Hey guys, I got a new dv5t. I switched to a lower processor and got a higher resolution. With the WXGA, on these forums, i can approximately see 16 topics, while i can see 22 on the WSXGA+.

Blu-Ray Rom Users...
This question goes out to the users who have a Blu-Ray drive. I recently bought an HDMI cable to connect my dv5t up to a Sony bravia 1080p ready tv. Everything looks awesome until I try to display a brand new Blu-ray movie on the tv while playing it in HP quickplay (i don't know what other program to use to play blu-ray). It says that I'm not authorized to view the movie in this display. I have not had the time yet to try and mess around with any settings. I was particularly bothered though!
Any suggestions - different media players to play the blu-ray? how to turn the hindering display settings off so i can view on my tv?
Thanks! -
My dv5t original estimated ship date was 9/5
It was delayed to be shipped at 9/8
I was pissed but it arrived Alaska at 9/9
CA Oakland at 9/10 midnight
then my home in LA at 9/10 10am.
So, the Fedex free shipping is effectively a 2 days business shipping to me.
No complains even with delayed shipped date. -
make sure that only one display is working. you can only use either the tv screen or the laptop screen when playing hdcp stuff not both
-
Does anyone know if I can change the speed at which my recovery discs are recorded? I tried burning them today but it gives me an error message when it starts to verify them. I would like to try with a different brand of dvd as well as a different burning speed, what do you guys think?
-
so fry's has 4gb at 800mhz from kingston for $35 ar...
if the dv5t is on a pm45 motherboard...then why isn't the dv5t compatible with ddr3? -
Why did it have to go to Alaska?
-
Has anyone's been built before the estimated date?
The wait is killing me... -
expect yours the day of...mine was accurate....sorry...
-
Because SHANGHAI is closer to Alaska than even to the west US coast.. Also it's probably a big FedEx airplanes spot, whit different directions from and to..
It's with sence for sure
Yes, we purchased several dv5t and one of my friend's purchase shipped 3 days before the estimate
Also, the FedEx IP direct distribution is quite fast, all of the times it came for 24 real hours after shipping(in fact Shanghai is +9 time zone, so by local time and dates is a bit more, but whatever
)

Well, here's my $.02.
I ordered my dv5t on 8/25, it shipped on 8/29 and recieved it on 9/2 only because of a 3 day weekend! It missed the cutoff for daily shipment on 8/25 and was in Tenessee on 8/31. Considering it was built in China, I found this AMAZING. Not only did I get it quickly, I got it exactly as I specified.
My rig:
Vista 64bit
P8600 2.4ghz
WXGA+ 1280 X 800 Brightview Infinity
3GB
9600GT 512MB
250GB 5400RPM
Webcam
Wireless AGN 5100 w/Bluetooth
Lightscribe DVD
Hi-cap 6 cell battery
$1011 after 30%
Here are its praises:
Great turn-around time for a custom build. Nifty if not great aesthetics. SOLID keyboard. THE best touch pad I've ever used. Touch controls are easy to use. Decent amount of USB ports, firewire, HDMI and an eSATA port! The windows remote was an added bonus! The dedicated video card can ACTUALLY play some games at reasonable settings.
Now the nit-picking.
There are NO CD/DVD's with this. It's not a big deal to me personally as I have others. (Bear in mind that this is my 3rd laptop and I've been building my own desktops since 1995.) The machine is as plug and play as you get but it is (as many have stated before me) loaded with bloatware. The display is good but not great. I opted for the 1280X800 but I'll address that in a bit.
The brightview infinity is nifty but unecessary, not to mention GLOSSY but doesn't seem to affect it much. Some people might find it distracting.
Things I wish I would have known:
I wish HP would make it more well known ALL the options available. Not just the configurable items. I may have chosen different options had it shown (like another manufacturer that rhymes with HELL) that it is available but may delay my computer.
I also wish that I would have known if all dv5t's came with the tv tuner. Some reviews talked about an integrated tuner but when I went to order, it wasn't even an option. See note above.
I wish I would have known that HP would offer a free upgrade to 3gb of ram FROM 1gb. I could have called but alas, I'm too busy (read - lazy) to deal with it.
Bottom line:
This is an attractive and reasonable laptop that CAN replace a mid-grade desktop. It provides a good balance of power, features, and styling. The price is reasonable after a good coupon.
What I would do differently:
A bigger or faster HD would have been nice. I would have definitely ordered the HDTV had it been an option for me. I would skip the brightview infinity (although I do like the way it looks.) I would have gone for the 4gb had the 3gb upgrade been free.
About the display:
I have a 1680X1050 15.4" laptop at work. I use it at 1280X800 because my eyes struggled seeing it on such a small screen. I use 1680X1050 at home on my 20" and it is JUST fantastic! I have always argued for more screen real estate and I've got pretty good vision but this resolution really strained my eyes. It was this strain that helped me decide on the 1280 screen.
I don't know if the 1680 screen is better or not, as I've not seen one, but the 1280 screen seems a little washed out to me. I used the external 20" samsung as a comparison and the contrast was not even close. I even used a screen calibration program to assist in the setup. The colors appear a little flat but can be tweaked to be acceptable. Backlight bleed also seems to be a bit of an issue too. To address the glossiness of the infinity display, it is mostly fine even in fairly bright conditions. It does work well as a mirror when it is off though. It may bother some but I don't mind.
To wrap up:
I love the new dv5t. It was built to my specification and shipped quickly. There are few things I'd do differently and I'm very happy with my new rig even thought it doesn't have the tv feature. -
Greets
I have the regular 1280 display and it looks quite nice to my older eyes. Went with the 1280 because of the the native 96 dpi fonts are too small on the 1600 res monitor.
Congrats on the new laptop and thanks for the mini-review. I agree, this is a good 'deal' when factoring in the 30%.
That said, the bloatware and lack of OS disks may be just enough to pursued me to not purchase another computer from HP.
. I'll need another computer shortly and will likely look at what Apple has to offer. I hope other people let HP know that their product marketing (lack of OS and bloatware) sucks and taints what is otherwise a good machine.

I've seen a couple of guys getting P8400 with their config even as they'd ordered for P7350
Is this the case with all those had ordered P7350? -
mine was shipped a few days before the ship date, and arrived promptly within the 5-7 business days they estimated. it was truly amazing.
this is a dumb question. but i know that the dv5 has the HP motion sensor for the hard drive, so it stops spinning. i'm guessing you could transfer your computer this way, but that would require your computer be on. (stupid for battery life). if you go to start and hit the power button logo... (hibernation basiclly) is it safe to transport your laptop that way? or does that kill batt. life just as bad? i ask because i'm college student. some classes i use my laptop, others i dont... so i jw. thanks.
-when will they come out with larger batteries for the dv5's?!?! -
I have a like 1-2 dead pixels on the screen, looks like a mini scratch. I wonder anyone knows about the policy of returning one. Or simply, i can return without any reason?
-
Can anyone help me on this?
-
Has somebody covered the problem with the volume clicking yet?
-
You have 21 days to return the notebook no questions asked.
-
Thanks a lot

HI guys.
Got my dv5t last week and have been to busy to post.
Gave my 2 year old DV5283ea to my wife and have a new toy to play.
Did a fresh install and everithing is working fine.
To Texanaviator: My was doing the same click and after the fresh Os install and with the latest drivers from hp sit it's gone.
Nuno Garcês -
I just got my dv5t today. Everything works great but the quick launch button - the orange mute light refuses to turn white when I tried to change it. It remains orange but the function works as normal - the volume icon on the screen changes.
I've updated the driver but nothing changed after that.
Does anyone here have similiar problem and know how to solve it? Thanks! -
Trusted Reviews has just published a review on the dv5t:
http://www.trustedreviews.com/noteb...avilion-dv5-1011ea-15-4in-Blu-ray-Notebook/p1
I'm waiting for mine to arrive hopefully within the next hour or so if not tomorrow.
I can't really feel too excited about it until I've checked everything's ok. I was offered to pay $60/£30 to get it checked for dead pixels and such but I declined since it's a little costly plus they only swap it if you have more than 5 dead pixels! And also some problems don't reveal themsevles straight away.
-
LOL didn't know there is dead pixel testing policy. I got my dv5t today and there are 2 dead pixels or two visible dust underneath the screen. Pretty bad luck and have to phone HP tomorrow.
-
The checking service was offered when I purchased off this site: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk
I don't know where HP stands with this issue but I should hope that replacements can be given if it's less than 5 dead pixels!
Well there's 786423 pixels in total lol now I'm worried about mine...
I hope you can get a better one, good luck! -
I have read on this forum that some have completed a fresh install without problems. For those of us who are not experts, which step-by-step guide works best for the DV5t? Thanks.
-
My battery lasts for a REALLY short time, like 2 hours without any gaming, mostly word processing and maximum 5-10 mins of youtube
Is there something wrong or that's supposed to be normal? It was even on power saver mode! -
This guide is linked on the first post of this thread so I guess it's fine for the dv5t.
-
Does anyone have solutions to the following two issues:
Blu Ray: I cannot seem to play the Blu Ray movies on an attached Hannspree 28 inch monitor through the HDMI'. I have tried to adjust the settings and even put the external monitor as the only display but still no success.
Bluetooth: I have bluetooth headphones and they show they are connected, but I cannot get any sound. Anyone know of a fix?
Overall I really like the DV5t. The only minor issues I have noticed include (1) the left speaker grill is off by a very small amount (almost unnoticeable) and (2) figuring out some software conflicts. The heat is not bad considering I have the highest video card and the 160 7200 HD. I have called HP support and unless your issues are straightforward (in which case even non-pros like myself can usually figure it out) it is a total waste of time. I have received much help on this site over the years and found this is the best place to find solutions. -
One thing I've noticed the past few days is if you have the 5100 AGN w/Bluetooth, when you press the button to disable WiFi it will disable BOTH BlueTooth and WiFi...quite annoying. Is there any way to change this button to only disable the WiFi. The HP Control pannel app has the ability to turn each on/off individually so I suspect this should be possible...
Any word yet on a larger battery for the Dv5t, I do have the 6-cell extended (55W/hr) but would definitely be interested in something larger. I Did notice that this unit has TWO Mini PCIe connectors too. The one is under the HDD and sports the WiFi card. The other is under the large pannel below the Ram pannel (Most Likely for the TV Tuner when it was an available option). One thing is tempting is a SSD drive to fill that PCIe slot (high speed 64GB SSD would be perfect). -
Mine arrived about an hour ago in great condition and no immediate problems
I much prefer the BrightView screen technology to Sony's BlackLight which had, in my opinion, too much stark contrast and almost looked 'yellowish' compared to other screens. This BrightView one has a nice blueish tint to it as did a previous Sony Vaio of mine.
My AC adapter is a little loose at the connection point but it does stay connected firmly and if I keep it still on a desk it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
The keyboard keys are a little more spaced than I'm used to but I can quickly adapt to that, they're very nice and feather light.
My God though, the amount of bloatware and general popups that came up during the first desktop load was the most I've ever seen! It looked a little crowded with the big advert icons (AOL, ebay ect.), the Vista Sidebar, the welcome screen and the HP toolbar.
Maybe it was just the first initialisations but the loadup screen does take a little while. I'll definitely go though this Vista Tweaks Guide to help speed things up.
Overall though so far, I'm really happy with it. -
Just got my refund for the original DV5T I returned(no problems with it, just wanted the WXGA+ screen). So I dropped it off at FedEx on Saturday morning and it probably got there Tuesday morning. HP WebSite reported that refund/credit complete on Tuesday, and today got the refund on my CC.
Nice speedy transaction HP! -
I just got through reading flipfire's undervolting guide. It seems pretty straight forward, but I was just curious if anyone has done it successfully with the T9600 processor yet.
-
I had a question about the quickplay buttons...
When you hit rewind or fast forward, it skips to the previous or next chapter when watching a dvd.
The user guide that on the computer computer says this:
"Rewinds media when the button is pressed simultaneously with the fn key "
I press the quickplay button in combination with the fn key, and it still skips a chapter...you can't do the actual rewind or fast forward small bit by bit...It's the same with the F11 and F12 keys.
Is this how it is with everything or did I get a bugged comp? And any idea how to go about making the quickplay buttons rewind/fast foward slowly instead of skipping chapters? Thanks! -
Rep from me, too. I was looking for how to make the recovery disks, so thanks for the post!
-
great because the original csr rep that i got didnt send me my shipping label and i had to call another csr when i got the delay notification, my replacement orders been delayed till the 17th and apparently it was built yesterday!
-
Does the same thing for me on iTunes, i don't think you can fast forward/rewind. Seems to only skip. remote control can fast forward or rewind though, in addition to skipping chapters, etc.
-
Just got my DV5t last night. It wasn't supposed to be delivered until this morning, but they attempted delivery when I wasn't home. So I went and picked it up but have just now had a chance to open it up, take a look, and am currently creating recovery disks.
I'm not planning to do a complete re-install but will use some of the suggestions here... like JPZ's guide, the "decrapifier" software, etc. ;-) (LOL, what a funny name)
Do many of you create another partition on your hard drive? I have a 250 GB, so I probably should, but I can't remember how to do it without using something like Partition Magic, which is old and probably won't work with Vista.
ps. Are dead pixels really noticeable because I don't see anything weird, which I take as a good sign? -
I was wondering that because I wasn't expecting to see the D drive as just a recovery partition! (the manual just says that there was a way HP recovers without disks but it didn't explain how)
Oh you'd definetly notice, they show up as white dots on a black screen (like when Vista is just starting up and the backlights haven't temporarily faded) and you can just generally see them shining brighter than the rest of the pixels on a white screen.
---
Does anyone else's speakers make a small beeping noise when you've finished loading something? When I take it off mute it does it as well.
Maybe I need to update the driver... -
hey i dnt wna do the clean install (cause i dnt kno hw...) but what shud i delete that i wont need and takes space?
-
When running 3dMark06, my fps is very low (usually 11-13) during the graphics tests and extremely low (0-1) accompanied by lag during the cpu tests. Does this mean there is something wrong with my graphics card/cpu or is this normal?
Also my max temperatures after running 3dMark06 five times in a row were:
TZ01 (what is this?): 84 C
CPU core #1: 80 C
#2: 77 C
GPU: 91 C
HD: 49 C
Thanks! -
I am also considering the dv5t. In fact, I might order it today but I wanted to clear up something with your help here.
Before I ask my questions here are the specs I selected for my dv5t. Keep note that this laptop won't be used for gaming, mainly for word processing, surfing the web, listening to music, and watching movies occasionally.
Operating system: Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)
Display: 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
Memory: 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
Graphics card: 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
Hard drive: 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
Personalization: Webcam Only
Keyboard: HP Color Matching Keyboard
Networking: 802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth
Primary CD/DVD drive: LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
Primary battery: High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
HP extended service plans: 2-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Pick Up and Return
Questions:
- Should I get higher resolution considering my needs? Or is 1280x800 fine for me?
- What is the purpose of the Infinity glass on the display? Is it there for looks and additional protection? I read somewhere in a review that dust got stuck between the screen and the Infinity glass in the guy's dv5t and the only way to get it out was to send it back to HP, so he just dealt with having on his screen.
- What is LightScribe when it is referring to the CD/DVD drive?
- Does a larger hard drive increase the weight of the laptop?
Thanks in advance!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
I am using the higher resolution one and it's good. The word is small but readable. Have more space for the windows and firefox has larger font setting so it is cool.
Mine is not the Infinity glass and still have 2 dust inside the screen ( Will replace later ) so it really depends on luck I guess. There is a detail review of infinity one and non infinity one of dv5t. You can search about it.
Lightscribe is to burn your CD/DVD with stylish labels. Of course, it requires specific CD/DVD for it as well.
You can simply use it as normal CD/DVD RWLast edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
1. You should be fine with either. It is a personal choice. Higher rez gives clarity and more real estate, but results in smaller icons and fonts. To decide, you need to look at some in person, if possible.
2. I do not have the Infinity screen. I could not tell a difference between the screens in term of clarity or color vibrance. It does look cool, though.
3. As noted by chefung, LightScribe allows you to label the disk, if you use the right disks. Again, it is only worth it if you would use it. I wouldn't.
4. I believe that the weight difference between available drives is inconsequential.
Good Luck! -
hi guys,i m from UK and like to buy dv5 via play.com(UK),but i m wondering whether the warranty is a local pick up and return service because they didn't mention any information about the warranty, does anyone here bought from play.com?
-
Lightscribe is a total waste. I have it on my desktop. It takes like 20 minutes to burn the label, and when you're done, you realize how cool it isn't.
Wow, over 3000 posts. I should come back in here more oftenLast edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
What language is that?
-
I would suggest going with the integrated graphics card for your use. It is sufficient for your needs and it will keep your laptop cooler and give it better battery life.
A higher resolution is pure choice, although a higher resolution will make everything smaller, but the viewing space is great.
As for the Infinity screen, its up to you, i personally don't think you need it and it's not worth the extra money.
LightScribe is just additional technology in your CD/DVD drive that allows lasers in your laptop to create a label for your CD. Reality though, it's not useful. It takes way too long when you could just save money and time and grab a sharpie and slap a title on it.
Larger hard drive won't increase the weight in the laptop, not noticeable weight anyway.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
