The original restriction to the coupon was to the first 2700 people. I wouldn't be surprised if they reached that limit. Also, your system must be $1299 or more.

What I would do, is set up your system config, go through most of the checkout process online and enter the coupon to make sure it is working. Then call and let them know.

That's the route I went, i check and made sure... but I have a feeling that they might have put down 2700 just to get people to want to buy it faster, have this "deadline is coming up" sort of feeling but the number is actually more... I don't know better, its just a guess, but hey,,, I'm glad mine worked, thats all that matters to me, but I wish others luck!

Reading up on latest gaming news, COD world at war will use the same engine as call of duty 4, my 8600M GT 256mb handled COD 4 at 1440 x 900 with all high setting beautifully, this puppy with 9600M GT 512MB will rip through world at war easily, can't wait!

Yeah, I did that too just to make sure its working and it did. Just remember that you can't be using any other discounts and it should work. I managed to squeeze $100 credit out of the representative which i'm not complaining about cause i've tried for the last 2 hours just to get something so I'll settle with that. Stupid lady said that was the credit cap but I doubt that since some people here have gotten like $200 back but oh well. Thanks again people for the help! I greatly appreciate it!

I don't have it enabled although I have tried it. I like 'real' colors, and I think that digital vibrance makes the display overly saturated.

I am going to calibrate my laptop's display later with my Spyder2 Express monitor calibration device later.
It runs lukewarm at best while idle . . . quite cool actually. Computers are designed to run, so you could leave yours on for as long as you want. I left my old Sager on for almost two years.

The dv5t's fan is almost completely silent at idle. You really can't hear it unless you put your ear next to it, and even then it is quiet.

Hey can anyone please tell me specifically what drivers/software I need to install and what they are called while doing the Clean Vista Install? And are there always only one executable file per folder, or do some require you to launch multiple executables that are located in the same folder?

    Really appreciate the help...

With out digital vibrance I think the colors look way to dull. With 25% digital vibrance the colors arent to saturated and they have just the right amount of color and brightness. When I first got the laptop i noticed the colors seemed off, but once I changed the digital vibrance everything looks good now

    =============================

just as an fyi...i found this discussion interesting, being a photography enthusiast myself!

Steve, i'll get mine next week, but i do not have an Nvidia discrete graphics card (i wanted the coolest running machine because (a) i don't game, and (b) i intend to use this for reading reading reading various news-related sites, i.e. BBC, CNN, Bloomberg, etc, so i wanted something that would be cool on my lap while i'm on a chair/sofa/bed).

when you take a picture, have you tried using the "Custom White Balance" feature? it is on most digital cameras, even point-and-shoots! it is VERY important! whenever you're not using it, you may well discover that the skin tones of people are not "true". read the relevant page (it's VERY simple) in your manual please and you'll see that it's literally pushing one button! it "sets" the correct "white balance point" and, voila, colors will be correct.

if you did that, i'd think that your comparison photographs that people could not tell apart would be more different from each other. if the picture is of the same object, under identical lighting, you do not need to re-do Custom White Balance. However, do be aware that "the same lighting" includes the sun coming from the windows do not all of a sudden become cloudy, or brighter due to clouds having moved out!

Sorry for the digression from our favorite sport: refreshing the FedEx screen showing that my dv5t is sitting there in Shanghai waiting to board a flight! :(

What I mean on the last question is...:

For example in SWSetup/Drivers/chipset there is a setup application, but there also is another setup application in SWSetup/Drivers/chipset/64x . So do I need to run both of these applications?

Alright folks, I got a few questions. Some may seem a bit dumb, but what the hell... I don't want to backtrack nearly 30 pages if these may have been answered.

How do I get to the settings for my laptop such as brightness, lid options, battery etc etc..

What is the best "power plan" to be on?

    HP Recommended.
    Power Saver.
    High Performance.

What exactly does a computer do when it is "sleeping" and "hibernating" ?

Hey I've had my dv5t for almost a week now, and I love it. It has a P8600, 9600m GT, and 4 gigs from Newegg. I just wanted to point out that I noticed people were getting credited for the differences in the $400 off coupon, so I gave it a shot and got $105 back on my first try in under 15 min. I was reluctant to call because my config didn't technically meet the requirements (it was a little under $1300) and I hate talking to customer service. I also used the previous 5% off coupon, and the HP rep told me that only one coupon could be applied to the order. The thing that you have to tell the rep is that you re-configured your laptop with the EXACT same specs and only used the new $400 coupon, and it was still however much cheaper than your original config's grand total including original rebates. After going in circles for a little bit trying to explain this, I said that I don't mind having to return it and re-order to get my money, but it would be a big hassle. She immediately asked how much the difference was. I said it was $105. I didn't know what it was exactly but this was pretty close, and I wanted to make sure I would be getting at least $100 back :p (plus if I asked for something like $200 bucks, my chances of getting it would be a lot lower). She immediately said she would credit me $105 to my credit card if I kept the laptop, and she never actually did anything to verify that the new config would have been cheaper.

So my new grand total is $1162 (including tax, shipping, and an HP WiFi printer that costs $110 retail) after $105 refund + $64 Newegg RAM!

Congrats to everyone who ordered a new dv5t! I think you are going to be very happy with the machine. :) I certainly am.
Great tip about the custom white balance . . . I just put that on in my camera. Next time I take some pictures, I'll check out the difference.

I will let you guys know how the monitor calibration goes. It's too light out to do it now, I need to wait until tonight.
You can control brightness manually by using the [Fn] and [F7] or [F8] keys .

To get to lid options, go Start > Control Panel > click on the green Mobile PC category > Power Options > then in the left pane, you can "Choose what closing the lid does" and so on.

I like the High Performance plan for being plugged in, and the Battery Saver when on battery . . . I don't know what the HP one does though.

Sleeping puts the computer in a low-power state, running enough power to the memory to keep data there. Hibernation writes everything in the memory to the hard disk, which is re-read back into the memory when you turn the computer back on.
Excellent work, and congrats on the machine. I only tried for $100 when I got mine, since that's the rebate they started offering shortly after I ordered. Looking back, I paid a bit too much for my dv5t but oh well.

    Try here:
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showforum=94

download the 177.72 drivers (or 177.73 drivers if you have 64-bit Windows). Then follow our Driver Update Guide to get them installed.

I know I have already asked this but I am just hoping someone will see this tonight... when doing VIsta clean install do you need to run all the applications? All of the setup applications? Or just the application in the root folder (like do I need to just run BTOOTH/Setup or do I also need to go into the BTOOTH/x64/ and run the applications in here too? I am on 64 bit Vista btw.

Hey i recommend calling (800) 474-6836, and going with the first option called 'order'. Tell them that you just bought a Dv5t and saw the 400 dollar coupon, that there is a price difference of X dollars (between what you did pay and what you would have paid) and ask them if they can refund your money or if you can send back your laptop? (I have a bit more indepth detail on pg. 110 of what I did, but there you go) Good luck and i hope it helps

No no, get to the point where you enter the coupon code (you dont actually have to have the money ready at that point. Enter the code and see if it works. FYI there is a bit of a problem if your logged in APP (the student discount) the best way to avoid his is to log out, config, it will ask you for your password before you go to the coupon stage, enter it, and then enter the code (APP will not appear in the price).

Just remember the laptop has to be over 1299 (before tax and any coupons and discounts.) And warranties and accessories do not count toward this price

DualMonitors its not only for pictures it's for the colors that the computer displays in general. When I first got the laptop I noticed everything was so dull and kind of gloomy, so I put up the digiatal vibrance to 20 and every thing came alive! I think that most ppl that try it out will love it.

Chaz: please note that you don't just push the Custom White Balance button. you point the lens of the camera to a piece of white paper/white index card, and then press the custom white balance button. that sort of, in a sense, gives the camera a "zero" frame of mind, sort of it knows where the proper white should be under the specific lighting situation. i was concerned when i read your post that you might have pointed your camera ANYWHERE, and then pressed the custom white balance button, which would certainly not have worked, unless everything around is pure pure white!

I received my dv5t and really like it. Currently making the recovery disks.

The only flaw I have noticed so far is the express card won't spring out. I had to pry it out with a knife to put he media card in its spot. It won't spring either and I had to make a small tab for it with tape to be able to pull it out. Anyone else had this issue?

You don't have to add a CC. I believe you can just click on the CC button and then it will take you to the checkout screen, before you pay.

Should take 3 DVDs, 2 Dual layer DVDs, or something like 11 CDs. DVD+R are better for archival purposes, but DVD-R should work just fine.

Yeah, I pointed it at a white piece of paper. For now I am using auto since the lighting conditions weren't the greatest when I first tried it.

I got the display calibrated, and the colors look much better . . . I didn't realize how washed out they were before. The Spyder 2 Express did a nice job with this display.

Greetings all, can someone please verify if their esate/usb port works either as a usb or an sata port? I just got the new dv5t today and the port does nothing. Also would like to see if this is a 32bit vs 64bit vista issue, so if you could please state which os you have. Thanks all

Well, I talked to the HP rep today and they assured me that there should be no problems with respect to heat or failures....grain of salt I think.

Can you get APP and the 400 off coupon? Also, where do you get the drivers for the 9600 gt mobile?

I have 32-bit Vista and the port works fine . . . try reinstalling your Intel chipset drivers and the eSATA drivers.
Yes - there is no 'best' driver. 'Best' is a very misleading word and should not be used frequently.

/rant (sorry I have a thing against that word ;))

    Try 177.72

So then whats the most "reliable" driver? :D

    177.72 doesnt have 64bit.

How do I go about installing these drivers? What do I use to get rid of existing drivers?
