For startup, I don't think you need the health check scheduler, the youcam, or digital imaging. I don't use windows defender, but if you use it, you can leave it enabled.

On a different note, I'd just got off the phone with HP and am really impressed with their customer service. I just bought a dv4t, and wasn't satisfied with it. I was able to exchange it for a dv5t and pay the difference, which ended up being ~20 bucks with the new 30% off coupon code compared to the old $300 off one. They instantly gave me an rma#, and customized my new laptop w/ the coupon code right there. So yeah, HP's customer service REALLY impressed me. (btw, 2 reps were indian and one was american, in case you were wondering. but they were easily understandable)

That's what I've thought so far. It seems like HP actually cares who their customer reps are. When I use to talk to Dell reps I could almost never understand them. I've talked to many India reps already and they have all been easily understandable.

I was on the phone with HP earlier and had a much better experience compared to the last time I spoke with them.

I told them about the 30% coupon, and I was credited $196. Something about the $100 instant rebate when I ordered, plus a 5% coupon I used and APP discount brought it to be $196.

I also told them about my girlfriends computer, and her card is being credited $85 aswell.

No hard drive will use the full bandwidth provided by a 3.0Gbps SATA II interface . . . whatever drive you get will not be held back by the dv5t's interface.

When I hit the scroll button, the light doesn't come on. The caps lock light works though. Is my scroll lock light broken or is there a way I can turn it on somehow? Thanks!

yeah i notice that on my dv4t too. i guess the scroll lock is not really used much by anyone anymore so there is no indicator for it. but when i press it though, i get a scroll lock on indicator on the lower right hand corner of the desktop screen

The indicator seems to work only for the "num lk" function, which you can turn on by pressing fn + scroll (num lk).

I never would have thought people would enjoy seeing the inside of a laptop so much. Ever since I posted the pictures of the dv5t all torn down, I have been getting all kinds of private messages :) For my next show, I may be opening up an HDX. Let me know if anyone wants to see pictures of that too. I am currently trying to devise a fix for the speaker grill missalignments, but its not going to be easy. Thanks for all the positive comments. Everyone have a great holiday weekend.

    Hi you guys,

I think i might take the plunge and buy one of these.

    But first a quick question.

When i come upon the check-out stage at hp it ask if you want to pay by credit card or hp financing or paypal...

I dont have a credit card or paypal account.

But i do have a visa DEBIT card. Would this work for the transaction? Have any of you guys payed with a debit card?

    Thanks,
    huy

Hairpeace... good find on the num lk key.. I'm sure they meant for the light to come on only for the num lk, right?

For anyone who has performed an exchange and told that they'd be charged the difference for the interim until the product ships, can you tell me how long it took you to get that money returned? My product shipped three hours ago, but there's no sign of my money being returned. I don't want to call just yet if it's still processing however.

^ it takes HP DAYS AFTER THEY RECEIVE THE PRODUCT TO ISSUE THE REFUND. i returned a laser mouse, shipped it on a tuesday - they got it on a monday i think, my refund came the following week.

your order status will say that the return + credit is complete but all banks take some time in order to put the $ back into your account. once it's back in yoru account, the date of the transaction will be the date in which HP recieved the returned product.

    hth.

LOL - you will definitely not have the $ back 3-hours after shipping. 2 to 3 weeks (max) is most like it - whether it's $1 or $1,000 .

I am only saying what they said. If they meant 2-3 weeks after shipping, they should have said 2-3 weeks after shipping, not "you will get your 350 back when the exchange item ships." That's a blatant lie and misleading according to what you said.

I still don't understand why I was charged the difference anyway in the first place. That makes completely no sense at all.

Maybe you don't understand the problem here. I already said it earlier in the thread.

I ordered a dv5t on August 14. Price was $967. On August 22, I received it. It was the completely wrong notebook and completely different than what I ordered. The packing slip listed the correct specs; the notebook was wrong. I called them, Fedex picked it up on August 25. My order went in production on August 26, and I was charged $321, which is the price difference between my notebook and a notebook without the promotional code. I was assured my $321 would be returned when the product ships. The product shipped; my $321 still missing. Why do I have to wait 3 weeks for it? That makes no sense at all. I need my money back -- money that I never intended to spend in the first place, but was forced to due to their own huge errors.

they do not issue the refund if your product is being shipped right now. they only work on pricing issues (applying coupons, issuing refunds, credits, etc) once the notebook is in your hands for a day or so. and when this happens, it takes banks several days to reflect the amount credited back to you in their systems and for that transaction to show up on your record.

why they charged you $321 seems odd. regardless, if they said that you will get that money back, expect to see it in your bank account in 5 to 7 business days AFTER the laptop is delivered into your hands.

that's how HP works. it's odd but several people are going through similar proceedings on the dv7t thread.

i actually got a dv7t and sent it back while ordering a new one at the same time. so as of right now, hp has charged my about $4300 for 2 laptops. i shipped out my 1st unit and they recieved it yesterday.

now that they have it in their hands, i will wait the 5-7 business days for them to credit the $2300 or so back to my credit card since the 1st laptop has been returned.

My first dv5t had some "defects" too, as in they sent me the wrong one. They also issued me an RMA. What I'm asking is how do you have your credit before you have your item? Both of you are saying two different things.

    DVD Playback issues:

i just put in a film dvd for the first time since i got my dv5t (about a week and half) and i noticed 2 issues:

    1) the volume is VERY low. it is too low to hear what they are saying and you really have to struggle or be within 6 inches of the speakers!! the room is VERY quiet to boot. am i the only one encountering this issue?

    2) when i first inserted the DVD, i got a Quickplay Region Selection mode, asking me if i want to "keep the current region code" or "change the region code" and it states that there are 5 changes remaining for this DVD player. Well, the current region code is USA and i thought, that's fine, so i clicked "keep the current region code". the DVD tray popped out and there was no other option but to push the tray back in after a few seconds (just to let the software "settle down"). the same thing happened. there appeared to be no way out. I then felt like i was FORCED to choose "change the region code" since there was no way to play the disc otherwise, since the dvd tray would just pop out! that appears to have "taken" and it "accepted" my choice of "change the region code".

Very strange. So the current setting is "USA" and i was unable to "remain with this region setting", and i had to "change my region code" to EXACTLY the same region: "USA".

May I ask if anyone else had this issue?

    thanks!

Try getting into the player via the Cyber DVD program. I had the same
volume issues at first, but I am now able to set it to quite acceptable
levels. Make sure you have plenty of master volume, before playing the
    DVD, also

    Hi Rob,

    thx for your reply...still no a/c ...

what is CyberDVD? need i download it separately? i have not seen this at all during my clean re-install.

btw, the clean install of Vista took SO much energy and time! it took me like 3 days! ugh.

in the hp QuickPlay main menu, UPPER RIGHT SIDE, there's a "gear" icon which is a Settings menu (next to the question mark icon). i clicked that and selected Audio Boost, and besides "default" option, there are three "Boost" options: Level 1 boost, Level 2 boost, and Level 3 boost.

it appears as though each successive level increases the volume. I chose Level 3 boost as my volume was incredibly low on that dvd (btw, it was the Planet Earth dvd set from BBC), but i also tried one other dvd and it was very low as well.

that Level 3 boost did the job. it is now sufficiently loud. i could not expect it to be much louder due to the tiny sizes of the speakers.

i don't believe this is what, Rob, you said was "CyberDVD"? i am quite sure that i was in the QuickPlay full screen when i did all of this.

your config looks solid. umm, you might want to upgrade to 4gb since you have 64bit vista and you're a gamer; it won't hurt if you can afford it.

Definitely go the 4GB Newegg route. Doing the memory yourself is a no brainer, especially at the rate HP charges you.

TV tuner: Do you really need it, or would it be just a toy? I don't even use the one in my desktop, so I would skip that one.

Just a heads up, I can't seem to get the fingerprint reader going in Firefox - it may be a 64-bit issue, I don't know yet, as 3 Fingerfox installs have failed. Works great in IE though...

Whats everybody seeing for typical ram useage at idle and how many processes. I am seeing about 1.1-1.2GB used and about 60 processes. I went through and already removed some of the junk HP put on there and disabled indexing and defender and a few other services.

Since I have 4GB installed does it really matter how much is used at idle or a few windows open. With a few programs open I see about 1.7-1.8GB being used. Firefox and SVChost seem to take the take the biggest hit on ram.

Thx for the heads up and comment all. The tv tuner I wanted to use to record TV programs mostly I'm not sure indeed how much I will use it.

Does the firefox browser itself work well with the 64-bit? Can anybody else comment on the firefox fingerprint reader issue on same or different expierences?

Although Firefox is only available in 32-bit, it works just fine in Vista x64.

I'm currently doing another clean install using a customized Vista DVD (with vLite). I took out things like Media Center, Media Player, the languages, blah blah blah. I'll update when finished.

with firefox and a game updater open, i am seeing 68 processes and a memory usage of 1.2gb. this is also with some antispyware, antirootkit and other protective programs open as well. i am using a steady 30% and so far ive rarely gotten my memory usage above 50%. also 4 or 5 processes from my logitech mouse and bluetooth processes are running as well. idk why it takes that many to use a bluetooth mouse though...

this is all after i did a clean install and installed 4gb ram from newegg
:D , i must say im quite happy with my laptop so far, no problems at all from any software or hardware during the week ive had it.

When I ordered my replacement dv5t, I informed the case manager that I had used the $400 coupon on my first dv5t and that it was only fair that the coupon be transferred to the replacement notebook. The case manager took some time but in the end agreed with my case. I didn't get the credit until my replacement notebook shipped. I guess I was fortunate. I did not bother asking for the 30% coupon since it wouldn't be fair. I plan to send my current dv5t when my new one arrives after Labor day.

I have a question? After reading lots of posts, I am concerned about laptop noise...If I am in class just taking notes will I have to worry about my laptop being so loud that it will disturd the professor?

    Here is my configuration.

    4G of ram
    250gb HD
    Nv 9600gt
    Intel 2.4 proc.
    Windows vista 64 bit

Will this thing get me kicked out of class?

any hp laptop over $1,000, using the 30% off coupon, is an absolute steal right now. i bought a $2,300 notebook for $1600. if that's not a steal, i dont know what is.

specs are below. try not to drool on your keyboard ;-D

I apologize if my question is silly, this will be my first laptop so I am not really sure how to gauge "loud" when it comes to lappys.

Does anyone know if the extra warranty is worth it for this laptop? Do laptops have a high failure rate that I'll need to purchase an extra 2-3 years for it? I plan to purchase a dv5t since I saw that 30% coupon so I was wondering if it be a good idea to just stick with the 1 year warranty.
