When I am getting ready to uninstall my current driver, what do I do?
Delete nvidia drivers and display, or leave display? -
Hi Chaz, I have reinstalled the chipset drivers, and the intel matrix storage manager. No go. Reinstalled the entire os, no go. The usb port doesnt work at all. Sometimes I can get it to see the esata drive, but only until i disconnect, then it wont see it a second time. I am using a vantec nextar 3 esata enclosure. I am not aware of any esata drivers. vantec says it should work with vista. Any thoughts? Do I have a bad usb port regardless? -
^ Does USB work on it? It's supposed to be a combo port.
-
Alright, when I am ready to go to sleep, do I put my laptop in sleep or hibernate mode?
Also, can I leave the laptop plugged in to the wall while like this? -
-
how long does it usually take for HP to ship after the build date?
mine is for Aug 20th and then after it arrives my parents have to ship it to me >< since im moving out -
-
Chaz: hate to hound on this... but photography is a hobby of mine so here i go, yet again...
you mentioned that when you "did" custom white balance, the "lighting condition wasn't the greatest...". That is EXACTLY the point. Whatever the lighting condition was, as long as the WHITE you use to point the camera at is a correct white, then the camera "learns" that the lighting condition is INCORRECT to that PARTICULAR degree! As a result, the camera's custom white balance corrects the "less than perfectly correct white balance" due to the "not greatest lighting" and makes the color balance "right"!
Did i ramble? or am i making some sense? -

I did a clean install and the USB part of the eSATA/USB port works fine. I don't have anything eSATA to test it with though.

I have a few questions...
Does the palm rest get uncomfortably warm? I plan on gaming for hours at a time.
What are you using to lift the back up by .5-1 inch to make it cooler?
Is it easy enough to remove the bloatware without doing a "clean install"?
What ram should I buy if I buy it after? I'd want a total of 4gig, but HP's ram I guess is too expensive (150 bucks).
Thanks! -
Are there any settings that you can tell us so that we can set it to make it look better too? Or do I have to have that calibration tool? -
Chaz, When I am getting ready to uninstall my current driver, what do I do?
Delete nvidia drivers including display, or except display? -
Anyone try Linux yet? I just put Ubuntu on my dv5t. I got the video to go. The touch pad for volume and wifi isn't happening yet. Ubuntu boots and the speakers are at full. Again, a knob would've been nice. I can't seem to turn on the wifi yet.
Perhaps a Ubuntu + dv5t thread would be in order. hopefully there are much smarter folks than I out there that can get this up to speed. -

Also, we would need to figure out the exact model of the display (HP has multiple WSXGA+ panel suppliers). If the model is not the same, then the color profile would be basically useless.
For now, the best advice I can give is go into the Nvidia Control Panel (right-click the Desktop and it's a menu option) and bump up the digital vibrance. Someone posted about that a few pages back.
This is the device I am using:

Could someone please tell me what needs to be run from SWSetup after a clean install? I keep getting errors with applications. A list of things to run would be great! Maybe Chaz could, you seem so knowlrdgeable about this thing. Could you list everything from SWSetup you ran?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For example when doing VIsta clean install do you need to run all the applications? All of the setup applications? Or just the application in the root folder (like do I need to just run BTOOTH/Setup or do I also need to go into the BTOOTH/x64/ and run the applications in here too? I am on 64 bit Vista btw.

Well, my DV5 should ship and get here next week (I'm expecting a shipping notification on Monday). I've made me a slipstreamed Vista SP1 disk and downloaded and burned all the latest drivers. Can't wait to do a nice, clean install. I noticed on the hp site that there are two card reader drivers, one realtek and one jmicron. Can anyone tell me which reader is in the DV5T?

This lil piece of technology looks very appealing for the price!
Really thinking about getting one of these. -
Hey Chaz, its just getting wierder. I tried a usb mouse in the combo port and it works. Also a card reader works. The vantec however does not spin up when I plug it in to the port. Oddly the same vantec drive works in the port of the other dv5t I have. This is really annoying. Anyone have any thoughts?

At first nothing seemed to work, so I just used standard USB connection to format the drive and put a partition on it. Then I tried several cable combinations with rebooting in between and still no drive recognized via Esata port.
Then I remembered that I did not assign a drive letter the drive, so did that via the USB interface. After that, I ejected it, plugged in the esata cable along then the standard USB cable which is a Y cable, but used the main data part of the Y, not the power part of the Y. Then a little program popped up called "Intel Matrix Storage Console", showing that the drive was indeed connected on Port 5, and then looking at what used to be "My Computer", the drive was also mounted.
Then I looked for it in the "Safely Remove Hardware" system tray and the tray itself was not there. Just to make sure, I plugged a third USB drive in, and the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon showed up, with only that 3rd drive (usb) available for removal. (I didn't expect the 2nd drive to be there because it was connected via Esata.)
I then unplugged the Esata drive, both cables, and the "Intel Matrix Storage Console" shows it going away as well as windows explorer.
I then connected the cables again, it would not show up.
Trying a second time, connecting the Esata first, then the USB power, then opening the Matrix Storage Console, there is an Action option to rescan for plug-and-play devices which I chose, and after about 45 seconds, the drive reconnected and was available for use.
Seems like the cabling order, and loose cables were my problem, and of course, no documentation, just luck. So it looks like plug-n-play is working via the Intel Matrix Console, which may be an HP added program, as I am not familiar with Vista.
Hope this helps you, if not someone else. -

S L O W FedEx from Shanghai ...
===================
hp in Shanghai shipped out my dv5t yesterday, 8/15, in the morning. I just now saw an update that indicates it is likely on a plane (the latest entry on FedEx.com was 8/16 4pm "in transit"). BUT, it also now has an estimated delivery date: 8/20th!! That's next Wednesday, which means it would have taken 5 days to get it from Shanghai to the east coast.
bummer.
so many people got theirs in 3 days (!) who live on the west coast or Arizona (i recall AZ, in particular).
I guess i can also continue to hope for the best since it's an "estimated delivery date", it might:
- get to Anchorage sooner, then
- Indianapolis really quickly, then
- off to the east coast.
I think Monday's not possible, Tuesday has a chance, and Wednesday most likely.
What are some other people's "in transit" and delivery stories? -

Yay, video drivers up to date and installed.
Now I need to get TF2 and CS:S working... -

Is there anything in the HP manual for this notebook that talks about the eSATA port?
The main issues you are going to hear about with this notebook are heat, battery life, and not getting the eSATA port to work. The heat isn't actually a problem as the notebook doesn't overheat, but it gets hotter than a normal notebook should. The battery life is well over 3 hours with the integrated graphics and high-capacity battery, but with the 9600M-GT it's only 2.5. And the eSATA port - well, see the posts on the previous two pages. -
Does anyone know what the Touchpad software does? It is conflicting with BT keyboard and was wondering if I should uninstall it?
-
-
Hey Chaz,
Quick Question:
do you recommend leaving the battery in or removing it when using AC power?
I'll have my dv7t on my desk using AC power about 85% of the time and I'm not sure whether I should leave it in or not.
It's nice to have it serve as a power backup, but there will be more heat I think, and will it hurt the battery's life?
Also, this question kind of depends on the 1st. Should I enable write caching and Enable Advanced performance on my HDD? I've heard that using these can cause problems if your computer shuts down unexpectedly (ie power outage). Is the performance gain noticeable and does it hurt the HDD at all?
What do you use?
Thanks a ton -
It sucks cause that's the day I go back to college so I won't much free time to fiddle with it.

be sitting on a charger for long periods of time. The long-term result will be
shortened battery life. If you need to operate your laptop on battery power,
go ahead and give it a full charge. When you're done with your session and
will not need it again, it should be stored in a cool place, at 40% capacity,
for best longevity.

I can see it on the Dutch site
Maybe it is not yet in stores, but if it is here it soon will be. -
Hey, sorry for the all the crap you've had to go through with HP, why dont you try again, ask for a manager and detail how big of a problem the situation is and mention that because of this service although you were an interested customer and often contributed to Dv5t forums your thinking of switching over to Dell or Sony. But at the very least try calling again (every operator is different) And dont take being on hold so badly, just remember your gonna get paid for this. and 200$ for even three hours on hold is **** decent money so chin up and try again.
PM if you have any questions -

^ good advice and i also went through a similar ordeal. i told them that it was HP reps mistake that the $400 coupon wasn't applied, and about maybe 2 hours later, after speaking to tons of people and calling 4 different 'hp' phone numbers, they said they would give me a credit of $250 - which i will only get AFTER i recieve the unit.. oddd....
if i get the unit and they do not give me the credit of $250, im sending it back for a refund. the hell with being screwed.
it's funny how HP can take your order of $2,000+ , charge you for it within seconds, yet to apply a coupon, you have to go through hell and BS....
If I am willing to give a company $2,000 for a product that they are making a killing on, applying a coupon shouldn't be that difficult... they should be happy im giving them business! it appears that HP is as stingy as scrooge mcduck.
-
I was told the same thing , that I would be credited with $250 , but next day somehow my order was cancelled and I was refunded the total amount subtracting the warranty amount . So i ordered it again and got it . Infact i am happy they cancelled it , coz my warranty had been shipped . Under APP, the 2 yr warranty is $170 and under normal its $250 . So , the next time I just orderd my notebook , and saved $80 just like that on top of the $200
-
Well, I must say I don't know hp that well, but when I call up because I just want to change my config on the system I just ordered hours before (which meant cancelling and reordering).. and the rep offers me $80 to keep the one I'm getting.. I thought they were quite generous. I was going to downgrade the screen res - glad I didn't now. But I get what you're saying. I'm sure glad they are giving you a big chunk back. -
From what I can gather from this forum, Nvidia doesnt release drivers specifically for there mobile cards anymore or something? Also, do the modified drivers support the new CUDA and Physixs stuff?
-
-
wish my laptop would ship ordered it on monday and build date is Aug 20th
at least have the warranty! >_> lol -
