Hi everybody. I am new to this site and a relatively new HDX16T owner (Got it beginning of oct). I have a couple of questions.

    1) How do I protect my screen? Should I use a screen protector? Im worried about dust getting in and I heard alot of people had their screen get scratched from closing it after a few months.

    2) I play games on my hdx. Should I get a fan and if so which one would you guys recommend?

    3) What do you guys think of HPs extended warranty? Its expensive but is it worth it?

    4) Is there anyway I can swap out my dvd drive for a blu ray drive?

    5) What better a clean install of Windows 7 or a upgrade install? Also if I back up my current files from vista will the backup file open up in 7?

    Thanks for the help.

Hi I have an HDX16 1358CA. I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate, and now my quick launch buttons don't work. Only WiFi and Mute works. volume adjust normally has a screen that pops up indicating volume level, treble, and bass, but that doesn't show up. Only play/pause and stop works, the next/forward track doesn't work, also the eject touch button doesn't work. I already installed the software needed and of course got all my drivers. I called HP Support and they suggested I do a BIOS upgrade. Did that, no cigar. Any suggestions or solutions?

Rageman, the guide you posted did not work for me. I still can't get the display for the volume control/bass-treble control and also, my eject button doesn't work.

EDIT: Sorry, it did work. Note to everyone, Patience is a virtue. My mistake, it just takes a bit of time for whatever it is to load. I tried it in my own misery and it worked.

    Hi,
I've started to experience a problem recently. When under load, the machine is getting too hot and is either throttling the GPU or CPU, making the program (game) i'm using lag. What can I do?

Edit: CPU temp goes to 70C and GPU goes to 80C

Hey everyone. I currently have a DVD rw. I want to upgrade it to a blu-ray dvd burner. How do I find one that could fit the hdx? Also if I install it will that void the warranty? Thanks.

New HDX16t owner here. Just did a clean install of Windows 7 from the upgrade disk and everything seems to work fine, except for one unknown device in the Device Manager:

    "on Intel(r) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2919"

I tried reinstalling the latest Intel chipset driver with the "-overall" option, but am getting the following error:
"Your computer does not meet minimum requirements for installing this software".

Anybody run into something like that?

UPDATE: Fixed by installing ENE CIR Receiver driver. Still not sure why I'm getting the chipset driver error (only when using "-overall" flag).

    Hey everybody,
As other have mentioned before, i cannot play blurays on my HDX16t since i clean installed windows 7 home premium. MediaSmart DVD just won't play them, latest version or not.
What are you guys doing to play Blurays on your PCs? I downloaded zoomplayer, but it won't play my blurays giving me the following error:

    "Unable to play [00136.M2TS]
This may be dur to a corrupt file, missing filters, filter conflicts, or hardware related issues."

N.B: i already downloaded and installed all the video codecs recommended by the player.

I would appreciate all your comments.

To help improve battery life hp.com says to slow down the speed of the processor. In windows 7 how do you do this? Also since upgrading to win7 my remote no longer works... any solutions for this?

You can set the Processor's speed in percentages in the Advanced Power Options config page. As for the remote, the Receiver's drivers need to be installed.

I am running win7 ultimate for a while now, and have absolutely no issues running blu ray on any media player. You may want to try VLC media player, and download ALL the filters, plugins, codecs, etc. Does your comp have a built-in blu ray drive, or is this an external? I have a sony external blu ray burner, and I believe I used WMP to play the blu ray it came with.

I think you need to install this driver.

    ENE CIR Receiver

    Important Information

    * Please uninstall all previous versions of the ENE CIR Receiver driver first before installing the newest version!
    * A system restart is recommended after the installation process.

I've had my system for exactly a year to date. Writing a full review.

Within 3 months of having unit the "touch" quick launch buttons that's located above the F row keys went haywire. The volume/tremble/bass level box kept taking focus on my screen even when I wasn't even touching the keyboard or the area. The wi-fi button would also go on and off spontaneously which would make me lose my connection.

This is known and widely reported issue to the HDX16. I had to send it in and they fixed the issue. However a year later when I updated the quick launch button, it started going crazy again. I had to uninstall the update and it has since been working fine.

Exactly 1 year to date of purchase the battery has failed. Whenever I would run the unity with only the battery it would abruptly shut off. Not a power down, but a shut down. After going through numerous of troubleshooting steps with the Tech Support I was told that I needed to replace the battery. Even though the Battery Check utility that comes with the system told me the battery was good.

After going back and forth with tech support I was told to download a Support Pack. After installing this, I ran the Battery Check utility again and received a "Replace" status check.

I got a extrememly cheap discount on Windows 7 from my school. After upgrading the unit to Windows 7 it would run extremely hot whenever I had the AC cord and battery connected at the same time. I downgraded back to Vista and it started working normal again.

Overall this has been a very good PC. I'm still satisfied with my purchase despite all the things mentioned above.

    Hi guys.

I have a few questions, and this thread is too long for me to find answers!

Firstly, I got the HDX16 back in September, and it has caused me no end of problems. The main problems were:

-The left and right tabs didn't work, leaving me with the tap on the touch pad being the only way to click. Also the right-click and drag didn't work on the touch pad.

-The HP Media Centre buttons (with the volume etc) above the F-keys were VERY unresponsive

-The Windows Explorer regularly crashed. Also, for the hi-spec it has, the laptop was surprisingly slow

So I sent it back to be repaired under the warranty, and it arrives back pretty soon. Basically what should I do to avoid any more problems?

-Should I get rid of the bloatware? If so any advice on how and what to get rid of?

-Any drivers you recommend I install?

-Basically how can I optimize my HDX? I'm an architecture student and use it for archi software such as Autocad, 3DS Max and Photoshop.

Any answers/links to threads that would be useful would be much appreciated. Also, has anyone else had the same problems I experienced?

    Thanks in advance,
    Christian.

I bought ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 3, works great. I think the issue is the underlying software in HP MediaSmart is Cyberlink 7, which is not WIN7 compatible. I called HP, they said they cant help me since they don't support an OS other than what I bought. They did send me a few dozen downloads for MediaSmart to try, nothing worked so I gave up an ordered TotalMedia, love it. works great.

Has anyone tried dual monitors with the hdx16?

I recently purchased a HP HDX16 and I was wondering how much strain would a dual monitor confguration give me, or if overheating will be an issue.

    Windows 7, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.20GHz, ~2.2GHz 4096MB RAM
    DirectX 11
    NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    Current Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)

If possible I'd like to run the second monitor in 1920 x 1080 too and I plan to buy a 16" screen as well. Has anyone tried it?

So, after lots of digging around at HP and here, am I right in thinking there is no true fix to the volume/treble/base mess up and HP Tone Control etc. I've seen some posts here that indicate if I do a clean install of Win 7, it should go away, but don't see where anyone has posted that YES it fixes that little problem.

is .32 the latest/best bios for the HDX16T?

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 on my HDX 16 and have been using an external monitor. I am now wanting to go with a dual monitor using the external monitor as primary.

When I do this my laptop screen does not display from edge to edge. Is there a solution?

I have the dreaded sound crackling issue with my 16T. The sound does not crackle when I play music via iTunes, but seems to when I watch flash movies embedded in web pages and YouTube. Also, I have FlashGet download manager installed on my system, and when I have active downloads and try to play music via iTunes, the sound will then crackle. Soon as I paused the download, sound is smooth. I've had the computer for barely 2 months and it has already started this crap!

I think it got answered in the HDX18 thread, but yeah, the backlit is actually in the keyboard and you have 2 connectors on the backlit keyboards that hook to the System Board unlike the regular keyboards that only use one connection. The second connection on the backlit is of course the power connector to the light inside the keyboard.

FYI, the keys have transparent paint (best way to say it) and so the light goes through the letters only on each key. The rest of the key is the regular Silver color!!

    It's SOOO COOOLLL!!! :p

    You're fine,
I am running at 1920x1080p res external monitor and ran games with high setting like Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2...

    Well overclocked..

To be honest, i recommended with one screen on only. Cuz it will eventually lags with multiple monitor on... It's not like you have a SLI card in your lappy.

I've seen them on Ebay before, but right now it seems that they only have Spanish model. I've seen them elsewhere online as replacement parts but they were more expensive. From what I've heard they require quite a bit of disassembly with some fragile parts so it is a delicate operation to change one out.

I know, I'm only finding the spanish models, or some really pricey one from some shady people. I'd have no problem installing it, this laptop is really easy to take apart, I've had it apart a couple of times to tighten the screen and see if I could change out the fan.

I haven't posted here in a while but I just want to say I took a can of Endust Duster air spray and blew directly on the fan vents underneath the laptop and it dramatically improved GPU temperatures. I was averaging 60 - 70c while surfing and doing small tasks and now it hasn't gotten above 44. CPU temps also improved. I would recommend everyone that has owned the laptop for a while to use air spray (for electronics) on the vents to remove dust, increase airflow and increase the lifetime of your investment. Of course you can take other measures like opening the laptop and cleaning the insides but I prefer not to take that route and seeing that this worked I'm a happy camper!

The brand is Endust and I used the following product: Endust Air Duster. As far as the vents, I blew on all three vents on the left/bottom side of the laptop. I kept blowing until I saw no more dust blown off. I hope that helps.

    Hey guys,

I have connected my HDX 16t to an external monitor. Everything works fine BUT, I am unable to get the BIOS settings screen to display on my external monitor. THe external monitor shows up the display ONLY after windows boots up.

However, the BIOS screen is accessible on my friends laptop (HP DV6000) when I connect to my monitor.

What might be causing the issue? Is it BIOS firmware? or something else? Please let me know soon.

Can anyone tell me if the new 1TB SATA 2.5 inch hard drives from Seagate or Western Digital will fit my HDX 16 or HDX 18? Running out of drive space with all the photos/music/movies/games that I have on them now. Love all my HP machines!!!

If they're 9.5mm height drives, they'll work fine, but I don't think they are.

    hello guys,

The number 3 key on my HDX16's keyboard fell off... Apparently the key retainers broke and although I ordered some new ones from www.individualkeys.com, they don't fit. Could anyone help me find the proper ones? Its from the old keyboard, with no backlight...

And this is what i ordered and didn't fit: HP Pavilion Laptop Key Retainer Clip (NP 3, HC38).

    Thanks

    Hi :)
I have got problems on my HDX16 1000EO since i installed Windows 7 Ultimate on it. Neither the internal wlan- nor ethernet-card are detected by the computer. Installing drivers does not make it work. Is this a common problem and is there any solution to it?

EDIT: Solution: After 5 hours of windows-installing/recovering later, i inserted the computers (empty) battery, and it worked. :/

Hi all! I've had my HDX-16 for almost a year now and am starting to notice some things that bother me. Wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this and if HP helped at all.

My screen has some spots that have been scratched. This is from the MediaSmart bar now lying down flat but a few little bumps. It lines up perfectly with the screen where the marks are when it is shut. Anyone know if they'll replace the screen and replace the bar with a flat one so this doesn't happen? I just hate having those spots, there is one large on (about the size of a penny) and a few other smaller ones that bother me when I'm trying to use the full screen for something.

Also, I have the backlit keyboard. Some of the keys the silver coating is rubbing off making the letters unreadable just looking like blobs (worst ones are A and S). Also the left click button for the touchpad as well as some of the touchpad is wearing off too. I hope they'll replace that too.

Just thought I'd see if anyone else here had anything similar and what the results were before I come in.
