Can transporting this laptop when it's in sleep mode do some damage?

IMO- I'd shutdown anytime I put a lappy in a bag.

Sleep mode still uses battery life (maybe 1%) and I try and conserve as much battery life as I can when transporting.

If you have Vista I believe if It's in sleep mode for a certain period of time it'll save the open docs then shut down.
I don't know about you but I don't want anything turning on or off or shutting down in my bag.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post my problem but I'll give it a try anyways =P

I have had my HDX16 since April, but lately it has been acting strange. The media bar at the top (play, stop, wireless and volume control etc) has been adjusting itself on its own. Whenever I adjust the volume manually a box appears on the screen and it shows the current volume, treble and bass. My problem is that sometimes I'm in the middle of a game or something, and the volume begins to adjust by itself, the wireless also turns itself on/off randomly. Any ideas? Thanks :)

I have a question for you owners about the screen. Im almost ready to get the Dell with RGB LED, but this HP keeps interesting me.

Does anyone have any regret buying the HP after seeing Dell's screen?

FWIW: I am in Africa and there is no way for me to look in person.

Your laptop is the same age as mine. I have no issues like yours. I suggest you update the bios and drivers.

I'm not totally sure about the on/off and adjusting by its self stuff. It may be caused by maybe some option for the controls, I'm not totally sure though. The media controls are tricky, I am wondering if you do not have the drivers, will they still adjust the volume and such and just not show the stuff on the screen. Only way to know that is to try it I guess.

Quick question, gonna buy a HDX16 from staples soon but it doesn't come with a backlit keyboard. Is there any way I could order the keyboard and install it myself?

Dohh! Order it from HP.com with the 30% off coupon and save yourself some $.

You may actually be able to replace the keyboard. I am not totally sure but more experienced users on the forums probably will.

I fooled around with the Media controls on the HDX16t today and they are pretty nice. I uninstalled HP Media Controls and the IDT Software and they still worked fine, just didn't actually show the volume on the screen. Only wierd thing is that the base seems to make a click sound, I think it is going on and off when I navigate through sound settings. It only does this when the media control selection is ON base, not treble. So i guess its not a big deal...it clicks when ya turn the PC on, then again when ya turn it off. I did notice though that HP installed a TON of software on it but that doesn't bother me because I am going to reinstall anyways. I think I had 6 different programs that played a DVD at least.

Also... I tested COD4 on the thing. Around the net, benchmarks are showing 20-30fps on high settings at 1024x768 (Around There). I got the newest drivers and here is what I got...

1280x800 - Highest except about 2 settings that make no difference anyways. - no AA - no AF
----- Lowest = 28fps (and this is THE lowest and I only saw it for a second maybe once or twice in big open areas with a lot going on.) ---- Average = 38-45fps (It stuck around here a lot) --- High = 70fps (was what i set to maxfps in the game)

So for COD4 here is my conclusion for anyone curious about the HDX16t gaming performance

    Below 35fps = 8% of time
    35 - 45fps = 70%
    45 -70fps = 22%

So there ya have it...if you are wondering about the Media controls or the gaming performance that how my machine did.

hi, i just got this laptop about 2 weeks ago (July 23).

I reformatted the hard drive and installed Win 7 64-bit (RC 7100) as soon as i received this notebook.

Everything installed flawlessly. Drivers, almost all software I've tried so far... Just like any computer running 7, there are certain programs & apps that have compatibility issues and you are usually alerted to that before the program attempts to run. A couple things I have gotten the compatibility issue on: Diablo II, and a couple Stardock Desktop Customization applications, but ObjectDock & Fences work!

I haven't tried enabling the Virtualization in order to run the XP VM.

The shut down & startup times are excellent in my opinion... 15-18 seconds to completely shut down; 13 seconds from pressing the power button on to reach the OS Selection screen, and 45-50 seconds total to get the Desktop completely functional from a cold start, with 51 processes up & running.

anything else you were wondering about running Windows 7? (Granted just the 7100 build... haven't kept up with the changes)

Nice, I will be doing the same with mine next week. The RC is very good and a lot of people like it so people are using it as a primary operating system. Who wouldn't if they could? Ya must have a lot running to have 54 processes though. When I installed the RC on my desktop and after tweaking it, I had around 30. I am aiming for a 15 second boot up w/ everything loaded and a 8 second shut down using an SSD.

So you can see in the dark as you are typing. And it looks cool. Easily worth the $50.

Yes, you can replace a non backlit with one that is but its hard to find the backlit keyboard as HP doesn't sell it by itself I don't think.

I have a question about upgrading my HDX16. I originally ordered my laptop with the cheapest CPU with the 800mhz FSB and was wondering if anyone out there knows if upgrading the processor is possible at all.

Also i have found performance issues with the 64bit version of windows vista. Any suggestions from the crowd?

    FYI, HDX16t at hp.com with base T6600, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD and 1080p display is only $594 ($949.99 - $250 coupon -15% bing.com cashback).

That's almost half price of the base unit's list price (not that anyone ever pays that)...

Now don't expect to play those games on high or anything, but you'll be rocking games no biggie.

If I had my games list handy I'd post it, but I am getting sick of posting help here and getting no Rep points or any knowledge of help from the users. So, hey man, just "Search the Thread."

If it is a custom spec'ed one, then about 2 weeks from order to when you get it. Also, track the laptop and subtract 3 days from it. And don't worry too much what the tracking says, cuz its always early.

    Hi,
I am having trouble getting my new HDX16 1370US to connect to wireless N. Called tech support , updated driver for the intel 5100AGN card, still only connect on wireless G and at 56m. tech support suggested reinstalling original software again.

The card suppose to be capable connecting to N.
Under network/wireless connection, the system recognize N- from the SSID broadcast that it is an 802.11N full radio signal, but speed only reads 56m. If the router's radio TX is set to N only , the laptop would not connect to it.
With "G and N" transmission the laptop picks up the signal.
Furthermore: under intell5100AGN properties, advanced setting / radio modes only a b and G is available.
    Any suggestions, recommendations?

    thank you in advance.

I am trying to decide a few things on the hdx16 I’m customizing and wanted to see if anyone could help. I do gaming but nothing serious, counter strike and games like that, but am a huge multitasker with everything else I do. I am trying to decide between the P7550, the P8700, and P8800. I am also trying to decide if 4gb is enough, or if I should get 6 or 8. I am also thinking of bumping the 500gb down to 320 as I never see myself filling that up. Lastly, will the upgrade to W7 be the same as a full install or when it comes would it would it be smarter to do a clean install?

Right now, this is what I have:
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53 GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
    6GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M
FREE Upgrade to 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
    Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
    Full Size Backlit Keyboard
    6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

How long are the laptops in production? 2 days?

They are in production for quite a while. The fast part is the shipping. I ordered 2 hdx16s, one was returned. Both came 3 days faster than what the tracking said.

I’ve been enjoying my fully loaded new HDX16 for the past month and have a few questions.

Is it bad for the battery (die early or doesn’t hold a charge as long) to keep the laptop plugged in all the time?

Is it better let the battery get low, then charge it to max every once in awhile?

Is their any software in Vista or the HP OEM that you can manage your battery power cycle?

I know the battery life is no so good; I just wanted to know what I can do to prolong the battery life.
