I bought a DV5T a week ago and ordered 2gb RAM with it. I realized this was not enough, so I bought 4 gb of PC2-6400 RAM. When I go to Computer from my start menu, it says on the bottom that i still only have 2.00 gb, but I have 2 x 2gb sticks in there! Please help!

    EDIT: Got it working!

Looking to upgrade a DV5T that does NOT have the bluetooth module installed. I was able to find by searching the thread the P/N's for the following:

    489822-001 - Bluetooth module cable
    483113-001 - Bluetooth module
    Service manual for the DV5T

I have seen others in this thread inquire about the P/N's as well as reading the service manual, but I don't know about any other issues that may come up when I take the computer apart. Has anyone else upgraded their DV5T successfully with the above parts? Does the bluetooth module come without the cable for certain? Are there any issues with doing this install that others know? Does anyone know about another part that is compatable with the above module for cheaper? Thanks for your help on this.

Is anyone experiencing difficulties with internet connection? My dv5t randomly loses connection at home and school. I have the N-technology upgrade. If anyone knows why this is happening, please let me know!

How far are you away from the wireless access point? What kind of signal strength are you getting from your laptop? Are there other access points nearby? Try running "ping -n 100 xxx.yyy.zzz" from a command prompt. Also try the "tracert" command, to see if it's your laptop-to-wap which is being the issue, or the wap-to-elsewhere.

If you're in a "crowded" wireless environment, you need to set up your network to connect to only your "preferred" network, and not always look for other connections.

    Good luck!

hdt, thanks for your reply. I am about 6 feet away from my router at home. The strength is always excellent (all bars are full). Can you elaborate more on the commands, I am a newbie. What am I supposed to add for xxx.yyy.zzz? And which options do I chose for "tracert"? The classes I was in had about 400 students, but then when I was at the library late last night it still did it.
    Thanks

Assuming your home router is 192.168.1.1, open a command window, and type "ping -n 100 192.168.1.1" to see some statistics about how reliable your connection to your home router is. If you have fast reflexes, you may open a command window, and have the "ping -n 100 192.168.1.1" command waiting. When you have your next network drop, switch to the command window, and hit the return key, so you get statistics at the time of the network drop.

For tracert, again, from a command window, "tracert www.google.com" (or whichever web site you use the most). While tracert is not 100% reliable, it's a fair diagnostic to see if there's a hangup somewhere in the network downstream of your router.

If your school/library provides "free" wifi access, you probably want to set up your Vista network wizard (or HP wifi assistant) to only connect to the school/library network. It's been my experience that Windows/Vista (XP too...) will try to connect to the strongest network around, unless you specifically tell it to only connect to a particular network. Frequently, in public places, somebody will start a laptop, and broadcast an 'ad-hoc' network. Your computer will see that 'ad-hoc' network and may try to connect to the network (your computer is smarter than you or I, and knows what's best for you ;) ). This action will temporarily slow down or stop your connection. You should force your computer to not seek new networks. It's one of the options in the wifi assistant/network wizard.

If you have a 2.4GHz cordless phone (or if someone in your neighborhood has one...), or a bad microwave oven, these are known to interfere with 802.11 b/g wireless. The new "N" (if you have an N router) adds a different frequency, so you are less subject to interference. If you're only 6 ft from your wireless router, that may not be an issue. (On the other hand, if you're only 6 ft from your wireless router, why not just run an ethernet cable? :D If I had my choice at home, I'd have a hard-wired ethernet cable in every room next to the desk. Wireless only for couch-surfing!)

Last, but not least: Some routers are known to have problems with mixed environments (if you have b/g/n, and someone in the network is running b, everyone is forced to b-speed).

    Hope that helps...

As far as I know, the school offers only one type of connection, and my laptop only finds that wireless connection. Oye, I should have mentioned that I am using the G router. I usually adjust my laptop a lot when I'm doing hw on my desk, so the wire would really get in my way. However, I have tried connecting with the ethernet cable a few days ago, and it happened once as well. Besides the two other computers in my house, which are rarely on, I am the only other one connected to the network.

Thanks for that very helpful explanation.

Your network looks really good (for now). Thing to do is to catch it when it goes bad.

If you see the intermittent drop with either wired or wifi, I'd suspect the router, cable modem/dsl/broadband, or something further downstream (like the internet backbone connection router, or whatever it's called; items 3 or 4 in your tracert).

One more thing that I forgot to mention: If you still have Norton (free 60 day trial), Norton chooses when to update itself. Ditto with scans. The result? Your computer inexplicably slows down for a while. You may also want to adjust the times that MS/Windows updates your system. The default of daily at 3:00am works for me (but may not work for students...)

    Good luck!

Maybe it's not a problem with your laptop and it's just intermittent internet death?

Every single internet connection I've ever used would occasionally die for a few seconds to a couple minutes occaisionally. Do you lose your connection to the network when this happens? Or does the internet just stop working?

I don't use that one but rather an Antec cooler and it works great.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997396

One suggestion I would make is to make sure that the laptop cooler you get "blows" the air under the laptop instead of "sucking" the air out from under the laptop.

I really like that Antec version as it blows the air under the laptop and is small enough to move around from desk to desk.

There are others of course and many people in this thread recommend the Zalman cooler.

ok, I stupidly updated my Touch buttons when they were working perfect (I told Windows update to install all updates).

Anyway, I have that dreaded always orange mute button (it still operates, but the color just doesn't change). Has anyone found a fix for this?

Edit: I searched quickly on google, and someone suggested uninstalling it, then restarting which should reinstall it it with the original drivers. The problem is that I don't know what the touch keys are called in Device Manager.

I went to the HP site to configure a dv5t. I am considering it versus the Dell 1640. Overall I like the Dell model better for various reasons, but prefer the nvidia graphics option in the HP.

Strangely I cannot find the dv5t anymore, as of Friday morning 1/23 only the "Special Edition" version is showing up along with the dv5z. I assume HP removed it from their offerings, whether temporary or permanent I don't know. Is there a new model on the way ?

Our best guess is they are out of stock right now, although they may be phasing out the 15.4" laptops. End result, we have no idea. lol

3D.Art: Thanks, I uninstalled it, then reinstalled and it worked like a charm. ;)

When my mute button won't stop being all orange, I mute it, restart, and unmute it. The button always changes back to white after that for some reason.

Do you think they will be comming out with more 15.4 laptops? Do you think I should buy my dv5t on the phone with them while they still MIGHT have supplies? Or should I just wait for it's replacement?

I'm hoping a new model will be available soon. The 15" size makes for a nice tradeoff of power and size/weight, and HP to its credit had decent dedicated video options for the dv5t. Moving to the bigger 16-17" series, all you get is a slightly bigger pixels and a numeric keypad, neither of which justify (to me) the extra bulk and heft.

    Might as well fantasize:

15.6" 1600x900 or 1920x1080 screen with LED backlighting
ATI 4850 or Nvidia 9700M GTS (i.e. 256-bit memory path)
Intel X25-E 64GB SSD plus eSATA for bulk external storage
    P9600 with 8gb DDR3
    Large synaptics touch pad
Keyboard with black keys and LED backlighting
    Slot-load Blu-Ray/DVD drive
    12 cell battery
    Under 6 lbs

Build it and I will buy!

    hello everybody.
I have been looking around here for a few days and now i have a problem and would appreciate some help from you guys.

I purchased a dv5t and received it on thursday. I have had some problems with the dvd burner and the unit shutting down by itself. error 1012? So i decided i would just exchange it for a new one.

So turns out they don't have any with the nvidia graphics card for exchange and told me the only way to get the 512mb card was to go with the dv6t. They said it would have all the same components i originally ordered.

My question for you guys is are there any differences between the dv5t and dv6t? The girl from india said it was an upgrade. But on the website it has a lower base price.

Any help would be very appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Jonathan

On it being an upgrade, it would depend on what gpu was in the dv5t. If it was the 9600M GT, there is no comparable replacement in the dv6t.

The dv6t is bigger, heavier and has a numeric keypad and the new 16:9 screens.

The dv6t does not come with the 9600m GT 512 but only a 9200m GS. They are not equal.

If you are looking for a 9600M GT than you will have to upgrade to the HDX16 or send dv5t in for repair.

Also, the dv6t has a 6:9 wide screen display (1366x768) compared to the 1280x800 that comes with the dv5t.

Just as and FYI... the best GPU that HP offers in their "Versatile performance" models currently is in the dv5z model (3650 512M)

    * • No TV Tuner w/remote control
    * • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    * • Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    * • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

It took me forever to find what i thought to be the perfect laptop for me at the price i wanted. $696

When i received the lappie i started to create the recovery discs. This process took all day. It kept saying there were errors with the disc i was using (Sony DVD-r) It shut down a couple times by itself. Error 1012 popped up on the screen and said to contact hp. I also received a windows error saying that windows shut down unexpectedly. I clicked the link provided and windows said there was a hardware problem. I ran some diagnostic test on the hard drive and memory. all tested good. I reseated the memory. I called tech support. (what a joke) I called customer service she said my only option was to exchange it but they could only do the dv6t.

I really want to keep the current set up i have now put am scared i will have more problems in the future. I have only had the unit since Thursday. I want to make a decision before my 21 days are up.

What do you guys think I should do?

I really appreciate this forum and everyone's help with this problem.

    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Is there no chance that HP can repair the unit instead of replacing it? If they give you a dv6t with the 9200M GS, it will be quite a step down from what you have now.

Myself, I would first try to reinstall Vista from a regular MS disc and see if errors continue. If it was still messed up after that, it is a hardware problem (and I'd send it back).

I have contacted HP Holland. I want to know what's with the DV5t, why are the 9600M GT versions End of Life? And what's up with the garanty if the videocard breaks down.

Waiting for a reply from HP Holland :)

I was running the "SiSoftware Sandra" to get some information about my system and I noticed that under "Supported Memory types", it says " DDR2 DDR3 SO DIMM". I didn't know that the DV5t's motherboard supported DDR3....has anybody tried using the DDR3 memory on their systems?

Also, I'm getting a warning under "performance tips" which says, "FSB exceeds chipset rated FSB. If you’re over clocking the system just be aware that it may not be as stable as you may think". I have not overclocked my notebook and I'm not sure what should be done about this. Any pointers on this?

    Thanks

Frame loss on hi definition movies through HDMI cable

Anyone else experienced frames loss when viewing high definition movies on an external display when connected through an HDMI cable? They play fine on the laptop screen or on the same external display through VGA cable. I believe I need a better cable but I tried with 2 I have with same results. Wanted to check with you guys first... Perhaps there's some nasty trick I'm missing.

The dv5t does not support the DDR3 DIMM modules. The Intel chipset in the dv5t supports DDR3 but not the systemboard. DDR3 has a different pin count and is not backward supported with DDR2 memory controls.

I'm too afraid to do a clean install, I wish I could. Anyway, everytime I check drive c, there is less and less space, and I have not put too much on here. What is taking up all the space? Besides the HP Recovery, I have 175 GB free out of 222GB. Only a few days ago it was 180 something. I have not even had it a week.

Any ideas and as always thanks everyone, your help is invaluable.

After doing my clean install of vista and adding all of the necessary vista updates and drivers my hard drive has 206GB free of 232GB. It is a day and night difference in speed and performance. I only have 2gb of ram but have ordered 4 gb from newegg and cant imagine how well it will run then.

Yeah I just too noticed that the DV5T is gone. Also from Costco's site.

I don't think it's a stock issue. They would be the first ever company to redesign their website just to deal with an out of stock issue :p

Also, HP and Dell have never NOT accepted an order when 1 or more parts are out of stock for a laptop. It simply pushes out your shipment date.

I'm ok with it being phased out as it was proven to be a very sturdy, affordable, nice performing laptop and if you are looking for a NON-glare screen, don't care for 16:9 displays if you are more into productivity than movie watching, and wanted a decent video card, this was the _only_ option.

But I was going to add the Accidental Damage coverage from HP for the Costco purchase.

I wonder if they will offer that still since the product is now kaput.

I guess that is also the good part of ordering from Costco. I still have 2.5 months to return in IN CASE they do actually come out with a true DV5T replacement.

If not, it was a good price (~1250) for all maxed out components.

I ordered the dv5t about a week or so ago, with these specs

    # Onyx
    # • Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    # • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)
    # • 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1280 x 800)
    # • 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    # • 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS*****
    # • FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    # • High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

****But unfortunately, I did not get the 9600m GT becuase I ordered the laptop after it had been removed. I had been looking foward to getting a high(er) end video card, as the 9200m is not much better than my old ATi x1400...

So, I was wondering if I should keep this laptop,

Or return it and wait for another 15.4 inch laptop with a high end video card.
The only things holding me back are that I got this setup for only $1005, and that I am not sure when HP will release a new laptop with similar specs.

    MAKE IT STOOOP!

This happens all the time, the sound keeps ticking as if I'm running my finger back and forth acorss the volume slider! The touch bar on the laptop itself is in a horrible place as it always is running very hot right there and sometimes doesn't recognize your finger' heat when its running hot enough.

Anyways, please for the love of me not throwing this laptop out in the snow pitch me an idea to make it STOP CLICKING! >.<

Click on the volume icon on taskbar, click on mixer, and mute quicktouch buttons...

And about faulty volume bar, I heard that new drivers solve this issue, but for me they did not. But since I installed Windows 7 beta, that problem is gone...

my 6 year-old desktop finally died (i did back my stuff up) so I ordered a dv5t several weeks ago:

    - Onyx
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P7350 (2.0GHz)
    - 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
    - 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - Webcam Only
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - Wireless-G Card
    - No Modem
    - SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

did a clean vista install, but frankly even with all the crapware it would have been fast compared to my desktop haha

also i was about to get a studio 15 instead but through this site i realized the dv5t can be faster for about the same money :)

Right click the desktop and select "NVIDIA Control Center". Then, go to Display > Adjust desktop color settings.

Any of the laptopvideo2go drivers are great -- I am on Dox's modified 180.84 driver for GTA IV and I have had no issues so far.

Just boot into safe mode and uninstall the driver from add/remove programs.

This is the ram I bought:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251

Installation took 5 minutes, Vista recognized it immediately, and it passed memtest86 with no issues.

    Hope this helps! :D

Thanks for the quick reply man, appreciate it.

    So, for the drivers..

    Download new driver.
boot into safe mode, uninstall nVidia drivers in control panel.
while still in safe mode, do i install the new drivers?

And for the RAM, is there any where on this site that has a little "how to" guide on installing the RAM? also, upgrading RAM doesnt void the HP warranty correct?

Your best bet would be to restart (back into Vista) to let the old drivers completely uninstall (from Safe Mode) and then just install the new drivers once booted into Vista, and then restart again. Your screen will probably be set to 800 x 600 with no driver installed when you reboot, so don't freak out its normal. Remember make Restore Points when you mess with drivers!!!

Here is a guide if you run into any problems:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=258626

I don't believe upgrading the ram will void the warranty, but I have the old sticks just in case I need to send it back for warranty repair -- they will never know if you swapped them out if you put the old ones back in.

I followed the DV5t manual form the HP site. I would upload the PDF, but the file is too big -- its on the HP site so it shouldn't be too hard to find.
