Given what you just wrote, i'd stick by what you said earlier and buy it configured with what you want. It's too expensive to monkey around with if you don't know what you're doing. It's easy for some ("easy as plugging in a USB drive"), but for others, it might as well be rocket science. You'll just wind up frustrated and regretting the whole experience.

In addition to this, I have one more question.

Does the RF receiver on the HDX16 support RF mice and keyboards such as the Logitech MX wireless series? I lost the stock Logitech receiver :(

Having said that, though- there are things called tutorials on the internet. I'm not sayin you'll learn how to do everything overnight- but what i am saying is that if you do want to learn, there's a way. That way- in the future, if you do want to save some hard earned cash, and get a little hands-on experience at the same time, you can install RAM and hard drives yourself.

    Just my two cents...

Does anyone out there care to answer my question?

I got mine recently, and the right-click on the pad doesn't work right out of the box. I talked to technical support and sales rep, it's useless and such a pain.
Wondering if anyone have their system free of defective? Does a lot of people keep this system?
It's a nice looking system but the performance is crappy. I planning to use this for at least 3 years. I'm worried that it won't hold up. I'm debating between returning and replacing.

PM's and posts with this particular user in the past has made it obvious they have no desire to tinker with hardware or even have it installed by someone knowledgable in order to save money....it's "from the factory" or not at all...which is fine...just with no experience and what is seemingly a fear to try, they're better off getting it factory installed.

For something to not work right after you've just taken it out of the box- that's not cool. Definitely recommed at least exchanging it- returning it and getting a different laptop altogether is up to you.

Mine works just fine- especially after getting rid of all the trialware and all that good stuff. No problems over here.

If you don't think the performance is good- you may want to look into getting another laptop- no, strike that- you will want to getting a new one, since you want to keep it for a good while.

It's not like I'm dumb or something. I can do it. I just would rather not do it with THIS device.

Maybe down the line I can buy a smaller less expensive laptop and try it out. However I would not feel comfortable doing it for the first time with this laptop.

I'm a fast learner and I usually get things done right after a couple of tries.

I've been using the HDX16 for a few days now, and I love it!

Out of the box, my initial thoughts were the quality finish, solid build quality, sturdy latchless hinge, huge sharp shiny screen, and rather stylish, silver colors, lighting, etc. There were some spots of glue that looked like scrapes to me, but I was able to scrub them off with my fingernail.

Yes, it's a fingerprint magnet. If you care, you can polish it with the included slip cloth, although I wouldn't bother covering the HDX with the slip cover before putting it in my case. The finish is resiliant enough from light scrapes.

The screen is reflective. As I speak, in a lightly lighted room, I see no reflection at all, but sun light, or a bright room will change that. I'm not bothered by it personally. The "infinity" frame is nothing to boast about. It's basically an unrecessed screen - the frame still exists, but the screen sits on top of it. I can't even tell the difference right now, but in a brightly lit room or outside it adds to the sleek style. The screen has a relatively wide viewing angle as well, and vertically is much better than my previous laptop.

The first thing I did was remove the bloatware. Everything besides HP DVD, the web cam, and fingerprint sensor. I removed the included sound driver and replaced it with realtek HD. I lost the treble/bass adjustment on the media controls, but volume/mute still work. Havent played a movie yet but I'm sure the stop/play/pause work with HP DVD. The fingerprint sensor is quite accurate, my old laptop I can't say the same. I havent missed a swipe yet, and makes log in fast and secure.

Speed! The HDX is fast. My old lap top has a 1.66 duo from the first duo chip set, but integrated graphics, and half the RAM. The HDX is a significant boost for me, opening up pc gaming, and I have been enjoying STALKER SoC and Bioshock. I can't max them out at 1080p or anything, but the performance at 720p is more than acceptable, with room to push higher res, AF, AA, etc. Looking forward to trying FC2, FO3, and RA3!

I play on a Zalman NC2000. Even while gaming, the HDX remains quite "cool" on the cooler, the touchpad, keys, palmrest don't become hot. It's important to keep the HDX on a flat surface if you're loading the CPU and not using a cooler. However, just browsing the net and playing some music on my bed for an hour or two, with no cooler on high performance (0-100% proc scaling and max brightness), the HDX was only warm, most warm at the rear, where you don't make any hand contact.

My only issue with the HDX is the HDD performance, 5400RPM is a large bottleneck for such a fast computer. I will probably upgrade to an SSD as prices continue to fall. HP should offer a 7200 from the factory if they consider the HDX their top of the line performance series...

That said, I still love it, and will surely keep it if remains solid the next 2 weeks.

Okay- that's cool, all I'm sayin is that it doesn't hurt to at least learn a little bit 'bout the process. Hell- a few years ago- I didn't want to touch the stuff in my desktop!! :p But then a friend of mine showed me how relatively easy it is to buy parts for a desktop and put them together, and here I am a few years later- not necessarily a master, but at least I have some knowledge and can do it- both on a desktop and a laptop.

But it's cool- no problem. Actually- that's good. Don't learn- gives us techy guys a job!!! :D hahaha

No one called you dumb...I simply stated it seemed you didn't want to tinker with whatever computer you finally decide to buy, based on conversations we've had privately and publicly, and now confirmed by your statement that you'd rather not mess with "THIS device"...just trying to save a bunch of people a bunch of posts trying to coax you into doing something you obviously don't have a desire to do! That's all!

I will buy this laptop. Times are tough and the economy is not exactly in stellar condition. I'll spend the money when I'm **** well ready and not a minute before just so I can feel "cool" and join the crowd.

By the looks of it I'm not the only one who is yet to pull the trigger on either model.

And a smart consumer does his research before he buys an item. Since I"m configuring this on HP's website and it was suggested that I might want to upgrade the RAM myself I decided to look into it.

All true. Just seems the longer one waits, the more the chances the good deals disappear (like underpriced QUAD CORE's, and 20% cashback promo's, etc...).

Thanks. Unfortunately, I got a little trigger happy with the Revo and while removing the HP Total Care, I accidentally deleted some needed files. My sidebar stopped working correctly and when I went back to a restore point from a few hours earlier, internet connectivity was lost both wired and unwired. I then restored to the first user boot and I got the internet back, but am still seeing some weird issues. For example the Norton stuff isn't running and appears to be off of the system yet its still appears in the program list and can't be uninstalled. I haven't played with it a lot in this state yet (it was late), but there are other quirks as well.

I wish I could just start over so I ordered the Vista recovery CDs from HP. I assume this won't include all of the drivers though. Anyone have any advice on how best to handle this?

Why couldn't you just use the RESTORE FUNCTION built into all HP laptops and start over and uninstall things more carefully this time around. I thought that Vista Disk you get is the same as what is backed up in the Restore Partition?

jsh, as kewlkat stated, there is a restore partition stored in HDD. Just restore from that, and it's highly suggested you burn your own restore disks. It should be first priority when receiving a laptop without restore disks already. That way if any problems arise, you can always restore. Sorry to hear that you have to go through that whole process. I myself went through many system restores back then, but I found that everything was working when HP software was uninstalled. Really, all you need mostly is the drivers, but some other software too. The HP software you don't need unless its things like quicktouch or quickplay... don't remember the names if they contained HP on them.

If you decide its too tedious, maybe leaving the HP software there would be better. They can be helpful in updating drivers or things like that, but they aren't needed, as you can manually update.

    - 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - [For BrightView Infinity Display] Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

for $1535.93 (actually, for $39 less as my shipping was refunded due to waiting two extra days for it). I've been playing with it for a week now and I love it! This is a great little lappy.

Anyone have any recommended express card slot upgrade?

Been using my HDX16t last few days.

    I would say:

    1. 2GB RAM is not enough for my usage. I already ordered a 4GB set for my 64-bit Vista

    2. I'm using Targus Podium, he headphone jack in the front of the laptop is incovenience and fragile if you set your laptop on a tilted position. Also some laptop cooler like Zalman NC2000 may block those jack.

    3. The CPU P7350 obviously needs to be upgraded (just wait for service manual download or assembly guide :D)

    4. The build quality is just slightly better than Gateway P6831fx.

    5. I have yet to encounter any heat issues. My GPU only goes to 6xC when gaming.

There's an included RF receiver? I don't believe there is. There's an iR receiver for the remote control. That would not support mice (iR mice? eek!).

I believe they can only take DDR2. Also, hard drives are not DDR-anythng. RAM/memory is DDR, Hard Drives are listed by capacity (200GB or whatever) and spindle speed (5400rpm, 7200rpm). Which are you actually talking about replacing?

Both are easy replacements. A hard drive would indeed require an OS install (or copy from your existing drive). A memory install/upgrade would not.

Ok I don't believe any websites provide the drivers.

Can anybody be kindly enough to package the whole SWsetup folder and send it to me some how? I wonder how big is it... Already got the sound and graphics driver, but still need the fingerprint reader, remote, monitor (?) and SM Bus drivers.

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

It's pretty big- it's over 2 GBs worth- mainly because the folder also includes all the trialware and stuff. I don't believe it's illegal to send it, so I would be willing to give it to you- I just don't know how I would send it, since most e-mails (I don't think) let you send something that big. I'll see if I can tone down the size, and upload it to a file-sharing site, like rapidshare or something. Let me know

Just ordered a HDX16t, but didn't notice it didn't include bluetooth until after completing the purchase.

Is it as simple as ordering the 483113-001 bluetooth module from HP and installing it? Is there a cheaper option?

Would it have been combined with the 5100AGN on one card if I had ordered it already included? It's not going to use the extra mini-pci everyone talks about, is it?

And if not, can I put an internal WWAN/GPS card in that mini-pci slot? If so, any recommendations on which one to get? Does it have to be HP?

    Enough questions?

Thanks for the advice Chango. I will try it when I get home. To restore from that partition do I go into the setup menu while booting?

Maybe it is obvious to everyone, but if anyone else is having issues with the Norton Removal Tool (as I was), it worked well when I booted to safe mode and then ran it.

    Cheers.

Yeah, when you power up, immediately press the F11 key to get to the HP recovery partition of the HDD. Just go through it and let it recover itself. Your welcome jsh.

I'd also like to know the answer to the bluetooth questions, as my HDX16t does not have it.

I can answer the question about the WWAN card...you cannot put one in, because, unlike almost all Dell notebooks HP decided to save a few dollars and not include the wiring needed to connect a WWAN to antennas in the lid. Too bad...

    @bckncook & @lancorp
I ordered my hdx with 5100AGN and Bluetooth. The second slot (next to HDD) is still open. I think that is mainly used for TV-Tuner. I'm basing it on the HDX (Old) Service Manual. Has anyone found the new manual yet???
I was thinking about using it with the EEE PC SSD option to have it as OS partition, but the speeds are too slow. 20MB/s (not worth 100 dollars for 30GB). I have a 4GB SD Card which stays in the slot all the time, and its the SanDisk Extreme III (20MB/s).

Second option was WiMAX as its suppose to be coming to Chicago area soon. But I don't know if there are mini-PCI-ex cards available. Haven't searched at all for those yet.
For anyone looking for Drivers; I've extracted 64-bit onlydrivers which were in the original hard drive. It's about 230MB. I'm willing to upload them. I will do so in next few hours (hopefully) and post back the link.

I will also post Wallpapers as I saw someone asking for them.

Is the TV tuner internal or is it a card that sticks out of the side?

    cheers

Internal. It goes into the mini PCI-Ex. slot near HDD, and antenna wire goes from there to the small round hole on right side by DVD/BD Drive.

Regarding the bluetooth, the part number I mentioned is listed as the official replacement card for the HDX 16, so maybe that means it isn't combined with the 5100. But if it's not, the bluetooth module must mount somewhere that would require removing the whole base, not just the smaller quick access panel.

And while the base is off, does anyone know if you could buy WWAN antenna wires (if anythinf special) and route them internally around the edges of the laptop base? I assume the reception might not be quite as good as if they went to the lid, but would it be good enough? Do the antenna wires even matter for the WWAN card's GPS receiver's reception?

Let's talk battery life...what are you people with HDX16t's seeing as an average battery life? I have my Vista set on BALANCED, and with wifi disabled, and screen brightness on high, I'm averaging about 2 hours. Not very good in my opinion. I thought this Centrino2 chipset was supposed to help the battery life?

Also, I notice my battery indicator never shows an estimated time left, only a percentage. Is everyone else's the same way?

    Thanks.

Don't know if you find your drivers or not.
I reinstalled Vista and I found all drivers at HP website.
You have to look for different laptop models. The one I looked at is DV5t and Vista 64-bit drivers.

    You can get:
    1. 9600M GT driver(I mod my own graphic driver so I don't use this)
    2. IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC Driver
    3. Quick Launch buttons/HP QuickTouch Software
    4. ENE CIR Receiver Driver (for the little remote control)
    5. Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver
    6. Intel PRO/Wireless driver
    7. Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller Driver
    8. JMicron Card Reader Driver
    9. Essential System Updates for Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
    10. Intel Chipset Installation Utility for ICH9 for Microsoft Windows Vista
    11. Cyberlink YouCam Software

Thanks for the info...I guess I'm not too far off! What about your battery gauge? Does it show estimated time remaining, or only a percentage?

    Thanks!

Hey guys... after reading the prior posts, hope everyone is ready to keep contributing to the forum - more perople=more opinions=better choices can be made. I finally dived in and got the hdx16t with the rebate and the 20% off live.com cashback deal. I also got the TV tuner.

Does anyone have a TV tuner in their hdx16t? and if so, could you describe its performance and quality (is it just like the ones in the dv5t, etc)? Just want to make sure that I made the right choice for the tuner.

*EDIT: Also, I just found a cool thing with the hp website... the intro to the hp.com wesbite was down (which I think was what the guy in the hdx18t forum wrote) and the reason could be a nostagia of the HDX20 days. Check it out! :)

LIVE.com deals aren't supposed to stack. Maybe you will get lucky.

I thought it just wouldn't stack with coupons... but I read somewhere that the "instant rebate" was honored and could be used with the 20% off.

Yeah, that is funny how HP decided to put the HDX20 on their home page! I noted that in the HDX forum, too, when I first saw it! (maybe they are bringing it back!)

Congrat's on getting an HDX16t! I bet you got a good price, too, with the new pricing! :D

live.com cashback doesn't work with other discounts and coupons, according to the Terms of Service, but I called and since it's not a coupon code, and ALL units come with it (i.e, you can't get it without the Instant rebate), it's more considered a sale price, and MS support said it won't be a problem.

I think it's just meant to not stack with a 10% HP coupon or such.

64 bit, unless you utilize old 16 bit software. 64 bit is the future.

I'd start with Vista 64. Your graphic work will love the extra memory that can be addressed (if installed), and there is a bit of a speed increase in going to 64-bit. Games, on the other hand, mostly work, but you may run into issues.

Check out start64.com and see if any info there helps you make a decision.

Also, I remember seeing on HP Vista32 and Vista64 recovery DVD sets...I suppose you could buy your HDX with 64 bit and then get the 32 bit recovery DVD set ($15, if I remember correctly), and reload to 32 bit should you need to...

lancorp, I believe the CD Keys for 32-bit and 64-bit are different, so no I don't think that'd work.

My experience with both Microsoft's MSDN and Technet keys and Dell's OEM keys says otherwise. MSDN and Technet has the same Vista key for x86 and x64 DVD's and Dell has shipped me free OEM Vista64 DVD's and the keycode from the bottom of my COA sticker that shipped as 32 bit worked just fine.

I can't vouch for every version of Vista, but I believe I've read elsewhere that the keycode is the same...
