I was just wondering... I have 2 gb of ram in my dv5t and i notice that the graphics when i play team fortress 2 and cs:s are a bit fuzzy and choppy. Does the amount of ram i have affect the video quality or is it all about the gpu?

I am also thinking of returning my laptop because of other issues such as overall lag when loading up applications and general surfing through the internet. I mentioned earlier that i got a blue screen when i downloaded the Crucial System Scanner tool from the crucial website and tried using it. The lag that i mentioned might be because I am running 64-bit with 2gb of ram or a defective GPU.

Ever since i got that blue screen it feels like my laptop has been running slower than when i first got it.

Also, was i supposed to update any drivers such as the gpu and motherboard right when i got this laptop?

If someone could clarify on my questions it would be greatly appreciated.

    my config:

    windows vista home premium 64-bit
    intel p8600 (2.4 ghz core 2 duo)
    250 gb hdd
    2gb ram
    geforce 9600m GT

you can either open up the hard drive panel take out the hard drive and look at it or go to device manager and double click on disk or something like that. can't remember at the moment.

You should use 'Acronis True image' to clone the original drive to the new drive. This is the cleanest/simplist way to upgrade the HD.

Are you playing on high settings? I'm running Crysis on medium and it runs fine. I do have 4Gigs of RAM and the P8400 CPU with the 9600 GPU.

Yes i am playing on high settings but i can only average around 30-40 fps on team fortress 2. Shouldn't i be able to get more than that? Unless the 2gb of ram is the reason why it feels so choppy.

during game play, minimize the game and look at task manager to see ram utilization.

i remember that on my dv7t, as i played unreal 3 on the highest settings, ram utilization was at over 2 gigs. that's with unreal 3 though, on the highest settings....

that is a quick way to find out if the ram has something to do with it. alternatively, lower the game settings to medium and see if the same problem occurs.

    Because this:

thread says using hardrive diagnostic tools and utilities is something you should do when you get a new computer, and I need to know the manufacturer to know what to download.

I just called them re the new 3 GB promotion. In my case I ordered the computer with the free upgrade to 2GB and they will credit the CC back $50. Just give a call and be nice. I'm sure they get a lot of these go-back calls. My call took a total of less than 5 minutes.

for me, i'd run hwmonitor right after starting up my laptop.

then play a game for a half hour - hour, open up various docs, surf, burn a cd/dvd, etc. then i'd look at hwmonitor and compare it to the initial readings i had when i turned my laptop on.

that's just if you want to see your actual peak tempratures while doing things you may normally do.

if you plan on running a scientific test - ie - the temp of your proc/hd/gpu under high stress conditions, i would download another piece of software that will draw a ton of cpu utilization/gpu processing/disk writing/accessing.

there are tons of apps like this available online.

what matters is if that person was in the US or not. that makes a world of difference!

believe it or not, customers want representatives that speak (and understand) english.... i wish HP knew this OBSCURE FACT (apparently.)

i always get US reps when i call between 9 and 5 EST, and people from other areas during the 'off hours'

maybe im being too harsh - they're not SOO bad. there i said it.

during game play on team fortress 2 the ram utilization gets to around 80-90%. does this indicate that I need more ram for smoother performance or is there something else?

Scratch that - it didn't work... it took away the annoying error, but it made all touch buttons besides volume not work.. hp quick launch buttons shouldn't be disabled, I guess :) I DID think it was too weird of a fix.

You can use HWMonitor as noted; alternatively you can run HDTune and get the number of the hard drive. Just put that in Google and you can find out.
    http://www.hdtune.com/
They should - you have price protection within 21 days of delivery date per the Terms & Conditions of HP's website:
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...mpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/split/termsofsale

Don't worry about the multiple posts - they are due to some backup/maintenance jobs running on the NBR Forums server. Things should be getting better since we took the forums completely offline for a couple of hours to service the database two days ago.

How is the battery life with the 9600? I saw someone over at hard with this lappy and I REALLY want one now. The 30% off deal is too good to be true. Does the 100 dollar discount go away when you use the 30% off? How long is the 30% deal good for? And does anyone have pictures of the infinity screen vs regular?

I may have to take them up on that. I was just getting ready to order some ram from newegg and $50 would help relieve the price of that. I thought 2 GB would be sufficient but with me pushing the computer harder than I didn't my previous one and being on Vista I need just a little bit more than 2GB and have some breathing room.

the 30% coupon has been available for almost a week and it probably won't be soon. once you apply the coupon you lose the 100 dollar rebate. still worth it though!!!

Battery life with the 9600M GT GPU is about 2.5 hours on average. Yes, the 30% is true and I would you take advantage of it. Not sure how much longer it will be around. Having said that, HP will most likely have another large discount coupon in the near future. The deal for this one was $400. I believe the $100 cannot be stacked with the 30% coupon.

    Here is the display comparison:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=292740

    Best of luck to you.

No, I haven't tried that yet. I probably will be getting a cooler though and try to undervolt it (I'm a computer noob so hopefully I'm successful). I haven't done any gaming yet and if the palm rest is bothering me now I'm sure it will be so warm as to be a big annoyance while gaming. Can anyone who has a cooler comment if the palm rest still gets warm while gaming using a cooler?

    30% coupon expires 9/1.

HP seems to be rotating coupons right now. It's likely they'll have something equivalent this next week and the week after................ and the week after. ;)

Anyone know why my RAM usage is so high? Normally without running nothing more than firefox, i will be at 1.65~ average. Things that i have in the background range from AIM, MSN, windows sidebar, Avira AV, and others. When i calculated all my processes in my task manager process tab, it was less than 300MB. Isn't vista only supposed to take around 800? and where can i see the full list of processes?

vista is a memory hore, xp pro with 2gb ram runs faster than vista with 4gb.
and the fact that vista basic runs faster than home premium & ultimate versions just make u shake ur heads.
u can see processes from ctrl+alt+delete. task manager.

From what I've been reading from other posters, it will get quite hot when gaming, but lifting the back of it will improve air flow. Take a look at the link on the first page of this thread that talks about the laptop temp. Good luck with your dv5t, I can't wait to get mine.

anyone know whats wrong with my display driver?

while playing requiem, it failed and i got this message: Display driver has failed and has been recovered successfully.

But after the message came up the screen got all messed up and there were spots everywhere that appeared and moved around.

I've been using my laptop for a week now. Everything is great until now. This keyboard is awesome, feels really good while typing. And a surprise with the sticky touchpad, it is not sticky anymore!! I'm not sure if anyone else has posted it this week (didn't have the time to read this weeks messages) but HP has probably done something with the coating and it really does not stick. It definitely did with the previous dv5z I sent back.

And about the temperature, this baby is cool (not hot) while regular usage, can easily lap it.

There are a lot of things you can do to streamline your system. I did a
thorough clean-out with Revo, plus a few other things. I only kept what
I absolutely needed. My dv5t currently idles at 750MB RAM, which is
pretty decent. I'd like to get it down to less than 700MB, if possible.
