I have my notebook set so nothing happens when I close the lid.

When I am not going to be using my notebook for a period of time (Sleeping, at work or school, out shopping etc etc) I just do a shutdown.

I don't know which method is the best in any sense, I just usually do a shutdown if I wont be using it or ill leave my computer idle and after 20 min I have it set to go into sleep mode.

It's definitely possible that they'll deliver early. As far as what time they normally deliver, that depends on your local driver. My dv5z arrived yesterday, and was first delivered at 8:50 AM (but to the wrong address). The driver went back, picked it up, and still had it to me just before 10:30 AM.

I ordered on the 11th, was supposed to ship by the 20th, got the email and tracking yesterday that says it'll arrive on the 21st by 10:30 am. I'm on Vacation until the 23rd. Glad I had it sent to my office so it'll be there on Monday when I get in.

    I'm currently using a dv6500 with a 12 cell battery, I'm wondering if it'll fit in the dv5t?

    guess we'll know on monday.

Has anyone replaced the memory themselves yet? I upgraded to 2x2(4GB) from newegg and vista still displays it as 2.00 GB. Is there anything at all I need to do? I'm concerned something might be wrong...anyone who has done this please respond, it would be greatly appreciated.

FedEx said it would get to me by 10:30am, driver came at like 8:30. I was sleeping. :( Had to go pick it up at the FedEx plant. So wake up extra early!

I got mine with the mic. Works pretty decently with TF2..

Is it not there as an option on the HP website?

It is no longer listed in the options configurator because it was never an option to begin with, since it was a standard fixed component that remains unchanged reguardless of configuration....

The problem with putting computers in sleep mode for AIM users is that you lose your away message, well at least you did back in the day. Wonder if thats changed. I always wondered if simply leaving your computer on all the time hurt it. I know it can't help it but I wonder how much it hurts.

    Question.

Never installed Memory before and still waiting for the next coupon cause it expired the day I was gonna order. I was gonna simply get 3 gigs of memory and then add another 2. Is there a free slot availible? I have never done anyhting like that before and looking at guides seems extremely easy. Thanks guys. Also, do you have to do anything for the computer to recognize it? I know to get the 64 bit as well.

There are only 2 sodimm slots for ram, and the computer should recognize the ram immediately at bootup.

Well, I'm sad to say I bit the bullet and went Intel for my laptop...there are very nice laptops due out based on AMD Puma (MSI GX630)...with college starting I couldn't wait any longer...So yesterday I put my order in for a DV5t with the following specs:

    • Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)
    • 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)
    • FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    • FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • [For BrightView Infinity] Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    • HP Color Matching Keyboard
    • Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
    • High speed 56K modem port
    • Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    • No TV Tuner w/remote control
    • High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    • Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    • 2-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Pick Up and Return
    • FREE DESKJET D1560 PRINTER

I stumbled onto a $200 Coupon Code so I just couldn't refuse for a total shipped price of $1,579.90 and once I get the printer rebate back, will be a total of $1509.90...I'll eventually upgrade the RAM from 2GB -> 4GB using NewEgg...why spend $150 for 4GB when you can spend about $55 at NewEgg for the exact same thing....

I figure I have 21 days from the time I recieve the laptop to decide if I want to keep it or not (maybe a PUMA model comes available), but I doubt I'll find something loaded like this one for much cheaper...now the long wait for Fedex to arrive... :(

I just ordered the 4 gig kit from NewEgg...5.5% cashback from live.com.

I have Vista home 32 on my DV6500 and it used to show 3.25gb ram which I understood was normal for the operating system, but for the longest time it's been telling me I have 4 gigs when I check the system properties. I'm not complaining, just wondering what changed?

No you need to buy a 4GB kit because there are only 2 ram slots. If you order 2GB from HP, they will give you 2x1GB sticks.

Well...one of my 2 (2GB) sticks from newegg was defective. :(
I called their cust serv and they emailed me a return label and are issuing me a replacement. Make sure Vista recognizes 4.00GB RAM after you replace them, mine only recognized 2.00GB, so one of the sticks was defective. I have to return both of the sticks to them though, so full replacement was issued. Just a heads up to you folks.

    Hey all,

Did any of you use Live Cashback to get an extra 5% of your purchase? If so, you might be in for a rude awakening. It seems like I am being denied my cash back because I used a coupon for my purchase. I emailed Live Cashback and they said they would post my cashback unless HP denies the claim, which they ultimately did.

    See section 17g here: http://help.live.com/help.aspx?project=searchtou&market=en-us

Has anyone been successful in getting their cashback posted to their account yet?

Check local places like a Circuit City. I got my HP dv5t for $850 after a $50 rebate.

    It has:
Intel P7350 2.00 Ghz and 3 MB Cache
    4 GB RAM
Intel Media Accelerator X4500 (I'm not a gamer)
250 GB Hard Drive 5400 RPM
    Built in wireless and bluetooth
    Webcam
    Vista Home Premium 64 bit

Haven't had any problems yet except for fingerprints on the touchpad; but that's no biggy. Also quicktime's driver is semi-compatible (quicktime still works for me, but the buttons do not show up).

I ordered a dv5t using the 5% off coupon and my wife's APP account just before the $400 coupon (when the Live.com from HP was 10%!) and it showed up immediately. Of course, I canceled that order when the $400 coupon showed up, but over a week later the cashback for the second purchase (at 5%) hasn't shown up yet. I sent an e-mail to Live customer support, but haven't heard back yet. =(

I was nervous before, but now I'm really nervous.

edit: Actually, after checking out fatwallet, I'm really annoyed with live. They also give 5% back, and actually explicitly mention the latest coupon code when you link through them. So HP can't just completely be rejecting all `cashback' requests because you used a coupon. (That and fatwallet gives you a tracking number that you can use, whereas live.com dosen't give you squat!).

I mentioned Fatwallet and Ebates in my email to Live Cashback as well. I asked them to make an exception this one time. Let's see how well their customer service is. I also won't be very happy knowing that I could have gotten 5% from Ebates or Fatwallet while now getting nothing. I mean $40-50 back is nothing to sneeze at -- that is a memory purchase.

my wrist started hurting from typing so much - i was checking the status every 20 f*in minutes.

then last night i said forget it, i'll just see the laptop when it gets here.

then a couple of minutes ago, i got an email saying they've shipped my unit.

i swear, they're toying with me. that's not right.

I got the dv5t and i managed to downgrade to XP.

most of the drivers i have been able to find and make them work successfully.

however i cant find drivers for bluetooth for xp and the audio drivers are a bit weird since they shuffled the ports but thats manageable.

    although, people... bluetooth drivers please.

if anyone can find bluetooth drivers for this, i would be more than grateful.

That means if you buy a Vista disk in a store or online that is a RETAIL version, your key is good for both 32 and 64 bit. If you buy an oem copy (which is what will come preinstalled on your computer), the key is only good for the version of windows you purchased with it. If you bought 32 bit, your key will only activate 32 bit.

oh really. thanks for telling me that.

since you bought the laptop from an Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM), the OS is oem too and according to orc1989, 32bit keys only work with 32bit copies. so you need to buy a 64 bit key/license to use 64 bit

edit: chris beated me to it

Looking back.. wish I had not gotten the 4gb of RAM..should've stuck with the 2 and gotten the 4 through newegg or cheaper.. I think I was just looking for some upgrades to get to $1299. I could've gotten the tuner even..oh well lol It's so easy in hindsight, as always. I did well on the price (thx to you guys). And I'm not good with the hardware side of things, so maybe adding RAM would've freaked me out (though I did install a tv tuner into my desktop - I can't tell you how proud I was of myself) lol <--just trying to make myself feel better..

Ashley, I can relate! I fiddled about with the options on my order, but realistically I think I could have saved 100 dollars on two options in particular and gotten a tuner instead. However, when I was first composing the order I tried researching the tuner, and I didn't find much information about it....thus making me opt to spend that 100 dollars on other options. It was (and still is) quite the back and forth for me when it comes to exactly what options I should have ordered :). Oh well, overall I still think many of us made out like bandits on this one given the price and quality involved
