You didn't happen to take any photos, did you?
-
Unfortunately not. I actually had to take it apart twice since in a moron and forgot to plug in the fan the first time and had to do it all over again. The cooling design in really crappy. The heatsink for the gpu had an aluminum base and the screws that hold it down dont apply enough pressure. The cpu cooling is much better copper based heatsink and 3 clamping screws. Any way its a pretty worthwhile thing to do if your comfortable taking the laptop apart. HP has a site that has videos on the disassembly.

I'm trying to read my HD temperatures, but it doesn't show up in HWMonitor. Do I need to install a new Bios? The same thing happened on my dv4t. Couldn't read the HD temp. I'm this has been asked before. I searched for it, but didn't find it. Thanks!

then mine must definitley have a problem...when gaming it gets so hot that u cant even put ur fingers on the vents for more than 5 secs....and thats when i've elevated it......and sumties on a hot day....it will overheat and shut itself down....
-
also...........i have no idea wat my dad did but now my bluetooth is disabled in the wireless assistant menu....and when i check device manager i cant find the driver...av searched google and cant fint it......i got my dv5t bak it september so went for the
Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN and Bluetooth
option.....
sum1 help.....i need my bluetooth... -
Your dv5t most likely carries a Fujitsu hard drive and the Fujitsu hard drives that HP use do not have carry a built-in temperature sensor; so you will be unable to get any temperature readings from the hard drive with any software.
-
The dv5t has a really poor vent design, that's what the laptop overheats alot. My suggestions are voltage downclock + notebook cooler (the best IMO is Coolermaster Infinite), that can let ur laptop run at 60+ idle i belive (if you have a T5800 chip). The other way is to apply TIM to the heatsink which can be a b**** for every1 ..... I did all of the above and the heat lower at 55C in 30C ambient which is a major improvement from 70+C from before
-
i'll luk 4 a cooler but probably wont find one here in jolly old HOT africa...dont no how to voltage downclock...plz explain and i have the T9600 chip...
and as for opening it up.......aarrrghh!!.........i dont tink i will but mayb...TIM being that thermal paste stuff or wateva??
dont tink al find that here....but al have a look... -
^^First download the RightMark CPU clock utility.
-
i have that now....cant find an voltage downclock option.......
-
i need advice please.
how do i take the keys from the keyboard? meaning how do i pop it out? i'm afraid that if i pop it in the wrong direction, the locks might break. -
Can you upload some screenshots?

I just upgraded my HD to a 500 gb 7200 RPM Seagate Momentus. I am booted into a fresh copy of vista and have most of my drivers installed. I tried running HD Tune, but it is craping out on me. The drive speed is hovering around 10-12 mbs and occasionally jumping up to 75 and then dropping down to 3.5 mbs. Is there some driver I need to install or something to get the drive to perform right? I did the HD Tune error check on the drive. Everything was green.
It also gives me a warning when I go to the "Health" tab. It has "Spin Retry Count" and "(B8) (Unknown attribute)" highlighted yellow, but both of their status's are "OK" like the rest of them. Overall it says the health status is "OK" and is green.
HD Tune is also giving me a temp warning telling me that the HD is at 55 degrees, which admitedly is warm, but is it hot enough to worry about?
Thanks! -
Hello again hp dv5t owners. A while back, around thread 3990, I mentioned my laptop had been flickering. I got the unit back and it was fine, for a while. Then it started up again. I sent it in once again and it came back with a note saying they replaced the screen AND motherboard. But the thing was still flickering, and still does. This will be my third repair attempt. At what point will they just replace the damn thing??
-
I believe it's after the 3rd repair, but when you call in, you should request it - if the problem is serious enough, they might agree. Also, just to make sure they actually, really understand what it is that needs to be repaired, some people send them a note explaining the symptoms of the problem, and a video demonstrating the problem.

Has anyone else been having trouble with the remote? The volume buttons on mine have ceased to work. The arrow buttons work just fine though...

Anyone having problems with Windows updates? When the windows update is installing, it may install a component during boot up.....but for some reason mine started freezing. I went back to a restore point, but when it was updating again it would still freeze. I ended up doing a full recovery and starting over.
After installing everything again, I'm finding that sometimes when my computer sleeps I cannot access the internet.... what's up?! Anyone have these problems and have a solution? Thanks in advance. -
Just this past week my newish HP dv5t notebook (purchased in December) stopped loading Windows Vista after the bootup screen with the HP logo. It would simply stay as a black screen while the lights on the keyboard were on and the fan continued running. I downloaded an HP troubleshooting guide and went through all the steps, i.e. running BIOS and testing the memory, hard drive, etc. I also took out the battery and unplugged the AC adaptor and pressed the power button for 30 seconds to let out any extra power, as guided. Finally, I also attempted F11 system recovery, but the screen just froze at BIOS.
So I called HP and the tech had me do the same things. Then he said I had to order system recover disks for $21, so I begrudgingly have done so. However, he said my data would be lost when use the disks, which sent me into alarm. They said there’s nothing they can do, that I will have to take my notebook into a technician to recover my data. Very frustrating. My question is, can I recover my data from my hard drive myself? Would an Serial ATA 2.5 notebook hard drive enclosure work? If so, is that the correct kind I need, any recommended brands? -
Yes, all you need is a simple 2.5" drive connector.
-
When your computer sleeps, unnecessary components such as the wireless card and the bluetooth are switched off to conserve power. Therefore, you won't be able to access the Internet when the computer is sleeping. Btw, how did you even navigate the desktop when the screen is also supposed to be switched off when the computer is sleeping?
If you want to, for example, leave your computer on while it is downloading something, you cannot put your computer to sleep as that would cut the Internet connection. What I did is go to Power Options and told the computer to "Do Nothing" when the computer lid is closed. -
Sorry for any confusion. I cannot access the internet wirelessly after I wake the computer from sleep. After it wakes, I'm usually able to quickly get back onto the web, but there are times when pages are just stuck trying to load after wake.
Then I later get an error on Firefox saying that it is offline. But I check under the "File" menu and it shows it is online, the wifi is connected to my router. My only solution right now is to reboot.
Any advice? Thanks in advance -
If the physical parts of your hard drive are broken, you may not be able to recover your files without giving it to a Hard Drive specialist to recover the data with special tools. If your hard drive is still working but the files/Windows OS are corrupted somehow (i.e. virus, spyware), then this is what you need to do to get your files back: 1) Buy another 2.5" sata hard drive. You can get one of these at newegg for $50-90. 2) Get an external drive encloser, which cost about $15-20. This would be safer than just a connector cable. This would also provide you with an external HD to back up your data in the future to guard against HD crashes. 3) Swap your new HD for your old HD in your dv5t. 4) Install windows vista with the recovery files on your new HD. Just insert the disc and follow the instructions that pop up after you start your computer. 5) Put your old drive with the files you want to recovery in the HD encloser. The HD encloser allows your computer to read the HD once you've loaded into windows with your other drive.
I'd personally recommend upgrading to the Hitachi 500gb 5400 RPM drive. I have the Seagate 500 GB 7200 RPM in mine and it runs pretty warm. The Hitachi should run cooler. -
Hi!
I want to connect my dv5 to the tv via hdmi, but in the tv manual it says that the tv supports only a particular range of frequencies. how do I find out my computer's frequencies? (sorry if my question is dumb, I have no knowledge in this field) I don't want to buy a cable and then find out it's not working...
has anyone here done that with the dv5?
Thanks! -
UPDATE - Ok, it's not just when my computer sleeps that my internet access locks. It's also when I'm on for some amount of time. I was online for about 2 hours using Firefox 3.5 latest beta release. Then all of the sudden my pages are just sitting there trying to load... forever. When I exit firefox, the process is still running in the task manager. I try to end the process, but it doesn't stop (after waiting about 10 minutes). So I try to restart, it takes about 2 minutes to start shutting down... I assume it's because it's trying to kill the firefox process.
So my question now, is this a Firefox 3.5 issue? Any have ideas?
I'll search the Mozilla web site for answers too. Thanks in advance. -
No problem. Any HDMI cable will work. I would recommend getting one with 4/5 stars on Amazon.com for like $5, which is very cheap compared to Best Buy wanting $100 + Tax.... unbelievable.
-
I have the exact same problem!! I was going to post it here, but then I saw your post.
for a long time now my internet suddenly stops too... and nothing but reboot fixes this. I use internet explorer and it also doesn't close all processes, and doesn't respond when I try to end it in task manager. and then it takes the computer ages to reboot.
I tried to use google chrome but it has the same problem, so I don't think it's a browser issue...
I have another weird syndrome: when the internet suddenly stops, only (and only) gmail still loads normally. also all internet programs still work (like messenger skype etc). at first I thought it was a dns server issue (and gmail was in the cache or something) but the problem persists even when connecting through different networks.
I've wrecked my brains out how to fix it but I can't find the answer
oh, and in case this helps, it has nothing to do with wireless, because I use ethernet at home and it still happends...
Please give me an update if you discover something! -
I'm sorry to hear you have the same problem... but I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one. I never had this problem in the beginning. It only started because I did a full system recovery on my notebook.
So here's my latest update (BTW I still have the problem)
1. called HP tech support. Tech took control of my notebook remotely and played with the browser settings. Still had problem.
2. Called HP again another day, Tech told me to use the Norton removal tool to ensure all components of norton were removed, since I only used the windows uninstall. Felt good that it may work, but I still have problem. Tech suggested I may have to send it in under warranty (still on my std 1yr wty).
tal12586 I am with you 100%. It is only the browsers that freeze up. Email (Windows Live), windows update still work while the browsers don't. I'm going to call HP again within the next couple of days, because I cannot use my notebook like this. It's ridiculous. So I may have to end up sending it in for repair. I'll keep you posted. -
thanks!
I also didn't have this problem at the begining... and I didn't do a system recovery. maybe it's some software or driver conflict. if you want, we can compare stuff installed and see what we have in common.
I know it may sound stupid, but can you check if gmail works when the internet gets stuck? because it's the only site that works for me when all internet and browsers stop working. Let me know if it does.
Oh, and the problem is not directly connected to browser processes getting stuck, sometimes the internet stops when no process got stuck, and sometimes processes do get stuck and internet is still working (like right now. I have a 220MB ie process that refuses to end) though it's only a matter of time until it will stop... -
here's my latest HP tech support chain...
So I called last night, the tech first thought it was spyware, but I told him that I have not installed any odd programs so I quickly stomped that out. Then he suggested its a corrupt recovery files on the D drive (recovery drive). That all it takes is one corrupt fileto potentially cause problems. He said I needed to order a recovery CD to fix it.... cost $30. I was trying to push for him to let me send in the notebook for warranty repair, but he said they wont take it unless there's a hardware problem. I asked what would be next if the recovery CD didn't fix my problems. He tells me there is no next, that was the solution... he personally guaranteed it and would pay me back if it didn't work. So I called him out on it and asked for his personal information so I can send him a bill when it doesn't it work... shortly thereafter he hung up on me!!!!!!!! I was pissed. Called back again and started an investigation on that guy... unfortunately, he did not record the call on my case #. But the next tech support guy is shipping me the recovery CD free and put a note on my case that I can send it in for warranty if it doesn't work.
**** Key note - the last TechS guy said not to install the Vista SP2... lots of problems and even MS is offering free techS for it. He also warned not to install IE8, that there are still a lot of bugs.
So I'm thinking maybe it's a Windows update that is causing these browsing problems.
BTW Tal - I have to double check on the gmail freezing up. I think it does freeze up, but I also think it did work once a while back on my initial freeze ups. My plan is to go back to a restore point, before any windows updates were installed and see if I have the same problem. -
Honestly any brand would work, but yes just learn how to remove your hdd from your dv5t and then put it either in a 3.5 sata enclosure, or a 2.5 enclosure, either works fine. Then you just plug into windows and it should detect it as a regular external hdd

Okay, my computer broke recently, but it is under warrenty, so all is good. The one thing I am wondering is that I bought ram to install my self, which I did install. I was wondering if I had to replace the ram currently in my laptop (the ram I bought third party) with the ram it came with, or if they will accept it and fix it with the third party ram still in it? Thank you!

Has anyone tried the Street Fighter 4 PC benchmark tool? I'm not a PC gamer but this is one game I was looking forward to be able to run on my laptop and was kind of disappointed with my results. Maybe someone out there with the same laptop obtains better results with different drivers etc.
Here's a link to the download: http://www.atomicgamer.com/file.php?id=78920
I have a dv5t with a p8400 and a 9600m gt by the way. -
Seriously? I ran it 1280 x 800 with everything on high (no AA) and it ran 60 fps vsynced, totally smooth, didn't drop below. I have a T5800, 2ghz. 4gb ram on Windows 7
-
I had this problem before ie8, so I don't think it's the problem... (I installed ie8 with false hopes that it might fix the problem but it didn't..
)
recovery sounds like it might work. but only as a last resort.
I still think it's a software conflict that's causing this. if it was something like windows update than a lot of people would have this problem.
let me know if the restore point works, and about the gmail issue (maybe it's gmail!
)
-
Nice, that's what I was hoping to get on my laptop. Maybe the processor really makes a big difference, what driver version are you using?
-
I did try gmail when everything froze. It doesn't work. I'm able to open some emails, but I think they are cached. Because when i try to delete, gmail gets stuck loading. I got an email confirm for the recovery disk, I hope to see it shipped soon and in my hands. I'll keep you informed.

Hello People,
I wanna purchase the HP DV5 however my local store here has the 1280x800 resolution model...i want 1920x1080...is there any third party LCD panel that i can buy and fit on my laptop..screencountry.com has a lot..which one can fit on the hp?? -
So, I (sort of) fixed it, it ended up being two issues. One was broken sectors on my hdd and the other was a memory issue. Now I tried running the Primary Hard Disk Self Test and I got past the quick test with no issues. Now I am stuck on the full test. It had been running for about half an hour and no progress has been made. It is still at 00%. It said it would take about 71 minutes, but as I said before, nothing has made any progress. Any suggestions?
UPDATE: I can't even quit the test by pressing Esc. I guess the only way to quit would be to manually turn off, but I am afraid that might corrupt data. -
i wanted to know if there is any facial recog. prog. that the DV5 can run in VHP 32Bit, i was following a thread which was on this , but despite multiple attempts no one there or elsewhere answers
one other thing, after reading options that ppl here have used with the 5100 has given me the capability to actually push n speeds (although sporadically) but atleast it is N speeds rather G speeds
i was hoping that this fix would correct the issue i was getting with slow vista folder access wirelessly as well, i literally have to wait upto 8 minutes for VHP 32bit to see the all the programs contained therein as it tries to build the icon database.....no i did not clear out the icon cache, so iwas wondering is there any fix
i have the WMU 6500FS (yes it was supposed to be a poor man's NAS with BT capabilities, and i must say it does quite well)...incidentally the wife's netbook running XP Home has no trouble what so ever accessing or reading files on the networked Drive....... so....any ideas....thanks -
I bet it's the driver version, later drivers work much better with newer games. Older (pre186.12 versions) have weird stutter and slowdowns on CoR: Dark Athena so it might be the same with SF2.

i am thinking of upgrading my home router and computers to wireless N. I bought my dv5t with the wireless g card. Is it possible to upgrade my dv5t with wireless N by purchasing this http://www.laptopking.com/kingpartdetails.asp?ref=2843&category=boards? Or will I not see that big of a difference if I bought the N router and left my laptop with the wireless G card?
-
Both your router and wireless card need to be 802.11 n in order to see a performance increase.
-
well yes and no
first of the true N card you might want is the intel 5300 3 ant. mimo, vs the 5100 which has 2 xant. so you'll want to hook it up with 3 antenna inside your laptop (if you get the 5300) in my opinion the 5100 is a problem child of intel N series wifi cards...the 4965ABGN is much better with similar features (methinks)...secondly the combo (router plus wifi) you need to reach N speeds is pretty wide....cuz' we have trouble maintaining N speeds, security and connectivity with existing PreN or Draft-n hardware..... -
how much does the cards cost for the dv5t?
-
Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this same problem and might have some insight into how to fix it:
My brother has a dv5t running the F.16A BIOS with a 9600M GT. I think he has the P7350 processor. During normal use, the machine works great. However, GPU-intensive applications crash between 30 seconds and 30 minutes of starting them up, giving an nvlddmkm.sys driver error. Sometimes the application recovers, but usually it crashes to the desktop or simply hangs the entire system and requires a hard restart.
I have read extensively about the nvlddmkm error which has been around for years and seems like it can be caused by any number of problems. I have tried a number of different things (complete OS reinstall, memtest check, etc.) and think that it is actually a thermal/heat issue as the computer gets very hot to the touch immediately before crashing.
The weird thing is that GPU-Z only reports a max temperature of 70C before my applications (specifically COD4:WaW, a video card stability test run, or testing with rthdribl) start crashing which I don't think should be tripping thermal protection limits.
He is running the F.16A BIOS which has the same GPU BIOS as F.11 (which is supposedly OCable) and is running the 186.03 NVIDIA drivers.
Any help or suggestions you all might have would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible that this is just a bad chip and I should RMA it before the warranty is out? And does anyone know what the thermal protection limit is for this GPU? I think I read 127C in one post, but think that was in rivatuner.
Again, any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -
Which media player is compatible with the quick launch buttons on the DV5T? I've noticed that they work especially well with windows media player. I can be in another program and still control my music with them. However, I dislike WMP's interface and it has limited compatibility--doesnt always work with some of my music.
Itunes had no problem capability wise but it always felt a bit bloated. I also didnt like the way it managed/reorganized my music and the quick launch buttons wouldnt work if itunes wasnt my window of focus. -
Media Player Classic is compatible with the QuickTouch buttons, but it must be the window of focus for the buttons to work. I don't see any problems here as to watch a movie, MPC should definitely be the window of focus.
With this small plugin called mmkeys, the QuickTouch buttons will now work with iTunes even if iTunes is minimized to the system tray. If you still don't want to use iTunes, Songbird is a music player compatible with the QuickTouch buttons. -
Thanks alot. I think ill use itunes as the use of QLB was a major concern. Just another question. How well does winamp work with QLB?
-
Not sure about that. I never used Winamp before as iTunes is good enough for me. Any other music files that iTunes can't play (FLAC for example), Windows Media Player covers that area.

UPDATE on my problem of the internet browsing freezing (Firefox and/or ie), while other internet access features still work.....
So I got the recovery CDs from HP and completely wiped out and reinstalled everything (main partition and the recovery partition). After a week of using and slowly installing all Windows updates, my notebook is working fine! No problems, no browser freezing. Woohoo!
Seems like 3rd try is the charm... I'm just glad to have everything in order again.
