Hi there. :) I recently ordered a Dv5t for use as a desktop replacement. I'm a college student and don't really have time for gaming. I used to play UT, but since that's a game from 1999 I'm sure even my configuration with integrated X4500 graphics will play that just fine. My question is on that, though - the GPU. I decided to go integrated because mobility was my top concern. I would have spent the extra $200 for the 9600M GT, but my thinking was I wouldn't need it. And I figured the 9600 would consume considerably more power than the integrated unit, even at low-task, so the X4500 seemed to be my wisest choice all considering. Does that sound like a logical line of thinking? I know my system is bottlenecked by the video card, but if I'm not gaming or using advanced image rendering software, will I even notice any difference regardless? I know the X4500 is garbage in comparision to the dedicated cards, but for my use ( non-gaming), was it wise to save the money and stick with the integrated and the lower power consumption? Thanks in advance!

@ t_darc, logical thinking! The X4500 is a bit less powerful than a GeForce 9200M GS, so don't be so worried, you did the right thing considering your priorities :)

Congrats for the laptop! what about the rest of specs?

    ==============================
t_darc: interesting that you're going through the same train of thought as i did just merely a couple of weeks ago. like you, i'm not a gamer...well, maybe once in a while on my desktop.

my goal was to keep the temperature down (in my opinion, the Achilles Heel of the dv5t) and battery life up (a shortfall of the dv5t, sort of in the bottom quartile of most similar 15.4" laptops). with those two "cons" of this model, i thought that for my own needs, it would make sense to go for a "P" processor (still 45 nanometers but 25 watts) and not a "T" processor, and also the on-board/non-discrete graphics solution.

i've used mine for around 2 weeks now.

if you want more of my feedback on how mine's doing, etc, private message me please.

I just did a nice cleaner install of Vista (using vlite) and I'm down do about 800MB of RAM usage. I also notice that when on battery power, the laptop runs considerably cooler. I'm wondering what else goes into this laptops "power saver" mode, because if it's slowing down the graphics to keep it cool, I could just turn it way down until I need it. Can anyone tell me the power saver mode settings (other than the screen being dim)?

Battery lasted a little over 2.5 hours as well, with 15% left.

Uggh...if even after a clean install the OS is still chewing up 40 percent of the physical ram, 2 GB isn't nearly even enough to do the most mundane things. I guess I'd better start thinking about going up to 3 GB(even though I'm 32bit)

you guys think using the classic theme over the aero theme may benefit battery life? i know aero goes into basic setting on power saving mode but still. any input?

btw how much battery life are you guys getting out of the standard battery?

Well yes, it takes the lowest number, not the average of subscores. So, the GPU is at 3.5, which is the lowest, the WEI will be 3.5. My subscores are all above 5 except my GPU which is 9600 GT, which is exactly at 5.0, which means my WEI is 5.0, probably the highest the laptop can attain.

my previous note book dv6000 with no NVIDIA card had a base score of 3.1 LOL! with 1.83 GHz and 80GB with 2 GB RAM

SO whats the deal y such a base score with NVIDIA 9200GS? I use computer but am an illiterate about the techno!

One thing i felt is the mouse buttons i mean the touch pad button are too stiff?? like create a "click" when pressed

And how did u get it in $ 957? i used the 30% coupon but still paid 1200! but may be i have a blue ray and a 6cell high capacity?

What about the NVIDIA sticker? can i get in market? HP reimbursed me $10 for the sticker i hope i can buy one in the market!

Higher resolution will allow more space to see things, so less scrolling is required. Unless your eyesight is really bad and you require things to be bigger, WSXGA+ is better. I know because i currently have a WXGA and compared to another computer, the viewing space is just too small for me.

For the Nvidia sticker, i don't have one on my current one, i'll see if my new one arrives with it. I will also call them if mine doesn't have any, hey 10$ is 10$.

LOL@ $10 is $10 yeah make sure you dont tell my name and your call doesnt go to Philipines LOL or else HP will eb bankrupt on just not putting NVIDIA stickers!

Does low base score tell the the laptop isnt ok? its 3.5 should have eben above 4 atleast with a NVIDIA 9200GS my DV6000 was better in that regard with 3.1!

Interesting to see if the performance could get anywhere near notebooks with the DDR3 version of the 9600M GT. :D

Ok, so now I'm done with my 2-year-old Vaio FE. I'll never buy a Vaio again. Last week I ordered my dv5t (should've bought a Gateway FX but my budget didn't allow me to). The thing is at the time I placed my order, there was still an upgrade option to the 7200rpm drives, so I upgraded to the 160gig 7k2 drive for $50. But now they've pulled that off the website, and my laptop is expected to be completed by September 8th. Do you guys think HP would assemble my dv5t as the order indicates or they would just snap a 5k4 drive in there? And if they do, what should I do? (Sorry for this silly question, but I had some BAD experience dealing with those manufacturers' customer service).
    Thanks in advance.

Games of course. :p I'm wondering whether getting a Zalman cooler will allow me to OC my dv5t to get a decent performance gain in games.

    Since I don't have my dv5t yet I can't try myself :(.

BTW: Did anyone try any custom driver for the GPU? Is it worth to try?

It doesn't make a difference, especially for games. The 2.0GHz is fine.
Owners of dv5ts with integrated graphics report the notebook runs exceptionally cool and quiet. Battery life with the high-capacity battery is easily over three hours. The X4500 sounds like it was the best choice for you.
    1. As one poster noted, the WEI is based on the lowest score. WEI is an almost-useless benchmark since scores can vary so much depending on drivers, etc that it isn't reliable.
Sounds like a good price to me.

I'm running pretty much the same setup as you. It's a great config, you'll really enjoy it.

FedEx cutoff means the package was received after FedEx does anymore shipments and whatnot on that day.

Just got my new dv5t (second one)

Same specs, except went for the updated screen and I'm loving it. I would really recommend the 1600x1050 unless you have really bad eyes...

I'm burning my recover disks now and plan on doing a clean start next week once work dies down

Hey all...I just wanted to make sure this is normal, so I'm posting.

I'm not computer expert, but my display seems to flex a lot. It seems real flimsy. I can push down a lot when the screen is down, and when it's up i can push in a lot too from the back, and there are two ripple spots in the middle upper right and middle upper left when I push in. Is this normal?

In Chaz's review, he wrote: "The display flexes an average amount - it is not the stiffest display I have seen, but definitely not the weakest. The back of the display could use a bit more protection; by pushing in on the back, you can see minor ripples in the screen."

I have no clue what "average amount means" since I'm no computer expert, but I just wanted to make sure my comp isn't defected or anything...

    Thanks!

I've had my dv5t now for about 1 1/2 weeks and must say I love it. 1680x1050 XWGA+ is simply gorgeous and the BluRay/DVD Combo drive is superb (Just bought Transformers BluRay @ walmart for $25 plus there's a $10 MIR if you already own the DVD which I do). The 9600M GT works great and I did get the 6-Cell extended life battery. When HP releases a higher capacity battery (Suspect a 9-Cell) I'll probably get one. The Bios come pre-configured to have Fan On Constantly ENABLED and Virtualization DISABLED. If you use VMWARE or Virtual PC I recommend changing the last one and to increase battery life a little change the first one. So far the only problem I have with the laptop is I cann't get my Intel 5100 A/G/N card to connect to my Linksys WRT150N 802.11N router faster then 54Mbit.

I called up HP after noticing the FREE 3GB upgrade (mine has 2GB) and was told I could either get a replacement built or they would refund me $100...I took the $100!!! I recieved my 4GB of OCZ ram yesterday so I'm now running 4GB. Just an FYI, I noticed the specs for the laptop says it supports upto 8GB!!! Too bad 4GBx2 DDR2 SoDimms cost about $1000!

Call back and talk to another rep (which you most likely will). When they say about building a replacment, just tell them something to the effect that you really don't want to be without a laptop and you don't have the money to cover the cost of the replacement etc, etc....make it sound convincing... :)

A question to those that have generated the recovery discs via the HP recovery manager: How many disks did it create and if just one disc, what is the size?

Mine only created ONE disc that was just under 500mb in size. Real recovery discs should have been at least 2-3 gigs to cover a full vista install and the stock HP drivers/bloatware. I'm thinking of callling HP and making an issue of this and demand they send me recovery discs at no charge. THis business of latop sellers not sending people discs is uncalled for and has been going on for years now with little consideration to the user. I can deal with creating my own discs but when I feel I have been cheated in that regard as well, I get a bit annoyed. Recently, I've noticed that most of the these recovery managers only allow you to create one set of discs! gimme a friggin break.

    Hello everyone
Me and my roomate both have the DV-5t with 32-bit Vista...Since the 32-bit detects only 3gb of ram, we ordered only 4gb from newegg(2x2gb)..I was wondering whether we can use one of the 2gb modules from newegg and one 1gb module that came with the laptop? Will these two work together or will there be a problem with this setup?
    Thank you.

Oh no! I would still call HP and see if the return center can get it for you. I'm sure it happens more often than you think. I have to remind myself to remove my 4GB RAM when I return this notebook.

After reading your post I thought.. "hey, it's worth a shot".. no go - he said there would be no way to track it down..

Would anyone like to come to the Memorial Service? It's tonight - come dressed as an Incredible..

So I just got mine computer and everything is fine and all but the media buttons, specifically, the volume control goes haywire every time I try to use it. Like when I attempt to use it, the volume control jumps up and down and you can hear that distinct sound for when you touch one of the media buttons. Anyone know how to solve this?
