Cathiw; sorry to hear about that. Another option (if it works for you) is to call Fedex and have them hold at the service center. You can then pick up the package from the service center (if it's near you). That said, if the rep leaves a note for the driver, you may be ok tomorrow. Cross your fingers...
Rozwell: Wow, man! I am in awe! I'd never have the guts to disassemble a brand new unit!!!
RoGuE1230: Congratulations! Hope you enjoy it!
Amerika: Congratulations too!
GraphxGrl: Sorry to hear that the 1680x1050 resolution didn't work for you. In my case, because I have a desktop at 1024x768 on a 17" display and a child with a 17" laptop at 1440x900, I knew that 1680x1050 on a 15.4" was going to kill me (and my bifocals). Sorry about that. Hope that you can get something that fits your needs. If you can tolerate the bronze case, you can still configure the dv5t with the nVidia 9600m graphics, though!
Re: Unbloatwaring: I distrust third party applications. So, I just uninstall software & move shortcuts & offers to a folder called "unused" (you can call it "bloat" if you like). For things like Norton, I'm keeping it until the "free trial" expires (or a few days before). Then, I'll download from Norton the utility to excise Norton completely; download AVG or AVAST-Free, and install one of those.
Re: Stickers: You folks are lucky. One of my children decided to put stickers on every single key on a desktop keyboard! Yikes! The "ice pack on top of the adhesive" method helps to make the adhesive harder, and easier to scrape off with the edge of an expired credit card. (Laptop should be off while you're doing this). For me, I don't mind the stickers. When the laptop gets to be maybe 7-8 yrs old (if you still have it), the adhesive gets slimy, and the sticker will come off by itself

I believe the bronze still has the 9600GT, if you like that color.

As I'm working through steps after reinstalling Vista Ultimate (32bit for now to alleviate any driver issues), I noticed that I don't have a 'Sleep' option for any of the power button settings.
For example, reference this web site:
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-change-your-laptops-power-button-functions-.html
I have everything but sleep, which means I either need to hibernate (no need when power is plugged in), do nothing, or shut down.
Is there some setting specifically for the DV5T to enable it so that Sleep shows up on the "choose what the power buttons do" Vista settings page?
Thanks (wish I would have checked what these default settings were before I started to see if it had Sleep there to begin with)
EDIT: Nevermind, somehow once some windows updates installed a reboot came, there it was suddenly. :O -
How do you find out what brand your display is? There are usually only 3 right? LG, AOC, or Samsung
-
I was wondering the same thing, but maybe I dont want to know since if it isn't a good thing (remember all the Samsung 22" panel issues? A game into itself), I don't want to have a reason to hate it
But I do wonder myself since Device Manager doesn't show it...just Generic PnP Monitor. -
Check its device ID in device manager. Mine says MONITOR\AUO8174 which is an AU Optronics monitor.
You can also get detailed info of what monitor with Everest.
-
Everest says mine is a Samsung 154AT07-H01.
-
I ordered on the 14th and it just shipped last night (19th @ 10pm), No estimated delivery on the tracking page yet but hopefully it gets here by friday on the 5-7 day shipping option.
Specs 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo
Nvidia 9600m GT
2gb ram
250gb 5400rpm drive
6 cell battery
everything else was default, I can't wait to be able to game away from my desktop
-
It should get to you by Friday. Mine shipped out on the 16th and I received it on the 19th. Just make sure someone is home to sign for it
-
And PRAY you don't have a problem - you can't return it and order a new one as mentioned above with a 9600M anymore, although you can send it in for repairs.
However, that would be like saving up and buying the dream car and then have it sit in the shop for 2 weeks a few days after you bought it.
Actually, I only buy Toyota and have my whole life but we bought American once (first and last time) in a Ford F150. ( Note: We're not for or against American made cars, we just put our money where value and dependability meet, not just having blind allegiance)
We owned it...4 days!...and it needed a new engine. I couldn't make this up if I tried. Brand new, yadda yadda.
We made such a big deal of it that we got a check written back to us for full amount as it was in the shop for over 2.5 weeks and we only had it 4 days. Not only that but putting in a new engine never feels right again.
We rented a car for 6 months, waited for the new Toyota Tundra, and have owned it for 10 years (2000 model bought in 1999 when they came right off the line) without a single...and I mean single problem. Best car ever in a long line of great Toyotas.
Ok so I digressed, other than still angry they removed the 9600M just to boost lagging sales of lesser designed, lesser value models, although I hope they soon realize buyers are more saavy than that.
I bought this as my first HP product ever (besides printers) because Dell has failed to improve their higher-end line with the technology and value available. But now HP has no options for me anymore minus the Bronze colored DV5T...for now. -
Okay, so I ordered mine last week and am having regrets about the 1280x800 screen. Is it ok and managable or should I return it?
-
I got mine today....Fedex left my laptop and took my note.
I am burning the recovery disks now, they are taking a long time. I can't wait to get started on things.
I got the 1280x800 and am very happy with it, it is perfect for me. I guess its a matter of taste, and eyesight.
-
thanks cathiw, Im sure it willbe fine. I cant wait. Anyone else have the 1280x800 and are happy?
-
I debated this as well to myself... I finely went with the 1280x800 and I am very happy with it.
I got this as a mid range gaming/home desktop replacement system and I tend to only like one window maximized at a time. Works great. Not to mention you can run games in the default res.
For work, where I have at times multiple windows opened and trying to cross reference information between them I like to larger res screen. Say like a 24" monitor sitting on my desk. -
So, I'm very happy with the 1280x800, but then, I'm rapidly approaching my second (or is it third?) mid-life crisis, and my third (or is it fourth?) bifocal prescription...
Maybe you ought to arrange swapping yours (when it arrives) with GraphxGrl?

Hey, I have just bought the dv5t with:
4GB DDR2 Mem
250GB 5400PM Hard Drive
Intel Core Due T9400 (2.53 GHz)
and 1280 x 800 BrightView Infinity Display
for only $1005, with a 30% coupon discount of course =D.
Bu there is one thing that irks me, I had to settle for the 256MB Nvidia 9200m because, for some odd reason, the 9600m isn't available...anyone have more information on the disappearance of the 9600m? -
It is there for the BRONZE color.
-
I'm considering buying the dv5t off of ebay, so that I can get the 9600 graphics card....bad idea??
-
Has anyone had problems with their touch-sensitive controls? I just got my dv5t today and the whole bar next to the power button is dark -- no volume, quickplay or wifi buttons at all. I called HP support and they had me try updating the BIOS (I already had the latest version) to no avail. Now they want me to return the machine, but as we all know, they don't offer the 512MB GeForce card anymore.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
--Brandon -
Yeah, the 1280x800 is great.
Does anyone else hvae an issue with the expresscard remote? It is hard to eject it and when you do get it to "click" it comes out very slowly and then shoots out a foot away. It seems like it is just a tight fit in the slot. -
If the lights are not coming on at all that is a worry.. you could always send it in for repair.. though they're known to scratch etc
The only problem I've heard of with the touch buttons is their lack of responsiveness and accuracy..
-
Actually it is, and the 9600m costs $40 dollars instead of the previous price of $50... that's strange. -
Hopefully, still no updates on fedex tracking, but I haven't used them in a while, do they usually update pretty quickly?
-
Do you know what the touch controls show up as in the device manager?
-
They don't come up as anything as far as I can tell..
-
Would anyone buy a laptop from ebay?
-
Sorry, can't read a thing! (my bifocals, you know?
)
-
Those are good temps, what driver versions are you using? My max would usually peak around 82 and then go back down to mid-high 70's once the fan goes into high. Though, I keep my laptop flat.
-
hdt: If you keep clicking on the picture it should get bigger.
I am currently using whatever driver it came with, I'm not sure which one that. -
Help!! Does anyone know about how to correctly remove Norton Internet Security? I have dialup and for some reason it was making things so SLOW. I remember this from when my mom had it with her dialup connection. Anyway, I uninstalled using the uninstall option in the program. Then I read that some people have trouble as it leaves stuff behind. So I searched for the Norton uninstall utility, but I dont' know which one to use. At norton's website there are some but it asks for your product id and version.
I don't want to install Avast until I completely remove Norton, because I heard that can cause major problems. -
Good news! Got DXVA (DirectX Video Acceleration) working properly with Media Player Classic. Now all movies work smoothly and won't consume CPU.
-
Try
ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
(You may need to type "ftp://" in front of the ftp.symantec.com...) -
Heh, thanks for the tip! 71 deg C peak is not something that I'd be concerned about at all. Your hard disk doesn't get too hot either.
I'd keep the rear propped up to help air circulation. I'd also buy a can of canned air, and use it once a month (power off; battery removed; everything nice and cool before trying to remove dustbunnies!)
-
I downloaded it but when I tried to run it, it says that it it not a valid Win32 application. What did I do wrong?
-
Did anyone notice that HP isn't offering the dv5t anymore? I went onthe website this morning and all they have is the dv5z or dv6t. Anyone have any idea why this would've happened?
-
wow it is gone...retired model already?
-
I was told by HP tech support to search for the "Norton Removal Tool" on Google.com and to use the first one that was listed -- the one offered by Symantec itself. I went through almost the whole list of them on Google.com -- and ended up using the Symantec download after all, because all of the others seemed to have weird bugs or idiosyncracies. Using the Norton Removal Tool worked really well, btw, and solved some huge tech nightmares that had occured when I had first tried to remove Norton using Programs and Features - and then installed Avast.com. Apparently there were some conflicts from leftover fragments of Norton on the system. Problem solved by use of the Norton Removal Tool. Good luck!

Follow-up on my problem with the touch controls, in case anyone is interested....
With the news that any replacement from HP would be a different model/specs than the dv5t I already bought, I decided to take matters into my own hand. I did a google search for "HP dv5t service manual" and managed to find the correct one on HP's website. Here's the link for anyone interested http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01550108.pdf .
I figured that since there was zero activity on the touch controls it had to be something related to a disconnected cable. I would expect something else if the cable had been at least plugged in. So I carefully followed the instructions to remove the switch cover and keyboard, where much to my surprise I discovered the cable for the touch controls was not even plugged in. I simply plugged in the cable, gently put everything back together, and now the buttons work great!

HP: 0
PS -- I do not condone taking matters into your own hand unless you understand the risks, feel confident about your abilities to put everything back together right, and understand potential warranty implications. Good luck! -
GREAT JOB!!! I can see where this might of occurred as I also disassembled my dv5t and when I put it back together I forgot to plug in the cable for the touch pad the first time.
-
Do you have the link by any chance? What version of Norton Internet Security comes installed?
-
if I open my DV5 and decide I should have went for the better resolution and faster processor, can i return to hp if its in the 21 days?
-
Normally, you could do it even if you do open it, unfortunately, the FV5T is no longer available.
-
is the T6400 @ 2.0 ghz considered to be a fast processor?? Will i see that much of an advantage if I go p7450?? I am word processing, web, email, music, video, and a little multi tasking but nothing crazy
-
I ended up calling fedex, and the rep told me the note said something along the lines of delayed for maintenance
Too bad, I would've recieved it by this weekend too.

i need to know how to create a recovery disk for my DV5
-
Click the "Windows" icon on the lower left corner; select "Help and Support"; type "recovery disc" in the search bar for "Help and Support". There will be a "create recovery disc" topic. Select the topic & follow the instructions.
A one page flyer is typically shipped with the computer that tells you how to do it. You need either 2 or 3 blank DVD/R (+R or -R, not RW!). -
Thanks for your help and links for the Norton removal. I have a Download Accelerator on the comp. I was trying to download from and it would not work. I don't know what it did but anyway when I disabled the accelerator program, the link worked, the removal worked, and avast is up and running. Thanks to all for your assistance. And for posting about the potential issues about not using the removal tool in addition to add/remove programs.
