Hey, if you have to return this thing, do you have to return it to China (Shanghai)? Just curious.

Congratulations to everyone who ordered. :)
I only have my dv5t - the other notebook is an ASUS M50VM review unit. I'll have a full review of that up within a week from now.

It is always maddening with these coupons. You purchase and never know if something better will come along. I need to just accept things and accept that I have a pretty good computer -- there will always be a cheaper price the next day, but at sometime you have to take the plunge :)

things are priced so nicely right now. i just ordered a set of these puppies:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-THX-...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1219188275&sr=1-1

    (logitech z-5500 speakers)

i currently just have a 2-speaker and sub setup, which was quite good, but i wana go crazy so they're on their way over :-D

when i first saw these speakers, maybe a year ago, they were between $350 and $399.

i just picked them up for $189.99 + tax + a whopping $37 for shipping because the box weighs like 50 pounds - literally. total was under $250 still! ;-D

    absolutely

for me, the bottom line is that I paid $829 for a laptop that here in canada would cost me $1400 for with about all my specs brought down to the lowest level possible

I just bought a HP DV5-1009TX, and every now and then I keep getting a small screen comming up that says "HID DATA has stopped working, Windows is trying find a solution" thinks for a bit then doesn't and I have to press cancel to get rid of it, sometimes the same screen comes up several times at once, does anyone have this problem, or does anyone know a fix??? I have a feeling the Microsoft bluetooth laser mouse could be doing it, in device manager under Human Interface Devices (HID) there is a heap of things listed as well as the mouse, the mouse apears to have the correct and updated driver. Any Ideas...anyone, its pretty anoying after a while.

im not sure if the dv5t supports 5.1 but i know the dv7t - the model i ordered and am waiting for - supports 7.1 via its integrated sound card.

for a finite answer, i'd call hp and ask. it'd only take 2 minutes.

does anyone know if hp offers any 12 cell or increased capacity battery for the dv5t???

I've scoured the hp website for any batteries for the dv5t and have found nothing. It's been awhile since the dv5t came out, shouldn't there be anything yet?

    Guys,

I just got back from BestBuy and compared the Infinity screen to the old "non frameless" look and well.....I think the Infinity looks a bit washed out....a bit grainier than the thinner screen. Whatever it is, i compared it on the 5t, 5z, and 7t models to their older HP models and it was the same on all. Infinity made the quality drop.

How do I cancel / amend my order? I want my $50 back.

ah ha! so there are others that feel the same way. i also placed an order with the infinity screen only to go to bestbuy and find out that i absolutely hate it.

i have not recieved my dv7t yet so i am not making any decisions as of now but i can say with confidence that the infinity screen in bright/florescent setting is absolutely terrible.

when i get it, im going to use it for a while and see how it does in my apartment. however, at best buy, after using the infinity unit (it was also a dv7t) for about 15 minutes, i got a terrible headache, to my eyes, it seems like everything is a little bit blurry or not as crisp as it can/should be.... for history, i do not wear glasses at all and my vision is near perfect.

i compared pictures on the infinity vs non infinity and actually the non infinity screen looked nicer. you're right about the graininess and graying... i could not find a single angle where i moved either myself or the laptop screen to get absolutely no glare. glare occurs (on both screens) practically 15-20% on the screens surface which is absolutely unacceptable. spending time behind a screen liek that could seriously damage your eyes!

You get a confirmation email after you order your laptop online. Near the bottom of that email there's a little paragraph about returns and exchanges. In that paragraph there's a link to the hp site with the correct phone number to call to request a cancelling. They guy will be pestering you as to why you cancelled. Just tell email your changing the configuration.

Also, there's no guarantee that you will successfully cancel your order. When I called hp to cancel my first dv5t configuration they said the was shipped to the factory alreadyand they could be building it. If this happens the laptop will be sent to you no matter what. When you get the laptop that you don't want call hp about the directions to return cuz they have a 21 day return policy.

I called hp about canclling the laptop and thisis what the guy told me. Thankfully I got an email confirmation saying that my orderwas cancelled. If you don't get this cancellation confirmation, it means your laptop is coming. Itsno big, just return it, but it's more of a hassle..

And they might tempt you to not do it by offering you at least $80. Be strong - I wasn't :) But I'm glad now - my change would've been a mistake. Also, they will charge your credit card for the second computer, but will refund the one you return when they get it. The rep told me that I wouldn't have to pay the return shipping though.. ?

Hey.. no one answered my (probably dumb) question earlier. For the non-gamer.. will 4mb vs 2mb be noticeable?

Idk why you guys are complaining about the infinity screen. I had a dv5t without the infinity screen which i returned(wanted a different proc.) and I have a new one with a infinity screen and I love it. It doesnt look any grey or duller than the one with out infinity. They use the same plastic for both. The only thing is that there is more glare. It makes the laptop look much more sleek too. Like I said it doesnt affect the color of the screen at all though idk what you guys are talking about

There are actually 2 Vista product keys you get with your computer. The first one is on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. The other one is the one that the manufacturer uses to register your copy (this is the OEM license). This is the same one that is obtained when you do the clean install (with the ABR activation program).

The OEM one is bit specific. From what I'm lead to believe, the product key on the sticker can be used to register either 32 or 64 bit versions (but requires talking to Microsoft rep to activate).

...at least that's what I gather from it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

After doing much (and I mean much) research, I went with 64 bit. Unless you have certain software or devices that are older and don't work with x64, then you should get x64. It's the future.

I struggled with this and originally ordered mine with 32 bit. After some soul searching, I changed my mind and went x64. I'm glad I did. I don't know if I'm reaping any benefits yet, other than 4 GB of RAM, but I've had no problems with software or peripherals.

    2.4 or 2.53?

No gaming or anything. I'm so close to pulling the trigger and i'm looking at everything. All ill be doing is itunes, with firefox going, and possibly some office. Every year over christmas I get into a Football Manager mode which is a glorified spreadsheet if you dont know what it is.

Im going to newegg and getting it up to 4 gigs as well along with those nasty 2.1 logitech speakers to hook up to this badboy.

Save your money and battery. Go for the 2.4Ghz P8600 - only 25W compared to 35 for the 2.53GHz Processor

Got my laptop 2 days ahead of time. Love it. However...

The left palm rest gets really warm and the bigger issue is every time I hit the space bar, it squeaks. Sounds something like when you rub two balloons together. Any idea what could be causing this? I am in law school and don't want to bother my neighbors and it is starting to get on my nerves...

If I return the laptop, would it void my 3 year accidental damage deal or would this be something different? Anyone deal with HP in regards to returns? Wondering if it is worth the hassle?

Thanks again. For anyone on the fence, I really like the laptop, really sleek looking (have infinity design, though it has a lot of glare) and all the upgrades (2.53 cpu, 320 gig harddrive, high res monitor, finger print reader and camera and did the newegg memory deal). Also, did not realize that the remote came with the laptop, almost bought another one.

Yeah from what I've been hearing, between the two processors (the 2.4 and the 2.53) there isn't much of a difference at all except the part where the 2.53 costs more money and sucks up more power from your battery. So in other words just save your money and battery and go with the 2.4 processor. :)

Hm, i bought the 2.53 Ghz processor, was this a bad choice (figured it was the only thing to get to reach the 400$ coupon minimum) ? I'm not sure how mobile i will be with my laptop, how much is the battery difference from 2.4 and 2.53 ghz?

There is a certain logic to saving money and getting the lower power cpu, but the decision isn't really that cut and dry.

For example you won't likely notice the clockspeed difference of 130mhz between the two processors, but the t9400 has twice the cache which can have an imact in gaming:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cache-size-matter,1709.html

There is a savings in power usage going with the 25w p8600 vs. the 35w t9400, but that should mostly come into play when the processor is running full speed/full voltage as during gaming, etc... when my lappy is typically plugged in and battery not being drained. If someone isn't gaming much when they are on battery then a 25w vs. 35w processor might not impact much. But that same gamer might enjoy the performance the extra cache gives.

Just FYI, when you guys say that the 2.4 is 25W and the 2.5 is 35W that is the TDP rating. That doesnt mean that the processors use that much energy. It means that you need a CPU heat sink that disperses 35W or 25W of heat. If you look at the voltages for each cpu (which is what you would look at to determine electricity use) the difference between the two is only .0500 volts if my memory serves me correct.

Yay! Mine shipped. Sherlock, I ordered mine on the 14th with a built by date of 8/21.. so I bet yours will either ship today or tomorrow.
How weird to look at the Fedex tracking and see Shanghai China!

So when do you guys think it'll get here to Virginia?
And it says it was picked up at 10:35 am ..but to the right it says "package received after FedEx cutoff" ??? What does that mean?

This .5 volts is typical to turn the chip on. But seeing as power (watts) is a fuction of both voltage and current (P = I*E), my assumption would be that the P series draw less current. I work on circuit boards all day. I have various IC's on the board that all power up with 5 volts, but all draw current differently. If the P and T series drew the same current, there would be no need for a 25 and 35 wattage rating, none the less different heat sinks.

Most power sources are also rated in kilowatt hours, so current draw would be a factor in how long your battery lasted as well.

^ That's what I was thinking too 5strings. If the T series dissipates a difference of 10W compared to the P series, it must draw more current than the P.

My dv5t is shipping this Thursday. My newegg memory is also arriving the same day. My Zalman NC2000 is arriving on Friday. I hope it all works out.

Mine says it was "received after FedEx cutoff" too. Anyone know what that means?
