Go to the HP website, download the latest(dated 7/17) Quick Touch
driver pack and install. I had a problem with the volume control making
geiger counter, clicking noises and the new drivers worked great.

You can and should call now for the $50 credit ( maybe more depends on your luck). However, it would not be credited back on your credit card account until 3-5 business days after delivery.

Does anyone know where these ship from? My order got delayed so it's now shipping out on 9/8 (it was supposed to ship 9/4). I'm going to be out of town the week of 9/15 and it'd be nice to receive it before then. I'm in southern California BTW.

    OMG, delayed? Any reason?
I am in So Cal too and it is supposed to be shipped today (9/5). I need it so bad that I don't want any delay as my laptop is totally broken.

Looks like a great configuration, that is basically what I have. As one poster noted, you're going to like it a lot. :) I am very happy with my laptop.
Hi Captain - if you go to Best Buy or some other store, check out some of the notebooks on display and flex their screens. Some Toshibas have considerably more flexible screens than the dv5t, mainly the $500 ones and older A205 series.
The HP dv5 is a consumer-grade notebook and its screen/chassis is not as reinforced as that of a business notebook's. The dv5t is about average for its class, nothing to worry about really.
If you carry the notebook around with you, make sure anything isn't hitting the back of the display because that can cause damage.
That stuff I'm not too sure about, so go over to our Buy/Sell/Trade forum and make a post about it. Also read this article:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=41756
The router problem might be a mismatch of the N standard . . . N hasn't been officially approved yet, so everything is "Pre-N". Perhaps there is a firmware update for the router . . . check Linksys' site. If that doesn't work, then check out our Networking & Wireless forum.

Good job on getting the discount. Make sure you run Memtest86+ to test out that RAM for any errors.

That 8GB support might make an interesting upgrade possibility in the future. :) Too expensive right now for sure.
Speaking of RAM upgrades, I am using the 2GB free upgrade I got from HP with no issues . . . so no reason for me to upgrade yet. Heh . . . free 2GB . . . I remember two years ago I paid $110 per stick for OCZ 1GB DDR2-533 modules for my old Sager. That's $220 for a 2GB upgrade. Things really changed since the last time I bought a laptop.

The only reason noted in the email is "Due to product constraints of one or more components in your custom PC,
we will be unable to ship your order on the original estimated ship
    date."

They gave me a $50 coupon and the option to cancel my order if I wanted to. I just want my laptop!

Wait. Doesn't paypal act like VISA card somehow? Or do you have other credit card account ( yours or your parents ) such that they can have it to deposit the money back into them?
No other options they can provide?

Perhaps, try to call again and see how other CSR response. It would be Indian CSR if you call now.

I notice that when running on battery, my temperatures are considerably cooler.

As I posted earlier in this thread, I use a 3D intensive screen saver to monitor my temps. I was hitting high 80's to low 90's on the GPU. I used the same screen saver on battery, and the temps didn't go above 70. During normal use, all the temps seemed incredibly cool (low 40's for CPU, low 50's for GPU). Does the GPU step itself down when on battery (even when I use 'High Performance' on the power settings, with 100% of the CPU being utilized)?

I don't play games all that often, but I was still worried about heat. With low temps on battery, I feel much better.

BTW, I got the screen savers from www.reallyslick.com - the 'Lattice' was the one I found to stress the GPU the most.

The reason u get lower temp on battery is because while u r on battery, the powermizer software automatically lowers ur GPU performance, so now ur GPU will perform slower thn usuall.

Right now I'm getting hassled and being told that since I used a coupon that they won't give me anything for the 2 GB to 3GB. I told her I had a coupon that would save me 20 dollars and have the same config and I was ready to return this just to save myself 20 even though it would cost them so much more. She then decided to transfer me and give me $50 credit. Still on hold though, maybe try for the 100 but I'll settle at 50.

Managed to get my 50. HP has some great customer service. I will be definitely keeping this laptop.

    Two questions:
First, has anybody heard wind of a new coupon?? I missed the 30% and don't want to buy until there is a new one...
Also, a few people have posted some pretty high-end configs and are saying they cost less than or near $1000!! Why can't I get that price??
    My current config plan is:
Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)
    15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
FREE Upgrade to 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
2-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Pick Up and Return edit
For $1,374 (~$1,200 without the warranty)

What am I missing? how is anybody getting 4gb ram, blu-ray, etc for less than 1k??
    Thanks

People were getting such nice systems because of the 30% coupon and the $400 off coupon.

I have the same system you got configured. It cost $1250~ with a 1 year warranty (accidental drops and spills) and tax.

Kicks lots of *** too. :)

If you are a student buy the laptop through the HP APP program, also had a 5% coupon which saved me like $55. APP saved me like $100-150. I also called HP a few days ago and got $196 credited because of the 30% coupon, so total for my system is like $1000-ish.

I guess I'll just keep reading this thread until I see "Wow just found out there is a new 50% off coupon available!!" (I wish lol).
Don't think I can do the student discount thing cause I'm buying from Canada (such a hassle).
    Thanks for the reply!

PS. SOOO annoying that Cisco VPN doesn't work on Vista 64...

Just wanted to post a quick update on my DV5T experience. It has finally become my primary notebook, as I wanted to get everything just right and make an Acronis image before I took the old laptop out of commision. After using it as my only computer for a week now, I must say that I love this thing.

It is fast and I haven't touched my 'more powerful' desktop since I switched from my other notebook. I very much recommend purchasing one if you are in the market for one. With the right coupon codes, the value can't be beat.

Also, I have had two extremely pleasurable experiences dealing with customer service.

Just figured I would give my opinion... Hope you all have a great weekend.

    Hello everyone
Me and my roomate both have the DV-5t with 32-bit Vista...Since the 32-bit detects only 3gb of ram, we ordered only 4gb from newegg(2x2gb)..I was wondering whether we can use one of the 2gb modules from newegg and one 1gb module that came with the laptop? Will these two work together or will there be a problem with this setup?
    Thank you.

lol i did the same thing and i was one hold for like 5min...

the reason why is they compare the price you paid, to the price of the exact configuration now. in order to calculate that configuration, they go to their own website and basically customize a laptop and go through the entire process including coupons. so it takes awhile

Received the dv5T on Thursday and fired it up today. So far it's been a mixed bag.......................... new to Vista, and the changes from XP are a real pain in the rear.

This build has the 1280x800 standard display and it looks quite nice (with 96 DPI fonts) for my 55 YO eyes. :p. Youngsters will likely prefer the higher rez display.

The palm rests are a bit warm on this computer. Not terribly uncomfy but a bit worriesome nonetheless. Will see what happens when I push the peddle down. The only other minor complain is the amount of $#%$%^&% bloatware on this computer. I would pay extra to have a clean delivery. Hello HP............ anybody home? Listen up you HP jacktards and offer a "clean delivery"!!! :realmad: Looks like the computer is using 1.2 GB RAM out of the box. That's pretty sad.

I'll clone the drive with Acronis and then get into the SW cleanup. I'm not real interested in doing a full raw install.

    Vista ultimate 64, P8600 @2.4 GHz. ,9200M, 4 GB of RAM. Windows Experience 3.5 ...... ***?

Is there a master list of cannable bloatware for this computer?

Oh, the 'recovery disks' (optioned for ~ $19) don't appear to be real system disks.

I contacted HP today about the 12 cell battery product # 484172-001
....They had a guy call me from HP and he said they will ship it out for $284!!!!!!

I mean ....honestly...does that sound right for a price of a battery for a new laptop? This is my first laptop I ever bouht...

    thanks for any help :)

    Thank you.

Is there a way to reduce GPU and power performance while plugged in, or does powermizer only lower when on battery.

I got the 9600 GT, but I don't play games all that often (but every once in a while I like to shoot things). I'd much rather be able to 'turn it on' only when I need it. Man, I wish this thing had onboard gfx as well...
