I decided to cancel the order and save up for a hdx18t since I hardly ever bring my laptop outside the house.

Well I am not certain since the hdx16t is way to much money. *sigh I really don't know if 16 inches is good for gaming or video editing cause at best buy it looked very small compared to the 17 inch

Well the 18" screen is awesome for gaming and video editing, if you're going to do a lot of that.

I love the HDX18, and my last laptop was a HP Pavillion DV6640US (POS Motherboard!) and it had a 15.4 screen. It really didn't take that much for me to get used to, it only weighs about a pound or so more than the HDX16, and most of the size is in length. It's very WIDE.

Either one is great if you ask me, but if you are moving it around a lot and want to do games and editing, might wanna consider the HDX18.

    Just my $0.02.

yeah thanks :D. I decided (finally) to go with the hdx18t. It will take me around 2 months to save up for it but I am sure it will be worth it

Anyone know whether or not it voids the warranty to swap the GPU in the HDX 16t, if it is even physically possible? Beyond that, I have a slightly more technical question:

If I were to upgrade the gpu, am I limited to 23 watt cards like the 130m it comes with, or would a 28 or even a 38 watt card be doable (eg the Geforce GT 250m or GTS 260m)? I know the higher consumption will reduce battery length and increase temperatures, but as long as the laptop runs, I need the extra performance! :)

Edit: After some research im finding its pretty much impossible to upgrade laptop GPUs. In that case, any word on if/when the HDX 16 will be sold with a decent gpu?

    optimustarzan,

That was a very nice picture you posted of your backlit keyboard!!
It looks (in your picture) like your keyboard color is black....

When I spoke to someone at HP they said they've
only seen one, & it was silver-gray....

So, what color is your backlit keyboard??
    Black? or silver-gray?

    Thanks!!

hello everyone, I've been reading your comments about the HDX16 for some time now as I was keen to get one for myself here in the UK. My first attempt didn't work out too well (got the 1275ea model) which was ok but had a scratch on the screen so I returned it. After this I was a bit undecided about getting it again so held off for a while and now I see that the UK website has a nice shiny new version out (the 1315ea http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3806904-3806906-3806906-3945005-3976040.html)
This costs more than the original one I wanted (from £1099 to £1299) but it sounds like just what I was after in the first place.
My only problem now is that HP aren't selling it themselves yet and I can't find any other retailer that is offering this model :( has anyone any idea how long it'll be before HP themselves start to offer their own laptops for sale in the UK?? I really want to get one asap!

Thanks and hopefully when I do eventually get one I can come back here for advice from you guys :)

That was an obvious typo, don't you think? :)

And you then repeated my exact idea - it depends on how you configure it. But is there gonna be any better deal in your opinion??

    Thanks

The 130M is a decent gpu. Its considered a class 2 but it runs every game I throw at it including crysis warhead on high settings.

$500 off is a pretty good deal and one of the best I've seen. That is good if your not going to spend alot on it. With the 30% off, the more you spend, the more you save. So it depends on how much you want to spend.

    hi guys,

does anyone experience AC adapter overheating and fan running continuously after playing 4 hours straight of pretty graphic intensive gaming?

i called HP and they said to shut it down and let it cool, the rep. also said HDX16 is built for high-end gaming but he does not recommend leaving the computer on 24/7...sounds like bs to me.

Interesting. I think that my HDX18's (I know that you have the HDX16) fan is set to always be on. It's in the BIOS settings. Matter-of-fact, I believe that it was set NOT to be always on, but an update to the BIOS set it to Always On.

I've never had my AC Adapter get too hot though. Now, I haven't played 4 strait hours of Gaming. Maybe 1 or 2. But my AC never gets hot. I will say that my old HP Pavillion's AC got smoking hot, and then the mobo died.

As far as leaving the Computer on 24/7. I do.

Hell, it's electronics. It's the ON/OFF that kills them in the long run. Hell, it's been said that electronics could last forever if they were never turned off. Food for thought.

Also, what do you mean exactly by 'overheating'?

when i said "overheating", i meant the adapter is scorching hot, i was afraid it's going to catch fire so i turned the HDX off to let it cool.

also, i noticed that the adapter got so hot that it wasn't working, how do i know that? because in the middle of my intensive gaming, the computer just shut down becasue it ran out of juice but i had the ac adapter connected??? my outlet was working fine, as a matter of fact, after i let the ac adapter cool down (HDX off), i plug into the same outlet and it was charging again. (happened two times already)

This moring i just let my computer on, no gaming, the adapter is just warm.

My conclusion is that when i play games for several hr straight, the adapter gets hot, stops working. That's just BS. Didn't HP said this is built for high-end gaming?

Time to call HP for an replacement?

So call. Your adapter gets so hot it stops working and you're asking us if you should call? What do you need our approval for? It's a high-end machine...if you're not happy about something then by all means give HP a call. Even if it was a low-end machine...that shouldn't happen.

that happened to me too, but i had an acer R.I.P. it gets really hot and then switches it itself off every power adapter does that to stop itself from melting at a certain temperature after heavy strained use, basically its normal just let it cool down next to the window or fan it, but if it happens regularly it might switch itself off randomly and stop working, so dont let it overheat to often.

My adapter does get hot to the touch but not super hot to where it might set something on fire. But then again I don't play 4 hours straight of games. Call up HP.

Hey guys, i'm looking at purchasing the HP HDX 16-1140US.

Specs listed are... 2.4ghz processor, 4gigs of DDR2, 500 gig harddrive (5400rpm) 9600m GT GPU.

I could overclock the CPU to at least 2.5ghz right and the GPU to near around the Clock of the GT 160m right?

Which games are you looking at playing? If you go on notebookcheck.com there is a benchmark table comparing these two cards. The difference is not very vast. If anything the GT 130M takes the cake in 3dMark06 but not by a huge amount, i think its somewhere around 600 marks. But in 3dmark03-04 tests...the 9600M GT takes the cake but not by much again. They are pretty comparable cards. Just depends what games you are lookin at running.

the difference between Graphics Cards is not very vast
but how about the cpus . are they comparable too or not?
I mean if i choose 1370us , is it's cpu strong enough for playing games like GTA iv ?

generally, which one is better for gaming, considering that first one has better cpu but weaker gpu , and second has weaker cpu and better gpu??

It's apples and oranges, varies by game. Your best off configuing one yourself like i did, and using the additional $250 coupon off I posted earlier.

I bought the 1370-us, it comes today but i am sending it back because i wanted a couple other things like blue ray dvdrw.

All 16 inch screens and above come with remote, it isnt anything special with those 2 models. If they have a remote, they have the receiver.

have you tried visiting the hp website?

There is something I've been wondering, and hopefully you guys with the faster processor (2.53ghz), Faster Hard Drive (7200rpm) and also you guys with the GT 130M, whats the battery life like. I know the 2-3 hours was set but it was all default settings. It had the slower processor, less GPU, slower hard drive. So what is ya'lls experience with the bigger ones?

Okay, just tested it and the Remote that comes w/ all HDX's works for PowerPoint. :)

You can use the scroll wheel.

My specs are maxed out. I have both batteries. The 6cell lasts less than 2 hours and the 12 cell, less than 3 hours. However, I always have mine set on powersave mode. When I game, the time is usually cut in half.

Ouch on the battery life, although my G1S wasn't much better. 2 hours was about the most i could pull out of it. Good thing i'm usually at a desk anyway.
