Hello, I got a question here:
What's the difference between the Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM) AND the 802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth ?
Same price and I'm a n00b with lan/wireless card specs....
Thanks!![]()

it seems that the cards based on DDR3 perform better than their DDR2 counterparts. the 9600M GT DDR3 version is able to get upto 5712 points in 3DMark06
-
Lord Egregious Notebook Evangelist
Yeah it unfortuneate that the 9600 GT in the dv5t isn't DDR3. Those are crazy benchmarks.
I made recovery discs right after I got my laptop than I reformated with a clean vista disc. Now I want to delete the HP recovery partition but I can't because I don't have the program. Will it be alright to just delete it using the drive manager in vista? -
what number did you call to get credit back for the new price with the 30% coupon
-
YAY! Someone understands my "clicky" shift key problem!!
My space bar is slighty louder than the others...but I think this is only because it's the longest key (attaches in more places than the others).
However, my SHIFT key "double clicks," so yes, I know exactly what you're talking about. I wanted to return it for that reason alone. I could live with the speaker grill defect, which my laptop also has. However, the clicky sound was driving me nuts. My config is also 2k...so yeah, I called and complained. I was going to just send it back, and buy a new one with the 30% off coupon (a difference of *ouch* $700) - however (I posted previously about this), since they no longer have some of the options to configure it with, they couldn't or wouldn't give me the same config, and as such, couldn't give me the coupon offer.
I was on the phone for 1.5 hours. I went through 3 reps, and 2 different "supervisors." I got to the guy who said he was the highest-up supervisor there. The other reps had offered me a $200 credit, he up'd it to $260. I figured, since $260 is what I paid for the extended warranty, I'd take that at face value and accept the offer. I did the math, and had I been able to configure another model with the exact same specs, and NOT including the peripherals I picked up when I purchased my laptop, that in all, I overpaid about $300. Something I guess I can live with if it means having my laptop in time to start classes with on Tuesday.
So yeah, I was pissed...but I've learned to live with the clicky shift key (push down, then pushes down a little more...like it's not sitting right!!). I figure, when it pops off, I'll get that *free* extended warranty to send me a new keyboard
Otherwise, I love this laptop. Like I said originally, the grill cover not fitting perfectly just means I can tell people "there's so much cool crap in there, HP couldn't fit it all in!" -
I'm not going to do the vista clean install...So if I'm manually installing stuff, I just go to the control panel and remove it? And then I need to download a program to get the bits left behind, right? Which program do I use to do that? Or do I use the program to uninstall from the beginning and not go to control panel? Thanks!
-
Okay so this is great news. I used the 200 dollar off coupon on august 23rd. my total came out to be about $1004 after tax. since the new 30% off coupon came out i found i could configure the same dv5t to be about $932 after tax, which was 72 bucks cheaper. i called hp sales support at 1 866 638 2088 and talked to phil and let him know i could configure my laptop cheaper with the new coupon. he then put me on the phone with his supervisor. she said i had the options of cancelling the order and making an new one (no way, mine will be here in a few days), or to give me a discount back into my bank of $92!!!
so i basically got my $1,225 dv5 for $837.49 (about $910 after $75 in tax) -
I had a question for the owners here. how does the atsc tuner work? Does it work out of the box, do you need an external tuner, something else?
From what I get on hp's page, every dv5t comes with a atsc tuner, but not an ntsc tuner. Is this correct as well? -
Thanks Chicago. I think I'll exchange it when I get it. Everyone seems to be happy with it so far.
-
the 30% off code right now. It was almost 423 off.
-
HA! Thanks for the phone number Justin. My previous post yesterday said that they credited me $260 for the defective speaker grill. I was a little upset settling for that, and the supervisor I spoke to was anything but helpful and a little bit of a pain...So after reading this post I decided to try again.
I got someone in the US initially, and she didn't seem to think there was ANY problem with crediting the difference in the coupons - which is completely contrary to what the supervisor told me yesterday evening. She transferred me to her supervisor (in India), and thankfully this supervisor was much more helpful than yesterday. When I said the problem was that there was a price difference after coupons, she didn't jump straight to the point and say she couldn't do that - like the guy yesterday did. She calculated the difference - at the same time I was doing it on the phone. 30% of the price I paid was about $654! Originally I received an instant rebate of $100, and used a coupon for $114 off. So factor those in and I still overpaid by $440! She said she'd have to factor in the $260 credit they gave me yesterday (even though that credit was given for a defective part...which I find to be a little fishy!), which means they still owed me $180.
Then she realized that there was a conversation on record with me and THE OTHER SUPERVISOR from yesterday...uh oh spaghetti-ohs...she asked me to hold while she checked with him...****, I've been found out...I was about to hang up when she came back and said he was still on another call. HAH! So, she credited me the $180!! So, in total, I got $440 back!
So, yeah, try that number from Justin's post and hope for only one transfer...and NOT that one supervisor who didn't want to play along!
[Sorry for all math - I know it's erroneous to the post - but I couldn't help myself, I was pretty stoked about it!] -
yep yep yep. i got such a good deal on this laptop. i wonder if they are going to be ending all of the promotions soon.
as for you auntymegs, you should be credited for the defective part PLUS the price difference under your price protection. all you have to do is build your laptop with the same exact configuration at hp.com while you are logged in, enter the coupon code to have your new price new price, and call them for them to verfiy the price difference. you should be getting the new lower price AND the credit from your defective part. i would call them asap.
i went to hp chat, and called hp so many times before i got a hold of the right people to get my credit back. i was given the run around a few times from hp saying price protection isn't valid with new coupons until i called this number 18666382088. -
there is a software tool that will do that for you on hp's site. look for it.
the reps screwed up my credit and only gave me half. i called back and complained. they fixed it b/c it was all recorded in the notes. good grief. -
For the record, "that guy" is me, and my name is David

Hi, The dv5t i took apart had the intel card; however, I would not stress over wireless cards. I believe the non intel card is made by broadcom, a huge manufacturer of good quality wireless products. If you dont use bluetooth, and you are getting a good wireless connection, then your card is fine. Also, you can ALWAYS upgrade it later. You have to use an intel card in order to get the centrino sticker on your laptop. Its all really a marketing ploy. The intel card does have a draft version of wireless N, but if you arent using N, then you wont notice any advantage. To sum it up, the card you have will be fine
Take care.

There are 4 screws hidden under the top edge of the keyboard. In order to get to those, you have to remove the entire speaker grill assembly above the keyboard. This requires two screws from the bottom of the laptop in the upper corners to be removed first. Then there are some little clips that hold the top edge above the quickplay buttons, volume control, etc that you must get to unsnap. A fingernail seems to work best in my experience. Then the top edge of the entire speaker grill assembly will lift up. You then slide it back toward the monitor to get it to slip out from under the lower top of the laptop. One you remove it, you will see the four screws on the top of the keyboard. Remove them, slid the keyboard back, and it will come out. This assumes that you have removed all the screws on the bottom side of the laptop that hold the keyboard as well. They have the little keyboard symbol next to them. Hope this helps.

Is anyone else having trouble logging into their account? I'm being told mine is no longer in the system.
Edit: Your HP store account. -
scared me for a minute too, it works now

Will the dv5t take advantage of 3.0 Gb/sec SATA drives? I'm getting a backup drive.
Thanks
JohnG -
Mine isn't working either....
-
Make sure you click on the "home" tab. The default tab is coming up for the small bus division.
JohnG -
to have the centrino 2 sticker your laptop should also use an intel graphics card
-
Actually thats not correct. To get the Centrino sticker, you must have an Intel chipset. Whether it has built in graphics or not does not matter. Case in point is my current dv5t which has the Intel P45 chipset. No internal graphics in this version of the chip, but I do have the nifty Centrino sticker. Internal graphics is the G45 version of the chipset. All from the same mobile express 45 chipset family. So, to sum up, Centrino requires 1. Intel CPU, 2. Intel chipset, and 3. Intel wireless lan card. Now its time for bed. Good night all.

anyone know when the 12cell for the dv5t is gonna be available
or if it is already? -
Hey people have u seen the Acer 5930G, it has exactly the same config as the dv5t but the 9600m gt has DDR3 memory, and its abit cheaper as well, what do u say chaz abt this acer?

They're not normal from HP's perspective . . . but based on what we are seeing in this thread, the speaker grill is misaligned on one side for most. It's not harmful and will not have any long-term effects . . . it is simply a quality control issue. The mute light seems to be another common issue, but that is software-related.
I am not having any problems with my dv5t; the only 'issue' is the misaligned speaker grill on the left side, but this does not bother me and I didn't notice it until someone pointed it out.
That is odd. I use the equalizer in iTunes. When I get back to my dv5t, I'll see if I remember to test for that.
Nice config, and congrats on the notebook.
1. You're not the first person to talk about clicky keys. The only thing I can think of is that some of the keyboards got manufactured differently. Unless it's causing any problems, I wouldn't worry about it.
2. It's not defective, and the noise is normal. A lot of chargers make noise.
I'd call HP and get the keyboard replaced. -
Oh I am starting to lose faith in HP. A few days ago my dv5t arrived, it had a dead pixel so I called HP to replace the machine with the same configuration. However, the tv tuner is no longer an option so I told the rep. to just substitute the blu ray option instead. When I ordered I quoted the 30% off coupon and they said yes it would be applied. I did not ask for any additional discount I just wanted the same deal I would have if I ordered over the website. I even went step by step through each item to confirm the proper configuration.
I was told the new laptop order would be placed when I mail the dv5t back to HP. I mailed it yesterday and today the order confirmation for the replacement came in my e-mail. I thought everything was going smoothly until I read the order. The screen had been downgraded, the hard drive downgraded, no bluetooth, and no 30% coupon listed in the order.
Now its back to square one and calling and dealing with HP's customer service reps who speak broken English.
I guess the moral of the story is don't trust the HP sales reps; order from the website instead. -
My replacement dv5t is being built without me sending in my old one. I'm not sending it back until I get my replacement. Also, I was promised a $400 credit (matches the original $400 off coupon that many of us got) but it still hasn't shown up in my credit card. I hope my replacement dv5t arrives with correct specs and issue free.
Good luck with your order Zoner. HP customer service is disappointing. -
I agree. The person I spoke to on the phone was obviously not a technical person in the way they were reading it(when they start reading the abbreviations as is, I start getting worried), so I graciously declined(4 times) to order through him(I was getting a RMA number) and ordered through the website instead
-
I was really stressing about that. I'm not familiar with wireless cards but I do use bluetooth. I guess I'll just keep the one I have. Thanks, David!
-
Wow Cable! I called HP's C/S yesterday to inquire about the process of returning my laptop to change the configuration (when I was thinking of changing my wireless card) but the rep I spoke to told me they would not process a new order until they received my return. How did you get someone to process your order without first returning the old one? Maybe because your laptop was defective?
-
^ Yes, I had dead pixels in mine so that is probably why. I had to go through Tech Support first and then get a case manager assigned. New laptop is expected to arrive 9/2. We'll see if the credit is applied before then. I'm tempted to call HP and ask for the 30% discount.

Can anyone answer this please?
"I'm not going to do the vista clean install...So if I'm manually installing stuff, I just go to the control panel and remove it? And then I need to download a program to get the bits left behind, right? Which program do I use to do that? Or do I use the program to uninstall from the beginning and not go to control panel? Thanks"
Also, to comment on clicky/loud keys as some others have mentioned...some of mine are too. The shift and space bar key somewhat, and the backspace key especially. -
Does the dv5t take advantage of 3.0 Gb/sec SATA drives? I'm getting a backup drive.
Thanks
JohnG -
just got mine yesterday. not going to clean install it since i am too lazy to download the isos. spent about 3 hours removing various stuff, and now 48 processes on startup.
-
You can use the control panel or the program's uninstall routine. To clean up the leftover bits use ccleaner. Ccleaner has a tool to uninstall programs, also.
-
How many processes were indicated when you started the cleanup?
-
it was actually not that bad, about 60 to 70. they wisely left most of the bloatware uninstalled. the only thing that gave me some trouble was HP's own 'helpful' programs.
-
Did you get a 'before' benchmark?
-
Re: the mute button on the quick launch bar.
Mine is always staying the same color, not matter if I am muted or not? It works, but never turns color. It doesn't turn white when it is unmuted.
Anyone else seeing this problem? -
Whats the chance of me getting something back because of this 30% coupon? Also, how do I check if I have a faulty keyboard and dead pixels?
-
jmfightspam...
I did a clean install and put on vista ultimate 64 bit...
I was having that problem of the color changes for the quickplay buttons until i installed all the quickplay software...that fixed it for me...
maybe uninstall the quickplay and quicktouch drivers and then reinstall them from the swsetup folder...
rusch...
to check for deal pixels...look at a solid color screens...itll show up as a tiny dot
how to check for a faulty keyboard? i dunno...just type i guess... -
Lord Egregious Notebook Evangelist
UDPixel is a stuck pixel program. Dead pixels are unfixable while stuck pixels have a chance of being fixable and they appear bright in color but never change color. The program will show all black or all yellow to show stuck pixels. It then rapidly changes colors to try to fix any stuck pixels.
-
Two questions...
1) I thought the dv5t had a lit keyboard? Doesn't that mean there is light under the keys?
2) What is the button above the keypad???
Figured out my question #2
Turns off the keypad.
-
Lord Egregious Notebook Evangelist
There isn't any lights behind the keys.
Hows the heat on the dv5t going for everyone? I can't decide if I'm gonna like it or not still. -
Everyday tasks heat is fine..
Gaming is when I can cook an egg on it..
-
does anyone know where i can get the most updated version of quickplay?
i see that there is an update for it, but when i click on it, it doesn't do anything.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
mine doesn't get all that hot. not to say that it doesn't heat up.
of course mine has a cooler under it.
