    That is not 100 percent accurate. My HP DV5 struggles with some of Vista's drivers. I cannot install my chipset drivers.

    Correct Not all Vista drivers are Windows 7 Compatible. While some will work it's a hit and miss.

    Do any of you have a problem where the wireless doesn't turn on? I've tried turning it on both through software, and touching the button. The wireless works under Ubuntu, but not under Vista. It doesnt give any errors, it just never turns on. I have all the latest drivers too.

    P1990 - I havent gotten any recent pc games altho i might buy the crysis pack. I have tho purchased some games for my modded 360 (modded as in added/changed fans and new thermal paste NOT as in cheat or steal mod.) Games I own for it include Halo3, Gears of War 2, Army of Two, PGR4, and Ridge Racer 6. The Truck is an Automatic.

    Hi, everyone
    i don't know if my question belong to this thread or else.
    first of all i bought my dv5 two weeks ago with following specifications:
    CPU T5800, 4 G. Ram, Nvidia 9600GT (512), 250 G. HD
    my concern is CPU temp.
    when idle temp. is:
    GPU = 48C
    CPU = 42C
    HD = 38C

    but under load (3D Mark 06)
    GPU = 72C
    CPU = 78C :(
    HD = 40C

    T5800 thermal threshold is 85C, therefore 78C is very close.
    N.B.: i use generic cool pad and raise my laptop back as recommended in other threads.

    ANY SUGGESTION!!

    Thanks in advance

    Wkbag- If you are really worried about your temperatures you can always undervolt/underclock you cpu and gpu. In all honesty tho I wouldn't worry I've listed a few reasons why below.

    1. The cooling system in the dv5 works as such. One copper piece of metal is the heatsink it travels across the gpu and cpu which means if the gpu is extremely hot the processor can have a harder time cooling down because the heatsink is already hot from the gpu. That brings me to point two.

    2. Your system will never have the GPU and CPU running at Maximum usage at the same time other than when you benchmark with 3DMark. and even if it did it would only be for a split second. This means that the copper heatsink isn't having to take all the heat that it does in 3dmark from both the CPU and GPU at the same time.

    3. You are still 20*F from being at your "Max Temp" Which is probably rated at a lower temp just to be safe anyways. and

    4. My CPU and GPU get WAY hotter than yours (see pic) and they're fine I don't even get any artificats when gaming (screenshot was taken when playing NFS Carbon at MAX Detail with vsync so it could prob get even higher with 3dmark.) (TZ01 is the motherboard btw)

    5. Once again your temps wont get that high durring normal usage because both the CPU and GPU aren't used to full at the same time.

    6. Your PC Was designed to operate the way it is if HP did make a flaw with yours they will fix it. (This is assuming you are still under warranty)

    WOW.
    and i think my temp. was high.
    what is your processor, as p series has more thermal threshold than T5800.
    Today i reached CPU temp (83 C) during rendering which is 2 C below thermal threshold for T5800.
    is there anyone using T5800 with similar problem.
    thanks for your replies

    You are correct I am using a P8600 (2.4Ghz)

    The Thermal Threshold for this chip is 105C so average my 91-97 and your about 20*F away just like yours (and thats not even durring benchmarks). HP has designed these laptops to run this way. Hope you find the answer you're looking for.

    i found a way to drop my hdd and other temps a bit. open the little doors for the ram hdd and whatever the other one is for and rip off that little screen covering the air holes. it dropped my hdd temps by about 5 degrees but theres no sensors for the other stuff but its probably running cooler

    for thermal sensor u can use "speed fan", or "CPUID" to find different part temp.
    my first concern before buying this NB is GPU temp. but to my wonder my problem now is CPU temp. which get very high and fan became very loud during gaming (Mass effect) it even reached 85C while GPU didn't go beyond 75C, i tried everything possible, i raised my NB back, tried NB cooler but without much difference.
    i am afraid i won't be able to use this NB during hot summer days.

    I just installed Windows 7 and I think i'm going to continue using it as my default OS. It's running so much faster than Windows Vista did! everything is smooth and quick even my net searches are faster and i'm using the same browser I was using in Windows Vista ( Google Chrome). File transfers are also quick I got a new 500GB Seagate Go Drive last night and i've been transfering files from my old drive (250GB worth) its going pretty quick.Windows 7 is an amazing OS. If this keeps up Microsoft will have once again in my own opinion redeemed Windows.

    Hi!
    I don't know if my computer runs hotter than it should, so I checked my temps on idle -
    GPU - 52C
    CPU - 42-46C
    motherboard - 51C

    is this considered high?
    I have P8400 and my gpu is 9600M GT

    Thanks!

    With a T5800, undervolt + NB cooler don't help much IMO. The only way to keep the heat down is MX-2 apply directly to the heatsink, the thermal paste that HP used is really cheap and it solidify after a short time. So applying MX-2 shave off a great deal of heat but u also need to remove a ****load of screws. After apply MX-2, my T5800 lower from a 82C to 65C on load.

    I have a dv5-1017nr laptop with 1280 resolution. I want to upgrade to 1680.

    For the owners of the dv5 laptops with 1680 resolution, is your screen matte or glossy finish? When I order a new screen, there is the matte or glossy finish option. Which one is better?

    I have the 1680 Gloss finish it is very nice some people say its to reflective tho. While it seems really reflective/shiny when you first get it you get use to it and it just seems nice. atleast for me aha

    I have a question for people who have disassembled the dv5t. Is there a thermal pad on the cpu and gpu or just thermal paste? I want to replace the compound on the cpu and gpu but only have thermal paste and i dont want to open the laptop only to find out i need to get a thermal pad.

    I would definitely go to Best Buy (or some other store) and take a good look for myself at the difference in the screens. I absolutely hated glossy screens before I got my dv5t, and I still get a little frustrated with the reflections (although I've learned to tip my screen down to avoid most of them), but I really love it now, and am glad that I ended up with the glossy screen. Wouldn't want the Infinity display though - way, way too glossy and reflective!

    By the way, are you sure your dv5 comes with both glossy and matte screens? I didn't have that option when I bought my dv5t in December -- and at that time I searched everywhere for a matte finish.

    Do you know what I think hell is like? I think hell must be like taking apart DV5T's and putting them back together for all eternity.

    GPU temperatures only seem to be about 2 or 3C lower after removing and re-applying heat-gunk.

    Once apon a time I had an Inspiron 1300 sure it was crap... but one screw holding one panel on revealed the heat sink... 4 screws in the corners of heatsink reveled cpu and one lever released the cpu.... man I wish it was still that simple... lol

    You literally have to break it down into every individual component, be very careful with disconnecting all the wires and ribbons.

    My older Lenovo had a panel for the heatsink and CPU. My DV5T reminded me of the Powerbook 2400c. Nobody will know what I'm talking about, but it's exactly like that.

    edit: Oh I forgot to mention, I have 4 blue screws now that I didn't have before since I took it apart. Hope they don't hold anything important together!

    I haven't seen a windows machine run without drivers so smoothly ever. Even when I use to use vista whenever I clean installed i had to burn the Wireless N drivers to disc to install them... Windows 7 worked immediately the only thing that hasnt worked is the fingerprint reader.. (and i havent installed the driver) but everything ran fine without drivers and then windows update flawlessly updated all of them but the fingerprint reader and possibly lightscribe.. even the quicktouch board worked! :)

    Right now my laptop doesn't have the 1680 but I want to upgrade to it. When I go to HPs part web site it gives me 4 options for screens, 2 lower resolution in matte or glossy and 2 higher resolution in matte or glossy. My current setup has the plastic cover over the actual screen. I was wondering if I could actually use a glossy screen with the plastic protection over it or will it be too glossy? Thank you in advance to all who respond.

    Hey guys...I just got my DV5tse today with the 1680 screen. What annoys me is that none of the pre-set resolution option is 16:10 other than the default 1680x1050, which is abit hard on the eye for everyday activity. I just want to use something like 1440x900 for everyday and only use 1680 when needed. Anyone know if that's possible? Sorry if this is a newbie question...thanks in advance!

    Guys, 1066MHz is DDR2, not DDR3. Did anybody upgrade the memory to 1066MHz? It's something I'd like to do some day to match the processor's FSB (P7350).

    Did you try to update the graphic card drivers? Also, you should use the highest available resolution and increase the size of everything. I know it's a pain to increase font size and everything on Windows. You know, Windows 7 will come with a nice feature for this purpose.

    Thanks for the advice. I did try increasing the DPI, but it only seems to make a difference for the desktop, and doesn't make a difference for webpage fonts. To be honest it's kinda retarded that the only 16:10 resolution is the default 1680x1050 and everything else is distorted. I wouldn't mind 1440x900 for sure if it's available.

    Fortunately, there's still a lot of additional adjustments you can make to increase font and display sizes in ALL areas. Here ya go:

    1. DPI - Right click on Desktop, Personalize, On Personalization Page, go to left column to: Adjust Font size – DPI, DPI Scaling: Click on Large scale (120 DPI), and click Apply.

    2. At the lower right hand corner of every IE web page, there’s a Zoom control that lets you increase the size of every web page, and it stays at that Zoom setting for every page. I keep mine at 125%.

    3. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, General, Accessibility, Select Ignore font styles specified on web pages, check boxes and click OK, then Apply, then OK.

    4. Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, uncheck all three:
    Reset text size to Medium for new windows and tabs, and
    Reset text size to Medium while Zooming, and
    Reset Zoom level to 100% for new windows and tabs

    5. Open Internet Explorer, click the Page button, click Text Size, and then select the size you want i.e. Large (Largest may be too large).

    6. Ease of Access Center – Go to: Control Panel, and Explore all settings. Under the following heading, Make things on the screen larger, select: Change the size of text + icons. This takes you to the dpi settings screen.

    7. If you have a scroll wheel on your mouse, use command/ctrl + your scroll on a web page to increase the font size.

    ( Open Internet Explorer, Internet Options, Appearance, Fonts, How to ignore present fonts - The notes refer you to numbers 2, 4, 5 and 7).

    Are those drivers only for those doing a clean install? I tried to install the Intel graphic driver but it have some compability issue and tells me to contact the laptop manufacturer for drivers, but the one on HP's website is a much older version :(

    Out of curiosity, how much of a performance difference would it make between the two speeds 800 mhz and 1066 mhz?

    Since the motherboard/chipset does not support 1066 memory, it will be down-clocked to 800 mhz. You can check this by using cpu-z or any other program that detects memory speeds.

    But the actual difference between the two is very small.

    I finally changed the thermal paste on the dv5t. The stock paste was really crappy and hard and it pretty much flaked off. I replaced it on the gpu cpu amd northbridge. The cpu temp dropped by about 5 degrees and the gpu dropped over 10 degress. The only problem is that taking it apart is incredibly annoying you have to take everything out in order to get to the cpu and gpu.
