I use mine on my lap sometimes, but I only have the x4500 integrated. When I use my laptop on my bed, I have an old Dell computer stand that came with a Latitude years ago that I use.

This might sound goofy, but when I use it on my lap, I use a lap desk.. it has pillow-like softness on the bottom and a thick hard top with a ridge at the front on top so your book (or laptop in this case) stays put.. It's just like using a table on your lap..but with a soft underneath.

I'm sure you guys know this, but if you hook your laptop up via hdmi to your hdtv...it is WAY cool.. I play Sherwood Dungeon this way (you gamers, stop laughing).. and I watch Netflix watch instantly.

*I know this is a tech forum, but can someone as least just give me a courtesy laugh on my goat avatar? LOL*

So if I plug an HDMI cable from my laptop to my TV, I will have everything good quality? How would PC games look and play?

even thru vga cable, the picture isnt so bad. i watch all my dvd's from my computer, connected to my tv via vga cable.

    LOL :) uhh thx
Well, I'm sure it depends on the hdtv too..but I like to even browse the web with my hdtv..it's like a huge 42" monitor. I notice that the colors are so much more vivid and beautiful than my laptop screen..should this be so?

    Hi - Nice Avatar :D

I guess the reason I'm really asking is if I really need to invest in a notebook cooler, although it'll seem like its way bulky if I have all this stuff

does anyone's notebook have kind of an uneven surface. when i gently hit the right side of my laptop, where the figerprint reader is, the laptop will have a knocking sound on the table. is this normal. should i just kind of weigh that side down with books or someting

I am still doing my research, and wanted to ask you who are dv5t owners what your opinion is. IF, you had it to do over again, would you still buy the dv5t OR would you get something else instead? I have read great reviews, but it sounds like a lot of people are experiencing problems.

Thanks for your input on this.

Yah, it did expire. They won't give credit since it just expired. And they wouldn't give credit for the 50 dollar ram upgrade that is now free.

for those of you asking about the HDMI connection...I connect the HDMI to my Onkyo 705 receiver to get 5.1 surround as well as a gorgeous 1080p picture on my samsung 550 plasma. it looks incredible with games, only prob i had was with the updated driver. i reverted back to the old one due to the picture not filling the screen while playing Bioshock, the original driver works great...so i see no point in changing it at the moment. Both the surround sound and display on my 50" plasma work perfectly.

Still unanswered, you keep saying you have less than 1gb idle but how. Where am i supposed to check all my processes, when i calculate my processes i come up with half of what my actual ram usage is. Am i calculating wrong or what? It seems like it, so where are a full list of all my processes?

I have done half of the bloatware removal using the list (above) of programs to keep.

I removed "HP Total Care Advisor" and "HP Customer Experience Enhancements", because it is not shown above, but then saw other users have kept these programs. Not sure if this is the start to my problem below...

After going through 1/4 removal of the programs, I can not find certain important programs listed in my Revo Uninstaller. The programs that are not showing are the following:

    - HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology 6.0.1.6200 (I have bluetooth included in my laptop)
    - HP Photosmart Essentail 2.5
    - HP QuickTouch 1.00 D2
    - Intel Matrix Storage Manager
    - Juniper Networks Setup Client
    - Juniper Networks Setup Client Activex Control
    - Juniper Terminal Services CLient
    - Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
    - Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB929729)
    - ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - PunkBuster Services
    - Synaptics Pointing Device Driver

I do not know if these programs were installed prior to using Revo Uninstaller, but I am now confused and do not know if I need to do a Full Recovery.

    Any help is welcome!

How/Where should I look at the program list -- do I also need to use CCleaner?

Also, are "HP Total Care Advisor" and "HP Customer Experience Enhancements" important? Will I need to re-install these? It was a long process to delete on Revo Uninstaller, as there were thousands of files that I had to manually select for deletion.

These uninstall posts beg the question: Is there a database of installed programs delivered with these laptops? Seems like this would be a very useful thing to have available for the troops. :p

Used the CCleaner and saw that some of the programs are still there... phew.

There are still 5 programs missing:

    - Juniper Networks Setup Client
    - Juniper Networks Setup Client Activex Control
    - Juniper Terminal Services CLient
    - Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
    - Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB929729)

    Are these programs important?

    Thanks again!

You know this for a fact right? I know that the laptop takes ddr2 800. But a lot of laptops take it and will downgrade the speed to ddr2 667. So if thats the case I was going to buy a ddr2 667 with tighter timings. But you guys are sure that the laptop wont run the ddr2 800 at 667?

I'm pretty positive its DDR2 800 because that is one of the new features of the Centrino 2 platform that the dv5t is based on. The old cap was at DDR2 667 and that meant anything above was just downgraded. The dv5t will however make use of DDR2 800.

Tomorrow I may call about getting $50 for the ram upgrade. The price of this laptop is already so good but that extra 50 back would make it even better.

Anybody out there know for a FACT whether or not the laptop will not only accept the ddr2 800 but run it at that specified speed and not downgrade to ddr2 667?

    Power cord "right angle adapter":

May i ask if anyone knows where to find a "right angle adapter" for use with the dv5t's round power cord plug? I am talking about the round plug that goes into the dv5t's right side when you are using it on A/C or recharging: it sticks out like 2" to 3" !! if we can find just a simple right angle adapter, then it wouldn't be as bad.

I'd much rather find an adapter than try to buy that NewEgg laptop transformer "kit" where it has like 10 different plugs for all different sorts of laptops - it is around $35 to $45 and i don't really need it, yet, almost every plug/adapter is right angled. Smartly designed.

An adapter, if we can find it, should only cost maybe $3 to $5.

Wow I'm so happy I checked the forums. I heard that the 3GB upgrade is now free. I called 1-888-999-4747 > Option 2 > Option 4. Told the lady on the phone that I paid $50 to upgrade to 3GB of RAM even when I used the 30% off coupon. She still credited me the 50 bucks! So I got this configuration for a steal! $1063.29 after tax, coupon, and $50 credit!

HP Pavilion Entertainment dv5t customizable Notebook PC
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)
    - 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
    - FREE Upgrade 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
    - No Modem
    - LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0

If you ordered before this 3GB thing, make the call. It's worth it. Mine should be here tomorrow just in time for school ;)

When I try to uninstall something in revo uninstaller it gives me four uninstall options: built-in, safe, moderate, and advanced. Are there risks to moderate and advanced? As a computer noob is clicking the "safe" option my best bet, or is the only difference between the modes the amount of time it takes?

    Thanks!

    LOL
Indian Customer Service is not that bad.
I ordered my dv5t with free 2GB ram and called for credit with the new free 3GB ram.
The indian lady gave me $80 credit instead of normal $50 one.
$80 is already a 4GB ram price including tax and shipping. So nice.

Not trying to beat a dead horse or anything, but right now I'm sitting in bed with my dv5t in my lap on top of the comforter

I'm just surfing the web and catching up on email, which is all I would really do anyway

    My temps are

30-31 degrees C for the CPUs
37 degrees C for the GPU
42 degrees C for the HDD

I have another one showing TZ01, not sure what that is at 40 degrees C

Should I still worry about getting a cooler for my lap?

Pretty low for being on top of a comforter. Currently just surfing the web i'm at 43C ~ for CPU, 50C for GPU, and 45C for HDD. I have the back of my laptop raised and its on a wood desk. I have a T9400 2.53 GHz processor and 9600 GT GPU. Yours is pretty low compared to mine.

The diff that it makes is not the price but rather the timings on the ram. If the computer uses 667 than I can get 4-4-4 timings. But if it uses the ram at 800 then the timings will be 5-5-5. Ya get it now?

Thanks to those who replied to my earlier post (Chaz / Auntymegz / etc). I actually decided to return my dv5t due to the described keyboard issues (misaligned / clicky shift key and spacebar) - checked against a few Best Buy models and was definitely a defect. Was debating exchanging but figured I'll wait until I see what the 8530p pricing looks like / potentially the new Dell XPS models before pulling the trigger. Thanks again for all the help - really liked the laptop so may end up reordering another (hopefully problem-free) dv5t again.

I, for one, love mine and have zero problems. So, I can whole heatedly recommend this laptop and would still buy it again myself.
