Still waiting on mine to ship. It says that it should be the 19th.

If it does ship on Friday and not before then, when should I receive it with the standard shipping?

Yeah, I really don't trust their 5-7 day estimates.

Earlier than those 5-7 days. Happy? Don't expect it during the weekend though.

Did any of you actually get the credit back from them for the temporary free upgrade to 3GB RAM? I called and the lady said she would credit it back to me. So I waited, and I just checked today. I called and the person who helped me this time told me I was not credited for that, and well, she can't anymore since the 3GB upgrade isn't free anymore. :\

Well, how lame. The lady lied to me then and now I can't call back for it since the free 3gb is not there anymore.

What was your defect? Did you have to hassle them to get the credit or did they just give it to you?

The media buttons are not working (the sound goes down and gets muted on it's own... (you can see a bump underneath the buttons.) and the left hinge was seriously crooked. I was just asking for an exchange and he said he was going to give me $100 for my trouble. IMO they have great customer service (although I could barely understand what he was saying from time to time), could also be that I got a good CSR.. I will probably end up just keeping my new Dell because it's such a good deal, but I love the Dv5t.

Question for you all ... I noticed Chaz mentioning earlier that the P series Intel Dual Core CPU's consume a little less energy than the T series.

Other power saving questions related to the dv5t ... is there a noticeable difference between the 9200gs and the Intel card in terms of battery life?

I am looking at purchasing one of these through Costco, primarily for its excellent return policy.

One of the primary issues for me is battery life, but if the difference between the two cards is very small, then I would like the nVidia graphics "engine" I guess.

    Any tips?

Also ... can anyone out there with either the nVidia 9200gs or the Intel x4500 card and a 12 cell battery for this laptop tell me how much battery life they are able to squeeze out of it?

I think your looking at the wrong laptop for our needs... well what exactly do you need anyway? You didn't really state anything.

Yes P series use 25w TDP while T series uses 35w TDP.

For the video card, the integrated intel's uses alot less power and produces alot less heat.

There is no 12 cell for this laptop yet.

Sorry about that ... okay ... for more details.

A friend has offered to purchase a laptop for a co-worker, but will only do so from Costco.

This co-worker's main considerations are battery life and a firm keyboard. (I personally like single hinge screen laptops as well....) I have heard very good things about the HP keyboards and the few I have tested in various stores were also very good. As for battery life he is away from a plug fairly often (daily, in fact, for many hours at a time). Screen size is also a plus, and the 1680x1050 available size is a good one for that (he does page layout and is an editor).

As for the 12 cell for this laptop, the review from pcmag that chaz linked very early on in this thread mentioned a 12 cell was coming and another fellow somewhere in the 50's page wise mentioned being able to find a part number for a battery for this model on HP's website. But, if not available .... Ah well.

Yes there will be a 12 cell and there is already a part number, but no it's not available yet. The only batteries right now are both 6 cell, just that the "upgrade" is a high capacity 6cell. For battery life, I guess if you use a P series processor and an intelx4500 integrated video card, you can manage maybe about 3 1/2 hours with the high capacity 6cell.

Nope there isn't a sure date of availability yet. You can look at this thread, they seemed to be able to order it for a hefty price, but they didn't receive it or it failed to ship or something...

but it is pretty much unknown right now.

Placed an order for my first ever laptop from Costco!!! So excited! You guys have all been a BIG help! Here's what I got...

    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
    3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator X4500
    Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
    15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    HP Color Matching Keyboard
    No Modem
SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
[For BrightView Infinity Display] Webcam Only
    No TV Tuner w/remote control

Total including tax was $1,125...planning to upgrade to Microsoft Office for Small Business with Costco's upgrade at $149.

No gaming...typically run several programs at a time...office, photoshop, acrobat, etc. Heavy internet use with 5 or 6 windows open at a time. Will this system hold up well for that?

Also, placed this order on the 11th...just saw HP $500 coupon...could cancel Costco and re-order through HP but really like the idea of being able to walk into the store to return it if something's wrong [not to mention 90 day return policy]. For those who ordered directly from HP...any or many problems? What's your recommendation? I'd end up saving like $150.

Thanks for all ya'lls great advice so far! Can't wait to be one of the 'family'!

Well, if you have any issues, it would be rather better to go for costco since they are local and you don't have to wait for shipping. I like to save money, so I would order from HP. You can get better specs for a cheaper price with the 500$ coupon, so that's a big thing to consider.

    - 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
    - 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

but i chose the 32-bit vista OS instead, was this a stupid decisions and should i get it changed? I was thinking since i only had 3 gb of ram and there being almost no 64-bit apps out there currently it was pointless to go 64-bit

priz...there are plenty of programs that run 64 bit if you can find them...
the thing to consider with 64 bit is that the os itself is 64 bit and there are performance gains in that alone...
but honestly...it attributes to very little...so be happy with your 32 and go crazy when it comes...its a very good machine congratulations

Thanks Chango99 for the comments but i was skeptical about adding the second 2GB RAM module into my system becoz of the 1 year HP warranty. I donno whether my warranty will become null and void if I change any configuration of my system. Advice on the same would be appreciated. :)

Warranty will remain intact, however they won't service your laptop unless you put all the original parts back in it.

It seems like most things now don't really make any difference with 64 bit, but that you can still see some conflicts. Why not just keep the computer and upgrade to a 64 bit OS in the future when there's actually a reason to?

That's what I'm doing too. :) 32-bit is still the way to go to avoid confliction problems these days. I don't really believe we will see any big changeover to 64-bit for even a few years yet. Although it's already happening with some programs, we're still in the 32-bit era where there is most support.

Hi FakeHat (whoever) please see the difference in the performance between regular 32 bit OS and 64 bit OS and further we will be future who will be using this 64 bit OS.

Performance gains are relative for 64bit OS

Unless the Application is written to take advantage of the extended mapping of 64bit addressing, it will not be noticeably "faster".

But there are other performance gains such as the ability to address 4 GB of physical memory within the OS itself so you'll have one more GB to burn through before going to swap space.

I'm sticking with 32bit for now to avoid any conflict issues until 64bit becomes more mainstream, I will upgrade then

    - Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

I think its great. especially for what I paid for. $1162.05

Anyways, There is a new Coupon for $500. I reordered another one with the ALMOST the same specs except,

    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
    - 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP

Final price $1173 ... Is this worth it or should I cancel the order? a whopping 11 dollars for a difference of 140 mhz. and 70 GB HD space.

Please let me know ASAP, I just ordered about 30 min ago, now I feel like I shouldn't have.

Is there a significant difference in the P8400 and P8600?

Also this setup isnt going to have more of a heating problem than my original one, will it?

    Thanks in advance.

Well i think u shud stick with the new order u placed, as for $11 extra, its worth the upgrade to the CPU and HDD. Other thn the price, i dont think heat will be an issue as both CPUs run on 25w.

Yeah I know! the price is just right. I can't pass this up. But I am just so worried that I got lucky and received a perfect laptop and the next one is going to have issues. I am scared of the heating problem.

The 250GB and the 320GB are both the same right? One isnt cheaper quality or anything is it?

The difference between the CPU's is very minor.

The difference in performance and security between 32 bit OS and 64 bit OS aren't so minor and will become more evident as time goes on.

Well to be honest with you, heat is not much of a prb, I have bought the Zalman NC2000 which keeps the temp down by around 10-12c.

The main heat cause is the 9600M GT GPU, hard disk temp even in full stress doesnt go more thn 48-50C, where as the GPU peaks 90-95C without cooler and 80-85C with cooler.

Dont worry abt issues, if u have any u always have the HP 21 days return policy. Whereas in my case I dont get anything like the 21days return, coz I bought mine from Saudi Arabia. So consider urself lucky tht u got the $500 off which I cant get and u get the HP return policy.

And I think both the 250Gb and 320Gb shud be of the same make, in my case my hard disk in Western Digital (WD).

Hey guys, I'm new here. I just ordered my dv5t on monday, two days ago, and I COULDN'T BE MORE STOKED!

    Specs worth noting:
    -------------------
    2.4ghz P8400
    3gb ram ddr2
    512 9600m GT

I have a few questions though:
    1. Does this laptop support DDR3? It comes with DDR2 but if I'd like to increase it, can it support ddr3? :)

    2. Is hybridpower supported? I'd (and you too) would love to use the notebook casually with the 9600 turned off. I understand that you need the nvidia chipsets or something, but is there any workaround? Bios fiddling?

    3. How long did your system take to ship? This is gonna be a long wait!!

Thanks a lot, this place seems like a new place to hang out!

    Hey John,

thanks. How about the harddrive??.. Do you feel it's worth the upgrade? for 11 dollars more??

    250GB to 320GB??

are the harddrives both the same quality?? Do they perform the same?

Sorry for the noobish questions, I just want to make sure I get the best deal for this machine. $1200 is a lot of money, especially right now! :)

****...............so, If I ordered T9600 (2.80GHz) with 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT I believe I will have heating issues. That would be perfect one but If I see and heating issues I'm going to return it right away. And I will get 256 GPU since I am not gamer.

    Any comments?

11 bucks is worth going 250-320, unless you intend to purchase a 7200 RPM drive somewhere down the line
