I used AVG for many years and never had any virus problems, see http://free.avg.com/. I stopped using AVG on two of my computers because AVG started having problems updating itself. I currently use the 2009 version of Norton Internet Security on all five of my computers (2 running XP and 3 running Vista) and find it to be excellent (much better than previous versions, less of a resource hog and faster); I also had to use Norton to connect to my corporate and university network.

Hey guys, I have had my dv5 for a while now, but I have been wondering whether there is anyway I can see how much battery life I have remaining in terms of hours/minutes rather than just a percentage. Is this possible?

    Cheers...

No, because all the touch controls and remote do is essentially press an arrow key- so if the arrow key would work, then pushing the button would.

Any idea why my computer slows down (a lot of CPU usage) and even crashes when my downloads go very fast (more than 6MB/sec transfer)? If I limit the download speed to about 2MB/sec, the computer is fine.

I already updated the wireless network adapter.

Could be your HD isn't that fast? 6 mb/sec is pretty much like copying files, so a DL going that fast would slow your computer down to write it to the disk just like copying a large file in the background.

Anybody tried turning off "fan always on" in the BIOS? My temps are usually 60C GPU and 53C CPU in my room, so I'm a bit worried I might raise those if I turn off the fan option. Getting sick of the noise, though.

would it be possible to install a wsxga screen into this laptop that previously had a wxga screen? i would be replacing just the lcd, nothing else. and if it is possible, does anyone know the model number of the wsxga screen that would fit a dv5?

Check if DMA is enabled for the hard disk. If DMA is disabled, writes and reads on the hard disk will consume CPU.

hi i'm from singapore. i've narrowed down my choices to the DV5-1034TX and 1036TX.

    differences i can spot:
    1034TX:
    - S$1,699
    - 2.0Ghz
    - 2GB ram
    - 250GB hdd

    1036TX:
    - S$2,599
    - 2.54Ghz
    - 3GB ram
    - 320GB hdd
    - Blue ray dvd

the biggest difference is obviously the cost, which amounts to S$900, and thats a lot for just a small difference in processor speed right? *small to me*. i don't use blue ray so its okay. the ram doesn't matter as a shop told me that they can upgrade 1034TX to 4GB ram for free. the hdd size is only 70GB more in the 1036TX. i'm wondering why 1036TX is like $900 more. is it because of the processor speed and the blue ray drive?

It might be a whole new chipset for that new processor, which could mean lower temps and longer battery life.

Do they have the same graphics card too? Make sure that you get the 9600m GT. Also, there's a negligible difference between the p and t series processors at the same clock speed.

Blu ray still isn't really worth having, because of the low res screen and the fact that the HP drivers are kindof shoddy.... and the HDD can easily be replaced on a later date.

    Hi all,

I've done a few searches on this topic and did come up with some information but looking for a bit more...

I'm looking at a dv5t special edition series notebook with a Lightscribe Blu Ray drive. I'm looking to use it also to connect via the HDMI output to a Sony HDTV. I understand based on my search that I need to ensure I have the right screen resolution set, that makes sense and is true on any LCD panel always. One concern I have is regarding the graphics card I've got selected (actually there was no choice as I went thru the build process)....it's the Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, so it's not actually a separate card.

My question is do any of you have this GPU with the Blu Ray and if so, how does it perform? How does it look on a 46 inch plus LCD HDTV? I don't think the GPU in the laptop necessarily comes into play when transmitting out to an external LCD HDTV anyway...

I've been waffling between this setup w/ the Blu Ray or a downsizing to the 13" dv3 for more mobility and blowing off the Blu Ray deal. Other way to go is to configure a dv4t with Blu Ray and a dedicated graphics card that will output full 1080p. I'd be willing to sacrifice some in the mobility area if the Blu Ray player rocked, with this GPU, on a good sized LCD HDTV...

Any and all input is appreciated, thanks!!!

My DV5t keeps on giving me shocks (like electrical ones) near the left side of the laptop. It often shocks me to the left of the tab, caps lock, and shift keys. It very very occasionally shocks me on the right side to the right of the home key, but again, vary rarely. On the left it will probably shock me every few hours I am on it. I was wondering if anybody else had this, and if they did, if there is any way to fix it, because they are annoying and cause me to pull my hand back, because of reflexes. Some of them actually hurt. Thanks!

I'm not sure, i haven't bought anything yet. I initially wanted a dv5t with a wsxga screen with a 9600m gpu and a p8400 cpu in it but they don't sell them with those options anymore, the 9600m isnt an option anymore, just the intel GMA. So my plan was to get a dv5t from ebay with the p8400 and 9600m card and purchase the screen separately and install it myself. None of the configurations on ebay have the wsxga option. IF that helps you at all? i also wanted to contact the guy who disassembled his dv5t to ask him some questions, but im not sure how to pm yet.
i'm just trying to do some research before i do anything.
    Thanks

I found my way into HP's parts store and you can view spare parts by model number. HP has service manuals that provide very detailed instructions on disassembling their laptops. The service manuals are mostly idiot proof.

If you want to check it out go here:

Jibe.....i've one word for you...grounding.....the socket you are connecting to does not have ground/earthing..... i suggest you relocate to another power port....or try another house...it could be some wire inside might have disloged thus sending current coursing throughout the chassis

Right after I read what you said, I plugged my cord into a socket and saw that it make a spark when I put it in. This seems like it might be somewhat related. I also realized that it only happens in the house I am at right now, nowhere else. Is there anything that I can use to make a grounding without having one in the house?

Laptop is running great HOWEVER, for some reason I cannot activate AERO Glass. Has anyone run it to this with a configuration similar to mine? I checked in Personalize-Color and appearance and no "windows vista aero", just basic, standard or classic.

My laptop has a performance score of 5.0, did the update on the score, still no joy, no windows vista aero selection available, rebooted, still not there.

Thanks in advance to anyone that knows the solution.

Alright I'm thinking I may have a slight issue with my dv5t. I have the 9600m GT and my temperatures seem above normal. At idle its around 68 and it maxed out while playing TF2 at 97. I don't have a cooler because I got layed off and it seems foolish to spend 60ish on a cooler when the fans inside should be able to at least hold it down. I'm not overclocking or anything.

I really enjoy the laptop but I only play TF2 and it seems silly for it to be this hot all the time.

My 9600m gt idles at around 45-55, depending on room temperature and what it is on (hotter on my lap than a table), and I have seen it get up to 80 something while playing Assassin's Creed an Oblivion. I don't know why yours is so hot.

    @fahad k

i'm not an expert but it looks like a ribbon issue or your screen is defective. either way you have to get it fixed. since its only been 3 months, i believe its still under warranty.

Grrrr, that makes me sad. Those temps I posted were when I had my window open and it was 15 degrees outside. It was freezing in my room just to take the variable out of room temp being a cause. I'm a poor college student so its not like I can just sell it and buy something a little better. It especially sucks because I spent from February to August researching laptops to get the perfect one.

I'm using CPUID hardware monitor. I have a 9600GT, 4GB, and a T9600 (2.53). If you could post any results it would be greatly appreciated. I'll have to do a full test later today to see exact numbers.

I just played for about 45 minutes I'd say and i was getting an average of

    CPU: 80-85
    GPU:90
    ACPI:90
    HDD:53

My CPU peaked at 88 and my GPU peaked at 96. Those temps were early on about 15-20 minutes in.
