Sorry for the cross-post, but I mistakenly placed the following text in the HDX18 thread. I use a HDX16.

I'm getting a loud pop from the speakers everytime I reboot or power down my HDX16. It happens the moment before complete shutdown. I'm running Win7 x64 with the current BIOS from the HP site. Has anyone else had this problem?

Pretty sure they disabled that eject button a long time ago w/ one of the updates.

I got my HDX in May and my eject button has never worked.

This could be the fingerprint reader driver. At least that's what I think it is. I've heard of this a ton before.

Check out the Driver thread, you should be able to figure it out there.

Yeah, let me know. I thought that was disabled since it was popping the dvd tray open on random occasions.

Kind of like the Bass/Treble/Volume showing on the screen. Mine used to, but one of the updates I did must have disabled them. Now they never come on the screen.

I kind of miss the on screen display of those volume settings though. I was one of the ones that never had any problems w/ them.

I think it is a problem is software ,thank God it was not about my hardware !

    Hi,

I have HDX16 1355ee. It has a built-in DVB-T TV Tuner which unfortunately cant receive any analog signals (told by Tech Support). Is there anyway to make it to receive analog channels as well? Im in Dubai and here Digital service is not so common. Please let me know if there is any converter available so that i can watch analog cable channels using my DVB-T Tuner.

I recently order a custom made HDX16. The website says it was shipped but I was wondering if the shipment will be delayed because of China's week long holiday. The customer service rep at HP told me the item is still being worked on even though the website says "item shipped" and it gives a tracking number.

Do shipments get stuck over there? Just wondering so I can plan my Thursday/Friday.

Does anyone know how to temporarily disable the MCE infrared receiver? It's a cool feature, but I have a Media Center PC right in front of my HDX16 and unfortunately the receivers in both PCs pick up my Media Center PC remote's IR signal. This has obvious and undesirable consequences.

Put some electrical tape over the IR Sensor. Should do the trick.

It's right on the front under the fingerprint reader (at least on the HDX18).

Cool, I found the sensor on the lower right side next to the headphone jacks. I'm afraid that electrical tape will leave some residue though. I suppose I can disable the associated devices in Device Manager, but the problem is that the eHome Receiver has like 5 different items, which is a bit odd.

Also, my keyboard has a bit of flex, and upon examination I see that the upper middle section is raised a bit. I wonder if something is stuck under there or if it's not seated properly. How do you lift the keyboard and would attempting a fix void my warranty?

True. And Cyberlink does come free with the HDX (@ least w/ the HDX18). Check your SWSETUP folder (C:\SWSETUP) if you don't already have it installed.

I choose not to install it once I got my HDX18, but then later I did to try it out and it worked well for editing recorded shows. I could delete commercials and etc out of shows I recoreded either on Windows Media Center or HP MediaSmart TV.

In addition to this question (that hasn't been answered yet...)

I now have my laptop plugged in and it says the battery is at 71% and not charging. It's the 12 cell battery. I checked the "Battery Check" thing and a few days ago it said Good. Now it says replace. I've only had this laptop for 2 months and I'm almost positive batteries have life spans longer than that. Is there any possible explanation that might have caused my battery to SUCK? I'm kinda pissed right now actually. If I contact HP will they send me a new battery?

Also my "s" key problem seems to have fixed itself. Not too impressed at the quality of the keys either....

    1) Did you ever click on the "Show processes from all users" button on the bottom left corner of your task manager and see if anything more showed up on the list? Other than that you can download any of the free process/task managers out there (e.g. webkeysoft process manager etc.) and give 'em a try.
    2) I don't think that having the "s" key not working is a common thing to all HDX users. [However, it seems not to be your concern anymore]
    3) You really should do a forum search regarding that as optimustarzan mentioned. Anyways, I can give you a hint. Take the battery out for a couple of minutes and then reinsert and turn on the machine to see if it's charging or not.

    Hope that helps...

I think its normal enough, they do lose charge after sitting for abit.

Does yours jump from 100% to around 92 when you run the battery from a fresh charge?

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I've been reminded why I hate taking apart things that aren't made to be taken apart. Attempting removal of the "switch cover" to get to the keyboard was far too scary for me. I took the screws out but it appears you need to use excessive force on the this tiny plastic part.

Can anyone else comment on keyboard flex? The upper middle section of my keyboard is definitely raised compared to the rest and that's where the flex is. I've seen other laptops where a wire runs under the keyboard and if improperly mounted it will cause a raised portion with flex.

Managed to remove and replace the keyboard with one I got off ebay for $30. Works great, and now I have the backlit keyboard. Yes, it takes some patience to remove the covers, but they do come off (just pull on them slowly and gently and they will come off. Keep track of the screws so you remember where they go. Love the backlit keyboard.

I bought the bluetooth module to put in but already reinstalled teh keyboard covers and didn't want to disassemble again....

Did you use a special tool to remove the "switch cover" or just your fingers? I can see myself breaking the damn thing with either. :(

i just used my fingers for mine.
it was delicate but it didn't break.
the best part was buttoning it all up, i feel the keyboard and trim/switch cover are snugger than they originally were from the factory.

i started at the top and worked one side and then the other.
it was a bunch of gentle tugging. this is not coming out at all like i mean it to.

I just used a very small flat tip screwdriver, but didnt' really need it, mostly just used fingers and slowly removed the covers. While they are plastic, they are made well and are pretty durable.

    VICTORY!

In a sheer battle of will, I have defeated the HDX16 keyboard! Many thanks to all the folks here at NotebookReview and hpdhx.net that provided info on the keyboard removal process.

It took me at least an hour, maybe more. I can say that if you lack a proper plastic prying tool, an old credit card or driver's license will work nicely. After finally looking underneath the keyboard, I found what I always thought to be the problem - an unseated wire that was lifting the keyboard at the upper right hand side. I easily placed this wire into its proper recessed groove and now the keyboard is even and has much less flex.

    :D

No upgrade for me, just a regular old non-backlit keyboard that lacks features such as:

    1. Keyboard flex
    2. Loose wire stuck under middle of keyboard

I'll also add that driver's license + working from "inside out" on the keyboard cover worked well. Thanks again for the advice.

For those looking to disable the ENECIR eHome MCE remote control, I have found what I believe is the easiest and cleanest way to do so. This works with the driver installed and and involves deleting the receiver's registry key. This was tested on Win7 x64 but will probably also work for Vista. Remember to reboot after you make any changes to the registry.

Here is the registry code to delete the key and turn the receiver OFF (save as remote_off.reg and import into registry):

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\HidIr\Remotes\745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da]

Here is the registry code to add the key and turn the receiver ON (save as remote_on.reg and import into registry):

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\HidIr\Remotes\745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da]

Hey guys i figured this would be the best place to ask how the HDX16 is. I used to have an HP laptop and the motherboard and graphics card went 6 months down the line. Not sure why i only played World of Warcraft on it but it did get warm. Does the HDX get warm when playing games? I plan on doing light gaming on the HDX if i decide to get it. I really wanted the Envy15 but 1700 - 1800 on a laptop is insane. Any input on getting the HDX16 would be great.

I plan a laptop next month after windows 7 comes out. Just wanted to add iv been looking at Lenovo, Dell, HP, and Sony which one should i get? ( I know this an HP thread lol but just curious what you guys think ).

2 hours of trackmania with mines on a flat surface not being raised off of it, no fan blowing on it either, but this is a 18, maybe the 16 runs slightly warmer.

As to which to get, just pick what you think will last longer.

Wow Blaze!! 85 Max on the GPU!! I shut down my games once it gets over 70.

I found that when gaming if I put a book between my lap and HDX it runs WAY cooler.

My GPU core idles at 60c normally on a flat surface, but my room's rather warm most of the time, just about anywhere else its in the 55 range.

I don't think 85c is that bad, that was just a peak after all, games usually only make it to 80.

For those that lost their On-Screen Display for the Volume and Bass/Treble levels along w/ losing the functionality of the Bass/Treble Sliders - You can get them back and working by following this guide!

Hi, I recently purchased a HDX16 and it's working wonders with Vista (64), I'm planning to upgrade to Windows 7 and I was wondering if anyone here has any experiences regarding this, I would like to upgrade to W7 Ultimate instead of Home Premium (so it has to be a clean install as far as I understand since the one I have is Vista Home Premium), but I don't know if all the drivers and applications (fingerprint scanner/media center etc) will be able to work with Windows 7 Ultimate, has anyone here tried a clean install to Windows 7 ultimate? any advice or suggestion is appreciated.

I've had my HDX16 for almost a year now. I love the laptop and great performance but there are a few things that are bothering me about it. The touch sensitive buttons are crazy and my wireless button goes haywire sometimes randomly turning the wireless on/off. Secondly the fan, whenever my laptop is on high performance even if its not doing anything the fan goes to full blast. As soon as I switch to power saver setting the fan calms down. This is kind of annoying since power saver makes everything lag and I don't want the loud fan noise to annoy people around me at school.

Have you updated all your drivers and flashed you BIOS? Is your fan set to "Always On" in the BIOS. Might help?
