P1990- No I didn't for two reasons, Did you?
Reason 1: I'm far to lazy to create and make sure HP Restore discs stay safe and I don't trust home made restore discs anyways. (if I did a clean install I would remove the restore partition)
Reason 2: I'm afraid a lot of the free programs that I do use that came with the laptop wont work. Such as all the Cyberlink programs. Also I can't decide wether to get 64 Bit or 86 Bit and if I changed I would need a new windows disc.
Edit: By don't work I mean i'm forced to purchase them.

Nah! I dont have an installer disc. Even if I had one I probably would not have installed as I am very very lazy and an impatient creature.
Now I am getting used to the bloatware....
But I still want to know the Vista experiences of dv5 owners who have performed a clean install. -
@ cammeron johnson:
When you say fan issue what do you mean exactly? oh, and nice truck!!!
Regarding the clean install, ill be waiting for windows 7! hopefully they will do the upgrade discs and will most likely go to win 7 64 bit. Any of you lot plannin on changing vista for win7? -
Can you really say "Vista" and "clean install" with a straight face???
I performed a clean install with XP pro and I love the performance so far. Boot time is under a minute. No DX10 but I can live with that. -
Got 96 celsius on the cores with Orthos running for a few minutes. It's a P7350.
-
I love mine
it's a great laptop!! and I love the bronze color.
it's a shame they stopped making dv5t's...
I also didn't do a clean install for a simple reason: if it's working - don't touch it. the bloatware doesn't bother me much. If I'll have a real problem I might do it.
what programs do you use for monitoring temps? I want to check mine too, but I don't want anything that runs on startup or takes a lot of cpu. what is the smallest simplest program for that?
btw - nice truck cammeron

I do
I am so tired of Vista! -
Hehe. You drifted away from the topic and I am responsible for pulling you further away from course!
Anyone here having FSX? -
Hey guys im running a HP Pavillion DV5 1050TX,Core 2 Duo P7350 2G Ram,320GB, 9600M GT
Im wanting to run Windows XP 32 or 64, how do i go about getting drivers?
look at HP site at Vista drivers, get names of drivers and search for XP ones? (E.G Audio drivers put model name then XP)

HP does not officially support XP on the dv5t so...

P1990 - It's a little early for me so this might sound stupid aha but whats FSX? wait is that Flight Simulator X? if so my brother has it for another comp and I was thinking about using his copy aha. but something tells me thats not what youre talking about
-
Yes! Thats what i meant. An awesome addictive game. But,its something my P7350/9600M GT combo cant handle very well...Just wanted to know FSX(Flight Simulator X(10)) experiences of fellow dv5t users.
1.One copy per computer
2.Two installs(reinstalls) on a computer
3.From third install onwards you will need to call MS
If you can,try it out. Please let me know how it performs....guessing whether a P8600 can make a difference(CPU intensive game). Your brother needs to deactivate his copy on his computer and then you can use it on yours. -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
P1990 - Ah well he won't do that aha hes in the Civil Air Patrol so he got it because they use it and he has the whole set up. But yeah no he is running it on an old Pentium 4 thats like 2.60Ghz and an old like 64bit graphics card. i cant believe it runs but I know it has to run better on this machine than that one.
-
Many thanks buddy, that helps alot, sick of vista crap and want the preformance of XP back..
-
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
Edit: Pertaining to performance Vista brought "clarity" to our world by pointing an "aero" of "glass" like clarity towards XP
While i'm not a huge fan of the look and style of Win7 i'm glad that the reviews i've heard performance and stability wise are good -
yes very tru, Vista looks brillant, but when it comes down to games, preformance and multitasking XP craps all over it.
Vista is good, but im using the laptop for General gaming, and stuff so XP is preferred ! -
same here... XP rocks
(at least till Win 7 SP1 is released)
I had the same concerns when I made the switch from Win2000 to XP. But Microsoft made the necessary improvements into XP to make it a great OS. I am afraid that I will not switch to Vista as it appears Microsoft is well aware of the issues with Vista and are accelerating the release of Win 7. By the end of this year.
I am glad to see that the Win7 beta is getting good reviews so far.
On a another subject, I have had my dv5t for about 3 months so far and I really like it. No complaints. Good Temps, good CPU, and an alright GPU for general gaming. -
Hey, I was given this link a while back regarding the drivers for my HP dv5 1139tx.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3834832&lang=en#
Now, do I have to download and install all of these to keep my lappie's performance up to scratch? I have gone many years without even knowing what drivers are.
Cheers,
Nehemiah. -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
Nehemiah - Your laptop came with pre-installed drivers so you may not need to install all of these drivers because some of yours may already be up to date. Reinstalling drivers you already have will not hurt your system only take up your time so if you arent sure if that driver is up to date go ahead and reinstall.
Your laptops performance can be increased by installing new drivers (not every time) but can be. usually Graphics, Audio, and Network drivers are the ones that will give a performance boost if any. If you choose not to upgrade your drivers your computers performance will stay exactly as it is now you will not gain or lose any performance due to drivers unless you change them. (excluding outside forces: virus's, spyware, hardware malfunction.)
Also not all of those drivers are for you just for your laptops model. Make sure to read what each driver is for before installing it.
Another note HP has a really nice tool called HP Health Check it comes preinstalled in all HP computers. Go to your start menu and open Health Check. It will scan your computer to see which drivers need Upgraded from HP's site and then it will upgrade them for you. If you choose to use it make sure to keep the computer plugged in the program will shut down if the computer is on battery power as a battery life saving feature.
Hope this helps. -
Thanks Cameron. I suppose I got myself thinking about drivers after my quick launch buttons started freezing (also, my speakers don't seem to work - I can only hear sounds via headphones).
Anyone know which specific driver I may /update to alleviate these problems, and/or whether there is another solution?
Cheers. -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
Have you tried restarting? (I know that's obvious but i've to ask) my DV5 has had an issue before where after waking from standby/sleep it will only allow audio via the headphones. It only happens every now and then tho. You could also go into the Audio panel and see what the default audio device is. you may have picked the dual headphone jacks as the default
-
It happens to my PC as well. Dont know what the issue is....
But,a reboot will cure the problem. -
Does anyone else find the 9600GT card in their systems to be defective?
I get this glitch on my screen all the time now. http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/05/nvidias-geforce-9600m-causing-issues-in-17-inch-macbook-pro/
The Macbook Pros have the same 9600 GT chip.
I sent my laptop on to hp for repair once already. They replaced the "thermal pad". I didn't get the same video problem for a month after I got my laptop back. But now I'm getting the problem again. I use a notebook cooler and I don't even play games.
Have anyone experienced this problem? -
Your HP 9600m uses a Thermal Pad? Interesting because mine does not. I opened it to upgrade the CPU and applied new Thermal paste to both the CPU and GPU.
I wonder if the the GPU is getting to hot. I have heard many users talk about high temps but I have not had a problem. (runs about 36C at idle).
Makes me wonder if HP used the 9200m heatsink (w/ thermal pad?) thinking it will be fine but then updated the heatsinks on the 9600m later in the product life. I ordered mine just a few days before it was discontinued. -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
Everyone including Savior- Just a reminder the 9600M GT card in the DV5 isn't the same as the Mac Book just as the article said it's designed to work with a 9400M at the same time. I'm sure to some extent the card has had minor changes atleast to work as Apple needed it. The cooling system in the MB is different so graphics card issues the Mac book has arent usually going to be caused by the same problem as the DV5 (making a system so thin results in bad cooling) What im saying is if anyone sees this post I doubt we are going to see a lot of 9600M GT's go bad in the DV5's like were seeing with the mac books.
Now onto the actuall issue.
Savior - I would call HP back up and tell them you are still having issues sounds like that graphics card is dying. any extra heat on a card causes its life expectancy to be cut short. if a bad thermal pad caused overheating to the card than HP needs to replace it. Graphics cards don't have major issues like this unless they're dying. In all honesty i've come to find that HP replaces thermal pads as a "quick fix" they're pretty much crossing there fingers hoping it fixes the issue. once you're noticing problems on graphics cards like this the damage has been done. I would ask to get a hold of someone you can actually talk to at HP and leave a note on the problems page they send you when you recieve the shipping box to replace the Card and that you've had this experience before if you don't they may just retry the thermal pad.
Everyone- Hey! since we were on the topic of FSX anyone here looking forward to SC2? -
I have an interesting question for you guys.
My brother in law bought a HP DV5T with Vista 64 by accident. He tried to take the mahcine back to Bestbuy but they were trying to charge him a 15% restocking fee. Well, I was wondering. Can we downgrade the VISTA 64 on that laptop to Vista 32? -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
You can't downgrade but you can reinstall using a 32bit vista disc but make sure youve a product key
-
my dv5t is still running smooth.. i did however install a clean(er) version of Vista 32bit... just haven't opted to redo it to a 64bit os yet.. (no time)....
i tried to install that aitkos version, but the disc wouldn't read correctly.. and haven't tried again in a while.. maybe i was using the wrong one??? any help in that area would be great.. i have ubuntu, xp and vista all humming along just fine.. now if i could get OSX going,, it'd be great!!!! ..as tony would say.
i haven't heard this fan (noise...problem)... i hope you all aren't just turning off the fan in the bios... that's bad...mm-kay?
(p.s. nice truck..) ...for a ford.

You can put XP on it, but you have to make a copy of the install CD with SATA drivers embedded.

I have installed Presto Instant On OS on the DV5
It is working wonderfully. the Wifi, Graphics, and Audio worked without having to download any compatible drivers. it ran smoothly and of course booted quickly. I will prob buy it if it is cheap when it comes out and use it when I just need to get school work done and dont need major windows Apps (since I can read and use windows files using presto ^ ^) its very nice like I said it works right out of the box and only took seconds to install. I will post screen shots when I can.
Edit: just fyi the quicktouch board obviously doesn't work.
Edit2: I hear it's going to cost 19.95$ there site says if you sign up for the beta you will get a discount XD I have to wonder how much they could possibly discount me lol
Edit3: Unfortunate theres a few flaws.
1. Presto does not read/update battery power status correctly. Example: it went straight from 100% to 56%.
2. Presto uses battery very very quickly. Example: It used 10 percent of my battery in about 3 minutes usually that takes about 30 minutes on my 12 Cell. in 30-45 minutes I was dead.
3. All Keyboard "function" key commands dont work. Example: there is no way to control screen brightness
4. Quick Touch doesn't work. Example: Do you really need one?
Note: other people are having the battery issues it isn't just me i found a post in there forums about it. -

I thought I'd chime in here to some of the 9600GT talk. I've had my dv5t since launch and in these last two months I feel like my laptop is ticking time bomb. I'm using a cooler when I'm at home which keeps the temps down but anytime I use it elsewhere it just go outrageous. If I start a video with vlc the fans start up and it gets hot fast. I got it back from repair and they supposedly replaced a heat sink according to report. They decided to wipe it too.
I'm moving back home soon so I may just sell this and get a desktop to go with my aspire one. -
Just wanted to chime in, mainly just get subscribed to this forum, but I just got one of these at BB and so far I really like. I already am doing a clean install of Win7 beta and was wondering for those who have done the Win7 thing what drivers/software are a must and what are really good idea and which are not needed at all. For example, almost everything worked fine, but copied the SWSETUP folder before zapping vista and any yellow bangers in Device Manager did an update driver and pointed it there. So now I have no yellow exclamation points. But do I need to make sure I get anything to make basic functions work? And do I need some updated drivers that Win7 won't register? Thanks.
-
They replaced the heatsink... interesting... do you notice better temps with the new heatsink?
I have a theory that on the early units HP used a thermal pad solution for the 9600m GPU. I think this is why the earlier users are seeing high temps.
My heatsink does not use a thermal pad but rather thermal paste. I know this because I replaced my CPU and re-applied Arctic Silver to both my CPU and GPU.
I hope you are seeing better temps with the new heatsink...
-
i was just wondering, my idle temps of my dv5 is around 27C for both cores and my max temps is around 57C. are those high or low? i'm using rmclock to measure the temps.
i have a P7350 with 4gb and 9600gt -
oh yeah those temps are without a cooler pad thing or raising my laptop any. it is set on my wood table flat.

Anyone know of a slot loading optical disc drive that would work on this puppy?

For anyone experiencing IE 7 crashes:
I have had IE 7 (32 bit) crashing intermittently on my HP DV5 Vista 64 bit laptop since I received it a couple months ago. I have found the "offender".
In IE manage add-ons, disable "HP Smart Web printing" (there are 2 entries, disable them both and no more IE 7 crashes.
I did check to see if HP had an update to that add on but nothing avaliable, so disabling is the only solution.
Hope this helps someone. -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
If you want to use Internet Explorer I would install IE8 it was released to the public just a few days ago. altho I do recommend a switch to Chrome or Firefox which are both faster than IE and run wonderfully.
-
HP Smart Web Printing is not compatible with IE 8, so upgraders to IE 8 should uninstall or disable HP Smart Web as well.
I think I will wait a while before upgrading to IE 8 as IE 7 is working great now.
You would think that HP would fix the HP Smart web bug....nothing on this subject on the HP support pages as far as I could see. -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
Condorll- Thanks for the correction.
Everyone - So I decided to record my temps using HWmonitor while playing Need For Speed Carbon. I didn't realize how hot this system gets and yet I dont have any loss in performance.(settings were full with everything in the NVidia panel also turned all the way up for graphics.)
(DV5 Rocks) anyways the mobo temp can get to 213*F the GPU can get 206* and the 2 CPU cores score around 200*. idk why but i thought that was pretty cool
edit: AA is off.
Ok I need help. Both of my HP remotes aren't working. (the two slim ones) i checked the batteries and theyre fine. I havent used them in a while it could be a driver issue. any idea which driver i should use?
Also who wants to help buy a laptop? Heres the deal my sister is buying a new laptop and has put me in charge of finding her one of course "find me one and ill hand you my credit card" well does anyone know of any good deals? i've been looking at HP's. The laptop needs to be as cheap as possible but with the highest specs for the price. anyone know of anything good? -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
Hey guys im actually having a problem. My DV5's audio stops working sometimes after resuming from sleep/hibernation. anyone have any solutions
-
@cammeron johnson, I would recommend the Laptop which the topic you are now (DV5T) (and also own yourself) however it seems as if it is unavailable.. Nice work hp, but anyway perhaps a dv6? with the ati cards that are now available, but do you want your sister to live with the 16 x 9 screen??
Just quote a price range as it will help us in the choice of helping you hunt.. Plus perhaps the AUS$ dollar version as I am lazy in regard to conversions..
@Cammeron Johnson, I am not having any issue's with sleep, in regards to the audio. however a different issue I have is that if i go into sleep, upon waking if I go to run supreme commander, it instanly crashes.. A restart solves that though.
hmmm have you updated the audio drivers? if you need driver help
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=338874
Is a good place for the latest driver info.. well its updated more regularly than Joss Whendon and season 2 of firefly anyway, I have heard of the dv5t having issues with sleep anyway, I find it easier to simply shutdown, I mean my DV5T boots in about 25 seconds so its a teency odd thought away from simply waking up.
On other notes I would Like to continually say thanx to the god of notebook wisdom, for enticing me to do my research before buying a laptop.. Saved me a Toshiba A300 and about $300 bucks at the time, hehehe and compared to todays prices on the same spec's around $200 for something the equivelant of. -
@cameron johnson
i am having the same problem. havent found any solution yet. have you sloved this issue? -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
Regarding the audio issue the onlly solution i've found is to go into the audio playback devices control panel and disable all of the devices in that panel and then reenable. Still this only works about 75% of the time and if you have a window or program open (Example IE, Firefox, Chrome Etc.) then you wont get audio from those windows until you close and reopen them.
Regarding the new laptop. As cheap as possible really what im saying is who has the best cheap laptop. (I personally do like HP and I love the DV5 its what my sister wants she has seen has seen mine used it and loved it but since it's unavailable yeah) But yeah shes a college student and in my family you have to pay for your own schooling so she doesn't have a lot of money aha.
but yeah i just want her to get the most for her money. so if anyone sees something like this (Example: Dell 2ghz 160gig Vista Dvddrive 500$... and then an HP 2.2Ghz 160gig vista dvd drive 500$) that extra .2ghz would be nice so just trying to milk the cheap laptops aha.
