Does anybody know how the CPU speed is managed?
When idle in Windows, it runs at 1,6GHz (according to CPU-Z).
When stressing it a bit (I've got VLC, MPC, Winamp, WMPlayer and Crayon Physics running) and it ups the speed to 2GHz.
In the interest of inner peace of my for my inner gamer and useless battery burning, I would like to know if it can be forced to always run at 2GHz?
(I tried the "High performance" battery setting - but it didn't change anything). -
-
I'm quite interested in getting this model, however being in the UK I don't get the backlit keyboard (I know of the dv3600, however at the moment a retailer has the 3507ea nearly £200 cheaper than others therefore I'd rather not miss on this opportunity) and was was wondering as to how bad the problem was with the keyboard; dark colour labelling of the keys (with a dark finish) and no backlight (if anyone has pictures that'd be great, under light and dark conditions). <- Issue number 1)
2) The dv3500 has the PM45 chipset, right? The Intel page says that this chipset supports DDR2 and DDR3 memory. Can anyone confirm that DDR3 is possible with this system, or is it motherboard dependant too (as opposed just to a chipset issue)? Also, anyone tried higher rated DDR2 memory, and what is the actual max RAM? I'm finding it hard to believe that the dv3600 can have 8GB, while the dv3500 only 4. I mean, would they change the motherboard between these two models or what?
3) I've been told that HP laptops often get uncomfortably hot. How is it with this model? Also given how metals act with heat, does the chrome finish affect this lappy in some way?
4) Anyone has the 12-cell battery? If yes, then how much batterly life do you get and how much does it stick out from the bottom?
5) Does the DVD drive support DVD-RAM?
Thanks. -
hi.
sorry can't answer all your questions as i haven't received my notebook yet...
but i can say that it supports only DDR2 as it has slots only for DDR2. -
i am amused by so much wrong information being provided or questions being asked based on wrong assumptions when the answers are provided for earlier in the thread either directly or thru links to other dv3500 threads in this forum.
-
2. Chipset may be P45 but no DDR3 support; memory coul be expanded to 8Gb on DV3500 also; dont think HP change motherboard!
3. HOt yes a litle bit, but not crazy at all, I use and much more hotter notebooks. HP crome finish is made from plasticits normal no lappy
4. dont see 12 cell batary even 9 cell
5. yepp dvd-ram supported in NERO info tool says this. -
Thanks for the tip about the processor rate, harddy. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. Perhaps I need to install an extra driver or piece of software (seeing as how I've removed the bundled Vista in favor of XP/Win7).
-
Open your registry, create a new DWORD value, or search and modify the existing value, called "HackFlags." Edit the value according to the settings below.
0 = disable native XP support
1 = use settings inherited from Intel software during XP upgrade
5 = give XP complete support and control over the processor speed; system can support all modes when running on battery -
Hi Chokoladenudlen, mind if I ask you at what point after installing XP did you install your audio drivers? I installed my chipset driver & then tried the audio & no matter what recent IDT driver I try to use it always shows a message like not for this operating system or something similar... Thanx
-
Pretty much set on buying it now, would just like to see some pics of the keyboard beforehand though. -
@StylishD
I don't recall in which order I installed the drivers, but I usually go: Chipset, Graphics, Sound.
I don't recall the "not for this os" problem - perhaps I just pointed to the driver directory after having chosen update drivers in the device manager. -
Looks like Keyboard could be changed, "qwackerz" open up his DV3500 and look what he say:
"Iv just opened it up and the "IS" a ZIF connector (CN10) in the place where the backlit keyboard plugs in..........:smileyhappy:
"
then we have to by it and change it
-
MARTIO - I'm also thing of buying the DV3507ea. Being in the UK whats the best price you've managed to find the laptop at and where from... cheapest I've seen is Dabs at £679
Regards

EDIT: Another question for dv3 users; what temperatures do you get when idle, playing games, watching movies, web-browsing, etc? Thanks. -
When the dv3600 soon is about to be released in sweden I was looking up some facts about it. I read in some thread here at notebookreview that it was going to be delivered with back light kb. So I mailed hp and asked them about it since there where no info about that thing on their product homepage. Sadly I recived the answer that it's not going to have that feature which I was hoping so badly it would! If it wasn't for that missing function I wolud definitly go for this machine. =(

Martino - I've seen it slightly cheaper at LASKSY £669.99 with free delivery:

Hmmm... Silver one... plus I've never heard of that place before. Does it note whether they have it in stock or not?

Thats an idea, but i prefer to have all the right letters on my kb. You know in Sweden we have 3 letters after "z" which are å, ä, ö. They are a must-have on a computer in my world.
I asked some more questions and parently the pavilion series are only produced for three months and then an new model replaces the older one. That what hapens whith the dv3550 and (the newer) dv3600 now. Too bad it does'nt have all the features I requests.

I started to buy the dv3510 from best buy tonight, but was not happy with the Alps touchpad. I am use to and prefer the functionality of the synaptics touchpad. With the Alps, I could not find a way to turn off "tapping" or to enable scrolling. Did I miss something? Can you disable tapping? Does it support vertical scrolling?
UPDATE: Never mind, chatted with hp tech and realized apoint.exe that enables gestures was not running hence no means to diable tapping or enable scrolling. -
Hello,
In Portugal there are two models:
- dv3560ep: http://h20195.www2.hp.com/PDF/c01629090.pdf
- dv3650ep: http://h20195.www2.hp.com/PDF/c01636635.pdf
The first model (dv3560ep) comes with two batterys (4cell and 6cell) and the P8600 processor.
I'm looking for a portable laptop with a good battery, but i just can't decide between the Asus N20 (12.1' P8400 - 1085€or this HP (13.3' P8600 - 1133€ - the dv3560ep)...
Cheers -

Can get the DV3500 for 550GBP but want the better 3507.
The DV3600 is just a 3500 with the US backlit keyboard as everyone in UK complained. Just get the US keyboard -

If you read a bit further on you'll find out.
Anyway, after some trouble with my bank I got my 3507ea yesterday (typing on it right now in fact) and I have to say it's quite a nice machine. I'm not usually into long-posts so I'll just outline some more important things.
What I don't like:
1) The touchpad; As has been mentioned before, the surface doesn't really make it easy for a finger to move around. There's some drag induced, which isn't serious, but not pleasant either. I'm hoping that putting some thin sheet of foil or something similar would solve the problem, but I'll have to try to actually find out.
2) The keys in dark; It's actually worse than I expected. When I'm working in low-light/dark conditions it does become really hard to see which keys I'm actually pressing. Not a big problem for me since I usually type w/o looking at the keyboard, but for some it may be an annoyance.
3) The media buttons; I would have prefered keys instead of a touch interface. So far I've found it to be very iffy and annoying to use. Maybe just my fingers suck, or I haven't found a proper way of approaching the system.
4) This one will be lulz; The whole laptop's finish and build looks so fine and classy that I almost feel that it is a waste to use it.
-- Also surface if very prone to fingerprints and grease marks.
5) I wish the BIOS was more refined, ie switch off Bluetooth, WLAN, etc...
Since I'm not a big fan of Windows, but rather a Linux user I put Kubuntu 8.10 x86_64 as soon as I had the chance. WLAN worked out of the box, as did most of the things. I haven't tested the card reader yet, nor the eSATA port. Media buttons work to some extent; Volume and mute work fine, however muting doesn't make the key glow red. The other buttons exhibit strange behaviour. WLAN indicator usually works well, although at some times, for no apparent reason it starts flashing red. Bluetooth so far I haven't managed to test properly. I have a feeling it's on, but not sure. Also I haven't managed to adjust the brightness of the screen yet, and Fn buttons don't work out of the box.
I'll see in the next few days how I'll get on with Kubuntu on this laptop, but so far no major complaints. -
Screen brightness forks from box fine. Check your HPdrivers for media butons. -
Where did you end up getting it from and how much was it going for?
the mute button should go red when muted.. -
some media pads work good others have the sensitive problem like you said
-
Can someone comment on the battery life of the DV3705ea....
-
so has anybody actually gone ahead and bought the US backlit keyboard and installed it on a machine without backlighting? How did it work out?
-
As far as battery file goes I can get about 3 hours from it when web browsing, text editing and some light compiling. -
I think I've finally made up my mind. I'm gonna go for the 3550eo, as it's called i Sweden. The price is too good right now! Can't resist it any longer =)! Just have to tell my self that the new Dell Studio XPS 1340 is too expensive for me and have too much "krims-krams" that I don't need. For example the GeForce 9300M GS will be enough for the little gaming I'm going theese days, which is world in conflict, CoD4, Far Cry 2. Hopfully it will be powerful enough for the upcoming Diablo 3 as well, but on lower settings I think so! I'm not spoild when it comes to graphics settings today either with my ATI Radeon 2600 Mobility w/ 512mb DDR2 memory. Besides; I'm dieing for some battery stamina!!! =)

Thought id pop over here and say Hi......

The lid logo on the DV4 was white but on my 3500 its kind lavinder.....

Hello All. Im not sure if this has been addressed or not so i figure i will go ahead and ask about it. This forum was very helpful making me decided to go with the HP Dv3510NR. Its a very awesome computer besides on thing. Im not thrilled with the gaming on it. I knew it wasn't a great for gaming computer but i figured it should excel pretty well. I have an almost 2 year old Macbook Pro that can still kick this ones in gaming (Dont worry i use XP on it for games, not OSX lol).
But im wondering if anybody has opened their DV3510NR and seen if the video card is replaceable via an Nvidia MXM architecture type card. Ive heard that the Nvidia 9300M GS IS MXM, but i would like to see if anybody knows for sure.
If not im willing to open this bad boy up and let anyone know, just figured id see if anybody already did it or not.
If i dont hear back in like 3 days i will start to tackle this task and get back to the forums if its possible and i will get some pictures for you guys!
Thanks Mic -
