Hey guys, I got my HP HDX16 a couple months ago and I am really pleased with its performance. I have a question however, is it possible for a CPU overclock on this laptop? I know we need the PLL code, has anybody tried it or found the code that works for it for use in SetFSB or Clockgen?
My specs are:
Core2Duo P7450 @ 2.13 ghz
4gigs DDR2
9600M GT Overclocked to 640/1500/509
I'm just trying to squeeze out the juices from this baby.
The laptop scores around 5600 in 3Dmark06 with the overclock.
-
I have the 130M. Its more powerful than the 9600m but uses the same power. My battery drain is probably due to my CPU. You can get almost 3 hours if you just browse internet. You'd probably go longer if you turn off bluetooth and wireless.
-
You also have double my ram (if that affects battery) and you're rockin the backlit keyboard.

Jeez. I hope they will have an option of a non-infinity display sooner.
-
This week I have received mine's from RMA.
It have F25 Bios (07/13/09). Not available yet to download Oo. -
Teerim, I updated vista with no issues. But I did see the IDT update but didn't update it yet in fear of bsods. How did you fix your issue?
-
My guess is I don't think they ever will.
-
When do you think they will have a touch enabled display? Windows 7 supports it.
Likely never? -
Why do you need an upgrade? Anyway, a 320 GB 7,200-rpm, 2.5-inch SATA unit from Fujitsu Mobile ($86.28) was rated highest in a comparison test by LAPTOP magazine (June '09). It's was also the most expensive among the group, but in my estimation--you get what you pay for.

Congrats! That's a great setup.
You can definitely create a new partition but you would need to resize or wipe out the current partitions. I recommend you back up both partitions before doing that. The software I used to backup was Clonezilla. It is not the most intuitive software but gets the job done. The next software you would need is a partitioning tool. The one I used was Parted Magic. GParted (from Parted Magic) helped me format, move and create the partitions after they were backed up. The latest version of Parted Magic includes Clonezilla as well. The approach I took was:
- Backed up both partitions (Clonezilla)
- Removed the C: partition (Parted Magic)
- Created a smaller NTFS partition for C: (Parted Magic)
- Moved the D: partition to the end of the C: partition (Parted Magic)
- Restored the C: partition (Clonezilla)
- The remaining space I used for creating additional partitions (Parted Magic)
Everything worked flawless for me. However, I would not recommend this approach to a novice user. You truly need to know what you're doing before tackling this task as you could easily render your system unusable if you make a mistake... -
Hi, I am planning to order new HDX16, i just still cant decide which configuration to choose. My doubt is between the p7550 and p8800 processor. The difference in price is 175 bucks, but i checked some benchmarks online and the performance is only little better, somewhere the p8800 gets even worse results. I plan to use the computer for everyday use - school,
, and occasionally some games (thats why i got the 130m graphics card). Do you think the p8800 is worthy that money?
Btw i am also curious about heating. -
Just placed an order for this notebook to replace my two year old Dell Vostro 1500. I'm mainly looking forward to the increased screen resolution over my vostro. (1920x1080 vs 1280x800). Hopefully this notebook is as reliable as my vostro has been!

I am so siked, I have been reading everyone's comments here over the past few months regarding this little gem so I had to order my own. I have been using an HP Pavilion dv5z-1100 provided by my employer for the past few months and I have been pretty pleased with it overall, except for the fact that it's an AMD Turion X2 and eats battery life like crazy and get's WAY TOO HOT to handle from time to time. Overall Vista ran okay on the dv5z, but Windows 7 was absolutely awesome.
Anyway, mine is in transit at this time, in fact FedEx says it's just left Memphis, TN on it's way to me. Since I will not be buying another notebook anytime soon, I figured I'd go all out on this one so it carries me through the next four years of school. The configuration I order is as follows:
HP Pavilion HDX16t Premium Series Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition x64 (Includes Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade)
Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 Processor (3.06GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz. FSB)
8GB DDR2 PC2-6400 System Memory (2 x 4GB DIMMS)
500GB 7200RPM Serial-ATA II Hard Drive with ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M Graphics Card
16" (1920x1080p) Ultra Brightview Infinity LCD Display
Blu-Ray +/-R/RW with SuperMulti Drive
Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
Intel NextGen WiFi 5100 Wireless with Bluetooth Module
HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
Full Size Backlight Keyboard
One 6-Cell & One 12-Cell Lithium-ion Battery Packs
3yrs. Norton Internet Security 2009
4yrs. LoJack for Laptops
4yrs. Accidental Damage Protection Extended Service Plan
500GB HP Pocket Media Drive
I can't wait to get my hands on this and rebuild it with Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Edition x64. I've got the RTM release in my hands and ready to go...
To the user who has created the post with all of the updated drivers, many thanks and please keep up the great work, I found that post absolutely awesome...
Report to follow once I get this baby in my hands... -
Hey congrats! I'm sure you'll love it.
-
GREAT !!!! I think this is the max config of this beast..
-
Has anyone happened to put an SSD into their HP HDX16 yet? Searched forums, couldn't find any info.
-
I've been here for awhile and from what I've seen, no one that I know of has installed a SSD into the hdx16 yet.
-
Yes, there are some people who have the scratched screen problem as you've mentioned. Unfortunately HP will not help you there because they consider it a user fault. You can however prevent it, by using the black cloth keyboard protector thingy that comes with your laptop when new.
As for the backlit keyboard, there are some on ebay and I think someone has installed it on here but not sure if the ports are available for it. -
I put a Patriot Torqx 128GB in my HDX16t. Works great!
-
Did you notice a significant difference? Is it worth it?
-
Hi everyone. I'm new here, but I've been lurking around for about the past month and a half, or the past 40 pages.
I just recently purchased my HDX16 and I'm absolutely loving it! I've had it for about 3 weeks now.
However, I do have one concern. It's nothing hardware based so I'm not going bother posting my specs unless it's absolutely needed. I do have the 1080p infinity screen though, and I've been reading a lot about people scratching their screens. My screen has a little scratch on it, but it's not really a scratch. It's about a centimeter long but I can't feel it. It's still smooth on the surface, which makes me believe it is on the inside of the screen, if that is possible. Also, I have ALWAYS used the keyboard cloth that came packaged with the laptop. Well, I have only not used it twice, but it was for probably 10 minutes at the most. The scratch does happen to land close to where the touch pad is, but I can't feel the scratch.
Does anyone have anything similar to this scratch appearance on the inside of the screen? Any feedback would be awesome. Do you think HP would take it back and send me a new one? It doesn't really seem "user-caused", and it is really annoying and distracting to me. Every time I glance up at it I cringe.
Thank you! -
If you do a search for infinity display, you will see alot of people complain about dust and such getting inside the display itself. That is cuz there is an empty space between the real screen and the plastic that is covering it. I personally don't have this issue because I dust mine off once a week and never took it outside.
Was the line there when your computer was new? I've read on here that someone had a hair inside theirs. After shipping it back 3 times and taking to a case manager, they finally replaced the whole screen. But if you do complain to HP, most of the time they will say that it is user's fault. -
The SSD upgrade is an enthusiast upgrade. You will see a HUGE speed difference when loading anything. ( I am first loaded on TF2 99% of the time now) but its not like everyone else is half a minute behind...its more like 5 seconds and everyone else starts coming in. So, to put it in short...if ya can get it, and you want to...it will be FAST...but if you do not really need or want to, wait for them to be cheaper that's all.

My HDX16 has just started having some problems. It's not too old (maybe 2 months at the most).
So I'm sure you all know that when you hit the volume/bass/treble controls on the mediasmart bar a box pops up. Well this box pops up on its own and the treble or the bass (whichever one its set on at the time) starts adjusting itself uncontrollably. I have not figured out how to stop it while it's doing it. I pretty much have to wait for it to stop on its own. Also, the wireless function has decided to randomly shut itself off. I can turn it right back on though and it works however this is still unacceptable. I think it mostly happens when the bass/treble control is acting up. I can't recall if it happened independently of that.
Does anyone know what could be wrong and of any ways to fix this short of sending it in for repair? -
I tried the above but somehow I'm not able to create a bootable media (CD/USB) for Clonezilla. But I found that you can change the Partition using Disk Manager itself in Vista. There is an option to shrink/extend the partition when you select a partition and that gets the job done. Planning to install Ubuntu Linux soon on one of the partitions. -
Good morning all, I have a question and im hopeing you all can help.
Two things.
1) i ordered my pc with the lowest end processor and was wondering if anyone here knows if it is possible to upgrade the processor on these laptops(warrenty not a concern)
2) my hard drive the other day made some very strange ticking and then the system board beeps. It has happened twice so far and the extended system diagnostic tells me nothing. According to HP they cant and wont do anything unless the diagnostic says there is a problem.
Any Ideas? -
Funny, the two things you mentioned I haven't tried. I didn't attempt to make a bootable media with Clonezilla (never felt the need) nor have I tried Disk Manager in Vista. That's good that you were able to shrink/extend the partitions. I also have Ubuntu Linux installed. Everything works great with the exception of the sound. You need to tweak the system in order to get sound. You can find more information on the forums (specifically ubuntuforums.org).

Seems that i got a dead pixel and a small spot of dust/dirt or glue in infinity screen. (laptop is only a few days old)
HP's warranty service failed to handle both:
They need to have at least 5 dead pixels for handling it in warranty.
And they did suggest physical damage for the infinity screen issue.
So i will be returning laptop back to HP...
Problems with motherboard on my old DV6338se did not help either (i did gave HP another chance).
On the bright side, maybe it will be worth waiting for next generation of mobile CPUs to show up on market (should be only a few month away) -
1. Yes.
2. I don't have this issue. Good luck. -
still waiting for my laptop to come...im counting down the days
-
I just ordered one as well. It only sux that i have to wait 14 days for them to assemble it. I look forward to coming back here for help, seems like a nice community you have here with out much flaming (atleast from the few threads ive seen but everyone is a hardcore fan of something) Anyways thanx for all the info you guys provide.

Hi guys,
I just bought an HDX 16, model # X16-1354CA from Futureshop in Canada
So far so great, I'm very happy with the gaming performance but I have a few questions.
1) Is there a noticeable improvement in speed going from a 5400rpm drive to a 7200rpm drive on this particular model of laptop? It comes equipped with a 500GB 5400rpm HD.
2) Is the french keyboard standard? I really don't like the key layout, feels very alien to me, and I am often hitting the wrong keys because I'm not used to it. There's these weird blue symbols on half the keys that don't even make sense to me. I can take a pic if you want to see it yourself. It's weird.
3) Any big difference going from a 2.00Ghz CPU to a 2.53ghz CPU? -
I don't know about the speed difference in the 2ghz vs. 2.53 ghz, but the P8700 (2.53ghz) is the lowest chip that has virtualization in it. If you plan to virtualize 64-bit OS's, this might be a concern for you.
-
I'm not really worried about virtualisation.
-
1. Only slight. The 7200rpm boots up a few seconds faster. It can spin faster, thus access files faster. So programs will load faster, but only 1 or 2 secs faster.
2. No idea. I suspect since you live in Canada, where alot of French speakers live, you got that keyboard, especially if you live in Quebec. It is not standard in the US.
3. The 2.53ghz cpu has 6mb cache, while the 2.0 has 3mb cache. You'll notice a difference if you are gaming. But not much IMO. The cpu can also be upgraded should you decide in the future. But you'll void the warranty and have to disassemble the entire laptop. -
No according to intel the P8700 only has 3mb cache.
-
anyone think the laptop will be able to handle a 7200rpm drive from a thermal perspective? wasn't it designed with a 5400rpm in mind?
i dont want the thing to constantly overheat
also, anyone know if these keyboards are interchangeable? I got a bilingual keyboard with french accents on some of the keys and some other keys are in odd places so i'd love to swop the kb with a US only kb, without the french accents on the keys. -
I have a 320GB 7200 RPM hard drive on my laptop and I don't have heat issues with my laptop (Hard drive never goes over 55 degrees celsius). But that is also due to the fact that and the bios has the fan settings to always on.
I would also like to know if the keyboard is changeable. I'm not a fan of the slickeness of the glossy keyboard. Been using the Dell and Sony plastic style keyboards for so long, it's hard adjusting. -
Do you find that the tiny little fan next to the HD turns on more often than not?
When the laptop is under load this tiny little fan next to the HD turns on and buzzes away, it's not quiet at all. Is this a design flaw or is it something wrong with my laptop specifically? -
I don't necessarily hear a buzzing sound but the fan is definitely not a quiet one. You can pretty much hear it if you aren't doing anything on the laptop that doesn't involving the speakers.
-
A design flaw? The fan comes on when it need to cool the system down. It's a small fan. The only way to move the hot air out with the small blades is to spin very quickly. As such, it will make noise. I don't know of many compact, high performance (high heat) laptops that are quiet.
A design flaw would be if the laptop were quiet (the fans don't come on) and the unit runs hot to the touch.
If you try setting your BIOS to have the fan always on, it tends to spin slower, but more constant since the temps stay more constant, hence a bit less noise.
As you said yourself, "under load"...at that point everything is running hot and the system needs to cool itself down. It's the nature of the beast, as they say. -
Hey thanks for the reply. When I say design flaw, I understand that it's supposed to turn on to dissipate the heat but it's the noise which is rather disturbing which is very unlike the ambient hum of the CPU fan even when that is under load and spins up. It's a clear defined buzzing noise, it just doesn't sound right to me, I wouldn't expect a tiny little fan like this one to make such a noise.
I will take a look at the BIOS but my understanding is that the setting to have the fan always on while plugged in only affects the CPU fan. -
When you order it, you can customize it to a 7200rpm or a 5400. I got the faster one. Therefore, it can handle it.

Hi Everyone,
New member here, I bought a hp hdx16 four months ago. From the start, theres been a problem with the sound (annoying clicking when you use the buttons above the keyboard) This is apparently caused by the smosd dialog box. I have managed to stop this altogether by disabling the sound card ( simply muting the sound does not work for me) would any of you guys know if hp plan to have a fix sorted for this problem. I don't want to return the laptop to where I bought it unless its absolutely necessary.
cheers
Symi -
Yo have to disable the buttons sound in BIOS
55º is pretty high for a hard drive.
If it reachs 60º say goodbye to him.
