Let's talk about drivers for the 9600M GT. What gives other users the best performance (8600M GT) sometimes sucks for us. I found that 180.84.1 are the best in both 3dmark and game benchmarks. 185.20 are the second fastest in games, but significantly (100 points +) lower in 3dmark06. 181.22 are garbage and I take a 40% performance hit.

How do I create another partition for windows 7? I currently have vista installed so is there anyway I could keep that installed, but then install Windows 7 to dual-boot?

EDIT: Figured it out! I am downloading Windows 7 now and ill report after I get it going.

I have the standard, hp-installed driver and i get 4514 3dmarks (06). I was wondering about this too, and what kind of performance gain you get from upgrading to the better drivers. So what I am hearing is that 180.84.1 is the best for gaming, but 185.20 is best all around?

You need to use a program to shrink your existing partition and then create a new one in the newly created unallocated space. I use GParted, which is a great open source program. Make sure to give yourself enough room in the new partition for Windows 7. I created one that was about 50 GB. You can also change the size and remove this partition at any point using GParted. You download the iso and burn a bootable CD to run the program. I have used it a few times with no problems.

Then install Windows 7 and select the new partition for install. (Be careful to select the new partition). The install will automatically set up dual boot for you.

I am glad you brought up this topic. Is there supposed to be a slider popping up on the screen when scrolling or touching the volume buttons? When I touch the volume buttons, the volumes does change and I here clicking, but I do not see what the volume level is.

I did notice that when I'm watching DVDs on the HP quickplay, the volume buttons will adjust the quickplay volume level, not the system's (computer's) volume level.

Can anyone tell me how to get the volume disply showing when using the volume buttons?

Yeah under Vista x64 you wont get the OSD thanks to HP's incompetency. There is a great program called 3RVX you can use for a OSD though and it's way better than the default HP one. :)

It was 1136 $CAN, but I also toked they extended 4 year warenty so total:
    1428 $Can tax included

    Spec:

    1280x800
    p7350 2.00 ghz (3m cache)
    nvidia 9600 gt
    4 gig ram
    320 gig (5400 rpm) HDD
    Vista HP 64 bit

I just installed dox optimized 185.20 and got 4524 3dmark06 score

This thing is really faster in game than my older laptop (go 7600: 1900 3dmark06)

    Wow.....I'm really happy whit it.

THANKS a lot to every one here, especialy Chaz. I've lurn a lot about this laptop in this forum.

Wow, you payed a lot for that. But I assume you are in Quebec so you have to pay the communist tax. In Alberta the same unit came out to $997 without the extended warranty.

True I'm in Quebec. The base price is the same: 997$ but we have alot of tax here  ...

The prize jump that much because of the 4 year warranty.

The warranty is also applicable to the battery. I think its a good deal since in 4 year I will probably have like 2 battery "exchange"... around the same $$$$ that cost the warranty.

    CharlesP

    communist tax... ouch...that hurt

ok, i feel kinda dumb asking this, but here goes. i just got my new dv5t from hp.com, and i immediately upgraded to 4gb of ram. i wanted to go into the bios and make sure it is all recognized and check the speed and timings. on startup, i hit f10 to get into bios setup. however, when i am on this bios setup screen, i can't find any place to change the ram settings. across the top i have main, security, diagnostics, and system configuration. i know i must be missing something incredibly obvious, but i don't what it is. any help is much appreciated.

I don't think you need to do anything in the BIOS; you just need to have Vista 64. Vista 64 should automatically see how much memory you have installed, up to the motherboard capacity.

Very nice - congratulations. Get the dv5ts while they're hot, HP has discontinued them so we won't be seeing any more.

The 9600M GT is a decent card. Make sure you elevate the back of the notebook while gaming so it can get better cooling.

Thanks 3D.Art and dannyres. I do have Vista x64 on my dv5t. It's pretty bad that HP cannot properly support the computers it builds to work normally.
I will check out the 3RVX program you mentioned.

I've had mine freeze on me when I changed the Power Scheme, and plugging in a mouse before. Twice when I changed power scheme. I'm not sure what causes it exactly. It only happened to me while I was using IE8 Beta 2 and watching some videos through a flash player. Did you have a clean install (did you format your computer and reinstall Vista)?

    A quick question.
If I copy the recovery partition on to my external hard disk, will I be able to use my external hard disk to recover my system to the factory settings should the need be?

    Thanks,

Just installed Windows 7- game performance seems exactly the same as in Vista, but I like it better regardless.

I have an issue with my WEI Primary Hard Disk score- it's a 2.0 (previously a 4.9). I tried installing the matrix storage device drivers but it didn't help, as well as disabling write-caching which gave me a 3.0. Are other people getting the same score?

It's official. After the DV5Ts very long reign in the NBR top 10 most popular, it has fallen to beyond 10. These are great notebooks. I still don't know why HP would make a dumb move in stopping it.

    ^^ thanks for the link.
so it seems that Left 4 Dead doesn't want to work with my computer and Windows 7. I load the map, maybe see the screen for a second, then it quits to desktop. Tried 180.84, 185.20, clean install, nothing seems to help. Anybody else with a DV5 have W7 and L4D working?

Why have they stopped make the dv5t? Plus I am deciding between the DV5T and the HDX16. I will be taking this computer on the move and I dont do any gaming or photo work just mostly internet, mirco office stuff, movies, and videos. The HDX16 is obv the more loaded computer and the price will be prob around 150 dollars more. Just want to know if I should go with the DV5T or the HDX16 if I want a portable notebook.

@Powersteam: They don't make Dv5t's anymore, we don't know why, for it was a very well selling laptop. I think that they wanted to up their profits, so people who want to game on the laptops have to buy more expensive laptops just like dell. Go for the HDX16 or look at another brand.

@ARom: They do still make the 9600m gt but only in the HDX16/18 and the Dv7t. It kind sucks...

I really don't enjoy Hp doing a dell.. My only Query is what will happen if My dv5t-1139tx dies Whilst under warranty? As in to the extent a major component need replacing e.g. motherboard, That'd force em to offer you a new machine but will it be a dv6 (with 9200m) or a hdx16?

There's no way to do that, the speakers are your speakers. You could play with the equalizer settings in software, maybe.

Any windows 7 users here find that their DVD drive isn't detected? I can't get it to be recognized to burn CD's. :/

    edit: fixed, iTunes conflict

If you laptop has a 9600MGT in, im pretty sure in saying they would have to offer you a 9600MGT or better. They surely cant offer you a lower spec as a replacement if it did ever die!

The closest would be the Dv5z, although it isn't quite as good in CPU or GPU. Another option would be to figure out your budget and start looking on sites like newegg.com. Also keep an eye on techbargains.com, they have some pretty good deals.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152086
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152087
and if you have the money
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001N44U94

If you have a very small budget, but still want a dedicated GPU try the:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220349
though it is pretty much the same as a dv5z

I would kill them if I sent in my Dv5t with a 9600m gt and they gave me back a 9200m gs...I really wonder if they would upgrade me to a HDX16 (awesome) or a Dv7t (not so awesome, that gets too big to lug around with you, like i do mine), or if they have some secret stash of dv5t's hid away for warranty-ers.

i think you can turn the fan always on setting to off in the bios settings (f10 at startup).

i just did a clean install of vista and it worked out great. now i want to take windows 7 for a spin, but i am having trouble partitioning a space big enough. i have a 250gb hard drive and got rid of the hp recovery partition. when i go to shrink the volume, it tells me i only have 11gb of shrink space (238gb total size). does anyone know why it won't let me have any more shrink space? thanks.

You have to search for drivers of older HP models and install them as HP doesn't provide drivers for XP on the dv5 series.

This thread should help you get started...

    HELP!

There seems to be something wrong with my dv5t. I brought it to a PC shop a week ago and they can't seem to find the problem! They said it has nothing to do with the hard-drive(s), memory, and others. They haven't tried checking the system board and the processors.

I have no idea what happened to my baby (!!!); I just got him a month and a half ago off eBay and it started acting up a week or two ago. First, it would freeze up when the desktop loads. I then decided to keep it hibernated instead of having to shut it down all the time. Second, I left it alone since I had to pick up my brother from school; when I came home, the screen was blank and the whole thing was frozen. I restarted it and it would go to the same black screen that says: A disk read error occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DET to restart.

Sure, I keep doing that but the same thing kept happening! I decided to do a system recovery -- that went through but as the laptop was installing drivers, it FROZE halfway. I pressed the power button and that's when hell broke lose. A pop-up would appear: Windows could not complete installation. Restart so it could install Windows to this computer. Or something along those lines.

    THE SAME THING KEEPS HAPPENING.

    What's wrong?

    Thanks~
