this may be a dumb question...
I recently got the hp dv5t, and have been playing a bit of WoW and warcraft 3. However, the frame rates i am receiving are not as good as i expected.
I noticed that by setting my battery settings to high performance, i get much better fps. Is there anything else i can do other than overclocking? such as tweaking with the computer settings? thanks!

thanks again man for the reply. I think I got the new drivers installed okay.

It was weird though..I got into safe mode and uninstalled old drivers. restarted and then installed new drivers (which took a little while). It then asked me to restart again and it was then just sitting at a black screen when I clicked restart. I manually turned off my laptop and rebooted. I checked to see what drivers were installed and it is the new one. Everything is working fine including a game I tried.

If the battery settings are at anything other than High Performance then everything in your computer downclocks itself to save power.

If you haven't already, do a clean vista install. If you can't do that uninstall everything that runs all the time. Virus Scanners are the worst, and they're completely unneccesary if you're not stupid.

    Update your video drivers.

    Defrag your HDD.

Turn off Disk Indexing (I've found the performance increase negligible and it kills the usability of windows search, others find it a huge speed boost)

My hard to remove remote seems to have fixed itself. I guess it just needed time to break in. Although it still shoots it out if I don't catch it, lol.

I was wondering if anyone else had an issue with the right mouse button being loose or too soft. It is hard to describe. If you press down both buttons to right before it clicks, the right button will be lower than the other one...

Also, there are a couple creaks on this notebook if you push on a couple places. like if you push right under the function key you hear a clicking noise. Also, the chrome trim on the side of the speaker clicks if you press on it. And the screen flexes a bit as you open and the hinge doesn't feel as stiff as i would like, but it stays put well once it is open. Don't get me wrong, these are just really minor things and I really love this notebook still. If I didn't have to send it on, I wouldn't settle for it, but these issues aren't serious enough to warrant sending it in and opening a whole can of worms. *sigh*

On a sidenote, my GPU never goes above 71 C, even after playing GTA4 for 2 hours. Is that temperature okay to keep playing with or am I hurting the notebook. I do plan on getting a cooler eventually (actually I am planning on making one, but that is another story) but I worry is I should stop playing games on this in the meantime? I currently raise the notebook on all four corners using plastic soda bottle caps at each rubber foot.

If I understand your question correctly: You can create recovery disks (once) from your laptop, using the recovery disk creation utility. This will require either 2 or 3 DVD/R's. You may choose not to create a recovery disk, as the hard disk on the PC has a partition that has data to reload your original factory image (of course, if your hard disk fails, having a partition with the factory image is not very helpful). Or, if you have an external USB or eSATA hard disk, you can use the Windows backup utility, or a third party disk imaging backup utility to back up both the factory image on the recovery partition and your main (C: ) drive. If you do that, you probably don't need the recovery disk (but you may need to create a bootable CD/DVD/USB disk, so that in case your factory laptop hard disk dies, you can boot & restore from backup).

I highly recommend having an external hard disk anyway, for backing up important data.

Hello, RoGuE1230, I like your plastic soda cap stand! 71C sounds fine to me. I've heard (this is hearsay) that the GPU can go up to 90C without harm. Of course, I've also heard that all nVidia GPU's are doomed. Doomed, I tell you, doomed!

Yes, it's a little flexy, but I never push in those areas during normal operation anyway... For me, the dv5t is really a portable desktop replacement (stays in the bedroom; may travel to the living room couch; may occassionally do a car trip & play movies to the kids in the back seat...). It's been fine for that for me. When I play games on it, my CPU may reach high 60's, but the GPU almost never gets above 65. (Of course, I don't play as graphically intense games, as my reflexes are middle-aged...)

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for the help about performance, and on the topic of heating, i normally raise the back of my laptop with whatever i have, but i would still feel better using a laptop fan. Anyone have a good suggestion for a fan that works well with the dv5t? I was thinking about getting a zalman NC-1000 cooler.

Hi! I have a really annoying problem:
I have wired LAN at home, but when I connect the cable to my laptop it says that it doesn't recognize the network! keeps writing me "unidentified network"...
I checked and there's nothing wrong with the network or the cable, with my desktop it works great. but why does my laptop refuse to recognize it? please help! :(

There's no issues with the dv5t network interface. I friendly recommend you to seek help on a networking related forum.

Does anybody know if there is a way on the DV5T to turn the screen off completely without closing it shut? That way the programs are still running in the backround but the screen is completely off. Trying to save on the life on the screen. I don't want to use a screen saver. Thanks for your help in advance.

You may have a virus or trojan that isn't being recognized by your anitvirus programs. try booting into safe mode.. press F8 while booting, before the windows progress image shows up. and you'll see several options.. try safe mode.. or safe mode with networking so you can get out on the net. i would then run your antivirus programs again in safe mode.. although it may not work.. worth a try though. have you downloaded anything in the last two days? it could be the problem, or some rogue program that you installed in the last 2 days.

if you go into the Control Panel, then Power Options.. you will see an option on the left:

" Choose when to turn off the Display"

you can choose from 1 minute to never on either battery or plugged in. that's pretty much the only way to "turn the screen off" without using a screen saver. Just as a side note though.. there is a "BLANK" screen saver that does pretty much the same thing, it turns the screen blank, and doesn't use any power to do it.

It say's "With an amazing 512MB's of Vram. The Nvidia Geforce 9600GT".
But there are no other 1160ed types? :)

By the way, 'Nederland' isn't always that great :p

Yes, that's correct. But I was wondering if there are other variants of the 1160ed ;)

Hopefully it has the 9600M GT :D

I just got my dv5t for like two weeks. It's working perfectly but I'm a little concerned with the noise level. I can hear the fan even when the laptop is idle. It's not very annoying but I'm just wondering if it is normal.

    Hi people,

Are there any news regarding the "flickering problem" with the dv5t HP laptops? I've been having this problems on two laptops, mine and my girlfriend's. Both were ordered on the HP website.

On my laptop, the screen flickers on dark screens... it just goes bright till it's completely white and that it would stay that way untill I move the screen.

Any news from HP regarding this problem?

    Thanks,
    Sagi

My laptop came in today and I wanted to get rid of some of the bloatware without doing a clean install of Vista. I was wondering if there is a list of what programs are unnecessary and that I should definitely get rid of.

512MB is half a GB and is an amazing quantity no doubt, but its utter waste for a 128-bit GPU like the 9600M GT.

We would all have a better (and cheaper?) graphic card if it were 256MB DDR3 but I believe HP chose 512MB DDR2 for the impression half a GB makes to the consumers.

If you want a black screen with no screensaver, you can select "none" in the Screensaver selection menu, and that's exactly what you'll have. ;) This way you can customize exactly when the screen goes blank, and the underlying application screen will come right back with a touch of any key -- without having to do anything else.

In the BIOS, you can set the fan to a different mode where it will only turn on when necessary instead of staying on all the time. The notebook will run a bit warmer but it will be quieter.

But yes, a slight amount of fan noise is normal. I don't know how sensitive you are to these type of noises, but I can barely hear the fan.
Even if you do uninstall the bloatware, you're still not completely getting rid of it. I strongly recommend doing a clean install.

Any of the games you see in the Add/Remove programs list are junk. As a general rule of thumb, don't remove any of the HP programs.

I called HP about my problem with the loose right mouse button and the creaking chrome trim on the side, and after 6 transfers, being disconnected, and calling back again, I managed to get a $50 credit. I realize now that if you are not satisfied with the answer you are given (such as being offered the DV5 Special Edition). I told them I really didn't want to send it in and I was persistent. HP support really is good, you just have to get the right person that understands you correctly. The first support person told me that it would be impossbile to get a credit because I used a coupon, and this was after sitting on hold for 10 minutes while she talked to her supervisor.

Does anyone have a link to the DV5 service manual?

I bought a DV5t a few weeks ago and have some questions. First of all, is there a way for me to make the start up time shorter? Can I overclock my stuff (CPU and GPU) without shortening the life of my machine? Is there a way to get rid of a lot of the bloatware without doing a clean install? (I have already installed a lot of stuff on here that I would like to keep)
I was also wondering what other people got for 3Dmarks (3Dmark06). I got 4514 3Dmarks. If you got quite a bit higher than this can you tell me how?

    Thank you!

EDIT: Also; If you had to choose a laser bluetooth mouse to game with, what would that mouse be? (I know wired mice are better for gaming, but if you had to choose a bluetooth one...)

Your 3dmark06 is right where it should be, I assume you ran it at 1280x800. That's what pretty much everyone gets out of the box.

As for a mouse, I'm not sure you mean bluetooth, most wireless mice use rf, all the bluetooth mice I've seen are sh1+ .

Though this might not matter to you as you probably won't be able to tell the difference, optical seems to perform better than laser http://www.esreality.com/?a=longpost&id=1265679&page=22 Your options for wireless gaming mice are kind of thin and expensive, the g7 would be my choice.

I posted a little bit of this on another thread, but i think it goes in better here. When running WoW / other games, or basically putting the CPU under load, it gets up to 78 C', and 70 C' after undervolting to 1.15 (default 1.25). Also, strangely enough my GPU raises above 65 C' when playing WoW. Is this right? someone made a comment about my CPU being unexpectedly hot.
I have the new driver for my gpu.

    Quick question,

I got my dv5t 4g 9600 GT, I used a Zalman NC1000 but I cannot get the notebook to cooldown the GC. I am playing Fallout 3 with the cooler at max speed and the GC still reaches 85C. Everything else is fine, I did undervolt which help a lot for the cpu... Any suggestion for getting the GC to lower temp?????

    Thx

You can use either a bluetooth mouse, or a regular wireless mouse. If you use a regular wireless mouse, you have to plug in the mouse receiver into one of your USB ports. If you use the bluetooth mouse, you don't need to, because the bluetooth receiver in the laptop talks to the bluetooth mouse.

    I hope that made sense...

    Good luck!

Hey guys I was thinking of over clocking my 9600 gt. I want a little better performance on counter strike source. Hopefully like a 15 fps boost? I play Css with details on high, no aa, HDR on full, and 1680x1050 res. and on some of the cal maps that use the HDR/bloom effect (like train) I drop under 60/50 fps at times. I would like to stay above 60 fps always if possible(over 60 fps is pefectly smooth for fire fights with no lag). Also when i turn HDR from full to none I get about double the fps I was with it on, which alows me to put some aa on. Which effect will make the game smoother aa or hdr? I know that HDR make the lighting effects from the sun look more realistic but what does aa do?

Has anyone over clocked the 9600 GT safely and saw it preform better and will this shorten the life of the card?

I need some directions of how to actually do it, and how much i need to overclock it for the best performance.

P.S. Anyone who plays Css with similar specs as my lappy let me know whats settings you use. (Specs are in sig.)

    Thanks guys :)

Correct, they're not the same thing. But wireless mice come with their own usb receiver.

You're not going to find a good bluetooth mouse for gaming, it's as simple as that. Have a look. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...2010290065 1083007046&name=Bluetooth Wireless

    Hi!
I tried to set the cyberlink youcam to work with msn messanger, but instead it doesn't recognize the camera when operating with messanger, and when I open the youcam (outside of messanger) it recognizes the camera, but all the filters and effects are gone! I don't know what happened.. I can't get them back... does anybody know what might have happened? and if I need to install youcam again, where can I find it?
    Thanks!

I don't think you're going to get 10-15 fps out of a small amount of overclocking. Anytime you're overclocking technically you are shortening the lifetime of your hardware, by what degree is hugely variable. But what it would take to get 10-15fps out of css would probably require a fairly hefty overclock.

My suggestion is that you change your graphics settings until you find a happy medium of image quality.

Smoothing is what antialiasing is about. HDR is about light effects, like you said. So if you want smooth graphics, turn the antialiasing on. You'll probably get smoother graphics with 1280x800 + antialiasing 4 than 1680x1050 + no antialiasing. From my little experience, the dv5t + geforce 9600gt can handle fine the antialiasing. I think the big memory (512MB) helps on that. Forget overclocking the video card. It already gets pretty warm.

I bought a Logitech Revolution Keyboard and mouse MX5500 bluetooth combo (I paid C$99.99 from Best Buy @ Christmas); the mouse, a Logitech MX Revolution Laser, is excellent.

I have a question here. Notebook hardware control says following:

My battery is on full charge

    Current Capacity: 61568 mWh
    Designed Capacity: 88800 mWh
    Fully Charged Capacity: 60147 mWh
    Wear Level: 32%
    Voltage: 12563 mV

Is this right? I'm alarmed that my wear level is 32%. I've only had my notebook for 2 weeks... Can somebody help explain? Thanks.

I would say something is wrong there. Your current capacity is greater than the fully charged capacity. Plus, theoretically everything should be perfect, but even out of the box you'll never get the theoretical maximum. I would completely ignore that.

I'm more worried about the design capacity, is that correct for the dv5t?

Most probably Notebook Hardware Control has false readings. 32% wear within two weeks isn't possible in my opinion.

Mine ordered DV5t with 9600M GT (I hope) still isn't arrived (ordered in Holland :p)
