Did you check your FPS under both conditions, both with and without turbo boost?

Earlier it was mentioned that the 60hz panel is the AUO23ED. Thishttp://hktrx.panelook.com/B156HAN02...its-WLED-eDP-30pins-AUO23ED-detail_60565.html spec sheet shows Outline Dimension : 350.66 (W) × 216.15 (H) mm for its dimensions which is a little smaller than 359.5(H)×223.8(V) that is listed for the AUO42ED that Bob tried to install. The AUO80ED 144hz http://www.panelook.com/B156HAN08.0_AUO_15.6_LCM_overview_34288.html looks like it would fit physically but uses 4 lane 40 pin cable.

The NV156FHM-N61 (BOE06FB) looks like it would fit, still only 60hz but much better specs on paper.

With ultra settings and hair works off,
    With turbo boost - 52-55
    Without turbo boost - 55-60
I don't know exact reason but without turbo boost I have gained more than 5 fps.

Wow, that's really surprising. I might try that out. So when you had turbo boost off, your CPU just sat at 2.2 GHz?

Yep. I have undervolt cpu core and cache by - 1.445. And I'm using performance mode in omen command center while playing.

What's the unit on your undervolt of -1.445? Do you mean -144.5 mV or -.1445 V?

Sorry to ask again but I'm really interested in how the Omen behaves in non gaming use. Maybe someone can tell me about the fan noise during idle and light use?

    Thx JugglerP

Hiya. Glad to report that after UV to -.125, power throttled to "better performance" my max temp was 83C, averaging low 60s as per HWINFO. This was after 2.5 hours playing Shadow of Mordor in mixed High-Ultra Settings. Previously I was peaking 99 with thermal throttling in all cores. I will continue to observe and update here but so far, so good.

I'm especially interested in thermals and fan noise in the following situtions:
    • 100% idle
    • Streaming music but leave it untouched otherwise. In fact, this is the main use for my current PC when I'm not working or gaming on it.
    • Small office documents like Excel and Word
    • Internet browsing

    When idle - CPU/GPU temps 40/32....
    Normal use :
    CPU temp 48 - 50c (room temp 28-32)
    GPU temp 48 - 50c
    Fan noise - 22-25 db
(sometimes when fans randomly kicked in noise can goes up to 30db.but only for few minutes)

Hey there fellow HP owners, special shoutout to Bob for the review (made me pickup this baby @ microcenter).

Does anyone know whether the battery is working correctly when you reinstall windows? I seem to vaguely remember that it would drop to like 90% while charged or stop charging, could be wrong though. But since this is a gaming laptop first and foremost it's always plugged in when I'm playing, but I'm also worried that this might harm the battery.

Anyone got some input on this?

Bob, this is a fantastic review.. I got my laptop today but I feel I was in for a less than happy surprise. I ran some benchmarks and I noticed very low scores on my SSD. Looking into that, I found out there was a Toshiba NVME Kxg50znv256g. The write performance is less than ideal, I'm getting about 250-300MB's and Reads of 1000MB's.. Looking online it seems Samsung users are getting at least twice that. You can notably tell the laptop drags when installing applications and feels sluggish. I'm going to return mine as I'm just not happy about this. I called HP but they said if I sent it in they would have to replace it with the same part number that was already installed. Seems like bad luck if you get the Toshiba NVME.

Completely normal to get 50-60 with even just chrome/internet explorer and watching YouTube vids especially with your ambient temps that side. Quite normal. Enjoy your laptop, let us know the temps of your CPU and GPU while playing a game.

Hey guys - so i have the 2018 HP omen 15 with a fresh install of windows 10 and an updated BIOs. I'm getting a lot better temps now after updating the BIOs and undervolting, but my damn clock is totally messed up and fails to keep time properly whenever i put the computer to sleep or shut it down! I have to go into the date/time settings and toggle the update clock automatically for it to fix the time. I've tried going into the control panel and setting the server, clicking update server, and everything else i can think of. If i shut the computer down at 1:30am, and turn it on 12 hours later, the clock will say 1:30am.

Anyone else experiencing this issue on their end? Thanks for any help!

Hey karcho, would you mind confirming whether the color depth on your display is 6 bit or 8 bit (it's under advanced display settings under Display in the control panel). I picked up the $999 version from Microcenter with the 60hz display, and I'm having an issue where certain shades of blue and gray show some faint horizontal lines, resulting in larger fields of these colors (for instance, lots of the solid blue areas of Win 10) looking striped/textured rather than solid. I've found a few comments about this issue online, without much resolution, but it sounds like it could be an issue with my display having 6 bit color depth, so I'm wondering it upgrading to the 144hz display might resolve this. Apparently it's an issue that might also just have to do with an individual person's eyes and what they're sensitive to, so I'm at a bit of a loss whether I have a faulty display, whether I need an upgrade, or if I'm just out of luck and maybe need to think about returning.

temperatures while gaming are in the middle 80C , memory utilization is 25% at startup it is kinda weird but it looks like chrome is using most of the ram
    @ak1119 its 8bit

Does anyone seem to get choppy performance even though your FPS counter is showing a steady 60 FPS? I've been playing Fortnite/PUBG/Black Ops 4 beta, and while all of these games run at 60+ fps, some moments definitely feel more choppy than others (same framerate).

Going to test a few setups, see if it's a throttling issue, the drivers are the latest and I've updated the BIOS as well, CPU also seems to be running at 3.9GHZ all the time while playing, it's not unplayable but definitely noticeable.

How is it performance wise? Like the benchmark scores. I'm confused to buy this or MSI GE63 8RF. Both have i7-8750H and gtx 1070 max-q.

Does it cause a huge drop in clock speed while running for long? How about fps drop after heating?

How long after you purchased the laptop did you do this? Mine is only 5 days old so I'm wondering if it's even worth doing. I have mods on a game that I don't want to lose so I'm thinking transfer the files to an external drive before doing so. This is my first PC in almost 20 years and I know nothing about BIOS or updating drivers and things. I don't even know how to look at stats like frame rates during gaming sessions. Gonna have to learn fast!

Not yet, it happened this morning. I'm reading some hp forums and it looks like I can try to reinstall the "ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" in device manager. Earlier I didn't even do a battery test as I couldn't figure out how to get there. Tonight will try some fixes from forums and if it doesn't work I'm taking it back to Microcenter.

I also don't understand how to do a clean install of Windows but someone else said that helps run games smoother. If it's worth doing on a brand new computer I'll try to do it or see if they can do it for me.

Yeah you can try that and hope the there is no hardware issue either in laptop or adapter side.

Reinstalling windows help as HP installs a lot of bloatware with the original purchase which only consume cpu and ram usage.

Keep it below 86 or 90c degrees and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. As long as it's not throttling you are safe :)

Purchased this laptop 5 days ago from Micro Center. Got her home and installed Starcraft 2 to give it a go on high/ultra settings (upgrading from 2011 MacBook Air ). Install went fine. Played for about 30-45 min and shut it down and went to bed. Next day tried to load battle.net and I get a memory reference error. After that point every application gives a memory reference error and crashes. Ran multiple RAM diagnostic tools but all show RAM is ok. Waiting for a new stick to come in the mail to test but super frustrating. Anyone else experience this or know what could cause it? I’m not crazy tech savvy but I know my way around a bit. Also did 2 separate clean installs of Windows 10. Still get same errors.

For me it seems to happen when I limit the fps to 60 without vsync, and the low GPU usage seems to be the culprit, uncapping solves it and gives more consistent frametimes. Kinda sucks, since there’s little point to have it churn out 120 fps in fortnite, but I guess I can always get the 144hz screen for it. (Bout 300$ from HP in europe, not available in the US afaik)

The clock on my omen 15 fails to keep time whenever i shut down the machine or put it to sleep.

For example: If i shut down my computer at 1:30am and turn it on 12 hours later, it'll say its still 1:30am. Any idea what could be causing this? The battery seems to be fine and holds a good charge.

I did install a fresh install of windows and updated the BIOs when i first received the laptop and I'm not sure if it could be a software or hardware issue. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

That's really frustrating. Make sure you have the correct settings for date and time. Go to settings> date and time and select your time zone and also check the set time automatically option (better if you're connected to internet as well). I assume you already did that by now so now get into the bios and check the time if it matches the real time or not. Restart the laptop and see if the problem is solved, if not then you need to replace your CMOS battery.

You missed an important point - the new 144 Hz panel is just amazing and colour accurate (most of the people here bought the crappy 60Hz panel).
Thermals are high, indeed. Reaching 80 degree Celsius but there is no thermal throttling at all.
Fans are audible at idle and gets way too loud at high load.
    No other issues so far.

Thanks for the reply! I just bought the laptop from Microcenter about a week ago - Do you think its worth taking back to MC because of the CMOS battery? Or is this something I can easily replace myself with little to no cost?

You sure can replace it by yourself. There are tons of tutorials about how to do it. But since you bought it recently, therefore you can blame MC and get your work done. Customers deserve a good product if they buy something with such a price range at least. Also if doing by yourself with a less experience about hardware, you have to be really very careful.

Any application I try and open now that is not preinstalled with Windows will give me an error like the following...

The instruction at 0x######## referenced memory at 0x########. The memory could not be read. Click ok to terminate the program.

It seems the ##### are always different each time. And now it won’t let me uninstall anything at all without getting an error like above.

Oh and the first time I tried to clean instal windows it got stuck in a boot loop fir like an hour before I had to force it to install from a usb. Don’t know if that could be related.

Quite hard to say about that but it may be possible that some file got corrupt/missed in that session.
Have you tried running a system file checker scan? If not, then do it (type 'sfc /scannow' without quotes in command prompt with administrator permission).

Did that after the clean install from the usb and after still encountering the memory errors. Scan showed no problems. Ran 15 passes of Windows Memory test. Showed no issues. Used another ram program (name escapes me right now) and no errors were found.

Read somewhere it could be the ram socket or some cpu pins are bad/misaligned?

Not really sure about that cause if there are some bad/misaligned cpu pins, then it's a manufacturing default. Actually there are many reasons for this to happen. You should take it back to MC and tell them about it before messing up with hardware I guess. Cause hardware issues in new machines get covered in the warranty.

Does it really matter what you carry if you can't use it to its maximum potential?

If you're looking at the model number raphandryu it's for the 60 hz screen and also OP & most people will get this from Mc for 999 USD so almost 300 usd from price on HP itself. But then again I'm not sure what is happening to HPs QC standard never looked at this brand since my dv5000, been availing different brands vs hp until seeing this model...
