Hey guys, thanks for all the help, i got another question. I tried posting on the HP out of the box forum but no one has answered in a few days. I just got an HP dm1 and wanted to make a recovery file. It doesnt have an optical drive, nor do i have an exernal one and i was wondering if there was a way i could make the recovery on an external hard drive, or make the recovery a smaller file. The recovery program says it needs 17gb of free space and it says i could put it onto a flash drive but the largest flash drive i have is a 16gb one. Any help regarding this wold be great, thanks!

Yep.. an external drive would work, as well as a a bigger thumb drive. basically, you just need something that is big enough to hold the 17gb's of data. I don't know if you could use 4 or 5 blank dvd's as I am not familiar with the program you are using to backup your data. It has to have that capability built into it to span across several discs of media.

Really any drive should work but be careful using large hard drives as placing other files in the same folder by accident could cause problems. I would recommend (while expensive) getting a flash drive if its that important to you. Still like tenspeed said any of those options should work.

Is there a list of all the processors that work on these boards? I am thinking my P7350 is starting to show it's age and I would love to crack this open and update the processor myself.

Also, are their any solutions to make them run cooler? How about some form of copper shunt between the heat-sink and processors (GPU/CPU)?

    Service Manual is here. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01550108.pdf

Not all the CPU's compatible are listed there but others may be a hit or a miss. To run cooler I've never used a shunt but I've found simply opening up the laptop and dusting it out (use qtips and alcohol to get dust off the fan as well) then cleaning the heat sink and reapplying paste keeps the laptop relatively cool. I have the P8600 with the 9600M GT and the air usually feels cool coming out during normal use.

If you decide you want a T9900 i've got one i'll sell for $200 on paypall (when it arrives I ordered it new then decided i'd rather just buy a new laptop.. Guy on ebay wont allow returns though). I don't know if it is compatible for sure but I know it's compatible with the chipset just dont know about the BIOS. I would assume it is since pretty much all the other T series chips are. It would be unopened. =p

Thanks, but I think I am going to look into a T9600. It would be a sharp increase over my P7350. Seeing as I use this as a mobile desktop replacement, I don't know that the power saving aspects of the P series will be that big a deal.

Sup guys, do any of you know the location of the GPU inside the dv5? I'm building a custom cooler and want to figure out what the best fan placement would be in order to lower the GPU's temps as much as I can.

Look up the motherboard on ebay for the DV5t-1000 you will see the orange (Copper) heat sink it splits into two paths. the one to the right is the cpu and the one to the left is the GPU I believe. I've taken it apart a few times for cleaning it's fairly easy.

Thanks man, unfortunately, every picture of the motherboard I found didn't have the fan and heat sink assembly on it. I still think that I figured out which one is the GPU though.

And you're the first person I've ever heard who said that taking apart this laptop is easy, lol everyone says it's a pain in the a**. I wish the hp tutorial videos were still up, they were very thorough with the instructions on how to do it.

No problem, well I have taken it apart multiple times so i've gotten used to it now. the hardest part is remembering where all the screws go which is why i keep a lot of plastic cups and sharpies near by when doing it. I'd say the first time its more frustrating than difficult. :) Good luck with everything though!

So why have you taken your laptop apart so many times? Just routine cleaning or have you had to replace parts?

Since buying my Acer 3830TG I've relegated my DV5T for work usage and am leaving it at the office. I took it in today to have it totally reserviced, new charger, new battery, re-thermal paste with AS5, cleaned, etc. For the last 3 years I'd been annoyed by caching/loading and I was thinking of putting another 2gb in (was 2gb before). They opened it up at the repair shop and noticed lo and behold that there was already a 2nd 2gb DIMM in the memory slot- but it was unseated and freely floating around the inside of my laptop all these years! Funny. I still like the DV5T though, it served me well as I abused it with games all this time.

It's ICH9M PM45. You can use CPUz (mainboard tab) or HWinfo to see that information.

CPUz: CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
HWinfo: HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools

As for caddy, you can't install a second HDD using a normal caddy. What you have to do is use an SATA optical drive caddy that holds a HDD. I've done it to mine. Posted pics of it but not sure where they are. Might be in the thread dedicated to this sort of project: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...-ssd-hdd-storage-using-optical-bay-caddy.html

    For example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/9-5mm-Seria...C_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item43a8596349

    Hi everyone!

Maybe some of you guys could answer my question. I have a Hp Pavilion Dv5 1180eh, and I want to upgrade it a bit. I think that a Core 2 Quad Q9100 CPU should do the trick. Only question is: is it possible?
It has a PM45 intel chipset, and far as I know it supports Q9100.

    I have a T5800 2,0 Ghz 800mhz Fsb CPU in it now.

Thanks in advance for any answer.

No. You can't use a quad core. But you can go as high as a T9800 or T9900. I'm running a T9800 @ 3.0ghz using dual IDA and Throttlestop. Excellent temps. Highh 30's DegC to low 40's DegC.

Wow its been three years and my dv5tse is running like a champ!

original hard drive seems to have gotten lucky and had no issues. been cleaning dust regularly so it is staying cool.

I did have some oddities with the built in webcam not being recognized until i check its cable. Came back though...

Anyway, I just havent had anything to use as an excuse to upgrade.

Hey guys i need some help with my hp dv5t. I recently replaced an old palmrest with a new one. Upon putting the laptop back together i get massive screen flickering to the point it eventually shuts off. I took it apart again and checked if the display panel cable wasn't socketed in firmly and it was. So i was thinking maybe a cable got loose in the lcd however i can't seem to find a guide how to remove the lcd enclosure. The manual here http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01550108.pdf?aoid=35252 only shows 2 screws on the display enclosure where mine has 4 so i'm a bit remiss on what to do....any advice? i have an hp dv5t-1000

PS: its quite old but has been working like a champ, this isn't the first time i took it apart either.

A friend handed me a broken DV5-1150eo, I look at it and determined that the CPU had fried in the heat it is producing (also by the flashing caps/num lock pattern/codes). So I got a new RM-72 on ebay for £15.

Now my question is, can this DV5 run a Turion II M500, they share the same socket, stats etc. Or does its microcode need to be put into a modified bios?

Has anyone seen or read anyone that has succeeded in putting a newer CPU on this machine?

PS. Hm, is this thread only for DV5 with Intel CPUs maybe?

No it's not compatible with the Turion II series. I was thinking of trying that out on a different HP notebook that used the Turion series but it wouldn't work due to the difference in chipset.

Strange that yours has 4. Where are the other two located? In any event, removing all 4 screws on yours should be the correct thing to do. Everything else afterwards should be straight forward.

Thank you so much for this information. This has to be one of the most useful posts I've found regarding the dv5.

I got my dv5t-1000 (T9400 2.53GHz, Ge Force 9600M 512Mb) back in December of '08. This laptop is unfortunately power hungry, as I've never gotten any better than 2 hours of use from a full charge. And the damned touch pad buttons are so fragile, as I've had to replace the palm bezel TWICE already due to a broken left touch pad button. But it's well designed hardware wise, as I've come to discover in this process. And I mostly rely on an external mouse now, to help alleviate button wear.

I've been giving the idea of an SSD upgrade some serious consideration, but waiting for the latest round of discounts (fall/winter usually brings some great ones). I've been planning to go with 256Gb, as I just don't want to reduce free HD space, but now with this idea of utilizing the optical bay for a 2nd hard drive I'm thinking of 128Gb instead (far more economical). I had upgraded the DVD player to Blu-ray, and balked at the idea of losing that advantage, but I now realize it'll be hot swap-able. The only caveat is having to remove the screw each time, which may wear out the threads if done frequently enough. I wonder if there's a quick release mechanism possible.

Anyway... I'm kind of late to the party on this forum. I wish I'd known about it sooner and saved myself a lot of time with the palm bezel replacement. :)

Thank you so much, Couldnt be more helpful.

Are you %100 sure that AHCI is Enabled defaultly? (sorry for asking this, i just need to be sure)

If its enabled, do i need to install the modded bios to use SSD properly? Any benefits for me?

    For example
"-SLIC2.1" and "-IDE Controller option (important to some SSD firmware updating.)" are good thing to use my Sandisk Extreme SSD?

Sorry for my bad language and Thank you so much for your help.

Yes, it will be fine set to AHCI (which is default). I needed this BIOS so that I could enter IDE mode to update the firmware on a OCZ Vertex SSD as it can only be performed in DOS mode environment. But you can run your SSD in either IDE or AHCI. But I think TRIM only works with the native AHCI mode. Also install Intel's Rapid Storage Technology driver (you can get it from Intel's website). When you're done, you should have the following device listed in Device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers:

    Intel ICH9M - E/M SATA AHCI Controller.

Also, with the modified firmware, you can run DUAL IDA to gain an extra multiplier on the CPU. It's a small overclock. You would have to use ThrottleStop to activate it. On my DV5, I'm running a T9800 CPU @ 3.06Ghz, 1.05v using the Dual IDA trick. Been running it for a year or so, no issues.

    1) I installed intel rst today and it writes "Intel ICH9M/M-E Family 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 2929" in device manager.

    2) To use this small overclock, is it all about just Enabling the ThrottleStop?

    3) Okay lets install the modded bios. I hope there wont be any problem while installing

I extract the zip file and after that do i need to click on InsydeFlash? Is that all?

    1. That's Ok also.
    2. Yes, you have to use ThrottleStop. You Have to set the mutliplier and your VID. Check out the throttlestop thread for instructions. http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...arket-upgrades/531329-throttlestop-guide.html

    3. Yes, that's the file. I would right click it and run as administrator. Also make sure you have no other programs running. i.e. make sure your taskbar is clear.

Thank you for all your answers.
    You really helped me.
My bios is modded now :)

There are no throttlestop word in bios but i guess thats okay, it allows us to install the software and change the values right? Maybe ill do it later.

Now its time to put ssd in it. I hope its gonna be good.

    Thanks again, a lot.

    You're welcome.

ThrottleStop is a program. It's free. See that thread for details of how it works and where to download it from.

I presently have a T9400 (2.53GHz), so I'm expecting that if I upgrade my processor I'd have to go with at least a 0.5xGHz improvement to see any noticeable difference.

I had noticed some sellers offering the Intel E8435 as a "like T9900" CPU. Would it be compatible with the dv5t chipset?

How was this modified BIOS created? Was much needed to be changed to accommodate what's stated in the enhancements list? Assuming it turns out to have an unexpected compatibility issue, I take it that it would still be possible to flash the OEM F.21A again?

No, I would steer clear of those sellers. The ES chip sellers also. You could get a T9800 or T9900 and use Throttlestop to gain an extra multiplier. Just bear in mind that if you routinely do CPU intensive tasks, things will get pretty hot, pretty fast. But should top out @ 75-85 DegC.

An X9100 was also used by a poster a while back. So there's that also.

I don't know the exact particulars of how it was made other than that certain sections were "unhidden" or "unlocked." So basically, every BIOS has the requisite code. It's just that manufacturers hide portions of that code from consumers. So you could say that the BIOS is reverted back to its raw state.

In any event, there wouldn't be any incompatibilities. But yes, you could flash back to an official BIOS like OEM f.21.
