Great deal. I feel bad for odrering one few days ago.
Looks like you might have missed 320GB 7200rpm HDD upgrade at +$0

    I removed:
    Adobe Acrobat (replacing with Foxit)
    Slingbox

There's also offers from Juno, Netzero, and Quicken on here. There's muvee movie editing software and cyberlink DVD suite which could be useful but you may have other software for these tasks that you prefer (which I do).

As for someone asking earlier about heat, the area directly under the touchpad (where the hard drive) is the hottest portion. Other than that, the system is cool on my lap. The processor, GPU, and HD are around 45-48 degrees celsius with web browsing and downloading 3dMark06. The position is flat on a table.

After more tests, I'll try to post a review.

My touchpad is a fingerprint magnet. Also, my left touchpad button is not even with my right touchpad button, clearly seen with the naked eye. The left one is about 1 mm higher up than the right button when looking at bird's eye view. :(

You know, considering since it's been less than 3 hours since I've physically owned the product.

Question: What applications work with the fingerprint reader? Does the fingerprint reader allow you to log into AIM, Facebook, MSN, etc. ?

And how much HDD space is consumed with the factory settings?

Yes I ordered 2 hdx16s. Both had small fit and finish defects. I returned the first one as it had a huge hump where the touch sensitive controls are. It would hit the screen when closed. The second has fit issues with the body and right speaker grill. But its not that bad and I don't really notice it anymore.

The fingerprint reader stores all your website passwords. So if you log into this forum or facebook, you just swipe your finger and it will put in your screen name and password. I don't know about msn etc tho, but I have heard that it works with MS office docs.

I did get the bing.com cashback email after purchase ($160 CB), but only time will tell as you must wait 60 days for the CB offer to mature. During that time, they could audit the sales and see you used a coupon and disqualify your CB.

So it is fair to say the HDX is loud, in fan terms, just like most of the entertainment laptops by HP?

No I wouldn't say that. My HDX16 is just damn silent. I've seen some other entertainment laptops from HP like DV4, DV5 and so on...which have got some loud exhaust systems (especially when they boot up...the fan sound gets at the peak). But compared to those...the HDX16 has got no such noise issue...at least for me...

    Buddy,

In order to use WiFi N. You need to set your WiFi N Router to WPA and WPA2 mode compatible or WPA2 on.

WiFi N needs WPA2 to work. You also need to enable inside your wifi card driver N mode.

I hope this solve your problem. User error.

    WPA / WPA2 Compatible mode
    WPA2 Only

Nooooo!!! Use only a non-ammonia, non-pump spray glass cleaner and use a good microfiber cloth.

Not sure where you are, but around here, Costco has aerosol glass cleaner in a spray can, and a big pack of yellow, soft, microfiber cloths.

Tilt your LCD as far back as you can, and then a light spray of glass cleaner. Not too much, or it runs. It sprays on kind of foamy so that helps to keep it from running.

I use the cleaner and cloths for EVERYTHING, and they are guaranteed not to scratch.

    Highly recommended.

Hello folks. I'm brand new here and will be the owner of an HDX16 in about an hour. I looked on the bing cashback site rules and found this...

"Do I need to know anything specific about shopping with HP?
Yes, customer should note the following when shopping with HP

The cashback percentage offered will apply to your entire order, before taxes and shipping costs.
Using a coupon (entering a coupon code at the payment page) will void your cashback.
Instant rebates and automatic free shipping on the HP Home & Office site will not void your cashback.
Partial returns of an order will be recalculated and the cashback will apply to the new total purchase amount before taxes and shipping charges."

    Bummer.

Been waiting for this 30% coupon to come out, but with the 25%+200$ instant rebate it is actually a better deal. I am now trying to decide a few things... here are the current specs:

Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53 GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
FREE Upgrade to 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M
FREE Upgrade to 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
    Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
    Full Size Backlit Keyboard
    6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I am trying to decide on 3 things...
    1. If I should go with Vista Ultimate... if so what are the advantages for the extra 120$.

    2. If I should bump it up to the P8800, will I see a big difference between the 2.53 and 2.66.

    3. Lastly, should i bump the 4gb up to 6gb, or wait and add more later.

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

I wonder whether any of you can help me out.

I want to buy a laptop soon to replace my antiquated HP DV1000. I've been looking at the HDX 16t but today I saw the HP dv6z with AMD processor. I'm not a gamer, but with my 6 year old I play some Lego Indiana Jones (and soon the Lego Harry Potter) PC games. My DV1000 sucks at even those tasks; I just need enough power to last for several years of kids' games, plus I do some video editing. Nothing too elaborate; I only use MovieMaker, but my old laptop can't even do that any more.

With the academic discount (I'm a professor) I can get either the dv6z or the HDX 16t for around the same price with around the same specs (500GB 7200rpm HD). The dv6z is probably $100 or $150 cheaper.
Oh, and I'm including the 25% bing.com rebate, b/c apparently you can use the academic discount and still get the bing.com rebate, although you can't use coupons with either one.

However, I don't know anything about AMD. Here are the processors for each machine (at the level that I was considering:
    dv6z: AMD Turion(TM) X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor ZM-85 (2.3GHz, 2MB L2 Cache)

    HDX 16t: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P7450 (2.13GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)

I mostly use the computer for web browsing, word processing, PowerPoint, a little bit of video editing (to make clips for PowerPoint). I watch some movies on it, but I'm not a connoisseur and I don't really care about Blu-Ray or super high definition.

Any thoughts? Again, the machines are roughly comparable in price and have the same size and speed of HD, same RAM, but the dv6z has the AMD processor and the 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 4530 from ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics.
The HDX 16t has the Intel processor and the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT.

Any perspective you might offer will be appreciated. Thank you.

As I am switching from failed AMD based HP dv6338se (from constant overheating) to HDX16t (just received last night) I would recommend going with Intel based notebooks.

I have been fan of both AMD and Intel at different times and based on my experience for the moment (technology changes fast), I would pick up an Intel based processor for notebook (oh wait... i just did).

As i was looking for great notebook (at a great price) that can handle some gaming, carried around a little (north of 7# it is not the lightest thing around), and would have a good quality screen (1080) HDX16t was very good choice on my opinion.

Thank you, dimil. I'm going to go with Intel over AMD. One more question for you or anyone else:

Do you know whether my son will require a dedicated graphics card in order to play a game on my computer that requires 64 MB with Vertex/Pixel Shader Compatibility, with 256 MB of video memory being recommended? The non-dedicated-graphics laptops, such as the HP dv3t, list 1759 MB of total graphics memory. Will that cover my son's gaming requirements (Lego Indiana Jones)? Because if I don't need a dedicated graphics card, I should probably get a lighter weight, longer battery life computer.

    Wow...talk about wireless issues.

I can't download VLC through FTP or HTTP, yet I can browse the web, upload through torrents, and can watch my streaming lectures. VLC is not down, I downloaded the file just fine on my Inspiron 1200.

I don't know much on requirements and compatibility of that game, but i can point out that dv3t series customizable laptop can also have 512MB NVIDIA GeForce G 105M card as an option. I do believe, that would be more than sufficient for it.

If this needs it's own discussion I'll gladly start one, but figured I'd stop in here first...

I just received my hdx16t Monday and promptly began removing unwanted software from the machine and updating Vista. I removed Norton and various HP programs I would never use.

Today at lunch, I popped it open and it had Vista had recovered from an unexpected shut down (or something to that effect). I didn't really think anything of it until I closed it to head back to work and I noticed it didn't go into stand-by mode. The hard drive activity light turned red (the ProtectSmart or whatever) then it began blinking furiously.

Upon reopening the laptop, it was at the black screen prompting to select "start windows normally" or "start windows in safe mode" etc.

Prior to this, I was installing drivers via Windows Update and got the dreaded BSOD then restart. When I went back into Update, I got an error which was described in the help as potentially caused by the drivers already being installed or older than the recommended drivers. I did not check to see if said drivers were updated prior to this posting.

Anyone else experiencing something similar now or in the past? Should I restore it back to factory settings and deal with the HP bloatware?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

I also just got the blue screen today after it installed some windows updates last night. It will not boot up normally without getting the blue screen. Boots in safe mode with networking fine. There must have been something in the update that is causing this but I don't have solution yet. And I'm at work so I haven't been able to mess with it. Anyone else having this problem?

Can anyone tell me what kind of battery life this gets with a 12-cell and the 130M?

When I got mine, I did windows update. Then left it at that. No BSODS. Yes it does have 80 processes going on, most HP. But I figured they were all important, plus I didn't want to risk deleting the ones that were not bloatware. It doesn't bother me. Doesn't slow down the computer one bit. I suggest that you do a recovery if you have a recover disk. Then, research carefully which HP programs are actually bloatware and which are not. I suspect you deleted something important, hence the BSODs.

If you put it on power saver and just web browse with screen at 40% brightness, about 2 and a half hours. If you are gaming, about 1 and a half.

I had the same problem after installing the update (I've had my computer for a little over a month and only have had maybe 3 random blue screens until now). I saw that there was another update available, but it wouldn't even start downloading before the BSOD appeared. I did system restore to two days ago, before the updates, and it worked fine. I re-installed the updates and repeatedly got the BSOD again. Right now I'm running in Safe Mode with networking enabled, and trying to find a BIOS update... is there one? The errors that appeared were:
    Stop: 0x0000007E
    and
    Stop: 0x00000050
Not really sure where to go from here, anyone have any ideas?

::edit:: just checked the forum at HP and found that the update KB973879 is the cause. The 'solution'/quick-fix given is to do system restore and make sure to not re-install that update. Some are saying that Microsoft has pulled it though. So I'll be trying again. Hope this helps everyone.

allisbright is right. You can go into control panel and then uninstall programs, uninstall updates and just uninstall KB973879. After I did this it's back to working normally again. There were 5 updates on 8/26/09 on mine and I uninstalled one at a time to try to pinpoint the problem. Wouldn't you know it KB973879 was the last one I uninstalled. Oh well, it's working now.

The windows update that cause BSOD for me was the IDT audio drivers or something. Pissed me off so much that a windows update would be released that causes a BSOD. For an advanced user, it's an easy fix. Had I been a noob, I would have called up HP and wasted so much time pinpointing the problem.

OPTI, u only get 2 hours with the 12 cell? I have the 9600m and a 12 cell, how long would that last me with less than 50% brightness and power saver battery mode of internet browsing/word processing. I'd like to see how long it would last me in class. I hope they have charging outlets in class because that 2 hour battery doesn't sound good =|
