i sorta have the same problem with the audio. the audio would work with some programs and not others. for instance work in firefox watching youtube videos but not work using VLC watching movies, or vice versa. I usually just restart my computer and it works perfectly after that. Also when using headphones in the dual jack, sometimes it seems as if there is a loose connection and i get no sound, but just fiddling with the connector solves this.

i also have a couple of other problems. I'm not sure if it is a USB problem or the hard drives, or anything else. My friend has a portable WD 500gb hard drive. I tried to hook it up to my computer and nothing was recognized, i also tried to hook it up to another dell e1505 and wasnt able to recognize. but it was able to be recognized on the macbook pro where it was originally used. I have no idea why it wouldn't be recognized on the PC's but be recognized on the mac.

Also my computer goes into sleep mode after about 5 minutes of being inactive. i tried to change the settings by clicking the battery options and change it to never going into sleep/hibernate and it always seems to do this. Any ideas? thanks.

I have that problem with the power manager as well. Try changing the settings in advanced mode. Also, every time you install a new display driver, the power settings will reset.

I have lots of audio problems in Win 7 whenever IDT is enabled, when I go to the sound control panel it says "IDT is causing a conflict, should I disable it?" and after I say "yes" it works.

Has anyone noticed a high pitched noise from the CPU on their dv5t? After some research I believe this is actually a common problem caused by the CPU going in and out of power save state. Other brands may also have it but only when using a battery. On my dv5t it's constant.

Tried a few ways including RightMark, adjusting power options, but none works.

Sent the notebook back twice and the repair people didn't seem to have a clue. The machine comes back exactly the same way - they didn't even bother to test it after "repairing".

I believe that is a known issue with Intel processors. The high pitch whinning of their processors. One of the smaller advantages of owning an AMD machine I guess.

Before I call HP and have my laptop sent back i wanted to check in to see if anybody else has had this problem. And sorry if it was already discussed. I have a p7350 machine with 4gb ram and the Nvidia 9200 GS card. I notice this issue getting worst. The screen will flash black with multiple scan lines running through it. When it goes to screensaver it will do it the whole time which is where it just used to be. Now it is when i'm just online or using programs. It doesnt appear to be a lose connection. I can move the screen back and forth and it wont do it. i havent dropped or spilled anything in this machine. At times it wont do it for a few hours and then after it will be every 15 seconds. I'm gonna update the Nividia drivers and see if that helps. Thanks for any responses.

I need the best driver for a 9600 gt (Specs in Sig.) I want it to boost my fps as much as possible In Counter Strike Source, so if there is a specific driver for "gaming" for the 9600 gt, then I want that one.

Does anyone know of any that helped them?

    Thanks

Btw. I have windows vista 64 bit.

I too have this whine; however, I only hear it if there is no other noise.
Since I listen to music and play games a lot, I don't notice it, but when there is no background noise, I can hear it.

As a follow up to my own question I realize this problem happens when there is a lot of black on the screen. The screensaver is a black background which is why It's constant. Could this just be a dying video card? Thanks.

I'd try these. Dox's drivers are generally the best for gaming.

I have had my dv5t for awhile now and love it. However it seems that my battery continues to discharge while the system is off after shutdown. It seems that I loose 5-6% capacity each day that it is off so that after about 2 weeks of not using the laptop the battery is fully discharged to 0% from a 100% charge.

I'm hoping that there is some hardware flaw that is draining the battery but if all dv5t's do this I guess I'd have to live with it. I've updated all the drivers and bios as well as do all the battery conditioning and power options that HP recommended but with no success. I also have tried Windows 7 and Ubuntu but that doesn't change anything.

Is there a workaround or solution for this or am I forced to send it in? Hasn't been a year yet so the warranty is still in effect.

Generally, Dox's drivers will get you a higher minimum frame rate, which will help keep the game running smoothly. Keep in mind drivers can only make so much of a difference. It might not be very noticeable unless you keep a constant watch on your frame rate.

Hey guy's i'm trying to use HTML code in my sig but unfortunatly it isn't allowed. Does anyone know of a way to convert HTML into bbcode or vbcode so that I can use it on this site? (I found a website on google it didn't work). The Trillian Image at the end of this message is what the sig code should look like.. Kinda sucks. but yeah anyone know of a way?

Ahmed AbuBakr Aziz - The laptop can get VERY hot while Gaming I have gotten the Graphics card to 206*F and the CPU Cores to around 200*F each While the Motherboard gets to about 213* (theres a screenshot below). Now while these are very high temperatures they aren't going to immediately damage the laptop. Every degree does shorten the life span tho (The Colder the Better) but unless you game All day every day I doubt you will ever see any problems related to the heat. Normal operating temperatures are way lower (even more so if you make sure to keep it in open are and not directly on a lap or bed/chair) I own a dv5 with the 9600M GT and the 2.4Ghz dual core so my temps are about as hot as it would get. the 2.53Ghz Dual core CPU might get slightly worse but only by a couple degrees. anyways I doubt you will have any trouble.

I heard the NIVIDA 9200GS 256MB DEDICATED can switch between integrated graphics and the dedicated card. Is it true?

And another thing i'm looking to buy a laptop. I ve narrowed my choices down to two. dell studio 15 and dv5t. they both have pretty much same specs(my configured versions) only the graphics card differ. dv5t has NIVIDA 9200GS 256MB while studio 15 has 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450.
    which laptop should i get?

the 9200 does not switch to integrated in the dv5, i believe that is the 9500 in the dells (9200 + integrated = 9500, lame name system they have).

sttray64.exe is the IDT audio tray icon that sits on the taskbar. If you stop it the IDT audio control panel icon will disappear from the taskbar.

    Hi. new here.
I got this laptop couple of months ago and heating wasn't a problem for everything i did. But i've been playing some games on it recently, and it gets HOT. So i'm gonna buy a cooler for it and zalman seems like a good one. Is zalman good for this laptop? if i get it, should i get 1000 or 2000?
    Thanks!

NC2000 is effective.I have a Belkin cooler...the wavy design one and is quite effective...
Are u sure its heating up in recent times or did you not not pay much attention it it before? If you think the problem has cropped up recently...take it to the service center to get the heatsink checked.

That happened to me when I restarted my HP laptop after I installed Comodo Internet Security. I got pretty worried about that, so I uninstalled Comodo and the problem went away.

A few weeks later, after I updated every driver in the laptop, I installed Comodo again. The problem didn't come up at all after the restart, so I'm guessing that the cause of the problem is a program you installed recently, and to fix this problem, update your drivers, especially HP QuickPlay, Quicktouch, and HP Quicklaunch Buttons. I'm not exactly sure which drivers fixed the problem, though.

Here's where I downloaded the drivers that prevented the problem: Also Incidentally, The Best thread for Drivers for the DV5T

P1990 - Hey, Hows it going!? :) My pickup truck project has unfortunatly stalled. I haven't had a lot of time. What's cool tho is I actually get to test for my license today ^ ^ If I pass my friend tyler and I are going to use my truck and go up camping in Utah (altho were going either way it's with a group but we would prefer the truck). The coding i've actually been looking for a fix on. its embedded HTML coding but unfortunatly this site doesn't allow HTML in sig. it should look like this. <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://www.trillian.im/widgets/TrillianStatus.swf?user=Cammeronj&theme=platinum" width='400' height='64'/>.

But yeah so what are you up to? how have you been? :)

Edit: Failed the test, Going in on standby tomorrow. Messed up on the parallel parking.. I've done it a thousand times and this was the time i messed up?

Hey i'm having yet another problem >.< i believe its a software issue. Whenever I download a video and play it the audio slowly loses sync (the audio passes the video up) by the end of a 20 minute video the audio can be ahead by a couple minutes... Anyone have any fixes?

Edit: After two restarts audio touch is white again.

That's for posting this. I too have this problem. I also have Comodo installed and the problem probably started after the install. I will try the same thing. Although for some reason now the mute light touch button does work every now and then, but not consistently.

Actually that might be the problem, i never thought about that. Because, I played the same game on demo and it didn't heat up as bad and it cooled down quickly before, but now it's loud and stays hot and loud even after gaming. And even when I just turn on the computer and don't play any games, the computer gets hot faster and runs louder(i'm not sure if just installing the game makes it do that..if that's normal)...

I got the same problem. I concluded that it was because the drive itself has a little room to shake, so it vibrates a LOT. At least with mine.

does anyone possibly know when HP will refresh the DV5t? I am really interested in it, but a few things are holding me back. I would like the option of having an LED screen as well as a dedicated video card instead of integrated. why did they pull the 9600M GT out of it? Option for a fingerprint reader would be nice as well.

These options (except for a decent dedicated video option) are available on HP's smaller laptops (like the DV4), I don't see why they can't be on the DV5t.

    P7350 - undervolting

    Guys,

I just want to report I had success undervolting the P7350 from 1.250 to 1.150V using the Crystal CPUID software. I haven't tried any lower voltage, but I'm very satisfied with the achieved decrease in temperature (about 15 degrees Celsius).

Well I wouldn't call it a problem, it only gets hot during graphic intense gaming. In all honesty the amount of performance this laptop cranks out with the 9600M GT makes it an amazing little machine (Atleast if you game) i'd say if you are a gamer get the 9600 if not get the 9200.

The DV5t has been discontinued by HP. The only DV5x model left is the DV5t SE which is a basic spec notebook, with only Intel integrated graphics available. HP replaced the mainstream DV5t with the DV6t a few months back so there will be no further updates to the DV5x line. I suspect once those DV5t SE are sold out they will not be restocked.

really? its still available in India... there is now Special Edition but both the dv5t and dv5z are available... Do you mean that there will be no more 15" laptops from HP (not compaq)??? I think 14" is too small and 16" is too big so if there was no 15" i would go to another company!

You can see this thread for the discussion about the dvt5 being discontinued. You should also know that since then HP has also discontinued the dv5z as well and replaced it with the dv6z. So for now at least the only 15" notebook you can get from HP (that is not a compaq) is the DV5t SE. Probably the reason why both the dv5t and dv5z are still available in India is because they still have some in stock.

Hey guys, I'm new here (as you've probably seen on my post count) and I recently purchased a DV5. I've had some software problems like the "heart attack" issue where the windows is stuck on "Installing updates *something* 3 of 3". Another issue was when the columns in windows explorer were blank and I couldn't open various options in the control panel like Power Options or Fonts but I resolved them. Now the only problem I have, which I figure every DV5 has are the touch sensitive controls. From time to time they become overly sensitive and for example the volume continues to increase even after I've taken my finger off the button. I figured it's because of the static electricity that keeps building up in there, so after I took out the battery for a couple of mins and put it back everything is back to normal.
The temperatures are pretty stable - an average of 40 to 50 degrees CPU temperature when I'm browsing and the highest temp I've seen is after a few hours of Unreal Tournament 3 - 85 degrees (celsius). Which I guess is understandable for a laptop after playing such a "heavy" game.
The notebook scores 4572 points on 3DMark06 (on 1280x800 res - everything else on default) and completes the wPrime 32M benchmark in 33.128 secs.
Overall I'm happy with my purchase and recommend it to everybody else who is searching for a notebook right now.

UPDATE - It works! I uninstalled Comodo, then installed all the updated drivers, reinstalled Comodo and the mute light button works.

Now if anyone has a solution on how to the the volume control level onscreen when adjusting the volume touch controls... anyone? :)

I woudnt buy the dv6... so if i want a dv5 i better get it soon!!! thanks for the links!!!

yeah its too big for me, and 14" is too small so I would rather go for a dell studio 1555 if the dv5t normal edition was not still available in india :D... but this also probably means a price drop because of the last stock in india!

Anyone have experience with the upgraded warranty? (accidental protection warranty for 3 years, paid like 300 for it when I bought the laptop from HP)

I dropped my laptop DV5 and busted the LCD and cracked the outside lid. Will they just replace the LCD screen or will they send me a new laptop? Considering the DV5 is now outdated, will they give me a choice of laptops or send me something of their choosing? How long does it take?

I have a T9400 cpu, 9600gt video card and infinity display with the 1600 x 1040 resolution, bluetooth, fingerprint reader and would hate to see something with crappier specs then what I have now.

    Thanks for your anticipated input!

hello everyone, I have a US dv5t-1000 I've been going through about 400 of these pages now...lots to read lol
so i was wondering what the port under the panel highlighted in this picture is for? it kinda looks like a mini pci-e but I have no clue, what can I connect to it?

I know its not for ram or hard drive (and wifi card), its next to the ram enclosure tho

I was also wondering if anyone had an experiance getting the 802.11b/g broadcom wifi card working with linux

and yes.. the wifi works well with linux.. Ubuntu 8.xx to be precise as to what i tried it with.

According to the dv5 service manual that panel covers the mini-card module compartment. In this compartment you would usually find the TV-tuner card if your model came equipped with one.

thanks, would it be compatible with other mini pci-e cards?
more specifically, would I be able to stick a SSD in that slot?

also, more specifically I'm using debian

I have accidental Damage Protection too (only 2 years here) and I was wondering about that. I have yet to have something happen to my computer, but I was wondering hypothetically. I once brought this issue up to a up person, and they said that they would send you a computer that is comparable to yours, or something like that. They were VERY vague. This is how it went:

    I asked:
Then the HP customer support person, Wendy said:
    It wasn't very definite.
