My idle temps are somewhere between 35 and 45 C. Load is between 80 and low 90s C. This is with the new BIOS (revision 5) and an undervolt of 177 mV on CPU and cache. I have CPU power setting at default (45W) in BIOS. Load temps were lower when I changed the CPU power setting to 20W, but performance was lower.

Good info @terrin . did you play around with any other settings on the CPU power in BIOS, or overclocked or turn turbo off for the temperature readings? And any games you played which hit those 90s?

The temperature readings I posted above are under the new bios with CPU set to 45 W and an undervolt of 177 mV on CPU and cache, with nothing else done. I have fiddled around with many of the settings, including different undervolt values (range of -125 mV to -180 mV). I have only tried setting the CPU from 45 W to 20 W in the BIOS. Load temps under those conditions (still using the 177 mV undervolt) were very good, but performance in certain situations was lower. The load temps were more like max of 80-85 C as opposed to 90-93 C. Idle was mostly the same, perhaps 2-3 C lower (Edit: I just remembered that these temps at 20 W were also with a limit of 3.6 GHz on the CPU boost frequency -- I set this with Throttle Stop). Interestingly, HW Monitor says my max CPU clock frequency at 20 W is still ~4 GHz (when I didn't limit it myself). My Cinebench score was much lower at 20 W than at 45 W though (even when CPU frequency is not manually limited), so I cranked the power back up. I tested a wide variety of games, but the temps I'm quoting are for Witcher 3 on ultra settings at 1080p, which produces the highest temps. I did not notice a drop in framerates when I lowered my CPU boost frequency from 4.1 GHz to 3.6 GHz, so this might be something to consider doing to get even better temps, if you prefer lower temps over faster frequencies. In games that require a very fast CPU (e.g., RTS games like Starcraft 2) this might not be the case. I like using the power I pay for, so I'll likely leave it unrestricted.

Hey Guys I am having these temps after 2hrs of gameplay at -110mv. The temps spike to 94-95 after 15 mins.

And the below is after 2hrs with no undervolt . But i can feel the throttling during the games if no UV is used.
cpu max 99 on all cores.
    Average cpu package 93.

    What do you recommend?

    Put more UV
Start up high like -200mv and do some stress tests/play some games. If you notice ANYTHING weird, the UV is unstable, and bump it down by -5mv, do this until u find the highest stable UV.

But tbh, it will not help that much due to a shared heatsink system. When you playing games,
the gpu provides more heat to the cpu which shouldn't be that hot, even at 100% Utilization

Yeah finally he redid his horrible live review where he didn't even know the specs of the unit he was reviewing he was tying to be funny which just hit the wrong buttons for me... People who are trying to decide what to get will only get more confused... Sigh....

There's some backlight bleed on the bottom edge on mine. I noticed that OWNorDisown had the same bleed. Should I try an exchange or is this just normal?

Mine is pretty similar. You can try if you want but I've seen similar bleed on many reviews. I think the thinner bezels can make the bleed worse because there's less area for tape to go around the edge to block out the light from behind the screen.

Thank you. It's on the bottom though (the various points of light on the bottom of that picture). The bezel is thickest there. So yours has those points of light on the bottom? The rest of that on the upper portions is IPS glow I think.

I'm going to buy the new HP Omen 15 soon and trying to decide which of the following in Germany available specs to choose: 15-dc0001ng, 15-dc0002ng, 15-dc0201ng, 15-dc0004ng, 15-dc0005ng

I do not need the 144Hz panel with it's built in G-Sync support but what I want is G-Sync on the external display.

So my question is: do the 60Hz versions with GTX 1060 graphics allow G-Sync on the external display? As far as I know this is not possible with the 1050 TI.

    Thx JugglerP

    Hey all.
I'm eyeing this laptop for college and I'm wondering if any of you managed to push a ~7 hour battery life for ordinary productivity tasks. This laptop seems like an absolute steal but the shorter battery life due to the hot chip and hungry GPU really kills it for me... Thanks a lot for the help.

I cannot personally confirm this but I have read that since it is a full 1060 and is dedicated (no mux), that it supports G-sync just like every other 1060.

I tried something and it made a big difference. I saw in one of the teardowns that they use some sort of tape or adhesive on the bezel. So, I thought maybe the seal wasn't uniform. I pressed on the back and took a soft cloth and ran it along the bezel on the bottom edge. I did this a few times and it seemed to have helped quite a bit. The bleed is almost unnoticeable now unless you know where to look. I imagine it'll probably loosen or warp again over time, but for now I'm happy with the improvement.

No. The best I have gotten is about four hours. I have heard some got five. But there's no way you'll push it to 7, even with the BIOS TDP setting at its lowest. Unplugged though, there wouldn't be much difference between this and an Ultrabook. So for battery life, I'd just get something with an i5-8250u and no additional GPU and a big battery. The power of this thing (or any laptop) only really comes into play when plugged in.

Yeah that makes sense. It's a bit of a bummer since a laptop with 16gb ram + two drives is really hard to come by under $1000, so I guess I'll hold off a little longer until a sale comes up. Thanks.

So in my understanding the 1050 TI models have Optimus (= no G-Sync possible) whereas in the 1060 models the gpu is dedicated. Unfortunately I can't find any reliable Information about this (e.g. spcifications on HP Website).

Yes, this model has no Optimus (cannot use the integrated Intel graphics), but I'm not sure if you can use the OMEN for G-Sync. My guess is that it can since no ports will be tied to the integrated GPU, all being routed through the discrete GPU. I'll try and look around for the info. though and post back here if I find anything.

So I’m looking for a laptop to do basic video editing which may progress to more.. right now it would just be making highlight videos of my kids sports..

I don’t game (have a PS4 for that) so wondering if this will be a good fit for my needs. Not worried about exact color or whatever that is that most people bring up when talking about video and photo editing.

Planned on getting this tomorrow but curious about what opinions are for using this as a video editing rig. Worried about all the talk of super loud fans and heeeeeeeat.

    Thanks!

Hey Christian how are the thermals with the 1070, BTW is the 1070 full fat or the maxq version? I'm pretty much interested to find out... Did you find the gpu thermal throttle?

I'm the same way. I use my PS4 for gaming. Although, I did just get the $199 HP Mixed Virtual Reality headset and I'm trying that. I use gaming laptops for video and photo editing. I like having just one machine that can do basic tasks unplugged on the couch, plus more powerful things when plugged in.

I think this works great for that purpose. It might get a little louder than a desktop depending on the cooling choices made for the desktop but it's not bad. At least the fans aren't high-pitched so the sound doesn't bother me as much as the Dell G7 or Dell XPS did. This gives you the power of a desktop, with the flexibility of a laptop.

Glad I could help. Check out the YouTube review by OWNorDisown for a Throttlestop tweak that I liked. It boosted the machine by another 10% while maintaining lower temps. Also, make sure to update to the latest BIOS. It'll increase your fan noise a bit but it makes a big difference with thermals. And, turn off the "fan on all the time" setting in the BIOS if you want it silent when unplugged (other than the noise of the hard drive). Turning that off though probable causes the fans to kick on more abruptly when needed but I personally prefer it because they're usually silent when I'm surfing on the couch. Hope you like it.

I Need to decide between the following to options:
    • dc0201ng: i5-8300h, 8GB, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 1060 GTX 3GB, 60 HZ IPS Panel. 1199 Euro
    • dc0005ng: i7-8750h, 16GB, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 1060 GTX 6GB, 144 HZ IPS Panel. 1599 Euro
I'll use the Notebook mainly as a desktop replacement connected to an external monitor. I know that the 60 HZ panel is just about medicore but I won't plan to carry around the laptop very often. So I'll not use the internal display a lot.

I play mostly MMORPGs like WOW and TESO and some other not too demanding games (Diablo 3,...).

Price difference of 400 bucks is a lot of Money to me. Also I think the i5-8300h CPU will be sufficient for my needs and will give me better thermals (right?).

What do you think? Is the 144HZ Display and the CPU upgrade worth it?

I think since you are connecting to an external display, the 60hz option should suffice. The processor should enough for the titles you mentioned. I think the notebookcheck review is for the i5, so do go thru that.

One more Question: with all the tweaks mentioned in this thread - is it possible to achieve an almonst silent (fans off or very low) operation during idle and light work?

I wan't to use the device not only for gaming but also as my daily driver (Internet, listing to Music, working with office doucments...)?

    Thx all.

Hi, it is indeed the 1070 Max-Q version. I've never had any problems with GPU thermals, but apparently the 8750H runs very hot when gaming (CPU Package reaches 99c) without undervolting.

Turn off turbo boost using throttle stop. With turbo boost on, when I playing witcher 3 cpu temp and gpu temp goes up to 90-95c and 85-87c. Then I turned off turbo boost. Now cpu temp between 65-72c and gpu temp between 75-80c.
