I may not be Rusch but TF2 is the only game I play too so I figure I'm a good addition to his answer. The game runs perfect at native resolution and I also use no AA. The game looks a ton better than it did on my desktop with my older graphics card at the same resolution.

thanks. What graphic drivers are y'all using?

Just wondering, Have any of you been able to find a 12cell battery for the dv5t? Any ideas if it's gonna be released?

177.89 is what I'm using but it was the first one I tried and it worked good so I just stuck with it. -
Part number is assigned, but not in stock yet. Here's the link:

Anyone know if the BIOS supports booting from the flash card slot? I'd love to have Linux on a 16GB SDHC card.
-
Does anyone know if the dv5t comes with the WAU folder installed on the hardrive? I would like to do a clean Vista install but couldn't find the WAU folder anywhere.
-
hey guys i just re-ordered the dv5t all maxed out with the t9400 cpu. previously i had a unit with the t8600...it turned out that the infinity frame had a pad sticking out (or something of that nature). Upon finding out about the new coupon which reduces the price by 30%...I opted to go for the better cpu. Is it a good choice? My only concern is the thermal difference b/w the two options. It shouldn't be too noticeable? Not unless the cpus are maxed out?
-
There is none, unfortunately. On my current dv5t i just uninstalled the bloatware. I ordered a new dv5t that gives the option of getting OS recovery disk, i don't think it will allow me for a clean install of vista, but i have high hopes it will. Was only 20$ anyway.
I got the T9400 also, but don't really feel like I need it. I'm going to downgrade to a P8600 for less heat and more battery life and less cost (reordered one, returning this one). Honestly I tried out laptops with less than 2.0 GHz and it was working the same for me, not that i ran anything highly intensive. -
I'm looking at getting this laptop and am just checking my final price but every time I put in the 30% off code NB8821 it gives me this message:
"We have compared the coupon submitted to the available instant savings and applied the best offer. Promotion rules allow only the coupon or instant savings to be applied to any item."
and then gives me a final price about $100 over what it should be.
what can I do about this?
EDIT: also, should I get the P8600 over the P8400 if I'm going to be pushing the laptop quite hard at some points? what does it take to see a difference? -
For whoever else was getting the HID data error when using your bluetooth mouse.. there are a lot of others now too. If you look up hid data in this forum, you will find the posts.
I'm thinking it has to be a dv5 series problem with microsoft bluetooth mice.. mouses. lol
This doesn't sound like much of a solution, but it worked. One person said to go to your msconfig file..then to the startup tab and uncheck hp quicklaunch.. I did it and it works great now..just seemed a little scary to me - don't know what I just did really.
Anyway HTH -
You won't see much of a difference that will be worth your $50. If you are going to be using your laptop heavily with CPU intensive apps, and don't mind extra heat and loss of battery, go with the T series CPU's.
Quick question for my girlfriends dv5t.
Randomly while she is using her notebook, the volume indicator will pop up in the middle of the screen. Is there a way to turn this completely off so it doesn't pop up?
Thank you.

why are you exchanging your dv5t? just wondering. -
Can somebody comment on how reflective the DV5T (or 7) screen is?
Also - does the 30% off NB8821 coupon work on these systems?
Thanks all - and enjoy your new toys

1 - there is a thread on this forum that compares the dv7t regular screen and the infinity screen. take a look at the pics.
2 - the nb8821 coupon works on custom machines over $1,000 . -
^^^ I'm interested in how the dv7t turns out for you. I was strongly considering a dv7 but wasn't sure if I wanted to lug around a bigger lappy than I already have to.
-
timesquaredesi MagicPeople VooDooPeople
i had one already but returned it because #1- i wanted higher specs and #2 - i used the 30% coupon! :-D
i priced out my unit at $2,279 and, after the deduction, it came to $1,595! that is dirt cheap considering a lower spec'd prebuilt dv7t is about $1,300. so for $300 more, i got something with the most insanest (yeah, i made that word up) specs. the processor bump alone, from the lowest proc they have for the dv7t to the highest proc that i got, the t9600, that alone was a $450 option! 1066mhz bus and 6 megs of cache! this thing is comparable to a desktop in performance. that's exactly what i wanted.
as for lugging around, i dont think it would be that bad. for me, this is a desktop replacement and i will be lugging it maybe 1% of the time, if that. just make sure wherever you are lugging it to has the space for a 17" wide notebook. this thing is huge. not weight wise, size wise. i dont think it would fit on a college desk and, if it did, you would not have space for anything else. l0l
for lugging around, i would have gotten a dv5t with the same exact specs - it was about $1300 or $1400 bux after the 30% off coupon. i use my laptops at night to watch movies so i wanted something with a large screen.
i installed and played unreal 3 at the highest settings on my unit and, let me tell you, the graphics were stunning. not a skip/chop/etc. everything was absolutely fluid. -
wow................... provantage really delivered fast! Factory packaged unlike newegg drives. I'll purchase from them again.
My dv5t isn't scheduled for final production until Sep 3.

It's day 3 of owning my dv5t and guess what.....I have dead pixels in the middle and far right side of my screen. It's only been THREE DAYS! I called HP and after being on hold for forever, they decided to contact a higher manager in order to come to a resolution. I refuse to send a 3 day old computer out for repair. Especially since every single time HP gets a product in their hands, they do an absolutely LAZY job in repairs by either not fixing the problem completely OR damaging the product while taking it apart and fixing it. I told them that I want my money back. So pretty much it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that they are going to try and jus build me a new computer AGAIN. All I can say is lesson learned. When I FINALLY get a computer that works from them, I plan on using it for a few years, and then buying another one from a completely different company and never dealing with HP ever again. Their customer service and products are absolutely horrible. And BTW the defective nvidia 9 series cards that are in the new dv5t series notebooks with intel processors is also scary to think about. Steer clear.
-
Well, after jreezy86's bitter comment, I thought I would opt for something a little more positive. I completely disassembled my second dv5t and between the two, put one fully functional dv5 back together. I am happy to report that when the esata port works, it is very cool. Its a little fussy, but after a clean install it seems to work most of the time. Its very fast, but even cooler, it registers a temp reading in HWmonitor. Some geeky observations; the plastic pieces that people are noticing missaligned seem to be due to poor plastic welds. My two laptops were built a few weeks apart, but the earliest one showed production dates on the plastic of early July. The later laptop had Aug. production dates and all the plastic fit better. It appears HP is aware of the earlier problems and is implementing fixes. Also interesting to note that the keyboard is already on revision B after just a few weeks. Perhaps they have fixed keyboard issues as well. For those that have noticed flex on the left side of the keyboard, I have found the cause. There are two screws on the bottom holding the keyboard, but there is a third attachment underneath that is just a post the slides into a groved slot. This locks the left side of the keyboard in place. I accidentally put the keyboard back in without engaging it properly in the slot and this caused it to bulge on the left third and flex. After removing it again and slipping that post correctly into its locking slot, everything was fine. Sorry if thats confusing. Does anyone have loose triim around the led lights on the front left edge of the laptop? I noticed this as another spot with poor plastic welds. Also, does anyone have the fan bios setting disabled so the fan only runs when it gets warm? If so, I would be curious what idle temperatures you are seeing on the nvidia 9600 GPU. Ok, more updates later. Take care all.

I hate to sound like a pain, but does anyone have any fix for this?
Randomly while my gf is using her notebook, the volume indicator will pop up in the middle of the screen. Is there a way to turn this completely off so it doesn't pop up?
It wont stop... -
Um actually it's not a bitter comment. It's speaking the truth and letting people know about a product BEFORE they end up dealing with the same issues. Hence the point of this forum....(wow). It's not coincidence nor is it endless rambling. It's educating people who otherwise do not know much about laptops or computers. It's a hassle and I'd like to save other people from going through the same thing. Taking a computer apart and rebuilding it has nothing to do with experience that people have DURING use. Most people on this forum (with the exception of a few enthusiasts) are not looking to see what the internals of their computer looks like or GPU and CPU temps and etc. They looking to simply see how the computer runs and what kind of build settings they will need in order to suite their needs and expectations PRIOR to purchase. I, as well as a few other users, have mentioned dead pixels and crooked speaker panels. A stronger graphics card is going to run hotter. That is common sense and has nothing to do with HP. The poor construction of some of the units however is laziness on HP's part during production and is unacceptable on ANY level. When you are paying $1,000 plus for ANY product, you deserve respect and proper customer service, BOTH of which HP lacks. I'm not saying Dell or Toshiba or anybody else is better than HP or vice versa. I am merely stating facts and expressing what is going on with the lap top as well. That's the point of this forum. Thanks.
-
Unfortunately no there is no setting to turn that setting off. The volume indicator usually will only stay on the screen for about 2-3 seconds unless an error occurs which rarely ever happens. No worries.
-
But how come it just randomly pops up for her? It only stops if she leaves her laptop in mute.
Also, my laptop does not show anything wen I change the volume..
-
I'm not sure what kind of processor you have but a clean install does minimal speed improvements, especially when entering the OS. But, it is a help and it doesn't hurt the computer to do a clean install. If you aren't ready to do a clean install then you can simply set your default start up programs and manually delete most of the bloatware that comes pre-installed. I will admit I did a clean install and I did like the improvement.
cheers -
jreezy86, if you don't mind can you go a few pages back and look at the 2 screenshots I posted. They list my startup programs and stuff I have installed.
Just want to know what is safe to disable from startup and what is safe to uninstall. -
Oh, you're saying it randomly pops up even when she is not pressing the volume touch pad? hmm..that is a bit fishy. You can try doing a restart after updates OR reinstalling the drivers via HP's technical website. The site actually detects your unit in order to give the correct drivers for your computer. All you have to know is whether or not you have a 32 or 64 bit OS which most people know.
As far as your laptop, you probably have to do the same. Reinstall the drivers. Of course, always make sure you have a proper system restore point PRIOR to driver installation. This should hopefully fix your problems.
cheers -
I personally don't mind that it doesn't come up for me, it was just strange that it never did. Its just weird that it is always popping up on hers.
Would you happen to know what driver it would be for her laptop? She has a dv5t with Vista 32-Bit.
What are the steps I need to take on fixing it?
Thanks man, I do appreciate all the help you are throwing my way.
-
Hey Rusch. I took a look at your programs as you requested and it looks like most of the programs that you have installed are actually what you need lol. If you are using your computer for most entertaining purpose including dvd's, cd burning, and gaming (hence it being an entertainment notebook pc) I highly suggest for you to just do a full clean install of the OS if you have not done so already. I noticed that you also have a 64 bit system which is actually a good OS despite the lack of updates. Norton is a super memory and access hog. I'm glad to see that you are using AVG. Do NOT delete your realtek drivers as this is a super pain to fix. You can delete cyber but depends if whether or not you choose Windows media or cyber to view your dvd's. It's all a matter of preference as far as the other programs go. Other than that, I mentioned for those who are not confident in doing a clean install to manually choose which programs to initiate when the OS starts. 2.0 ghz processor is actually relatively speedy believe it or not. This will help. My moto is "don't fix it if it's not broken". You have a fine system by the way
I hope I somewhat answered your problem.
cheers -
i just installed the newest nividia drivers from hp's page. they brought back the mute button led color change issue. i dunno what it is and the driver interaction, but it sucks and they need to figure it out.
system restore fixes it though. -
Thanks for the feedback man. Any info on the startup stuff?

I have the same notebook at the moment. Follow these steps for a relatively painless and hopefully conclusive fix:
If you head to HP.com you will see an option for software and driver downloads towards the bottom, left side of your screen. Proceed to click on it. Once there you will see an option for you to manually type in your computer model and name. The easier choice is to pick choice two below it and have HP automatically detect your system. Click on the start detection button. When the next screen pops up it will tell you to continue. BEFORE hitting continue, unlock pop ups for this web page. Click continue and install Active X controls when you are prompted to at the top of the next page. The web page is going to ask you if it is okay to install, click yes. Within a few short moments, a screen with the HP logo will appear and will ask you click next. The program is now allowing HP to detect your computer and give you the correct updates. If she has the dv5t with 2.0 ghz processor with 256DM video card, her computer is the 1000us model. It is the HP Quick buttons update 06-2008 6.40.6.1 F » Version: 20.14M. Give it a try buddy. Hopefully it will work out for you. Sorry for the long winded how to but it makes it easier.

Disabling lightscribe, windows sidebar (how I loathe thee), and actually speeds the computer boot up IMMENSLY if you choose to not do a clean install. Throw in an extra 30 seconds if you are using Norton......Anyway, it's literally a 6 second count when windows passes the password entry screen and when you can click on TF2 and commense blowing heads up lol. Love TF2btw. The wi-fi is excellent on these computers by the way. I have a crappy netgear router and my connection is practically complete almost as soon as windows loads up. I counted the boot time after disabling these start up programs and BEFORE I did a clean install. I know....I have no life but I figured somebody would be interested in knowing lol.

When I first received my dv5t, I had a few problems with the sound, etc.
I was getting the clicking geiger counter sound and the pop-up volume
indicator was super annoying. I called HP tech support and they had me
uninstall and then reinstall the latest Quick Touch driver pack. They also
had me delete the pop-up volume window. Everything has been perfect, since.
I wish I could tell you exactly how I deleted the volume window, but I just
can't remember. If you call HP, I'm sure they can instruct you on how to
perform the task.

Why keep muvee autoProducer, My HP Games, and Viewpoint Media Player?

This is actualy almost the same identical set up the I have currently right now and will be running on my replacement....(ugh).Minus crysis obviously because this notebook I have was not designed primarily for high end gaming. I agree with you totally. This is a good set up.
cheers -
I know I am cheesy but I actually kept the HP Games because despite the entertainment factor, Microsoft is actually in the process of trying to link many mainstream xbox games through the My HP Games set up....I know...it's probably only wishful thinking on my part. However, I figured I would personally keep it. You never know lol.

There is a later 7/17 Quick Touch driver pack, which is the one HP
had me install. It worked great - no audio/touch control problems
whatsoever.

I'm jealous of the free upgrade to 3GB ram now also. I tried to play Gears of War and i had a ton of other things open and it gave me the low on ram warning. 3GB would have been perfect for me. -
I didnt realise you were the spokesperson for the majority of users on this forum. I suspect you are probably never happy with the products you buy and if you hate HP so much, I am not sure why you are here. No electronic product is ever perfect and with 3 month life cycles, its hard to ramp up production and have perfect product rolling off the line on a completely new design. Anyway, it was my understanding from the number of private messages I received that there were a significant number of people who wanted to see and know more about the inside of their dv5t's. Since you have indicated that I am in error on this, I will no longer post this information. I am sure people would much rather listen to you ***** and complain all the time. Take care all
