I did so. My burst rate remained the game. The minumum transfer rate decreased. The access time and CPU usage increased.

Stock 250 Meg Hitachi HTS543225 drive with 'performance mode: OFF:
    Maximum 66.6 MB/sec <=== :eek:
    Average 49.5 MB/sec
    Access time 18.5 mS
    Burst Rate 93.8 MB/sec
    CPU usage 3.4 %

Stock 250 Meg Hitachi drive with 'performance mode: ON:
    Maximum 65.3 MB/sec
    Average 48.9 MB/sec
    Access time 19.1 mX
    Burst Rate 93.7 MB/sec
    CPU usage 3.2 %

So, this 'tweak' doesn't seem to be of any value. The min went way down on mine also when in performance mode. ???

That said, it does look like the burst rate should be better on your 320 GB drive. My recommendation would be to keep the lappy and purchase a 7200 RPM drive that has 16 MB of cache. Keep your old drive as a backup. Use Acronis to clone the old drive to the new drive.

is there a solution to the high temps when playing games with the dv5t? (mine smelled like it was burning once.) i know you can raise your notebook up, but have they updated the bios or anything like that to control the temp on those 9600m gt's? thanks

    1. Yes, it is "beta" to go battery-less while plugged in, it saves charge cycles and there will be less heat.

    2. I got a zalman nc2000, yes it's discouraging to have to push the laptop more forward to line up with the vents, but cooling will be better if you line up the vents. You can go without lining it but the reduce in temps won't be that good.

Hey guys, i have some physical defects. I have had 2 dv5ts, one i sent back, now i'm on my new one and i notice some thing i never noticed on my old laptop (grill still unaligned on both). On this one, some of my keys are louder sometimes when pressed down at different angles, gets annoying.

Now, this defect, I want to ask you guys to check yours too and post if you have it too. Under the touchpad, when pressing at an angle where you are pressing against it and up towards it, i get a click noise. By under, i mean where the Power, electricity, and harddrive disks lights are. Try pushing there in a couple of angles.

I raised the back of mine up on two erasers, and then have a fan pointed at the back of it blowing cool air at the laptop. My max temp has been 79c on the gpu while playing crysis on med/high.

I just got my Dv5T and... Checking with CPU-Z my RAM says 400mhz, is that right? Shouldn't it be 800mhz? Please forgive my noob question.

After having the Dv5 for longer time it actually is correct that the fan isn't always on when the pc is charging, great :)

Another thing. Previously I had a computer with a resolution of 1400 x 1050. So I was a bit worried having this Dv5 with 1280 x 800. But it turns out that this resolution fits me better as the websites etc. now fills out the screen instead of having a lot of white space as had before. Of course when I'm writing in Word or using Excel the 1400 x 1050 was a bit better, but still very usable in 1280 x 800. So to every day use the 1280 x 800 is a winner for me :)

Your memory is DDR2. DDR stands for Dual Data Rate. DDR doubles the data rate by reading and writing on both the rising and falling edge of the clock, so effective bandwidth is doubled, which means that your effective speed (800MHz) is twice your actual speed (400MHz). Hope that helps ;)

Can someone take a look at my temperatures and tell me if they are normal, they seem to be average but the fan on my laptop is running at full blast and it's very loud, it started doing this after a clean install, before it, the fan was almost completely silent. I'm only running IE.

Well ur temp look perfectly ok, regarding the fan, there is an option in the bios which allows u to choose whether u want the fan on all the time or not, try switching tht feature off or sumthing.

I've only read a few posts on here about batteries but my standard 6 cell barely lasts 1.5 hours in HP Recommended mode AND in Power Saver mode. I tested them both today. I thought it was supposed to last 2.5 on the standard?

Just ask for exchange of my dv5t with 2 dust trapped between the screen and LCD.
Other parts work great. Perhaps I am too picky.

I used Acronis to clone the original Hitachi drive to a Seagate ST9250827AS 250 GB drive and here are the results:

    Maximum 62.8 MB/sec
    Average 49.6MB/sec
    Access time 16.0 ms
    Burst Rate 110.0 MB/sec
    CPU usage 3.1 %

Pretty good improvement in access time and burst rate with the Seagate drive. :). Probably due to the 16 MB of Cache. I bought this drive from Provantage:
    http://www.provantage.com/seagate-st9250827as~7SEGS1FJ.htm

I would urge you folks to clone your drives. Makes for a very quick recovery in the event of a system crash.

I can't create the click you are referring too. In all fairness I think you're expecting too much from HP. HP makes very good computers BUT they are priced very-very competitively and as such will have niggling issues. That's the nature of fast-food consumer electronics. My suggestion is to focus on the big issues and make sure the computer meets those expectations.

FWIW, I don't think you'll find ANY difference with DELL, ACER, etc. The only exception to this general QC issue would be Apple but they're still a bit more expensive when comparing overall features/performance.

    good luck

How bad is your misaligned problem?
Mine has just a little bit and it doesn't matter too much to me.

I wonder if they will compensate you. They simply ask you to exchange or return i guess. I asked for exchange today and they didn't ask me why I wanted to exchange and said something to compensate. It should not be the US CSR policy.

Ok, does anyone have the 320gb western digital hard drive in their dv5t? If so, what temperature are you seeing for the drive after using the laptop for a couple hours? I am using HWonitor to check and I am up to 137 degress F(58 C). WD says the max operating temperature is 140F. I am just doing email, surfing and chat. Any input from others would be great. Also wouldnt mind seeing temperatures for other make model and size drives. Take care all.

PS: Here is the link if you dont have HWMonitor. http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

FYI: The stock 250 GB Hitachi went to 52C during a cloning operation. This cloning operation took about 45 minutes of constant drive reading. Afterward the drive settled down to 42C.

58C sounds high for just surfing the net. Are the intake/vents blocked? Try raising the back of the computer a little bit.

Not that bad, I wasn't exactly concerned about that, although I heard people were compensated with money for the grills, I never called about that. The thing i'm more concerned about right now is something that is different between my old and my new one. The new one has a crappier keyboard and the click on the underside.

Hi guys, Hopefully you will help me with this. This is the system I ordered:
    - HP Pavilion dv5t Entertainment Notebook
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9600 (2.80GHz)
    - 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)
    - 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
    - 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - [For BrightView Infinity Display] Webcam Only
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
    - No Modem
    - LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0

My concerns are about my NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS Card. Is it going to be enough since I don't play games but I use lot applications open at once (firefox, word doc's, some DVD burning software). Sometimes I use Photoshop to edit my pictures.

Any feedback please. I would be appraciate it.

    Thanks......

The 9200M GS card will work just fine for the apps you described.

Why did you go with 32bit? The 64 bit version appears to be very stable and it offers a lot compared to the 32 bit version. Especially, since it's a zero cost option.

If you are looking for compensation dont call the tech support line. They wont do it and will call you for a week straight asking if you want to have a repair.

Yeah, they just kept asking if i wanted to have it repaired, but i don't want to go through the whole process again as i did with this current on and the previous dv5t i had. Get's so annoying waiting, mailing it back to them, countless setting up of the laptop over and over.

but then again, i don't know, i might want to just return it. Honestly, crappier keyboard + the clicking thing on the bottom... the tech support even told me that it might have been that my laptop was not tightened up enough or something?... i don't recall but it doesn't reassure me very well.

I can't pull the trigger yet...still recovering from my original dv5t purchase. Probably one of those things I'll have to wait for like Christmas or birthday and such

After my reload It says using 33% physical memory, so that's 600 MB on a 2 GB machine? I can't imagine anything I would do that would take more than that and plus I'm on Vista32 bit

actually, its easy. call them and tell them theres a new coupon. know the code and just let them know and they will credit you back the difference. I have done it twice already. once for when they changed the price on memory for a short spell and now when have issued this 500$ coupon which was a 75$ difference from the 30% off i used. all and all i have had 100$ credited back to me and they even sent me a coupon for 50$ for messing up my shipping which im trying to sell.

anybody can have it for 35$ if they want it.

it would work really well if your interested in one of there backpacks or maybe a timbuk2?

LET ME KNOW. I want to buy an ogio so bad but can afford it til i sell this coupon.

Called them just now and spoke with a woman I could barely understand (don't you love outsourcing?) and she informed me that the coupon code expired weeks ago (umm, no.)

Looking at this now, I'm not even sure I qualify. My system was $1,434 BEFORE the instant rebate...after that's applied, it's obviously under the $1,399 threshold.

    DOH?

Try calling again ... it seems US based representatives are more helpful for these kind of transactions

    Partial success...

I was never great at math, but apparently the difference between a $200 coupon and $500 coupon is $98.

Oh well, it's better than nothing.

your getting shafted. i got nearly 100$ back and my inital coupon was for 430.

I recomend calling them back and telling them that code.

mine was 1423 before my coupon code as well and i still qualified.

I'll probably get around to it. Honestly, though, getting transferred around and talking to Indians is really exhausting. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

Looks good to me. What are you doing with the system besides not gaming?

I want it to browse the internet, listen to music (a high quality line out for headphones is important to me), play flash games, play movies (I'd love to be able to play 720p MKV files on it), do some Photoshop, Illustrator and I will use MS Office. I would love everything to be fast though.
