i saw some batteries on ebay. some of the 12 cell are rated as 8800 mAh and others are rated as 9600 mAh. the stock on the HP site is 8800 mAh. is it safe to buy the 9600 mAh? i'm planning to buy one. are the products on ebay reliable? please help. i need advice. thanks

Goliath, check my response to your "Re: Battery advice please" thread -- posted in the HP section today May 21st at 8:31AM. I can't respond to your question regarding 8800 mAh vs 9600 mAh, but I did have a strange (and not too successful) experience buying a battery for my dv5t off of eBay, that you probably want to hear about.

@Imperfect1
got it. thanks for the tip. -
Hi
Does someone here had try running metro 2033 on the dv5t?

Metro Should Run IF you overclock. Also most likely at low graphics. I would actually like to know tho. I havent really played a game that was totally unplayable yet though. everything meets at atleast 24FPS when at low settings. it also depends on your screen resolution.
-
Well my resolution is 1280 x 800 and I usualy OC the GPU to 625/530/1475. It use to give me something aroud 5300 3dmark06. ( always on the notebook cooler)
At the native resolution I play cod waw, fallout 3, left 4 dead and batlefield 2142
What I don't whant is to play the game at 1024x768(well maybe its ok) or worse :800x600.
Metro 2033 is very apelling to me so I might take a chance and bye it
on steam.
If someone have ever try it on the dv5t I would really like to know how it run...
Thanks

CharlesP -It's appealing to me to so if you do decide to get it i'd love to here about it man. Although I have the 1680x1050. I'd risk it and try but i've already wasted enough money buying the collectors edition of StarCraft 2. I don't buy "Collectors Edition" Games usually but SC has been my favorite game for well as long as I can remember. Worth it i'd say but expensive.. So yeah my budgets gone haha. Also Fallout 3 is a great game nice choice.
If anyone want's to know SC2 runs great at all high settings on the 1680X1060 screen on the dv5t (my config obviously with overclock at 595/1590/495) SC doesnt handle clocks higher than that very well but yeah the shaders and lighting option can go to "ultra" which runs decently depending on the things mood. Sometimes it just seems like it isn't performing you know? Slower Frames for no reason not just in sc but all games.. maybe cause of the current driver.. Its in for repairs right now actually for multiple issues (my dog jumped on it) But yeah point being Starcraft 2 Runs Great at high settings at 1680X1050 Screen res for anyone who cares figured i'd mention it.
Infact while i'm at it anyone who has steam can add me cammeronjohnson on steam. I actually considered making a dv5t group just so we could all see what games run on the dv5 and game with people with comparable system specs and therefor comparable games. -
He Cammeron Johnson,
I bought Metro 2033 yersterday and..... ouch
1280 x 800 = between 12 and 28 fps. So it is only playable at 800 x 600 with low setting. And my gpu is overclock at it maximum.
I can't say that i wasted my money tought, because I have a lot of fun playing it even at this lower resolution.
I wish i could bye myself a gaming desktop...
Anyways.... I hope this help you a little bit.

Hey Charles - What CPU and RAM do you have? Also have you tried overclocking the shader higher to around 1550 or 1600? I know you've said the gpu is at max but have to ask. the difference on mine is incredible from just 1400 to 1600. (in most games)
Thanks for the heads up though. I feel the same way.. Once i've finished with my associates and have the job I want i'm gonna build my own.. one day! haha -
My CPU is the p7350 and i got 4 gig ram. I have overclocked the shader to 1475 and ill try to get it higher. The pro is at 650 and the mem is at 530.
This situation is really sad because the game is so fun.

If you liked Fallout you might like Borderlands. Once i have the money I will prob get metro its one of those things I keep thinking "nah" but i've looked at it so many times i'll probably end up doing it. i'm surprised your shaders are wanting to stick around 1475 when your core is at 650.. I'm slightly worried that when my laptop comes back the gpu will be replaced with one that wont oc so high.
Edit: just bought splinter cell collection instead $45 on steam for the weekend includes Deluxe edition of conviction and splinter cell games. -
This fixed my screen flicker issue. In my case I have a 9600m GT and the connector was also slightly loose. Zero flicker now...
It is odd that this was causing issues in Windows and not in the BIOS screen. I say that because support was having me install graphics, bios and chipset drivers in that order and they said if the bios screen flickered at the end of that process, then they would have to fix it. The bios screen would not flicker though so I'm sure they would have given me crap about it being a software issue.
Is there any way to pull the 9600m out and run this off the IGP (if there is one on this model)? My wife really doesn't need that card in there, wants a cooler, quieter, longer running machine. Live and learn. -
Careful with Ubisoft games. An Internet connection is required at all times to play any new Ubisoft game, including Conviction.

LeftFootRed- Why not just underclock the GPU and Undervolt the CPU? Its easy quick and lowers temperatures way down causing the fan to run at lower speeds. On top of that the hardware will last longer and the battery life will be increased. It would basically (in this case) have the same effect as removing the chip without the hassle. (if removing it is even possible which i doubt). Underclocking the GPU will lower the graphics performance which you said your wife doesn't need. Undervolting the CPU will not cause a performance loss at all just lower temperatures from the core. Win Win.
Asriel - I knew this but thank you just the same Asriel
The net connection to prevent pirating is only a pain to legal customers which sucks. anyone who knows how to get their games illegaly isn't caused strife by this issue since someone always figures out a work around anyways. I can't blame them for wanting to stop piracy but punishing paying customers is not the way. But then again we all already knew that.

Well I got my laptop back after a week and a half from HP at first glance it looked great they had replaced all broken parts. Once I turned it on however I found they had replaced the 1680X1050 screen with a 1280X800. I contacted them about this and they insisted its impossible. Three driver installations One Bios Update and one OS Reinstallation later they still wont believe me and continue to say its a "driver issue" an HP Case Manager should contact me soon. Hopefully they fix this mess its a bit of an annoyance..
-
WOW, Cammeron, that's awful! Can you provide HP with photos so they can see for themselves what the new screen looks like? (How about posting those pics here too, so we can see too?)
Keep after HP, because after 3 or more unsuccessful attempts to repair the problem, they're supposed to replace the laptop. Do you have an extended warranty? Have you read the part that pertains to this kind of repair, and have you gone onto their website to read their exact repair/replacement policy? You'll need all this information in your arsenal as you continue your fight with HP. Good luck, and hope they solve the problem - or give you a new laptop. -

Imperfect1 - I am confident that HP will resolve this issue. This laptop was actually a replacement for the "3 try" policy on an old dv6500z. While in for repairs on the speakers an HP tech managed to put a large scratch across the top of the screen (I am assuming thats how it happened while it was out of my possession) after they agreed to fix it and it wasn't after being sent in 2 times they replaced the laptop with this DV5T. So as I said I am sure they will resolve it. I have a Case Manager hopefully calling me tomorrow I will contact HP again if I am not called. I have my order number with the original customer packing list that states the screen was a WSXGA Bright View infinity 1680X1050 screen. I am sure that once I explain the situation to the Case Manager thing's will begin to progress smoothly.
I will of course post here on the results and I will try to post tomorrow with pictures if i have the time.
While I am very frustrated with the situation I am still a big HP fan even more so with the DV5T. As long as all things are handled in a decent time and manner I can understand mistakes happen even in big business. The fact that I know HP makes an effort to fix their mistakes goes a long way. -

I waited the 48 Hours and never received a call from HP. I contacted them via chat and was told it was due to it being a weekend (I wasn't thinking) I contacted them again on Tuesday and told them I still had not been contacted. They "re-escalated" the case and asked me to please wait another 48 Hours. I agreed to that and finally received a call from a very polite case manager Cayla (Kayla?) i'm unsure of the spelling but she took the time to understand the issue and to double check the resolution I had given to make sure she had the appropriate screen size correct. She even agreed on quicker shipping when I asked for it. I should be receiving confirmation of the start of the repair request process soon and hopefully all goes well. Cayla seems more than capable to take of this situation.
-
I actually kind of remember when you posted about your laptop issues last year.
Yeah, HP service folks are not great on returning phone calls --- but if you keep on top of them and keep escalating upwards, you can usually get a fair resolution. (No pun intended.) Good luck, Cammeron, and let us know what they finally do for you. -

Imperfect1 - I am going to be pushing for repairs. My overnight fedex "Coffin" is due on the 14th since it is a weekend. They should then recieve the laptop on the 15th and i'd expect it back at latest by the 18th (but that's just me). I will keep the situation updated.
*Metro 2033 Playability*
For anyone who cares - I downloaded and played Metro2033 *it's $25 on steam right now* It plays fine at low settings at 1280X800 with no overclock on drivers 257.15 (which aren't good drivers at all in my opinion) I have had some spots with a sudden drop in frame rate (areas with large packed in crowds and sometimes the dust, fog, smoke (whatever it is) rolling in from opened doors can cause a drop. It is still playable though and i'd imagine that with an over clocked laptop and better drivers the game will be very playable at lower settings even on a 1680X1050 (which I will update on once i receive my laptop back with the proper screen resolution -
Guys I have similar issues , I have 9600m GT & my screen flickers once a week or something or maybe twice a day, I am sure it is not a software issue as it flickers in bios , flickering dissappear when i just change the angle of the screen & flickering is not that bad also , So doing that procedure <opening the speakers > will help me or not ?
Iam out of warranty -
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
mohameddegheidy - If changing the angle fixes the issue than it is definitely hardware related. If you feel confident go ahead and open her up the screen is connected on the left side under the sound board and keyboard. Be Careful!
-
yup I knew it is hardware issue , I will try to see videos or tutorials on how to do that and Ill give it a try , thanxx a lot

HP use to have a video on their site on how to take it apart but it has since been removed. Here is a guide to taking apart the DV5T I wrote
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...al-hp-dv5t-owners-lounge-566.html#post5727760 Post 5654 After PLL Info
I can't say it's the clearest but who knows maybe it will help a little? Good luck
Anyone?:
While not many people use the DV5 forum anymore I am posting my HP Repair Experience just so anyone who wonders knows I guess?
*Note* My Fedex package w/laptop enclosed left for hp today. It was a pain they didn't drop it because our usual FedEx girl wasn't here and the new guy didn't know the community gate code. I drove down a half hour to pick it up and they told me he was attempting redelivery (even though I called to pick up) Oh well though I got it sorted out
and of course that's how shipping companies are no fault of HP. My service code/status is oddly missing from HP's page though. Estimated delivery of 10:30AM on the 15th. I'd say there's no reason to not have it back by friday... Fingers crossed though
Edit: Service page returned after being gone for 2 days. All is well (figured it would be)
Edit 2: 6/15 9:48 AM ES Laptop recieved at HP. HP Site says due back on the 22nd
6/15 11:17 PM PS Laptop Return Tracking Number Posted Schedule ship 6/16 est back 6/22 (labeled next day ship)
Edit 3: Success! 6/17 my laptop was delivered at around noon. I came home turned it on and the proper screen was installed! -
Perhaps these 2 links will help: Here's a link to the dv5t Service Guide which, I believe, has instructions for taking the laptop apart: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01550108.pdf, and here's a link to the dv6t Service Manual download page: HP DV5-1000 Manuals, Support and Troubleshooting - Pavilion Laptops.
PS Glad your laptop came back with the right screen, Cammeron. -
Thank You a lot guys , I already had that pdf , I removed the 3 screws under the battery and the 2 at the edges & I still couldnt get out that cover , Is it that tight ? I mean should I remove it with something hard or what ? , however in the pdf , they said remove another 2 screws & one of them is under the hdd but I can figure why , maybe that is for the keybooard , I have only the flicker problem btw , Why is it that common ?!
-
PM'd you just now but the 5 screws were all I had to remove. It was difficult popping it loose at first. I remember there being little tabs/latches around the edge of the grill holding it down that you have to pop free by prodding it with some trial and error.
-
Okay thank u , Im tryin this & hopefully it works ISA !!
-
THANX A MILLION GUYS
that actually fixed my flicker issue , i didnt actually get it all out , I was kinda afraid to break something so I just fixed it & it worked like charm , i also had to remove a sticker that had a title called replace with hp spare bla bla bla , i removed a lot of dust too !! THNXX A MILLION !! -

Tryed Metro2033 today this time with the 1680X1050 Screen rez. it runs fine in less graphic intensive areas (not a lot of people and no smoke) but fps drop hard durring anything else (dust, crowds, fight scenes) Very playable at 1280X800 when overclocked though
-
i think that there are alot of dv5 that has or will have this screen corruption problem based upon the bad connector design... my laptop has been flawless otherwise...
-
just bought a new 12 cell battery for my dv5 from ebay. how long should i charge it initially? also, is there a way to display the time left in the battery instead of percentage? thanks.

I'm wondering if any of you tried a CPU upgrade. I'm look at the Q9100 Quad Core Processor.
Some guy on ebay is selling it at a great price. But I don't know if he's reliable or not since the rest of the sellers want $300 for the quad core while he wants $220.

may i ask the average GPU temperature? i get an average of 60 to 70 Celsius under normal use like browsing the internet. when watching a movie, i get around 70 to 80 celsuis. is this normal or high? thanks.
-
I have had my dv5t for over 16 months and I get around the mid 40's under normal use and the mid to high 60's when gaming. (This is with a notebook cooler).
I would say that yours is normal if comparing other user's temps. It has been advised to lift the back of the unit up an inch or two to improve air flow for the one system fan. I would also recommend cleaning any dust out of the fan and heatsink. I do this by installing a tooth pick into the bottom of the unit's fan grill. This will prevent the fan blades from spinning to fast and using compressed air to blow out any dust through the side heatsink grills. -
@Rozwell
thanks for the reply. i'll try your suggestion. i also have a laptop cooler and living in a tropical country. average temperature here is around 33 Celsius. -
I don't think that will work. It wouldn't be supported in BIOS. Which means it might not post(boot). The fastest CPU sold with the dv5(special edition) was a T9800.

Has anybody upgraded to window 7 using a CD not bought from HP? Would it remove the recovery partition?
-
Cammeron Johnson Notebook Consultant
I have upgraded to windows 7 using discs from microsoft direct. The Recovery Partition will still be their but you will have to update it using a driver from hp site in order to use it. if for some reason it didnt work you could always just pay the 10 bucks and get new recovery discs from hp if needed which would reinstall vista and reinstall the recovery partition
-
yeah it seems right.... i keep the GPU in adaptive mode (see newer dets) and combing a cooler and a winter temp (i live in australia...queensland....daytime temps of 22-25 C ...winter in the southern hemisphere) i get 52-56 degrees...gaming and cooler... protracted....ME2 levels..... 78-80...but remarkably the systems cools pretty well....after the stress

Ello ello all!
I am looking to purchase a new battery for my current laptop. My original has been dead for quite some time now. The battery refuses to charge. I have tried many different fixes and none of worked. I have also used the battery on another dv5t and I had no luck.
I want to purchase a new one, which do I buy and where can I find it for the most affordable price?
I also want to completely wipe my drive from Vista and upgrade to 7. Which is best for me to purchase? -
@cammeron johnson
nice to hear from you again. thanks for the reply. did you make a recovery partition? i want to create a recovery partition after installing windows 7 and all the necessary drivers that will restore my notebook to the windows 7 OS not the stock OS that it came with which is vista. please i need advice on how to make this recovery partition that when you press F11 it will go to the recovery mode just like how HP did it. thanks again.
@paradign018
thanks for the info
@rusch
i just bought a 12cell battery from ebay for $60. had it for a month now and so far so good. it gives me an average of about 3 1/2 hours in normal use. -
Is there a way to get the laptop to output to an external monitor during boot / BIOS? I have an external LCD hooked up via VGA, and it seems the monitor only gets a signal once the laptop is booted into windows.
My underlying issue is that I've been having that screen corruption / flickering issue for a while. Every couple of months, I would open up the laptop, wiggle and reseat the display connector and the problem would go away for a little while. This last time, when I put the laptop back together, The laptop LCD showed garbage and neon lines, etc. This is during bootup, so I know it has nothing to do with video drivers. The backlight seems good too, and obviously the video card is working, so my guess is the inverter is bad?
Anyway, until I get around to finding a replacement inverter, I would be fine using an external monitor, except that I can't see anything on the monitor until the windows login screen. So, no BIOS, no windows boot menu, etc. I'm hoping to find an option in the BIOS to always force output to an external display, but I'm stuck because I can't see the BIOS menu.
Sorry for the long story, I just wanted to fully explain what I was trying to accomplish.
I swear.. this was the first and last HP laptop I'll ever buy.. -
After some more research, I realize the problem with the LCD is still a display cable problem. Can't be an inverter problem since the backlight is still functioning.
Anyway, I took a closer look at the display cable and found that one of the wires to a pin on the connector is disconnected. So that would definitely be a problem...
I can't seem to find the part number for just the display cable though - There is a barcode on the back of the cable that says ZYEDDCE003CMD421 but this doesn't come up in any search. Any help? -

Goliath6900 - Thanks man it is good to be on the forum. I have had no success with any third party apps for a total backup that is one step. ive had minor success with norton ghost but nothing great and it ended up causing errors with an external hard drive in the end and had to be removed (Norton would create a backup to the external and if the external was connected at boot it would crash windows and sometimes randomly even after booted) If you find one please tell me

@cammeron johnson
thanks for the reply. i was thinking of using norton ghost too once i upgraded to windows 7 but not anymore. i'll try to research other third party software. if i'm successful, i'll let you know as soon as possible. Wow!! hope you get your droid X right away. -

Goliath6900 - Yeah I was really hoping it would be good but it would hog space when configured not to and crash windows soo i dumped it. A nice piece of software u might try that saved my butt on one occasion was comodo time machine Data Recovery with Comodo Time Machine | Comodo it is easy to use and installs quickly with its own boot option. I uninstalled it because of an old conflict i believe i caused but never got around to fixing. On another note im glad I didnt get my droid x yet
my truck was broken in yesterday (they jimmied the lock and i got them on tape they broke into both mine and my fathers) all they stole was the radio though who knows maybe if i had had the droid i would have left it in the truck?
-
@cammeron johnson
sorry to hear that. i hope they get caught. good thing you did not have the droid yet. i'll try the Comodo once I upgrade to windows 7 and let you know the results. thanks for the tip. -
He everybody
Did you guys have tried the new nvidia driver 258,96 ? How do they perform whit the 9600gt ?
Thanks
