Hi!
My husband bought a 1033CL as a 2nd laptop for work because it is so portable and it's been working great for him. We are definitely not techies and the only thing we have added is an external optical drive and microsoft office. We are considering upgrading to 2gb of RAM but it doesn't seem necessary at this point.
I'm going to get one of these as my "ultra-portable" laptop (I also have a tx2510) but I was wondering if the 1030NR version from Best Buy is any different because it is currently on sale for $399 vs $449 for the 1033CL.
Also, would the Mini be able to handle Outlook as well as BlackBerry Desktop Manager software? I would want to put those on my machine so I could sync my BlackBerry.
Any opinions or suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I have a question for other HP 1030nr owners...
What is a good basic compatible dvd writer? I was looking at the LG GSA-E50L, but noticed that it required 20gb free hard drive space! I actually have another computer with DVD burner, etc. - so I'm really looking for something very basic to load programs. However, if I can obtain a DVD writer for a good price that works with the HP, I'll definitely be game.
Thanks for the posts - great forum! -
HDD Space requirements should be anywhere from 5-10MB at MOST for the drivers. Then the programs like NERO would require quite a bit of space. I would recommend IMGBURN. It's a small program and does a lot of burning. Files/Folders to Disc, Image to Disc, Disc to Image and so forth. -
So, if I understand correctly, I can get just about any type of CD/DVD writer/reader - correct? And the "free hard drive" requirement is simply for storing the "writer/reader" software & for storing the video images before burning.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to which one works best with the 1030nr?
Startech?
LG?
HP? (is there one external drive that HP recommends for this machine?)
Again, thank you. -
Hi all, my first time to post here.
I installed cpuz on my mini 1001TU and noticed the core speed is somehow throttling. The multiplier jumps between 6, 8, 10 and 12 which then results to the core speed changing from arround 800MHz to 1.6GHz. When the mini is idle, it stays at 800MHz and when I'm playing Frozen Throne goes to 1.6Ghz. Does the mini 1000 series (or all intel atoms for that matter) have throttling built in to it. I was originally looking at underclocking the mini for longer battery life but i can't find an application yet that has been proven to do this for the mini 1000. -
Anyone find they are having audio issues on their 1030mini. I cant get any bass response from the external audio.
HP tech is a waste of time and said to just reinstall the OS.
I have read on other forums that this audio card has this issue on other machines.
So before I return this thing to BestBuy and buy a different brand. Anyone else having the same issues -
^ haven't noticed any audio issues so far. how exactly do you describe the bass issues maybe i can test it out later
-
I had a similar experience before I upgraded the audio driver. Here's the link to the discussion on another forum with the suggested fix:

Hi, I bought 1035NR from Future Shop in Canada Ontraio.
First one I took had a thick dust in the panel so i had to change it.
Then the second one I have right now is having some gradient problem.
It appears when its black to white gradient images.
I can see some ditherings, which appears in 6-bit panels.
For example, if I look at some gray backgrounds, images and photo,
few ditherings appears.
Can anyone goto http://www.getdota.com/ and look at the backgrounds,
and the image on left and see some ditherings?
Like.. few dots mixed up (white and grays).
edit: also if I google "LCD TEST" and do the gradient test from the web site,
I can see layered(also visible dithering) gradient from black to white... is this defected LED? -
My mini 1001TU came pre-installed with MS Works but after an attempt to reinstall XP on it, i can't seem to find the installer for MS Works. CAn anyone verify if their recovery disks include MS Works in it?

Good day,
I am keen on buying the HP Mini, but i can only see it on the website and not on display at any shops. The screen resolution is 1024x600, is it good? I use this Mini on my travels and will now and then use it for video downloaded from my Video Camera. Cheers.

Just received a 1010NR as a Valentine's gift from my wife. It was on the list of netbooks I was looking at and they had dropped the price on it to $299 at Staples so she went ahead and picked one up for me. It's certainly one of the classiest looking netbooks out there and it seems reasonably sturdy, although as I'm sure has already been mentioned, boy is this thing a fingerprint magnet. Good thing they include a microfiber cloth.
So far I think this is going to suit my mobile needs perfectly. It only has the 8GB SSD, so I put in the included 2GB Micro Drive (which appears to be nothing more than a Transcend Jetflash 3 with a caddy) for my office docs and an 8GB SDHC to hold my multimedia files. My needs are extremely basic so I believe it will suffice for some time although I do plan to upgrade the SSD when Windows 7 rolls around. XP seems quick enough at doing basic tasks with the installed 512 MB of RAM, but I still put in an order for a 2GB memory upgrade at Newegg today. One thing I can definitely say that I love is the keyboard. It's big enough that I don't even feel like there's was any kind of of period necessary to adapt as I'm typing away on it right now without any issues. On the flip side, the trackpad is a bit annoying as the scroll area isn't very precise and the buttons on each side certainly take some serious getting used to. Another thing I was VERY happy to see is that there was almost ZERO bloatware, not even so much as an antivirus trial of any sort, so I didn't have to spend a lot of time removing a bunch of garbage. I just went through the initial setup, installed Firefox with a compact theme, Avast AV and Media Player Classic and away I went. Just downloaded and played the 720p version of the new God of War III trailer and MPC played it back without a hitch, so I think overall this little guy and I are going to get along just fine.
Quick edit: Something I forgot to mention - the speakers. I was a bit surprised by how loud they were in comparison to some of the other netbooks I've played with. They aren't ear shattering and still quite tinny, but they are actually sufficiently loud enough that I can lean back and watch video without having to put my face right up near the screen or use headphones to make out the audio. This was unexpected and quite nice to discover. -
Just ordered the Mini 1035NR from NewEgg. I have been eyeing a netbook for sometime now, and am planning on selling my MacBook Pro since I don't need its raw power anymore (my desktop handles the tough jobs to begin with). Can't wait to get it...

Thinking about ordering one of these babies, they are Fiiine. Gonna check out a couple of reviews though.

Small update. I wanted the Mi version of the 1000 to begin with, so I downloaded and installed the MIE restore image. Install went without a hitch, and the interface is so slick, although I think the limitations put in place would be a bit frustrating for experienced Linux users. It also takes up about 1GB less disk space than the XP install, so that's definitely a plus. Another nicety is that so far it seems that all the needed codecs for media playback come preinstalled with the MIE image, so that cuts out a great deal of hassle for newbies.
Another new development is that I installed the newest BIOS today. It supposedly would cut down on the frequency/speed of the fan from what others were reporting, but so far it still seems to run about 75% of the time. Don't get me wrong, this isn't necessarily a bad thing since it's not very loud at all, but it would be nice to not have it going in the background so often. Guess it's better than the alternative, which would probably be a dead netbook from overheating.
Still happy with the performance and hardware config overall. I have gone and ordered a sleeve for it from HP's web site as well as the 2GB RAM upgrade and surely think this one is going to be a keeper.

Probably a silly question, and it also might already be answered in this thread somewhere but I thought I'd ask anyway:
Can the HP Mini 1000 series netbooks fit a 2.5 inch hard-drive? The factory installed one is 1.8 inches. When SSD drives become much cheaper, I intend to swap out the 60GB drive with an SSD drive. -

Don't know if anyone else has picked up one of these, but I just got one of the Mini 1000 sleeves from HP. It's extremely well padded and fits just right, also has the swirl pattern on it if you care about that kind of thing. Overall a very worthwhile purchase. I got it when they had temporarily dropped the price to $15.99 (regularly $19.99) and they go in and out of stock pretty quickly. Here's the link if anyone's interested:

Hi everyone-
This is my first post on this forum, I've been browsing this thread and decided to buy my HP mini 1000 last week. I can't wait to get it! I opted for the 16GB hard drive...I hope this is big enough but I don't plan on storing much on it at all, just mainly going to use it around campus for the internet and portability factor.
Cheers!

The 2 GB RAM for the Mini 1000 (Kingston KTH-ZD8000A/2G) is now down to $27 with free shipping at NextWarehouse, www.nextwarehouse.com/item/?298489 ...and HP wants to move you from 512 KB to 1 GB for $25.

anyone know the real word on the VGA-out adapters?

Corsair, $19.99.
even at Crucial, they're only $24.

hey guys, I'm trying to download the HP Mini recovery image through the HP MIE Restore Image Creator (for formatting and reloading back to the original state), but when I run the app, I always get an error that says, "The image file download failed because of this error: The operation timed out."
anyone have a direct link to the Windows recovery image? or know how to solve this problem?
any help would be greatly appreciated on this matter. -
I just got my Mini 1033 and I love it. Works very well. My only gripe and/or worry is the at the top of the screen there is about an inch area at the top that sounds tacky when I grab it to shut the lid or open it. It sounds like that area of the plastic lcd screen cover is not sticking properly. Is this something that anyone else has experienced? Should I exchange or be worried about this?

I bought 3 and did not notice anything like that, no.

I read most of this thread and I have a few questions.
Is this still the biggest keyboard on a netbook available now, does anyone know of any new ones out or coming out with a bigger/spacier keyboard?
Is it hard to replace the RAM? There's no tutorials in this thread?
Also, is the 6-cell battery out yet? How long is the run time with this battery? -
It's incredibly easy to replace the memory on the netbook, so that's why there's no tutorial.
The 6-cell is available from HP's website, in the accessories section. My guess is the run-time is about 5-6 hours with the 6-cell, but I don't have one to confirm this. -
GO my hp mini 1116nr from best buy recently, and now IM running windows 7 build 7057 on it, and ist running great! One thing I thought I'd pick up for it was a stand, and a stand I got at walmart that folds up to raise it works great, I just needed some velcro to make it stay. One other thing iM thinking of getting for it is this deal on a 16gb sdhc card
http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0304661
anyone have opinions on the speed of sdhc?
cause I got an 8gb usb drive, but id like something "integrated" as in I dont have to take it out or fumble with it all the time and it just stays there, and hp's little usb drives seem expensive. -
HP just released a new mini, the 1137NR:

I wasn't planning to get the VGA adapter, but in light of the fact that it is so "hit-and-miss" to find it, I just ordered it. I would rather have it now, than wish I had it later but am unable to find it again.
Thanks for the heads up.
I am loving my Mini 1033CL, though, obviously, it is not my main computer (I have 7 laptops and a desktop).
Got a decent deal through Costco, which includes a second year warranty, and the ability bring it back within 90 days no questions asked.
I must admit that I have been *tempted* by Costco now offering the Samsung NC-10 for the same price, but I would miss the glossy screen and the style of the HP Mini. -
Just got my Kingston 2GB RAM card and am getting ready to upgrade. Also got the 6-cell battery and the HP neoprene sleeve, which fits the Mini even with the 6-cell battery attached. (I usually keep it in a Zeroshock sleeve, though.)
-
Yes, the sleeve definitely fits the Mini with the extended 6-cell battery, with room to spare. -
IIRC, you purchased them from buy.com.
Boy, did you luck out. I bought 2 from buy.com and both had "issues."
Both went back and I bought from Costco. Picked it up at the warehouse...I had a 25 dollar gift certificate...brought it down to 374.99 and Costco adds a second year to the warranty.
I'm pretty much done with buy.com, even though they were pretty decent about the whole thing. -
How does this compare to the Dell Mini 10 in term of ergonomie?
-
Hello everyone!
First time poster but fairly long time lurker here, just wanted to chime in a lil LoL
Picked up my HP1000 (actual model 1030nr) from Best buy after looking around and finally deciding I really dont "need" a macbook pro, when I can do all my heavy duty stuff at home on my base PC
Came with the 16gig SSD and after reading here, theres only 2 apparrent upgrade paths for the SSD for the mini, the runcore and the mitron right? While id like to up the 16gigs, I dont think I can afford to at their prices...yet.
In the meantime I upped the memory to 2 gigs and have both an 8gb jetflash card and a 32gig patriot SDHC card ( I have a 16 gig one of these for my canon camera and works like a charm) on their way from newegg ($93 for SDHC) and Trancend (like $34, thank you to the one that posted that they got theirs from there!)
Uses are mostly like, docs, web, and the like while on braks at work, but also was told it does pretty well with non-HD video through the likes of VLC and Media player classic (any further insight on that?) and as a big anime fan, I think it would be great to tote along a good 500gig external portible and have a veritable library on the go for travel.
Hers to hoping that it works well and i use it well!
laters,

I have a 1033CL from Costco, and even though everywhere I have read that this particular machine does not have Bluetooth, in the device manager, it indicates that there is (I'm dong this from memory)...a Bluetooth enumerator on one of the COM ports, plus there is a startup entry for Bluetooth.
Very strange.
Why would HP put these things in when there is no Bluetooth capability? -
Just a ring guys, there is currently a HP mini available for auction at Gobid there is a very good chance that you can save by bidding.
-
How fast is SDHC compared to the SSD hard drive?
-
Hi,
I'm new to this forum. My 14 year old daughter needs a netbook. I am trying to figure out the difference between a loaded HP Mini 1000 XP and the 1137. I did a chat with HP and they are clueless. I looked at the specs on each and can't see a difference. Any help is appreciated. -
Hi all, looking to upgrade the 16gb ssd on my 1030nr to a 32ssd.Does anyone know how to accomplish this? My guess is that it us under the batter pack chassis.
BTW running ubuntu 9.04 on my machine and lovin' it! -
I will be an HP Mini 1030NR owner in a few days.
Specs in sig.
