupon for the better graphics, 2.66 processor, and backlit keyboard for the same price. the 720 P screen is awesome and i can make my desktop icons smaller due to vista so that not an issue like i thought it would be. I like the look, its speed. almost everything about it. its vista base score got a 5.0 with decent specs. ( the 9600m gt kept it at the 5.0). the only thing negative i have to say is that it does have a little keyboard flex wen using the full number pad but it really isnt as bad as some ppl say. overall a great laptop and im glad i choose this one.

I look for the same answer for HDX18t (same keyboard as hdx16t)

I found one place which sell those, but no backlit

    wow, thanks.
    good to know.

it's $50 option on the HP site so it seems it'd be around $200...that seems like a LOT to pay!

I heard regular keyboard you can buy now for $80 but sure thing backlit will be around $150~200.
I don't want to return my laptop just for that so If price is right, I will get it and replace myself.
