REAL PLAYER -- Generally considered a sleeper, but it's a great little all-around music and video player. And thanks to your asking what media player is compatible with the Quick Launch buttons, I have now discovered that the buttons work with videos played in Real Player.

I haven't tried making my own recovery disk. The tech support rep said that there must be corrupt sectors on my HDD, particularly the 'recovery' partition. That's the reason why I keep having the problems when I do a full restore. He had no answer for why I got it in the first place. He said the recovery disk formats both partitions and re-copies the recovery programs/data back onto the partition drive (good sectors)

You may want to try the full recovery route. Having the laptop freeze after an hour of use makes the it unusable. Good luck. If you try a different route with success let me know!

I'm ready to take a loss and throw my DV5t out. I posted a while back that i was having videio issues with my notebook. I have a geforce 9200 in it. I was getting flashes on the screen whenever the color black would appear whether it be a screen saver or video or webpage. Eventually the problem got really bad to the point that it would just flash and have these white bursts that would freeze the screen. anyway I sent it back and they said in the repair sheet they replaced the system board. I have it back 2 weeks and its starting again. The only thing I've done since getting it back is update all the drivers in my machine including the bios. i got everything from HP. Is there anybody out there that can help shed light on this. I'm not even gonna attempt dealing with HP support again. Luckiliy I already had gotten this to an HP case manager. Thanks for any help.

Hang in there stratguy, don't throw out your dv5t just yet. After three repairs you can ask for a NEW machine! And here's something you might start thinking about -- with dv5t's no longer being manufactured, HP will have to give you something "comparable," so it might be a good idea for you to start researching what similar model you want to ask for.

Thanks. I talked to them again and they didnt say the number of fixes before they replace it but they did say they would if its eventually not resolved.I booted the laptop with a linux live CD and I had the same video issue. It must be the LCD if they have already replaced the system board once. The weird thing is it worked fine for a week before this happened. Last time it took 4 months.

I'm having trouble with my fingerprint reader. The DigitalPersona Personal does not work after turning on the laptop for awhile. I tried locking the laptop and swiping. It wouldn't work. Could it have something to do with the heat?

Hi, i was wondering how i could use my tv as a monitor. Currently i have a HDMI connected to my TV and all i could get to show up on the TV is an extension of my current desktop. I was wondering if i could somehow us my TV as my primary monitor. Also i remember my roommate could close his laptop and still have the TV as his monitor. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse so i will be able to use them if my laptop is closed. Thanks.

    Hello all,
Sorry if this is not the correct area for my question:

will a DC Jack that was used for DV5-1007cl work on an HP DV5t-1000us?
wanted to make sure it works on my laptop before I burn it

    One more thing:
HP part store does not have a DC jack part for my DV5t-100 laptop. They say it part of the motherboard and I need to buy the whole motherboard.
But when I open the laptop, the DC jack looks connected to couple of scews to the MB, not soldered.

Where can I buy this piece from?

    Thanks

Hi all, I have a dv5-1099nr and I'm using Windows 7 RTM 64-bit and I was wondering which driver for the quick launch touch buttons would work? I am using the Vista 64-bit driver and it works, but when I press the mute button, it doesn't turn orange.

    Thanks in advance.

Go into your display settings and set the TV monitor as the "primary" and your LCD as your secondary. It's that simple.
Now, the TV will be your main monitor and you can use it as such.
However, make sure you also go into your power settings and make sure that you "lid closed" setting is not set to "sleep" or "hibernate". This will then allow you to close your ltop lid and still use the TV as you main monitor.
Also, make sure your set the monitoring as a "clone" NOT as an "extended desktop", which is how your setting sounds to be. If you don't see the same thing on your TV as your LCD and you can run the mouse pointer onto your TV, then you are in "extended mode", which is great for video editing and other software, but not good for making your TV the main monitor. It's easily corrected though.

You'll also need to work with the resolution settings to get the best image on your TV as it depends what your TV's native resolution is just like any other LCD monitor.

I connect my DV5 using my HDMI output to my Sony 60" LCD projector TV.
It makes for cool viewing on some things. I especially like Skype calls using the BIG TV and the sound is also much better as it's coming through the TV's speaker system.
Of course, if you're watching a DVD or a downloaded movie then the TV is the only way to go for excellent viewing especially for a large group, your friends and family will LOVE it.

I did an in place upgrade from Vista Ultimate 64 bit to the RTM version of Windows 7 Ultimate and during the upgrade, it mentioned that I would have to uninstall the button drivers and then reinstall after the upgrade. I did this (using the HP Vista 64 bit drivers) and the buttons have been working fine in Windows 7 for me.

That is not a problem with Vista or Win 7.

If you keep the Win 7 default driver installed or u install the latest driver from HP for the sound chipset then the light will not turn orange.

For me personally, I did not install the quick launch buttons driver, nor did I install any audio driver. and everything works perfectly!

    Win 7 FTW!

All I hat to install are the Intel Chipset drivers, JMICRON Drivers, nVIDIA Forceware, and HP Wireless Assitant!

Other than that! everything works out of the box

Hi, I hope this is the correct place for my question:

I have a HP DV5t-1000, and accidentally broke the LCD screen (15.4", 1280 x 800 res). My friend has a DV6000 laptop which is also 15.4" and same resolution screen, and his laptop has a damaged motherboard.

I thought I could replace my broken screen with his functioning screen. Is this possible?

If the two screens are not interchangable, I have found several good replacement screens on Ebay. Then my only issue is opening the HP Dv5t and replacing the screen.

On the DV6000, I can easily open the screws and take apart the laptop screen... but on the Dv5t, there are no visible screws. How should I open this screen?

    Thanks, Pete

    Hi all,
I have just installed the new OS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit RTM and I can confirm that is better then the "old" Windows Vista SP2. Better in speed, resume from hibernate status, less time needed for shutdown , etc...

After you install the new Windows 7 you have to use the windows update to install the missing drivers (audio IDT, Nvidia Graphics, etc...).
However a few drivers are not recognized even after windows update:

JMicron Card Reader drivers need to be downloaded from JMicron site ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/jmb38x/X...00.33_WHQL.zip

For the integrated digital TV Tuner you can use the version "1.0.0.46 A" Vista driver from HP site ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...roduct=3770474) that seems to work.

Then you miss an Unknown device "on Intel(R) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2919" that one is the ENE CIR (Infrared Reciever). I tried to install the Vista driver "2.7.2.0", everything seems ok but after installing it I receive this hw conflict:

    Conflicting device list
    Input/Output Range 0380 - 0383 used by:
    Motherboard resources

Under Device Status windows says that "This device is working properly" but if you go under Resources you see the hw conflict. I tried with the old driver "2.6.0.0 B" but I still get the error. I tried to install the latest Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility (9.1.1.1019) that officially support Windows 7 32-bit/64-bit but nothing change.

Is there anyone else using Windows 7 that receive the same error? For the sake of clarity the remote control is not working.

what is this spot for, its labeled MDC HT-05 I know its not for a tv tuner, since theres a mini-pcie slot on the bottom for that,
this is on the inside of the motherboard, just to the right of the express card slot

    what can go here?

also, if anyones interested, I'll post a few tutorials on how to dim the insanely bright lights (soldering method, and the other method)

I'm interested! My method has been several strips of silver/gray colored duct tape over the bright lights on the front of my dv5t --- and even through 2 or 3 layers of tape, you can still see the lights! Amazing!

as my blasted luck would have it, I have a fan problem (or so i believe) with my dv5t-1000 just as the warranty ran out. there was some whirring noise from the gfx fan about 2 weeks ago, and then yesterday i noticed that the fan had gone silent altogether. the laptop would overheat and shutdown automatically.

because i recently installed win7, im not sure if this is a hardware or software problem.
    some customizations i did:
replaced the default 2gb memory with 4gb gskill pc6400 a few weeks ago.
also installed win7 x64 rtm around the same time. also along with it the newest nvidia driver from laptopvideo2go

in any case, i want to open up the case to take a look around. is there a guide for opening up this laptop?

Hey guys, I'm new around this forum. I've been exhaustively going through the old threads and the Dv5t (and z to a lesser extent) get alot of praise overall.

My 4+ year old zv6000 (Athlon 3200+ 2.0) has been great but has developed the dreaded hinge crack on the left side so I'm looking again.

I know the Dv5 series was discontined awhile back but there are a bunch of preconfigured new and used units on ebay and don't honestly care for the current G60,etc models. They just don't feel as solid and well built as my 6130.

Are you guys still happy w/your laptops and have they been pretty reliable? I'm not sure if I should go w/the C2D or AMD version but I imagine either would be world's better than what I have now.

I've had mine for over a year now. Still running great and looking new. Just one thing that bugs is the small specks of dust inside the infinity display. But once the screen is lit up all the way, I don't notice it anymore.

I love the keyboard, no wear or glossiness. Looks as though it came straight from the factory still. The finish on the laptop still looks brand new, has held up really nice. It's really heavy due to the thick plastics they used, which has stayed solid throughout the year.

I'm a college student and I carried this thing around with me with an HP 15.4" laptop bag specifically made for the dv5t. Has been running smooth. Ran Vista Ultimate x64 without any issues, no BSOD, crashes, nothing.

When typing papers and surfing on internet, I just left it on "Power Saver" mode, everything else I do is on Balance mode. I'm just happy I got the WSXGA+ screen as it helped with typing papers and surfing the internet at the same time.

You don't wanna wait til the HP dm3 comes out? Might be a solid notebook, looking to get it after I see hands on reviews. Thinking about selling this notebook later on...specs are below.

DM3, I guess I must have missed that one somehow.....I've actually been considering the Dv6t/7t as well but haven't been crazy about the preconfigured setups.

How long before the DM3 is out? Depending on price and timeframe, I may be interested in a used laptop....

Mine is in near mint shape minus the creaky hinge but to me it's not worth the time to tear it down and replace the hinges when so much better is out now.

    Thanks

I've had my dv5t for close to 9 months now and am very happy with it. LOVE IT!! I searched extensively for just the right laptop for my needs and preferences, and I think I found it --- even considering the newer ones out there. The only 2 complaints I have are that it does get warm on the underside with long time use, (and I'm not a gamer) -- and I would've preferred a better set of speakers --- but other than that, I think the system is great!

My DV5T is still kicking.. and it's about to have it's 1 year old birthday in a couple of days.. i have been taking extREMely good care of it. no drops, bumps, or bruises. The screen is still in perfect condition.. <KNOCK ON WOOD>.. I would say go for it if you can find one. the ones with the faster video card get a bit hotter than the other. don't get a glossy screen, you won't be able to see it outside at all from what i've heard. you can always upgrade the ram and harddrive later. i think they are great laptops. mine is a 15 incher with the bronze finish. i think it hides the fingerprints a bit better than the black model.. i had that one first,, and had to send it back.. woudn't boot for some odd reason. good laptop to ya!

Oh yeah.. almost forgot... if you can, ,get one with a 12 cell battery.. it has a two-fold purpose... 1.. longer battery life. <duh> and 2. it raises it up off the desk, and acts as a built in cooler if you will. and.. ok.. 3. it seems a little more comfortable to type on being at a slight angle. but if you are a hunt and pecker, i guess it wouldn't make much difference.

I definitely agree about the advantages of the 12 cell battery. It makes a huge difference! However, regarding not getting a glossy screen --- I didn't think the dv5t offered a matte screen. Maybe Tenspeed was referring to the Infinity Display, which, I think, has way too much gloss and reflection. Best thing to do is to go to one of the stores that carries similar models (even though they don't carry the dv5t itself anymore), and check out the different screens (and other features) for yourself. Prior to purchasing my dv5t, I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, until I went to take a look at the laptops on display --- and I'm so grateful that I did because some of the features that seem great 'on paper' are not so great when you see them in person --- and vice versa.

Ah.. yes.. you are correct.. the infinity is what i was referring to. Thanks!! :)

You are also correct in looking before purchasing. i did the same thing. although i wish i had ordered the blue ray instead of the tv tuner.. i think i used it once since i've had it. btw.. .does anyone know where to get the fingerprint reader software for a 32bit version of Vista? i reinstalled my os to 32bit, and now the software i have is 64 bit and not working..... obviously.

I've had my dv5t for about a year now - exactly 17 days more than a year in fact. Just today I noticed that my battery charge was at 0% and that it was "plugged in, not charging". After calling HP they said that since I had called 17 days to late and my 3 year extended warranty doesn't cover batteries (who knew?) that I would have to buy a new one. Has anybody else had this problem? How did you handle it? Where is the best place to buy a battery in case I do end up having to go that route?

I'm sure I don't have enough posts to make a WTB thread here yet but if anyone on this forum is thinking of selling a decently setup (well maintained) dv5, I might be interested.

I'm not in a hurry and will keep browsing the ebay choices from time to time in case there's a preconfig setup that's decent.

From what I've heard the stock Intel 4500 series integrated graphics is pretty much no good but if you're not a hard core gamer, is it alright? Only games I even own at this point are the Half Life/Half Life2 combo pack. Haven't even played it yet...

I think I'd buy one on eBay -- the prices really are outstanding. But a word of caution (offered by another poster above) -- try to order from a supplier located in the U.S., because if you end up having a problem, it's apparently very difficult to mail the product back to a number of areas in the world (i.e. Asia) -- and can be very expensive to mail as well.

HP took out the official ones from their website as far as I know. I notice we have the same screen, what kind of issues is it giving you? I've had mine for a year and i've had no problems at all.

ok well if I open my lid more than 85degrees all the colors get messed up and blotchy, like my whites are light blues and it just a simple problem of the wire(ribbon) having pressure on it where the hindge is when opening the laptop. If it was easy to get into the hindge all I have to do is move the ribbon over. But i cant even find a guide anywhere on how to open this thing. There arent any screws on my monitor area.

sendmarksmail: Not sure why PMs are disabled...checked usercp and didn't see anything pertaining to that area.
Pehaps I don't have enough posts yet?

Tried that, no go. In fact, in the User CP, the only options I have listed under 'Messaging and Notification' are: 'Receive email from administrators' (and from 'Other Members') both of which are checked.

I'm still guessing it's a minimum post count thing but who knows? Either way, I'm getting there I guess :p

Ok I did a quick search and it does appear that 15 posts are required to be able to PM....

Might need to give me a day or two. I'm too tired to have a blitzkrieg posting session tonight :D

I must admit, I am intrigued by the Dv7's subwoofer feature. I know it's not much compared to a real computer setup but it's still cool to me. I'm running a hybrid setup consisting of Klipsch Pro Media mids/tweets w/the control pods removed. The sub is a Tangband 8" in a .7cf sealed enclosure I built powered by a 240w Dayton plate amp that attached/inset to the back of the enclosure. Certainly no slouch especially compared to a 1.5" inch 'sub'...
