I faced a strange problem yesterday. I was watching a movie on my HDX 16 and after a while I wanted to browse the internet. All of a sudden my laptop was not responding at all for almost 5 mins and I have to do a force shutdown by pressing the power button. Once restarted, I'm not able to connect to the internet through wired/wireless network. When I checked I found that I found that there are no network devices to connect to (Ethernet/Wireless). I checked in the Device Manager, there also I'm not able to find my Ethernet Adapter/ Wireless device. When I clicked on the Wireless touch switch, the light turns to red and displays "BlueTooth Device turned off", which means there is no Wireless device. Same case when I tried to boot in Ubuntu Linux.
Finally I shutdown down my laptop and went to sleep thinking of calling the Customer care in the morning as it looked like a hardware issue. When I booted my laptop in the morning, to my surprise everything worked perfectly as before without any issues.
Any clue on what happened? -
I have some questions about this actually.
I just flashed my BIOS for the first time since buying my HP HDX16T-1200 CTO. According to all my HP update notices, nothing ever needs updating, driver or otherwise. I am assuming that HP's software does not function properly and does not alert me about drivers. With that in mind...
Is there any easy way to accumulate all the information concerning the version numbers of my drivers? I guess I could go through and download all of them and install them one at a time, but I'd prefer to avoid that if possible. I'm also unsure that all the drivers are necessary for me. Do I need that Intel chipset driver? Etc. Etc. Etc.
I'm also curious how my HP will function if I purchase a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. There's a killer deal for students and, since I'm a student, it looks like something I'd like to take advantage of. I don't want to have to install my drivers one step at a time, but if I have to I will. I'd just like the be mentally prepared for that
Any experience on that end? I'm running Vista Home Premium (64 bit) now.
-
Hey, best thing to do is go here and update all your drivers especially the ones we talked about!
W7 runs awesome on the HDX. You'll most likely have to do a fresh install, but then just go to the same link and update all the drivers again.
Hope this helps!

Greetings everyone, love the forum! I've been looking for a place where I could discuss my HDX with other HDX-owners.. Guess I've come to the right place!
Anyway, I suppose you could just read my profile to see hdx specs, but if you're lazy Ill just list em briefly: its the HDX 16 1375DX, 2.27 GHz dual core centrino, 4 GB ram, 500 GB HDD, 1 GB video memory via GeForce 130M GPU; eSATA 1GB External HDD, finger reader (wouldve traded that feature off for a Blu ray rom) DVD RAM w/ lightscribe, running Windows Ultimate 64-bit edition.
Ok, two things:
1) My Win7 "User experience rating" is 5.4. Nearly every game I have has a "recommended system rating of 4-5) I understand this is just kind of a extremely vague "benchmark", but one would assume with my system specs I could run all games at 1920 x 1200, 32bit, all gfx settigns set to high, with all the bells and whistles. Not the case... Some games, yes, excel with these settings (madden, NHL, some RTS games) However popular FPS games is where the **** hits the fan. Call of duty WaW I have my setting at 1280 x 960 (if i remember correctly) or else the FPS rate drops so low i feel like im looking at a picture slideshow. I think to myself, what exactly do these game developers believe what type of systems we all have? Are these games meant to be played on 10 GB Ram and 6 GHZ processor just to get a 30FPS framerate? Sorry Im not spending 10K on a desktop just to kill a couple Charlie's in high-def.
2) I've done pretty extensive research into trying to find out precisely what type of sound system does my system posses. Box doesn't show much, device driver just shows some RealTek, exterior of laptop case shows AltecLansing, not sure if thats kinda like a cheap rip-off of HarmonKardonn?? The reasonw why I bring this point up is because I want to install a 7.1 system in my comp room, and I don't believe the stock sound card is capable of producing such sound. Even with HDMI out, it produces only 2 channels. That's why I've purchased the Soundblaster Audigy 2Z ( http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?Inv...mpaign=SB0530C This device looks as thou it will do the trick. Can hardly wait till it arrives. (2 more days) Does anyone else have any interesting sound setups? I even have the speakers set up already. My HDX comes with an ExpressPCI/54 slot, however this device says it requires a "CardBus II"... Are these the same inputs just different name? I've attempted to do research on both of these items but one just seems to lead me back to the other...
Any and all info would be much appreciated. -
Pretty sure to get the 7.1 you either need to get the HP Docking Station or get an external ExpressCard Sound Card.
Also, we have a great HDX community over at hphdx.net! -
I can play the same Call of Duty @ 1080! Every game I play at 1080, not sure where you are getting the 1200 res? Your screen should max out at 1080.
Of course I've overclocked my 9600M using this guide.
-
Overall I am happy with mine. If you want a high-resolution screen for a good price, this is the laptop to get.
I went with this HDX16 because of the specs, price, and a previous good experience with the HP DV6000 laptop. That model got warm when gaming, but I never had any hardware issues with it. It's built very solid compared to other models in this price range. The HDX16 isn't quite as solid, but it's in the same ballpark and also likely better than most in the price range.
The HDX does get warm when gaming, but never really hot. Most of the heat comes from where your left palm rests.
With Lenovo you're going to have to spend a lot more money to get the same specs. The Lenovo is probably built more solidly, but you are going to pay a lot more for it. Don't even think about getting any of the Dell Studio models. I returned a Dell Studio 15 because it was built just -poor. Felt very flimsy and fragile. The XPS line may be better, but I'm not sure.
I did run into two issue with my HDX16:
1. The keyboard had a lot of flex. I suspected something was stuck under the keyboard. I spent an hour removing the keyboard to find a wire that was stuck under it, causing the flex. Fixed that myself. Wished QC would have caught the problem.
2. Intel's website indicated my P7550 CPU was VT-capable, but it's actually not. This is likely more the fault of Intel than HP, but I figured I'd let you know about it. If you want Intel VT you're probably going to need to get the P8000 series CPUs. -

Yeah I can play all my games at 1920 x 1200 also but my frame rate drops to about 2 FPS with all settings set to max. 1200 res is higher and looks better on an external display thats capable of displaying that res. Thats as high as my GPU will go anyway.
As for overclocking, I am interested in that but that post doesnt aply to my card, I have GeForce 130M.. any overclock nfo on that GPU? -
Neither 9600M GT (DDR2) or GT 130M (about 17.4% faster than the former one) is meant for hardcore and heavy gaming...especially in maxed out graphics with new high-end games. Although CoD-WaW ain't that much of a hardware-squeezer...but still if you wanna play that with max settings @1920x1080 then the HDX may disappoint you. My 9600M GT is OCd too by much and I can play the latest Batman-Arkham Asylum with all settings maxed out and with 4x AA @1280x720 roughly maintaining the 30FPS margin. @1920x1080 it surely doesn't stand a chance. I haven't tried CoD5 on my lappy as I was done with it much ago. But as I said...it's a very less needy game. And as some of the users here are playing high-end games in their HDXs in highest graphics (e.g. optimustarzan , rageman), so you just may score on that too. First of all, try to get the new driver from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us. Of course the GT 130M can be OCd...just follow the guide that rageman provided. The procedure is kinda the same for all cards.
Good luck... -
Sure, use nVidia System Tools.
-
Has anyone heard when HP will be shipping the free Windows 7 disks?
-
PanzerHauptmann Notebook Consultant
Yeah. As an incentive to buy an HDX, after I bought it from Be$t Buy, I filled out some card to and scanned my proof of purchase, which would enable me to get Win7 free from HP. I just got a email notif. a few weeks ago emphatically saying "YOUR COPY OF WINDOWS 7 IS ONLY A FEW WEEKS AWAY!!! SO GET READY!!" (say it in a game-show type voice)..
Needless to say I was jumping for joy. But then I stopped jumping when I realized I already AM running win7, for i think months now. (RTM) -
PanzerHauptmann Notebook Consultant
hmph, thats strange, I remember fiddling around on Nvidia's website and I could've sworn 130M was superior to 9600. They both had + and -, but over all 130M had slightly better specs.
You know, that's strange people run their rez'z at 1080 and 720... I can run them but the gfx look grainy, screen isnt proportioned correctly, just look like plain hell. Both of them. Now 1280 x 800 or 960 looks great, as does 1920 x 1200 rather than 1080. Same goes for all games.
Batman Ark. Asy. at 720i even wth 4AA I wouldnt say thats much bragging rights, even squeezing out 30 FPS. Its ok thou.
So, what type of system would one need TO pull off 1920 x 1200 4AA, all settings maxed out... ?? You'd probably need a nuclear turbine to keep the GPU and CPU cool. lol -
That's what I said...GT130M is about 17.4% faster than the 9600M GT (DDR2).
I don't know about your resolution perspective...it varies naturally from person to person.
And lastly...to get the best out of today's demanding games...a Core2Extreme procy combined with a GTX 260M would be enough I bet...
-
PanzerHauptmann Notebook Consultant
My apologies I mis-read that first sentence Rex...
I don't really think it's perspective so to speak, its really the way it is... 1080 simply doesnt look as sharp or "natural" as 1200... same as 800 or 960 compared to 720... Is it just me? Anyone else notice this difference? When playing Wolfenstein for ie: at 720, gfx looks grainy, screen is off-centered, aspect ratio doesn't even look proper.. same goes to 1080.. but when set at 800, 960, or 1200, looks perfect. Im using Samsung SM T240HD widescreen, if that is of any importance.
cheers -
Anyone have any inkling as to what HP plans for the HDX 16? I've heard conflicting reports. Some say it will be discontinued others say HP has something special planned for the line early next year.

I finally replaced my wife's 2002 Dell8200,and was she pleased. I received this on 10/21,at around 10:00am.
HP HDX16t Premium Series Customizable Notebook PC
Vist Home PremiumSP1 (64BIT)
Intet Core 2 Duo Processor T9900(3.06 GHz,6 MB L2 Cashe,1066MHZ FSB)
4GB DDR2 System Memory
500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
1GB Nividia GeForce GT 130M
Lifghtscribe Blue-Ray ROM SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
Webcam+Fingerprint Reader
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
I started it up around 10:30am,and after setting up the Internet,Downloading 45 updates from Mickysoft and Norton I rebooted the machine. That was the last time I could get past the (blank) Blue log-on screen. To cut the night-mare short, after the Support session the conclusion was a bad Hard Drive. The good news is, they will send me a new Hard Drive so I can install all the program's myself and do the job I paid them to do in the first place! All I can say so far is the Support Help was great, and if I ever cross paths with the HP sob that took the kickback from the Chinese Hard Drive Manufacturer there will be a Hanging!!!

PanzerHauptmann Notebook Consultant
1. We almost have the same exact notebook.
2. Fingerprint reader you will soon realize you will have no need for; very cleaver "WOW" factor in purchasing. Well, I suppose your wife will have a good time showing her friends how it works. Thats really all I use it for.
3. Get rid o' Norton. Even if it is free for a year. There's about 4 better free for life security suites out there.
4. What exactly is the blank blue log-on screen? can u access ur BIOS? try booting from CD? use restore option? could just be bad install of some prog.
Maybe.
good luck. -
I see some folks have upgraded and I have the new drivers link. Looks like clean install is the way to go (actually I have to since I have vista ultimate on it and am going to Win 7 professional).
Any advice? Any drivers NOT available? Did you have to download and install them or does WIN 7 find most of them for you?
Before I jump in, just looking for any advice from anyone who took the plunge already. tks -
PanzerHauptmann Notebook Consultant
I bought my HDX 16t with Vista, obviously, and upgraded to win7 RTM months ago... I specifically did UPGRADE, not clean install. There are many driver components, devices, (ie fingerprint reader, internal devices such as WifI adapter, keyboard driver, etc etc,). These are notebook-specific, if u will, unlike some generic desktops. Win7 will simply port the drivers over. There might be a few you will need to upgrade or update manually, but u should know how to do that from this forum or HP's website, depending upon the drivers u will need. (especially win-7 compatible ones)
I have all my Win7 settings on MAX (Aero, background effects, etc.) and it runs like a charm, much better than Vista. the search feature is much improved, and everythhing just seems to run seemlessly. You may encounter some program or game compatiblity issues here and there, but 90% of the time you just change setting to Vista or XP compatiblity option and it should work fine.. Love the built-in disk partition manager as well.
Anyway, I used UPGRADE and works like a charm to this day. All device drivers running smoothly. Quite amazed really, thought Id run into some moderate to severe issue by now. Remember, there might be thousands of theorys out confirming it's better to do clean install rather than upgrade. Take it from me, I've actually experienced it so I have first hand experience, and no theoretical idea could ever outweigh that.
I hope this helps, I tried to be as expalinatory as possible without writing a novel. But if u should have any more questions I'd be glad to asnwer them for you, just shoot me a PM whenever... best of luck! -
The Hard Drive failed the On-board Disk Check. So I am waiting for the new drive from Fed-Ex. And I agree on the Fingerprint reader,as I was not given the option of leaving it out. So I will leave it turned off. We live up in the Mountain's so the "WOW" factor dosen't really apply. I do have a question about Hard Drive Partitions. When I had it up and running the disk seemed to be Partitioned in half. The seconed half seemed to be almost full. Would that be the "Back up utility" from HP,and if so why would I need to burn up all that Hard Drive space if I can't use it anyway! Have a good day KC
-
Yeah, I recommend the new Microsoft Security Essentialas. It's the new free virus, spyware/adware real-time protection. Takes up like no memory. I can't even tell it's running.
-
For those interested in Overclocking their Video Cards, there are now three helpful threads on how to do it using three different programs.
I am sure if you have any questions there are plenty of people there to help you out as well.
Enjoy!

Anyone get XP Mode/Virtual PC to work on this? It says my CPU doesn't support virtualization.
-
You may have to go into the BIOS and enable Virtualization.
-
PanzerHauptmann Notebook Consultant
Whats virtualization? kinda like a virtual-reality?
Anyway, was at best buy yesterday and HP rep came up to me and we began talking... He informed me the HDX series has been discontinured by HP... now all of u may know this but I didnt... they got some new fancy laptop, comes stock with 6 gb ram, 1080 display, QUAD CORE processor, with eight processing panels or something liek that, he demonstrated.. very impressive... I fee llike i have a POS now lol jk.. well maybe a lil... -
PanzerHauptmann Notebook Consultant
I dont get it; are u saying that mountain people wouldn't be impressed if they saw/used a fingerprint scanner?
I think they would downright love it!!!u have much to learn about mountain people, Danielson. =) -
There's no setting in my BIOS for virtualization.
-
Sure there is.
Here is a e-mail I sent to a friend. Not trying to dumb you down, but this is the best way to explain it.
Okay, so yeah just checked and what you do is, reboot and as soon as you see the black screen w/ text on it hit the ESC key. Then choose BIOS which is F10. Then once in there you move around with the arrow keys. Move right to the System Configuration and then down to the box Virtuialzation Technology, press ENTER, choose ENABLE, then repeat process for FAN ALWAYS ON. Although, Fan Always On is probably already enabled so you won't have to change that.
Then move over to Exit and choose Exit Saving Changes! Then you're done. The computer will boot up Windows as normal! -
I looked and there is no option for Virtualization Technology. Fan on is there but Virtual is not.
-
Interesting. What processor do you have? What version of BIOS?
-
Current BIOS which was posted in the driver thread.
Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.20 GHz -
Wow. Beyond me. I've never seen it not be an option on the HDX line.
Learn something new everyday I suppose. -
Sorry man, T6600 doesn't support VT.

Hey guys, i just installed Windows7. did a clean install.
I can't find out how to download the OEM version of Cyberlink DVD Suite that came preinstalled on my machine (HP HDX 16t). Same for HP HealthCheck.
I'd appreciate your help -
I am having some problems with my hdx16t. the two issues are that my volume down touch button turns off wifi instead of lowering the volume. i have googled this issue and some people have had other issues with the volume controls also. i have tried the fixes that people posted such as new drivers, the unplug everything and let power drain out, and reinstall drivers to no avail. my other issue is that my display resolution keeps changing to that of team fortress 2. the display resolution is changed each time i open the lid back up after closing it or when i restart the computer after i have played tf2. can anybody help?
-
I had the resolution problem when I was using Vista 64, and I think reinstalling the video card driver fixes it.
...then again, after the resolution switching problem started, my 18 started BSoDing whenever I closed the lid or unplugged my Wireless mouse receiver. It ended up corrupting itself to where Windows would not start in any mode, and I had to do a System recovery from the DVD's.
Still, try reinstalling the drivers first. -
Has anyone experienced a clicking noise when your Laptop lid is closed but left on? Mine clicks about once a second. This may have already been posted but my search has turned up nothing. HDX16
-
I have that too moop, I'm sure there is a permanent way to fix it, but the only method i know of is to mute the computer before you close the lid
-
Have the same issue as well and have always just muted it.
-
In decision making mode for a new laptop. I checked out a HDX16 in-store at the weekend and found that the "media touch buttons" did not behave consistently ie. volume controls. Sometimes I'd touch the sensor and the volume would click up way for way longer than I intended. On other occasions it wouldn't work at all.
Is this a normal issue for the HDX media control touch-sensitive panel, or is it down to an overworked poorly configured model in a retail store? -
I got two quick questions:
The volume control on the touch pad makes a clicking sound when changing the volume, it tends to lag, is there a way to turn that sound off and allow just the onscreen visual to stay?
Does anyone know where to find the best screen protector for this laptop. I am having trouble finding a thin plastic 16in widescreen and even better if it were meant for this laptop.
Thanks -
I know that the HDX18 has been scrapped, but the HDX16T is currently still available.
-
Patience is a virtue. To have a Mobile Quad-Core version would have been well worth the wait.
I, too am kicking myself- even though I know not only did I get a great deal, but i love this notebook.
-
Anyone have luck with a docking station that works WELL ?
I've been looking for one that also has dual monitor out support?
The ones I have come across have had horrible reviews.
Thanks! -
Hello all:
Thought I would let those of you know just in case you didn't, HP and Microsoft will be having an experts day where you can ask questions on there boards. There will be over 65 experts taking place that you can ask questions regarding Windows 7, HP and misc. stuff related thereto.
Nov. 5, 6, Dec. 1 and 16 I believe is when they will repeat this is I read correctly.
CHECK IT OUT HERE -
There's actually a very easy way to do this. Just go to BIOS-->System Configuration and then disable "Button Sounds" there. And no more annoying clicking sounds while changing volume...
