Recieved a shipping update earlier today, and I should be getting my dv5t on Thursday. Pretty fast shipping considering it's coming from China.

Just finished my clean install using the guide at the top of this forum:

Working great! -
Alright I'm like two hours away from ordering a Dv5t but is the general consensus to get the 32 or 64 bit version of home premium? I'm gonna get the 2.4 Ghz proc, 9600 GT, and 3 gigs of ram that I will upgrade later IF i get the 64 bit. But which version should I get? Thanks guys
-
64-bit definatly its free isnt it. And if you upgrade your ram to 4GB then your all good to go unlike if you get the 32Bit youll only be able to use about 3 GB of ram.

I ran 3DMark06 and got about 3900 at stock clocks (haven't checked what they are). Using 177.72 drivers from LaptopVideo2Go.
The notebook gets warm on the left side; the right side remains lukewarm. I wouldn't want to put this notebook on my lap. I don't think the heat is anywhere near dangerous though . . . my Sager runs warmer than this and it has been living for almost three years. A nice plus is that the fan is very quiet, almost silent at idle and audible when running benchmarks, but not loud.
I really like the keyboard on this notebook, and the WSXGA+ Infinity screen is magnificent. Very clear and crisp, and the contrast is excellent.

anyone else got a 32 vs 64 bit input? right now its at 1 and 1 haha. Thanks for the input though but I don't have to worry about an ipod touch

OK here are temps after one hour of game play.
CPU 76 degrees celsius
GPU 90 degrees celsius

That reminds me, I need to put the specs of this thing in my signature so people know what I'm talking about, lol.

wow, that guide does not look like its very fun to follow >.< i think i might just some hand picking and uninstalling stuff even though it'll leave some of its crap behind...
-
thanks for your input... I will probably try a clean install this weekend. What program that is currently installed do you think is causing the problem with the bluetooth mouse? -
Is the De-Crappifier program or something resembling it useable with the dv5t and a viable option for clearing out bloatware without actually going through with a full clean install??
-
Great... I ordered my dv4t with T9600. I'm wondering how hot it will be, compared to your dv5ts with the P series CPUs, since the TDP of T9600 is 35W while that of any of the P series CPUs is 25W.
-
I'm gonna put a newer, faster hard drive in it as soon as it comes back and then do a clean instal. I already have Vista Ultimate 64 bit so thats what I'm going to put on it as apposed to Home Premium.
-
Hey guys could someone post a review on this laptop? Like what ken of gentech pc is doing here? I would also love to see this thing in action and i guess putting up a review is really helpful for those who are interested or has this laptop =)
-
any1 know what speed of memory HP puts in there. it'd be nice if it was 800mhz...but knowing HP, is it 667mhz?
(or have they invented their own ram and are already running 1066mhz?!? /sarcasm) -
-
MCAP, why did the GPU suddenly increase in temperature? Isn't 90C high for a GPU under load? I know 100C is where it starts getting dangerous...
-
Uh, can we get a re-look at those GPU temperatures?
-

I was thinking of sending back the dv9700t I just bought and getting this one. Probably a good idea right? I especially want to since I didn't realize how much a 17 inch weighs and how big it is.
When you say warm...how warm? It gets warm where you rest your wrist? I'd be playing a lot of games on it.
Is the screen something I could upgrade at a later time? I'm not sure I want to spend the extra money for a higher resolution.
Is there a big difference between infinity and normal?
Any idea when I'll be able to use the bigger coupons on this?
I take it the 160 gb 7200 rpm is better than 250 gb 5400 rpm? How much better?
*edit*
Also a few more questions:
How hard is it to upgrade a hard drive? I was thinking of getting the free 250 gb now and upgrading a year or so from now.
This computer with a 512 graphics card is much better for gaming than the dv9700t with a 512 graphics card right? Or is the difference only slight?
With the processor, what's the difference between a "3MB internal L2 memory cache" and a "6MB internal L2 memory cache." I'm trying to decide if I would get the 2.4 or the 2.53 ghz for 100 bucks more.
Also I'm having trouble distinguishing the differences between the "Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)" and the "802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth."
Thanks. -

The Clean Install guide may look intimidating, but it's really not. You just have to read it once or twice. Just make a post in the guide if you need help. We'll get you through it.

I just hit a new high!! 93 degrees celsius on the GPU and 80 degrees celsius on the CPU. This is insane. I play Call of Duty 4 for 30 minutes and I stopped cause i didnt want it to go any higher. And i use HWmonitor for the temps.
-
Hrmm...so maybe with these heat issues I'm better off not trading in my dv9700t for this one.
-
Does currently have the switching between dedicated/integrated graphics capability?
-
Are those temps correct? What are you doing to it, MCAP?
Can anyone else confirm these outrageous temps? -
Just did the 3dMark06 tests. My score was 3986 at resolution 1280x1024. pretty pathetic if you ask me. Should I take advantage of my 21 DAY RETURN POLICY????
and here are temp pic its blurry
and that was taken right before i hit 95 degrees celcius.
AM I THE ONLY ONE??? IF I PLAYED ANY LONGER I WOULD PROBABLY HIT 100 DEGREES CELSIUS!!!
EDIT****** Temperatures were taken during COD4 GAMEPLAY about 30 minutesLast edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -
What resolution was that run at? Does anyone else have more temps? I ordered a DV5T and this makes me worry....
-
Because I don't know anything about computers, I can't say anything for sure. Those temperatures don't look good, but is the score bad?
-
If I recall correctly, that is a lower score than the XPS m1530 scores with the 8600M GT. Is the 9600 DDR2?
I did'nt know it would make such a difference. I thought the 9600 would be much faster... -
COuld someone else with roughly the same setup runs some benchmarks to find the temperatures please? I'm about to order one with the 9600GT but now I dont want to if it could boil water in my lap! thanks
-
I'm new to this forum and want to say HI to everybody. I'm planning to buy a DV5t but have to wait until it is in Europe. Too bad the price won't be as good as the one in the US
Anyway, I wanted to ask, if it is possible to install XP on this notebook??? Or isn't it worth the trouble and stay with Vista?
As to the specs after reading the topic I have got some question left:
1 - Is it worth taking the 7200RPM hard drive?
2 - If I don't work in Photoshop or Autocad and any other stuff like that, is it worth taking the 1680x1050 screen?
Waiting for Chaz's review -
wtf? 90+ celcius?
This better be your DV5t that is doing this, only.
Try using a different temperature reader. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
1. Yes, the hard drive is the slowest component in the computer and therefore any increase in speed will be ntoiceable.
2. I think so, because you can see more with the higher-res screen and get more done. There is also less scrolling.
Edit: Regarding the temperatures . . . I'm sitting at 49*C idle right now, though the clocks are reading 169MHz core: 100MHz memory. That can't be right. I am going to try a different program (using GPU-Z 0.2.6).
Edit2: Okay, I suppose the temperatures and clocks were correct, because RivaTuner is displaying the same thing. I noticed as soon as I started up 3DMark06 that the clocks went back up to 500MHz core: 400MHz memory, so they must have been in a power saving mode. -
those clock speeds do make sense as the system downclocks itself (both the cpu and memory now in the latest incarnations) when not under load.
-
Chaz if you could give us some temps during a game or under some sort of load on your end that would go a long way to helping us find out if there truly is a temp problem with the dv5t.
I am worried that maybe I made the wrong choice, since I planned on playing a lot of games on the dv5t (including COD4 which gives very high temps to a previous poster!). -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I did a run of 3DMark06 and the temps topped out at 86*C, which is not dangerous but warmer than I'd like to see.
Later when I install games, I will let you know if there are any problems. The GPU is not downclocking so performance is not being affected. -
i know that most of us have or wanted do have the 9600GT card, but it could be interesting to compare the temperatures between x4500, 9200gs and 9600gt too
-
Just got my dv5t this morning, couldn't really play around with it much though because I had to go to work.
Everything about it looked nice BUT
when I booted up the notebook for the first time (not using battery, only AC adapter), it took me to a black screen with white text that said:
"CMOS Checksum Error"
"F1 to load defaults"
"F10 BIOS"
Anyone see this after turning their notebooks on? I really hope I didn't get a lemon. After I pressed F1, the notebook loaded the Vista OS; now it's just sitting on my dining room table. I still need to take a look at it when I get home. :/ -

Alright, I've finished my preliminary analysis of the GPU temperatures.
I used ATI Tool 0.26 to stress the GPU using the artifact finder; after about 15 - 17 minutes, the temperature was up at 91*C maximum. It did not go any higher. This is hotter than a notebook should get. GPUs can sustain much higher temperatures than other components, so there isn't a real danger at those temperatures, but it's hotter than the GPU should be getting as I said.
Now for the fix. If you look at the way the heat is expelled from the dv5t, you'll see that it is deflected downwards at the surface the notebook is resting on. This means the heat isn't being pushed away as fast as it can. To test this theory, I raised the back of my notebook up one half-inch and the temperatures dropped ten degrees. See the attached screenshot. This was all done during the same test run.
81*C is more than an acceptable temperature.
After over a half-hour of stress testing, the dv5t gets warm but not hot in my definition. When gaming, you should raise the back of the notebook up a bit to keep it cool. Even a half-inch is enough.
I hope this helps.Attached Files:

I am about to place my order but have a quick resolution question. If i go with the wxsga+ 1680 resolutuion can i also use the standard 1280x800 if that is to high for me? and all the resolutions between? What i mean is if i get the 1680 and change the setting to 1280 will it be the same quality as if it was just a 1280?
-
I was worried about the heat being expelled from the bottom. I wonder why laptop manufacturers don't make a more concerted effort to push the air out the back. Perhaps a notebook cooler would be in order for extended gaming then I guess?
Chaz, thank you very much for your thorough and speedy responses. -
-
What other resolutions are available?
Appreciate the help.
Thanks. -
Well my laptop wasn't scheduled to ship until the 4th but low and behold it showed up today
-
^MCAP, can you try Chaz's suggestion about helping the airflow by raising the laptop a little bit to see if it similarly reduces your max GPU temp as well? Thanks.
