I have the same problem on a new dv7 fresh out of the box. I am a vendor and the client hasn't even picked it up so hasn't had a chance to muck it up.

Sorry, but no, i have to agree with johnny. Things like u instead of you and u are instead of you are is fine, but honestly, it's a peeve, and often view the person uneducated, when they type good - gud and look - luk, etc. Even people who don't know english that well make an effort to spell right, although their grammar might falter.

If I stick with the integrated graphics card will I be good when I watch movies? Or online videos?
And could I later upgrade to a dedicated graphics card in the laptop if I wanted to?

Yeah it will work fine when watching videos, and no, you can't later upgrade (i wouldn't recommend it if you could)

Try playing with all the software you see in Control panel > uninstall program for a while. Filter it by size. Anything you don't like/have better software of (like DVD playing software) you can just delete.

For example the HP games trial program is around 300mb, so if you don't like playing things like Bejewelled and such that's going to give you that much space back.

I got mine at at £750 (postage inc.) from laptopsdirect.co.uk but I just checked and they've sold out already. They said they had 5-10 in stock this week

You could get one from play.com. I was going to get mine from there originally.

I don't want another, I just wanted to check if they were still in stock otherwise it wouldn't have been a good suggestion for you.

I'm not sure about the return policy on play.com, they don't have much info on the site. Have you tried emailing/phoning them?

Edit: this is all the info they have about the return policy on the site:

I think so, if it's the one that's for 7 days.

Anyone else get this weird "End Program - CL RC Engine 3 Dummy Window" message pop up when you shut down while the Quicklaunch is enabled in startup?

I've just disabled Quicklaunch on startup but I'm wondering why it's happenning, like if there's a program confliction or service I shouldn't have disabled :/

Just got my dv5t. First impressions: Very dusty(***). I will need to spend quality time with the cleaning cloth. I also instantly regret not getting the 7200 rpm upgrade. Oh well. I will try it, and if I don't like it, will return it.

My Nvidia 9600M GT driver is currently Version: 7.15.0011.7586. The Nvidia site is suggesting I get 175.19.

Although not reliable, the Windows Experience Index is giving a Graphics score of 4.9

Is this the latest driver and if not where can I get it?

Try reinstalling QuickPlay. If that doesn't fix it, try reinstalling Quicklaunch.

I'd hold your judgment off a bit until you use the machine for about a week . . . Vista is slow at first since it's accessing the hard drive a lot. A 7200RPM drive won't make something load twice as fast, so if you're looking for a night and day difference by going 7200, it won't happen. The difference will be more like "Oh hey, that did load faster than with the 5400."
    Use the driver update guide:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=258626
I recommend 177.92; I have confirmed they work fine on Vista32 and Vista64 on the 9-series Nvidia mobile cards.

Ya, the drive speed really hasn't been that much of a problem recently. Besides, I wouldn't return it now because there is no free upgrade to 3gb(which I got) and also they aren't offering the 7200 rpm drive anymore.

I had to do some messing around to get the media remote to work with vlc player, but I have got it functioning pretty well.

I downloaded the latest drivers, 177.98. Should I roll back to 177.92?

My dv5t has two dust behind the screen and rather than that my dv5t is perfect. No misaligned, quicktouch works great, etc.

I wonder if I should replace it. For normal websurfing, video, photo editing, I barely notice that dust as it looks dark. However, what the screen is somehow all white like pdf reading, word/excel processing. The dust will be noticed and somehow annoying to picky me.

As I don't have another computer, can i send it back to HP until they send me a new one or so
    Any suggestion? Thanks

I think I'll stick with my current driver for a while just incase.

Hmm, occasioanlly my speakers make this popping noise, nothing to do with the Vista sounds, it's a physical speaker pop. Despite updating my audio driver it's still happening when something finishes loading. Anyone have this issue? Maybe some dust got in there, I'm not sure what I could do about that...

You have to go into preferences-interface-hotkeys. Go to the things you want to control with your remote, and change to that key. for example, go to play/pause, and change the button to media play/pause. Make sure to uncheck the alts/ctrls/etcs so it jsut works with the media remote. Basically, the way I have configured it, I have play/pause, stop, skip forward/back, and volume control w/ the remote. I can't get ff/rew though, but vlc doesn't seem to have a ff/rew feature so I guess it doesn't matter.

Try going to this page at Intel's site below, select your version of Vista, and download the processor identification utility. I assume Intel's utility is definitive at letting one know what processor they have.

NICE!! cpuz says it is P8600.
I also downloaded the new version of cpuid monitor and now it says P8600.
I guess I had the old version before.

    Man ... what a relieve.
I just didn't want to go through the exchanging process.

    ---------

    BlueRadical,
    Thanks for your advise.

    ---------

Chango99, on the cpuid monitor, move the tab to the right, then you will see more description.

Could anyone who has good knowledge with partitioning give me some advice?

Mine came with 250GB of space and it's set up like this:

I want to set Photoshop's scratch disk to another drive so it runs smoother, and on my last machine, I set it to drive D:, which occupied half of my total HD space.

But since it was pre-partitioned to use some space for a Recovery drive, I'm not sure what I should do... Do I make a 3rd partition for additional storage and my PS scratch disk or use the Recovery partition? (I don't really know still what the Recovery partition actually is for anyway, is it automatically keeping backups of my system or something? is it just space for where all the system restore points are kept?)

Hm, the best way I think would be to purchase a separate hard drive if you want it to be simple and effective.

Partitioning would be effective but not simple.

Ok, hmm to be honest, since I'm not really experienced with partitioning I think I should just leave it as it is just incase something goes wrong. Plus I've got a good stable system right now so I don't want to mess that up.

I'm sure Photoshop would be fine on just one drive, my files aren't the kind that generate over 50 layers and such and if I just remember to restart to clear the history the scratch disk won't get too full...

If I find that 250 is too low for what I need, I'll look into getting an external HD. Thanks. :)

I burned my recovery discs and did a fresh install of vista. During the install, I deleted all patitions and made a system (Vista) and Data (Files) partition. I use the data drive for Adobe's scratch drive. You don't want to use your system drive for that. It will fragment the hell out of it.

A separate partition will NOT make any dif as a "scratch" disk. If you really want a scratch disk you'll need to add an esata drive.

BTW, I really don't think you'll see a rat's-*** dif with a scratch disk.................. for photoshop. That app doesn't stress the machine that much.

I have a hard drive question...need it answered soon if anyone knows since there's not much time left to return my comp if there's a problem.

I downloaded and ran the read benchmark function of HdTune.

    My results were:

    Minimum transfer rate: 31.2 MB/sec
    Average transfer rate: 49.8 MB/sec
    Maximum transfer rate: 65.5 MB/sec
    Access time: 16.8 ms
    Burst rate: 56.2 MB/sec
    CPU usage: 7.7%

I have a western digital 320gb 5400 rpm hard drive.

The reason for this post is because on the hdtune website in the FAQ section it says this:

"An important parameter of the test is the Burst Rate. This value should always be higher than the maximum transfer rate.
A lower value is usually an indication of a configuration problem."

My burst rate is lower than my maximum transfer rate.

Should I return my HP dv5t or do anything else? Is there even a problem or is this standard with this type of hd?

    Thanks a bunch!
