the power "plug" for the ribbon connector is on my motherboard! (there are two on the backlit keyboard, one on the regular keyboard)
the keyboard swap does seem possible.

I'd like some more info about the potential screen scratching problem. Is it a given that some sort of insert must be placed between the screen and keyboard when the laptop is closed?

I hope this isn't true as I would consider it a serious design defect if there isn't a sizable gap between the screen and keyboard when closed. My laptop generally sits on a coffee table and is routinely opened and closed depending on what I'm doing. Having to put a cover over the keyboard every time I close it would be unacceptable.

There have been reports of this by a few hdx16 owners. However, I don't have this issue at all. Just yesterday I cleaned my screen and there are no scratches. I however, almost never close my lid and when I do, I put the keyboard cover cloth in, that comes with the laptop when shipped. I also rarely take it outside.

Yes, the screen does rest close to the keyboard when closed, but I do see a gap between them. I suspect that users with this problem have somehow applied pressure to the lid when close, thus scrapping the keyboard. Also, there may be dirt on the screen when they closed it.

I will tell you that yes, the screen does rest really close to the keyboard compared to other laptops without the infinity screen option. Unfortunately the hdx16 only comes with this screen. Hope this helps.

I have a question regarding the HP quicklaunch buttons.

Until now, everything was working flawlessly on Windows 7 X64. I could skip/stop/pause songs using the buttons through programs like COWON JETAUDIO (my favorite media player), but suddenly yesterday, the buttons stopped working while the program is minimized, and now it works only when it's the active application.

    Anybody had a similar problem?

I have a ~8 month hold HDX16. About a month ago my laptop would intermittently stop drawing power from the AC adapter. If I fiddled with the connection a bit it would usually "find" the power source again and would start to charge, but it started getting worse and worse. I contacted HP and they sent me out a new adapter.

Guess what -- same thing is happening again. This time I noticed that when the adapter stops charging, the pin on the end is VERY hot -- like scalding hot! It's obviously not an adapter problem and is a problem with something inside the laptop, because it's getting way, way too hot. Is this a common problem? Any idea on how to handle it? I'm still under warranty so I should be OK but I want to know what to tell HP support to do -- my experience is they aren't very proficient. Thanks in advance for any help.

Anyone know how the Win7 upgrade option works with this? Do you get a Win7 disc in the mail? Can the restore disc/Win7 upgrade disc/whatever you receive be used to perform a clean install without the crapware?

I asked this question prior to ordering my HDX16. I was told that the Win 7 will be shipped directly from Microsoft and will be a clean install.

You will lose your factory install partition though since the hard drive will be formatted during the install process.

Seriously thinking about grabbing HDX 16 this week. Had a few questions as far as processors is the price jump worth the different processor between lowest model T6600 and P7450 or P7550 . I am not a serious gamer i do a lot of video converting. what would the different processors give me for the price jump?

That's pretty awesome and is the best-case scenario. I assume it comes with its own CD key?

Now all I need to do is find a working termsrv.dll that will enable Remote Desktop on Win7 Home Premium.

Edit: I also wonder if the disc from MS is tied to any specific PC/OEM or if it can be installed on any PC.

One guy did it cuz he had 2 hdx16s with both screens so he could decide which screen he liked best. He ended up keeping the higher screen. I don't know where is the post, somewhere in this thread. Do a search.

I just got my HDX16 2 days ago, and this forum has got some really good information to use it to the fullest.

One thing, I would like to know is, has anybody tried "Internet TV" from MediaSmart Panel?

I haven't got TV Tuner in my HDX. But, Internet TV should work without it. When I open Internet TV tab, it get stuck on "Waiting for Internet Content...Downloading"

    TIA.

Anyone else experience periodic disconnections with their wireless card? My old Dell Inspiron 1200 doesn't experience it at the same spot from the router and there are no drop offs when I move my HDX16 to a closer proximity to the router.

OK guys, i am a little confused. Posting this out here since you guys know the ups and downs of the *coupons* more than me. I have my eyes set on a HDX16t and right now the $500(coupon + instant rebate) looks like good offer, although I am not in an urgent need of a laptop.

Would you recommend waiting till thanksgiving to get one(core i5 release etc, would we get one of those in HDX16t) or should I just grab the deal right now? Any opinions welcome and appreciated

The hdx16 is getting old now. Almost 1 year old. Just a FYI. However, I don't know when HP replaces their laptops. If you are going to spend past $2000, then wait for the 30% off coupon that comes once a month, usually in the middle of the month. It would save you more than the $500 off. Saved me $1000 off my full spec'ed one. Google it.

the keyboard swap works fine. ebay has them for $30 shipped.

11 or so screws, a delicate removal of speaker cover and even more delicate removal of the keyboard ring and that's about it.

the LED power cable is quite fragile...and you have to push on it to get it in the motherboard connector...push too much and kink the ribbon and you have a regular non-backlit keyboard.

With the risk of installing yourself, It was probably worth the 50 to just have the backlit keyboard put on at the factory, heh.

I have the same issue. The HP MediaSmart support site says that for the TV portion to work you need a TV tuner installed.

Redtomato did you get this resolved? If so how?

Does anybody else have any thoughts on this?

I'm pretty much sure that you don't need TV tuner for "Internet TV" tab. Yes, "TV Channels" tab won't work without TV tuner.

I haven't got it resolved. I called HP tech support, and as usual, they don't know why its not working. The Tech support guy kept on saying that it should work, but, he doesn't know why its not working. Thats typical HP.

I decided to wait. With the release of core i7 processor dell has a new laptop which costs more but is worth the price for blu ray rom, core i7, ddr3 and radeon 4670. HP Envy is also going to release in October. Lets see if we can get those new models cheap around black friday. Do you know how long after the launch of a new laptop model will we have the 30% off coupons?

just purchased the HDX16 for 901.01 out the door. Pretty much had to upgrade the HDD, graphics to get the coupon to activate. I figure I can upgrade the CPU in the future on my own. Warranty I will purchase before the basic warranty is done it does not make sense purchasing extra warranty when it does not extend the warranty it only enhances the warranty.

No. There is a partition on the hard drive where the OS is stored. You can make your own disc from there. Or you can order one which I did which was about $19.

Yes, but won't that recovery OS have all the HP garbage software installed? I'm trying to do a clean install.

If I install 64-bit Windows 7, will 64-bit Windows Vista drivers work? Can I just download them through Windows Update?

I see some posts about replacing the older keyboard with a backlit keyboard. Does anyone have the process to do this documented with photos? link to order the keyboard from HP? (I can't find any on ebay).

So no problems replacing the non backlit with the backlit version? The motherboard has the extra power slot?

I know it's been done on the HDX18. Don't see why you couldn't do the same on the 16. Also, once the keyboard is removed I believe you'll have full access to the wifi card.

Check sparepartswarehouse for the part number, or your HDX16 service manual.

Anyone having difficulties playing a Blu-Ray movie using the MediaSmart app onto a LCD tv via the HDMI port?
I am getting the following error "The content is protected. The Content is not allowed to play in the current display mode."
I know this error has to do with a Blu-Ray media not allowing it to be played on two different displays at the same time.
So, I would select the TV as the ONLY display (through nVidia control panel) and then start the MediaSmart software. I know that the disc plays just fine if I am playing it on the laptop screen only. The moment I connect the HDMI cable for an external display, and no matter what combinations I try in terms of display (I have tried dual, extended, single modes) I get the above error.
Before purchasing the HDX16, I had used Dell XPS Studio 16 and SONY laptop and with both of them I was able to watch the blu-ray movie on my SONY 46 inch HDTV through HDMI. And I would do the same thing where I would set the output to be only on my HDTV and was able to watch movie just fine. At one time, I did get this error and that's when I found out that I can only play movies on my HDTV if I use only one display.

So I am not sure why the MediaSmart software is not recognizing the fact that I am not connected to a dual display. I have even tried to set the Single display to be my HDTV and then reboot it.

I just upgraded the MediaSmart DVD to version 2.2.2.2905 from HP's website.

    Any suggestions?
    Thank you!
    Manoj

    Hey everyone.

I have a question about processes in the task manager. Recently my laptop I've owned for almost 2 months now has been running slower. I checked my processes in task manager and it aid I have 87 processes, my CPU uage was very high, and I'm using about 57-60% physical memory. I googled every one listed in my processes tab in Windows Task Manager to see what exactly they each did and if they were safe or not to delete, but a lot seemed specific to the things on my HDX16... like digital persona, media smart, etc. So I'm asking here which are safe to keep or delete?

But the thing is, I only have about 30 processes listed in my processes tab, but at the bottom it says 87 processes. I don't know where those other 50 (roughly) seem to be hiding, but I really want to get rid of what I don't need.

I don't want to end any that are irreversible or will damage my computers functions and capabilities. So any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a link to an image of my ridiculously high number of processes...

    http://i33.tinypic.com/evbzls.jpg

ALSO. My "s" key on my keyboard has not been working all the time when I push it. Is this something that happens to a many people? I'm thinking about seeing if I can exchange this laptop for a new one since that scratch-behind-my-screen-that-I've-concluded-is-a-hair is still annoying me and doesn't seem to want to leave.

I have done that too where I would extend the desktop to the TV and move the MediaSmart software on that window before playing the DVD. No change.

I read somewhere that you'd have to disable the laptop display for it to work.

Haven't been able to est that though.

I ordered a custom HDX16t from Hp on 09/23/2009. On 09/30/2009 I got an email from HP stating the it had been shipped. I've been going to the FedEx tracking site several times daily ever since and kept getting a "Not Found". message. I finally called FedEx and they told me that due to holidays in China, nothing is leaving China until 10/07. It is in a container waiting to leave. Looks like I'll have over another week to wait. Sure which that I had been told that before ordering.

That's borderline criminal. I'm in almost as bad of a spot. My computer arrived at my house but I am 2000 miles away from it. I have to wait two weeks to get to see it so I share your pain.
